  • Ernst Paudert, Etude #88 from "335 Selected Melodious Progressive Technical Studies for French Horn, Book 1" (aka. "The Blue Book")
    TMEA All-State 2023-2024 #1
This is a long one. There are a lot of notes to learn, but within each section of the etude there are similar patterns to execute. Spend time outside of the etude learning your scales and arpeggios so that you'll be set up for these more difficult jumps.
The dotted figures should be practiced in a variety of rhythms and especially should be practiced slurred as well. Try to keep your embouchure as stable as possible as you move through the jumps, although you can see in the video that even I have trouble keeping it perfectly still.
If your articulation is too forceful and punchy you may struggle with accuracy throughout. Take the staccatos with a grain of salt; the notes are short enough already.

Once again I am astounded by your FH skills. As a middle school FH player who's been playing for a year now, it is SO COOL to see someone who has obviously mastered this instrument. I love watching your content. FH is one of the best instruments and when played by the right people it IS the best instrument. Thanks for being an inspiration Scott.

I was in class and after finishing all my work i printed out the etudes and searched up specifically Scott leger, only to find out only two of them were up!
Then i come home to the third one.
I wasnt able to control this but im glad that i was able to give the other two the time then, so i can give this one the time now.
What im trying to say is
This man is the best and helps so much. Plays VERY well and is sort of an idol to someone half way through highschool. If i make it in region this year, it will be because of this man.
Thanks a lot scott, you are a great person and player to look up too! 💙

Would you mind doing an update video on your current recording set up?
Would love to hear about your mic placement in the smaller room as well as what you’re using for EQ, compression, reverb, or anything that you’re putting in the sound chain. Thank you so much!

I remember playing this for my 9th grade region audition a couple months ago. I had to go first and I was super nervous. Somehow I got the very last chair at region and barely made it. If you were in my room though, I would have definitely been cooked.
