At MSRP I think the IS500 is a decent deal. Especially when you consider the fun factor and emotional engagement (how do you put a price on those?) of the V8 this becomes one of those purchases where you focus on the intangibles as much as you do the facts and figures. I know which one (between this and an M340i) I'd rather take back and forth to work everyday and as much as I like modern BMW products in this case it would be the IS500. Actually scratch that. I'd rather save for an LC500. If we are going for a V8 Lexus then lets go all the way!
I will tell you this as an owner of a 2021 Lexus is350 f sport, they are very very fun to drive so I can only imagine the is500 and all of my friends that have driven my car or driven with me, say the car is fun and it just brings a smile to their face. This car and the c8 corvette are the only car I want to currently purchase. It definitely be worth more than m cars, and amgs in the future
I'd have to agree that the emotional connection is such a huge factor for making a decision on a car. I drove a Supra, an M240i, an S3 and an S4, and I still ended up falling in love with the Veloster N. Did not expect to, but just felt something driving that car I didn't feel with any other car. The only other thing that made me feel so giddy and excited was an RC-F.
Like they said this car is for the people doesnt care how modern the interior is or the if it has kept up with time, its for the people who buys a car to have fun it it to regain that old school goodness ,
I want one of these so bad. I have a modified 2018 Camaro SS (upgraded internals, long tube headers, and custom grind camshaft) and want something else for a daily eventually. This car just seems perfect. Reliable, fun, comfortable, and four doors.
I have a 17 Mustang Gt and I was side by side with one of these the other day.. I got the jump on him even with my Manual but for the most part we were side by side all the way to a 100 even with me having to row my own gears.. Thank God for my 373 gearing..
Same reason he mentioned - everyone would miss the point and compare it to the M3, C63, RS5, etc. which are all much faster. By not doing the F wide body fenders, race seats, suspension, etc. it costs a lot less and won't be cross shopped with the faster competition - emotion>>>>
Great review. I prefer old school Mk2 MR2 with another old school supercharged Camry engine myself. But what a glorious sound and visceral thrill this IS 500 F can deliver!
I'm a huge Lexus fan, I have owned an IS-F for almost 13 years now - but this car just seems like a parts bin special and was made for North America only. The original IS-F will out run and out handle the IS500. Hopefully we will see a new IS-F with the Tundra V6 Turbo.
@@jake2772 It's true they are slower and heavier than the old one lol. Even the GS460 from 2007 which I have is barely slower than this, the older models weigh less.
The transmission alone kills the car for me. And I'm a huge Lexus fan. If I'm getting an automatic in a performance car, it's gotta be quick and responsive. This is probably their way of separating it from the F models. For the price, big mistake for me. Rather have an ISF or GSF
I’ve seen a few comparisons from this and the legendary ISF. ISF beats in terms of feel and soul. ISF beats it in terms of nimbleness, handling and turn in. ISF beats it in braking performance. And power to power, nothing is really different other than the obvious updated engine and “updated” transmission. Nothing still can compare to the ISF. Everything build after it was build with and around it. It’s almost like the LFA. It’s so good that it cant be recreated.
The is500 literally uses the same trans from the isf and RCF/GSF (AA80E) made by Aisin. Also, I own a group with multiple owners that have come from rcf’s to the is500s and they all say it’s the exact same. From an owners experience.
@@Nate-Aims it's the same transmission, but tuned differently. Way differently. You can hear the delay in shifts, and the shift speeds are noticeably slower than the F models. You can tell me all you want about what others think, but I know what I see and hear. Thanks
@@Whotta Even If it was tuned differently, it would be very easy to tune the trans to shift quicker. BUT, other owners of this car completely disagree with what you say so it doesn’t really matter.
@@Nate-Aims Owner's bias is present here lol. Watch back to back videos on F models and is500. F models shift much quicker and are more responsive. And IMO it's not even close
Remember that time when people said the LC 500 would be the last great N/A V8 car from Lexus, and then three years later they made this thing? I think Lexus is catching on to a strategy of releasing a V8 car, then waiting for people to think it’s over and then release another one for kicks and giggles.
I know I have said this before, but I will say it again! You guys do the best and funniest intros ever on RUclips! I am surprised you guys are not on TV!
I’d say even in terms of reliability, the g20s aren’t far off. The B58 engine is probably BMW’s most reliable engine especially with it being worked on in collaboration with Toyota themselves, on top of it being present in the Supras. I would assume that with that engine being in a Toyota vehicle, that I get that reliability of Toyota as well. Overall both are great vehicles and you can’t go wrong with either. I personally am purchasing an M340i next month. I really wouldn’t consider any bmw other than the m340i, purely cause of the fact it’s their most reliable engine worked in collaboration with Toyota.
Thank you guys so much for putting together this review! I’ve actually been contemplating this car as an alternative to a BMW M340i or M3 Competition. Yes, a naturally aspirated V8 is awesome and the instrument cluster is unique. However, for the money, I can’t get past what appears to be a slow-to-react shifting system and a center console from 20 years ago. For this to be “the last of its kind”, Lexus could have gone above and beyond to make this car, indeed, special. Instead, it’s a reliable car wrapped in nostalgia. Unless Lexus comes out with another true ISF, I’ll keep looking at purchasing a BMW, regardless of how soulless they’ve become. Not going to pay that much money, plus dealer markup, for something I could have gotten a generation ago.
aren t u scared of bmw will break down within 5 years and will be expensive ( like turbo related stuff cuz those lexus engine family are amongst the more reliable on earth look at those million miles 4 liters....( work only if you intend to keep it )
I'd get an E90/E92 M3 over this Lexus. That car came out s little over a decade ago and has a 4 L V8. Seeing as this Lexus is dated, you can make an argument for getting a cheaper, more fun M3.
THIS. Those 8 speeds haul ass over 100. GS460 is similar I can keep up with GTI golfs and 340s in multiple rolls (especially when they are pulling timing cus of heat - FI lol) and they are much quicker on paper.
I'd love to own a Lexus. Great reliability, build quality, driving experience, and value. Sadly though, their mediocre interior design and horrid infotainment system makes it a deal breaker for me.
This car def has more character than am m340i or a c43. Heck even more than a c63 or an m3. I am still in college but by the time I graduate I hope the prices for these trickle down to the mid 40 thousand/high 30 thousand dollar range so I can snag one of these! Either this or a CT5V Blackwing
SOUND captured is superbly accurate to this GSF owner’s ear. WOW. Bought used GSF (30k miles) vs expected IS500 precisely because of larger backseat, extra cooling systems, and curious lack of Covid related appreciation evidenced with IS F and Chevy SS manual. Time will tell if serious sport Lexus proves in same cost league as leisurely LS sedans owned for decade at least, or if closer to Porsche 911 which is epic but waaaay above maintenance cost of Lexus products I’ve owned since 1997.
I have an IS300h in Asia. It's not quick as this one obviously (not quick at all) but it looks like a sports car but has great mileage and is damn reliable as a daily driver.
I read somewhere that the Launch Edition beat on in this video is being sold as a new car in Canada with a markup, asking nearly $100K CAD. Ridiculous. Mine isn't a Launch Edition, it's a Premium, but I paid MSRP and it wasn't beat on by a couple journalists before the break-in was completed.
472 horsepower - IS 500 Lexus 2022 - Resell value is higher too. The IS 500 has a maximum output of 472 horsepower at 7,100 rpm and 395 lb. -ft. of peak torque at 4,800 rpm.
A V8 made to last at that price is a nugget! As an European needing a quite compact family car, full thermic, still afordable, such a thing with 4 full seats and a trunk and manual transmission would reach the perfection, beating European cars in long term reability, it would sell fast in that price range, crushing all competitors in V8 pricing, before the EU regulations kill fine authentic mecanic...
This might have been covered already below, but it seems a bit unfair to criticize the engine because it lost in an LC500 when going up against a Supra. The LC500 is way heavier, and the Supra is lighter than the IS500. LC500: 471hp, 4300lbs, 9.1 p/w, 4.4s IS500: 472hp, 3900bs, 8.3 p/w, 4.4s Supra: 382hp, 3400lbs, 8.9 p/w, 3.9s M340i (rwd): 382hp, 3800lbs, 9.9 p/w, 4.4s By these measurements, the IS500 has the best power-to-weight. Although, it does seem odd that the power-to-weight can be so different and yet can lead to the same 0-60 time. Since torque is most often associated with acceleration, I wonder if torque-to-weight would be more meaningful. LC500: 398 lbft, 4300lbs, 10.8 t/w, 4.4s IS500: 395 lbft, 3900lbs, 9.9 t/w, 4.4s Supra: 368 lbft, 3400lbs, 9.2 t/w, 3.9s M340i (rwd): 369lbft, 3800lbs, 10.3 t/w, 4.4s At least here, the fastest time is from the best torque-to-weight figure. But there's enough variation from the other cars to find torque-to-weight to not be all that convincing. Of course, the turbos on the inline-6 are producing max torque at 1800rpm where the V8 is only reaching max torque at 4800rpm. I would hope launch mode from both cars would put them near max torque off-the-line. In any case, it would probably be more meaningful to test the IS500 against the M340i (non-x-drive), and to test on the quarter-mile. Perhaps then the extra horsepower from the IS500 can be experienced.
Every Lexus I see looks like there is more space between the fender and the front wheel than there is with the fender and the real wheel which makes the car look lopsided. They should just lower that front a bit which would really make a nice difference in the look.
I've always been a fan of Lexus & the OG ISF is a classic from that era's class of NA V8s, but I have no idea what Lexus has been doing with their modern sports cars. They continue to release them at the same premium as their completion but with less performance
Resale value is a huge key feature of this. IS-Fs are now going for a lot of coin for as old as they are--even high mileage ones. The competition to this will not hold its value nearly as well years down the road.
After a week of ownership, my IS500 Premium is everything I had hoped for and then some! This car and the c8 corvette are the only car I want to currently purchase. It definitely be worth more than m cars, and amgs in the future
The editing in these videos is so immaculate..🔥 👌
Are you kidding me the interior is gorgeous , so many physical buttons and wonderfully reserved .
I'd have to agree that the emotional connection is such a huge factor for making a decision on a car. I drove a Supra, an M240i, an S3 and an S4, and I still ended up falling in love with the Veloster N. Did not expect to, but just felt something driving that car I didn't feel with any other car. The only other thing that made me feel so giddy and excited was an RC-F.
pls Lexus, keep making V8 cars, when I get enough money, I'll definitely buy one!
I absolutely love everything about this car. It's perfect for me and my family. Minus the gas mileage and MSRP.
I have a 17 Mustang Gt and I was side by side with one of these the other day.. I got the jump on him even with my Manual but for the most part we were side by side all the way to a 100 even with me having to row my own gears.. Thank God for my 373 gearing..
It has the features, styling and the performance expected of an IS F, so I'm not sure why they didn't just release it as the new IS F...
Same reason he mentioned - everyone would miss the point and compare it to the M3, C63, RS5, etc. which are all much faster. By not doing the F wide body fenders, race seats, suspension, etc. it costs a lot less and won't be cross shopped with the faster competition - emotion>>>>
You'll see why they're not throwing around the full "F" late this year or H1 next.
Great review. I prefer old school Mk2 MR2 with another old school supercharged Camry engine myself. But what a glorious sound and visceral thrill this IS 500 F can deliver!
Alternatively, you can buy a 2nd or 3rd gen Lexus GS with a 4.0 V8 1UZ-FE (or 4.3 V8 3UZ-FE) for about 1/10th the price at $5k-$6k.
Perfection of internal combustion engines. 🔥
Just a proper NA V8!! If you like Lexus reviews, I've made a few on them. If you have time let me know what you think :)
The editing is getting bang on.
I'm a huge Lexus fan, I have owned an IS-F for almost 13 years now - but this car just seems like a parts bin special and was made for North America only. The original IS-F will out run and out handle the IS500. Hopefully we will see a new IS-F with the Tundra V6 Turbo.
Lol not a chance kiddo 😂
@@jake2772 I've driven both. Guess which car weighs more....Kiddo.
ruclips.net/video/7Jn9_4u0qZI/видео.html
@@MisterSkizzels lol
@@jake2772 It's true they are slower and heavier than the old one lol. Even the GS460 from 2007 which I have is barely slower than this, the older models weigh less.
@@N4CR sweet
It's such a good looking car those head light are killer
I drive the 14 IS250 so I can only imagine the experience being 1000X better.
I wish they'd bring this to the UK! It's literally up there as my all time favourites.
The Era of Dealerships is ending!!!!!!! mark my words
Remember that time when people said the LC 500 would be the last great N/A V8 car from Lexus, and then three years later they made this thing? I think Lexus is catching on to a strategy of releasing a V8 car, then waiting for people to think it’s over and then release another one for kicks and giggles.
I would buy this in a heartbeat over the Germans
BMW engines are always bullet proved as hell. The problems about BMW are not from the engines but the side components.
The uproar the new C63 caused with its 4 cylinder is proof that how a car makes you feel, rather than how capable it really is, matters the most.
@@JoiceVaderd i was talking about the UZ lexus 4 liter v8 the million miled ones... not too familiar with the gr v8 family but most be similar
@@JoiceVaderd no one is cross-shopping one of the least dependable BMWs ever made with the IS 500...
old school is right, that whole infotainment section would be so cool in the 90's
Bruh! The intro alone earned you a new subscriber.
Its like getting a new car that was made 10 years ago but I like it
Gorgeous car and still fresh with tech and class.
Intro was epic funny. I replayed it at least 8 times lol
is500’s 0-60 might not be fast, but the 100-200 is definitely faster than m340i, c43, and s4
THIS. Those 8 speeds haul ass over 100. GS460 is similar I can keep up with GTI golfs and 340s in multiple rolls (especially when they are pulling timing cus of heat - FI lol) and they are much quicker on paper.
What color grey is that? It looks amazing
its part of the launch edition i think the first 500 or so off the lot were that color

Great jobs!
i love the comparison to the grandmas blueberry pie, perfectly explained
I'd love to own a Lexus. Great reliability, build quality, driving experience, and value. Sadly though, their mediocre interior design and horrid infotainment system makes it a deal breaker for me.
I daily drive a IS 200t. The C8 and the IS500 are THE cars for me this generation.
You know what's good about the interiors on them? They don't break.
Check out the interior on the Ls 500 these guys did a review on
I wonder if Yamaha designed this engine with them? A 5.0L, cross plane V8 with a 7200 redline is amazing.
I have no issue with giving up speed for a great sounding V8
I own a mk4 Lexus GS 450h f sport so I support this video.
I am romanian and I'm pretty sure the song in the intro is from Romania. Wasn't expecting that on a V8 Japanese car review :))
Luv ur reviews :) plz review the LC 500 Convertible! Thx
Hey Joe If you like Lexus reviews, I've got a review on the LC500 coupe (I know not convertible 😄)... If you have time let me know what you think :)
maybe im finally used to that grill but lexus looks nice again
SOUND captured is superbly accurate to this GSF owner’s ear. WOW. Bought used GSF (30k miles) vs expected IS500 precisely because of larger backseat, extra cooling systems, and curious lack of Covid related appreciation evidenced with IS F and Chevy SS manual. Time will tell if serious sport Lexus proves in same cost league as leisurely LS sedans owned for decade at least, or if closer to Porsche 911 which is epic but waaaay above maintenance cost of Lexus products I’ve owned since 1997.
Beautifully produced video.
I drove this car today. I didn’t buy it but I might later.
I have an IS300h in Asia. It's not quick as this one obviously (not quick at all) but it looks like a sports car but has great mileage and is damn reliable as a daily driver.
My only gripe with it is that there was no Mark Levinson option here.
They never miss with the intros💀💀😂
LC500: 471hp, 4300lbs, 9.1 p/w, 4.4s
IS500: 472hp, 3900bs, 8.3 p/w, 4.4s
Supra: 382hp, 3400lbs, 8.9 p/w, 3.9s
M340i (rwd): 382hp, 3800lbs, 9.9 p/w, 4.4s
By these measurements, the IS500 has the best power-to-weight. Although, it does seem odd that the power-to-weight can be so different and yet can lead to the same 0-60 time.
Since torque is most often associated with acceleration, I wonder if torque-to-weight would be more meaningful.
LC500: 398 lbft, 4300lbs, 10.8 t/w, 4.4s
IS500: 395 lbft, 3900lbs, 9.9 t/w, 4.4s
Supra: 368 lbft, 3400lbs, 9.2 t/w, 3.9s
M340i (rwd): 369lbft, 3800lbs, 10.3 t/w, 4.4s
At least here, the fastest time is from the best torque-to-weight figure.
NA V8 sport sedans are starting to pull big money in the used market in Australia. Collectors items in a sea of mobile fridges.
Resale value is a huge key feature of this. IS-Fs are now going for a lot of coin for as old as they are--even high mileage ones. The competition to this will not hold its value nearly as well years down the road.
I liked the old school early 2000's IS 300, the small 4 door. Fun car.
Yea I have 3 of them. Great car. Smooth engine
