We need Elm like that back here! We get American Elm and it is very stringy stuff, we just cringe when we hear the word. anyhow, thanks for another great video, we definitely appreciate all the love we have received from your subscribers as well!
Hi again Mike, in the UK April Fools Day ends at 12:00, so being an American I can not tell you how much fun I had at the expense of my British colleagues due to my belief I was exempt from the 12:00 rule, every year for 20 years at Volkswagen Group I got the same people! Melissa would have loved it.
I know it's overkill, but I bought one of Chris's big commercial 28 ton splitters over two years ago. After an old back injury came back to haunt, I could no longer use my old beam splitter without great pain, and I damn sure couldn't swing a maul more than a few times. I split all our firewood, usually in one or two different day sessions, and also help split the wood that some friends get off our farm each year. It has changed splitting from a task that i dreaded for the pain it caused me, to a day I fully enjoy in the woods. Wolfe Ridge makes one hell of a well built piece of equipment, and I don't regret a cent we spent on it.
We used to have a lot of elm trees here in upstate NY and burned a lot of it for heat. But I remember it being a lot stringyer ( if that's a word) and nearly impossible to split by hand! We didn't have a wood splitter in those days. Just needed a big door on the furnace!
Mike, great video showing the comparison of different hard woods. We have a lot of dead standing elm in the central part of PA where we live and your right, we don't mess with it. Too hard on saw chains and hard to split. Has a great heating quality and leaves little ash but not feasible to work with. Keep up the great videos Mike!
As an April Fools day tradition, you and Melissa should have a splitting contest (Give her the elm and you have either the oak or cherry). She will probably still win. Don't know how you do all these videos and still hold down a full time job but I sure do appreciate it. Thanks :)
Boy you are cranking these videos out! I don't know the deal but have but you have GOT to keep that machine. I deliver rounds to both my kids who split themselves but if I needed a slitter, yours would be at the top of the list. Keep on enjoying.
MIKE, your videos and music choices really do pull you in, and the content, editing, and explanation of equipment always awesome! Hang on! The train is definitely headed on the right track, Yinzer doin it! Cant wait for your next one! THANKS!
I don't know if that's the same type of elm we have here in Central WI. The stuff we have here is incredibly stringy, and the grain twists as it runs. The problem is most of our firewood these days is elm because it is all dying. I cut down a large elm last fall and bucked it into 12" lengths so I could split it w/ my maul (16+" would've been much more difficult). It would not split with the maul, you needed to use a wedge. Then another wedge. And often times you would stick a third wedge in because they would just get stuck in the stringy grain. After that tree, I swore I would never split another elm by hand again. That's when I started researching wood splitters, and stumbled upon your channel, amongst other resources. After much research, I ordered a Wolfe Ridge 35C. I look forward to getting my hands on that, and seeing what it can do with our stringy elm around here!
For a future video, could you please discuss the regen on the RK37. Any problems with it? How often does it require regen? Can you keep working while it is going through the process, etc. Thanks, Mike.
Another awesome video, can’t wait to see what joke she got you with. It’s funny, I went the entire day and didn’t hear April’s fool once, guess I’m getting too old hahaha. You know you’re old when your grandchildren are having children. 😭. Oh yea, congratulations on being grandparents this year, ya’ll never be the same! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. God Bless all!
I love my MS 360 & MS 361. I use my MS 660 when I have to and need a longer bar but my 60 cc saws are my favorite for most work. My 360 and 361 have 20 inch bars with 3/8 LGX chain. The 360 has a pro Total bar and the 361 an Oregon Pro Lite bar. My 660 has a Holzforma 25 inch bar on it.
Thanks mike for all the great videos! You sold me on a wolferidge! Ordered a WR compact commercial 28, should be here by the end of the month. Thanks again, your neighbor to the south (west Virginia)
Mike a few videos ago when you went to great lengths to pull out an Elm tree. I thought man rather you than me. I hate that stuff because it splits horribly most of the time Glad you got an easy one.
I fell for that green deal video , I almost blew a gasket lol i'm sure the elm is heavy too , that's a nice splitter saves a lot of time but it won't make you strong as splitting by hand , we heated for a season or two when i was a youngster and it's a lot of work gathering firewood even finding tree's to cut back then for my dad
Mike you don't know how easy you have it, even your elm is straight grain, out on the west coast there is a knot or two in every round of firewood, makes it a lot harder to split ;)
I have wondered if a person had a splitter like that if they could make some money just splitting wood for others? Their wood or if a person hooked up with a tree service so they could sell the wood? I am not interested in having a bunch of wood stored in our yard but it does look fun to run one. Just wanted your thoughts.
Never had a splitter - just a splitting maul and a chainsaw. I was lucky to live in a new log house near Raccoon creek state park (Beaver County, Pa) 4 + acres. Land appeared to have been timbered a while back. First grew the sumack (you know - worthless weed trees) then the black locust and the predominant tree still standing was maple. The maple overshadowed the locust and they died off / fell over at 4 to 6 inch. When I got there the locust were dead fall on the ground with the bark falling off. Best fire wood I ever burned - the wood dulled a chain and threw sparks when cutting. I burned this and split maple in a big-ol coalbroakdale Darby cast iron stove. The locust burned with a bright almost blue flame. I always wanted to try some anthracite hard coal but never got a chance. Well I am rambling Thanks for the videos and a glance at your family. Your a lucky bunch (lots of work too)
I have a 22 ton powerhorse 3 point log splitter. The six way wedge would be great for my work but northern doesn't offer for my tool. I'm a welder by trade can you please send me the part # or the specs so I can fabricate one?
Red elm is some of my favorite to burn, we’ve got tons of it around here. I’ve hit pieces with an 8lb maul 20-30 times n not gotten it to split, I don’t even try anymore just take it straight to the splitter. Thumbs up
I'm watching you split the elm and I'm thinking "Wow! I've never had elm split that easily!" Then you say this elm splits easily. 🤣🤣 The old-time woodworkers who really understood wood would use elm in places they did not want the wood to split. For example... Seats on chairs. My daughter bought some chairs made out of spruce and the seats are all splitting. An elm seat would never split. That's a great log splitter! I like how fast the piston is.
Wish I could find some Elm that splits as easy as the stuff you were hand splitting. Throw some Sycamore and Gum on the old girl too just for good measure.
oh wow 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏻♂️ your daughter got you good 😄 i would have text from the same place in ohio an hour later: "i'm halfway there and blew a tire 🤯🤯🤯 what a day this turned out to be" 🤣🤣 that fiskars is a heck of a splitter.
I love the Honda engines very reliable ,i have a northern tool splitter.comparing that to the wolf Ridge, its like going back to ax and wedges. The wife shut me off after I bought the everthing attachment grapple.I love your channel but its killing me.I want all the toy's
Second thought to other heavy duty wood splitters might be a Timberwolf or Multitec or in Canada it would be Cord king or the newest is the Bell check out the youtube they posted it will split a tree lenght at a time . Maybe if you get to 40 cords maybe move to a woodprocessor , some nice one one units out there . Have a good on Mr. Morgan . hopeful not on the hate list . Still have 20 inches in the bush and the same on the golf course ( Osprey Links )
Red elm is pretty easy as long as it isn't too big and not twisted. Fing a piece American elm medium size branch wood to test; only thing I can do with them is noodle them with the chainsaw.
I enjoyed the new green deal video, it is mind boggling how as soon as you become institutionalized you throw common sense right out the window. As always another great video.
Mike, I know that elm is some kind of miserable wood to split. My grandfather used to make his own rake, hoe and scythe handles out of elm. He always told me how "stringy" it was so it very rarely broke on one of his tools. The old bucks knew that stuff.
Mike trying lower the splitter a little so the wood is being pushed downward and won’t come back on you ! Nothing worse having your axe or maul bounce back at you.
omg run , zombie deers. actually we have those in kansas. I wish I had one of those 30 years ago. my Brave 24 ton, two stage pump, eats the Chinese elm like nobody's business. so when most around me walks away from it , I wood load up. lol see pun there. awesome video
Gosh Dog those oak logs are so Huge behind you it looks like you photo shopped them closer to the foreground. Heck of a perspective laying there in the background...😨
Nice machine! But making Saw logs into firewood? Ouch! I'd think there'd be more profit in making lumber/boards/cabinet wood... But yeah, sawing/drying/marketing would be more work and need more time and space. That Elm though, sawed 4/4, in the round, live edged, with a 12/4 slab from the middle. That would be sweet cabinet wood...
We need Elm like that back here! We get American Elm and it is very stringy stuff, we just cringe when we hear the word. anyhow, thanks for another great video, we definitely appreciate all the love we have received from your subscribers as well!
Thank you!
Great looking splitter
Solid!!! Good job Mike
6-way starts at 8:00. 6-way with Elm starts at 9:14. Done at 10:13.
That Splitter Walked right Thru that Elm!!👍👊
Hi again Mike, in the UK April Fools Day ends at 12:00, so being an American I can not tell you how much fun I had at the expense of my British colleagues due to my belief I was exempt from the 12:00 rule, every year for 20 years at Volkswagen Group I got the same people! Wow that Wolfe ridge is a heck of a machine Mike. Great video. 👍🏴

I know I have commented on it before but the sound of wood splitting through a hydraulic splitter is amazing.
Video idea for you Mike:
Tree identification for the less experienced woodcutters in your area of the country.
Appreciate all your wisdom!
I agree. I may be able to identify an oak, cherry and poplar but that’s about it. Keep up the excellent work.
We used to have a lot of elm trees here in upstate NY and burned a lot of it for heat. But I remember it being a lot stringyer ( if that's a word) and nearly impossible to split by hand! We didn't have a wood splitter in those days. Just needed a big door on the furnace!
ALWAYS SOME GOOD STUFF ..... THANKS FOR THE INFO ON THE SPLITTER AND THOSE 4 AND 6 WAY BOTH WORK EASY !!! NICE !!
That was interesting, thanks Mike

I'll be doing PM on my old 20 ton tomorrow. Filter, new hydraulic fluid. Replaced motor last fall. Would love to have the over kill from Wolfe Ridge.
Great video, that six way splitter is awesome!

It is an awesome splitter I must agree......easy change to 6 way......... :)
Oh man....warmed me up just watching you Mike! Cheers!
Awesome log splitter
Hi folks from Manitoba Canada i just love your videos
I love my MS 360 & MS 361. I use my MS 660 when I have to and need a longer bar but my 60 cc saws are my favorite for most work. My 360 and 361 have 20 inch bars with 3/8 LGX chain. The 360 has a pro Total bar and the 361 an Oregon Pro Lite bar. My 660 has a Holzforma 25 inch bar on it.
Great investment, you're unstoppable Mike!🇺🇸
The best money I have spent... I love my new Wolf Ridge !!!
Thanks mike for all the great videos! You sold me on a wolferidge! Ordered a WR compact commercial 28, should be here by the end of the month. Thanks again, your neighbor to the south (west Virginia)
Keep em coming Mike as you have failed to disappoint me yet! The splitter is an absolute beast & I really like it!
Bill... :~)
That 6 way is Awesome puts my little black diamond splitter to shame lol
Do you prefer the splitting axe over a splitting maul?
Your having the kind of life that i would enjoy, but month la not at the rendez vous.annyway it is la Nice To watch you. From Canada
The wood splitter is the real deal!!!
Gum,yellow locust, sycamore, and shag bark hickory are very tuff to split also.
Good day again and watching you on each vid from Québec, but we still have a lot of snow. Tyrrs Mike.
Hey I like all your videos they are really cool
Mike a few videos ago when you went to great lengths to pull out an Elm tree. I thought man rather you than me. I hate that stuff because it splits horribly most of the time
Glad you got an easy one.
That splitter is a beast! And as far as hand splitting that elm, woah nice work man haha. That stuff gives ya a run for your money! Take care Mike.
Mike are you going to do a close up and in depth video on the wolf ridge?
I did, go back and check it out. Go to our home page and look through the videos. There are a couple on it.
Elm's resistance to splitting is one of the reasons it was traditionally used for axle and wheel parts on wagons.
Another great vid, Thanks Mike
Mike, i didn't even hear a change in the engine when you split that elm. I would have expected the splitter to work harder.
Awesome Splitter.
Mike you don't know how easy you have it, even your elm is straight grain, out on the west coast there is a knot or two in every round of firewood, makes it a lot harder to split ;)
That elm is some pretty good !!! Would love to see some off a saw mill!!!
i wish i had the need for that wolf ridge. it looks like an aawesome machine. HAVE A DAY👍👍👍👍👍👍
I *_do_* have a need for it. We burn between 32 and 40 face cords per year. I just don’t have the money for a new splitter right now :(
I have wondered if a person had a splitter like that if they could make some money just splitting wood for others? Their wood or if a person hooked up with a tree service so they could sell the wood? Hi Mike,
Which of the three trees is the better performer in the stove?
I really like your videos, thsnks
I have a 22 ton powerhorse 3 point log splitter. The six way wedge would be great for my work but northern doesn't offer for my tool. I'm a welder by trade can you please send me the part # or the specs so I can fabricate one?
Man, that Fiskars is a beast! Great video
How about some black locust or green hickory ????
I ended up with a bunch of Willow for the campsite that's some stringy wood to split.
Do you or have you sharpened the ears on the 4 or 6 way wedges?
Can I ask how much wood was you splitting in a year when you started this channel and how much you are splitting now
Hello Mike...…..would you still agree that frozen wood off all species splits easier?
Red elm is some of my favorite to burn, we’ve got tons of it around here. I’ve hit pieces with an 8lb maul 20-30 times n not gotten it to split, I don’t even try anymore just take it straight to the splitter. Thumbs up
Have you seen Jimmy Houston"s deer heard?
Tip- use the forks on the tractor to raise the wood up so not to bend over. I used to do it that way.
I'm watching you split the elm and I'm thinking "Wow! I've never had elm split that easily!" Then you say this elm splits easily. 🤣🤣 The old-time woodworkers who really understood wood would use elm in places they did not want the wood to split. For example... Seats on chairs. That's a great log splitter! I like how fast the piston is.
The Wolfe grunted a little on the elm but still got her done.
That elm looks easy.
Time to go get a #9 👍🤠
Mike, Where's part 2 of part 1 chicken coup video #26. Really enjoy your videos.
@@Morgansunleashed yea? I'm guessing that's where you wanted the " pool" to be after Mike layed out the framing for it! LOL !!
Wish I could find some Elm that splits as easy as the stuff you were hand splitting. Throw some Sycamore and Gum on the old girl too just for good measure.

Your a lot better than me with an axe, I can’t ever hit the same crack ! 😄
Like mother, like daughter.... and that's a good thing.
Red elm is pretty easy as long as it isn't too big and not twisted. Fing a piece American elm medium size branch wood to test; only thing I can do with them is noodle them with the chainsaw.
Hey Mike I thought that was hickory when I watched a video of you pulling it out elm makes good firewood though
Yeah. We aren't as young as we used to be.
Mike, do you use anti-kickback chains on your Stihl? It sure throws a lot more chips than mine seems to.
I wish oak spilt that easy where I come from when using a 6lb axe
Missed your glasses at the 12:37 mark when you're getting ready to read some hate comments from your phone. LOL
I do that all the time lol
Hi from allen an brenda from canada have a good day
Elm, it’s like trying to split dry maple. The fist couple of hits, if your not careful, you’ll end up eating the axe. 👍
I think it split easy because of the Fiskars splitting ax
Mike you might want to check and see that was American Elm or Chinese Elm the later is harder to split
Melissa would split the elm on the first swing😉
one-handed
I WANT ONE! Heck yeah I'd love to do a years worth of wood in half a day!!!! That's what I'm talking about!!!
I enjoyed the new green deal video, it is mind boggling how as soon as you become institutionalized you throw common sense right out the window. As always another great video.
Handclap,👍👏

Again Nice video, Chicken Sandwich worthy. BKCS!
Good morning Mike. It's April 2nd, so I don't know if you survived whatever Melissa had in store 😀
Thanks for my morning video.
I made it!
omg run , zombie deers. actually we have those in kansas. I wish I had one of those 30 years ago. my Brave 24 ton, two stage pump, eats the Chinese elm like nobody's business. so when most around me walks away from it , I wood load up. lol see pun there. awesome video
I can't split elm. I have to cut it into chunks. My elm does not have a straight grain.
Gosh Dog those oak logs are so Huge behind you it looks like you photo shopped them closer to the foreground. Heck of a perspective laying there in the background...😨
Gotta love those kids 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Elm is just so stringy
i think i saw blackhawks flying over your property better watch out mike doc coming for you
Hmmm, lucky you. Now you have two women looking to scheme you on future April firsts. My condolences ... :)
Nice machine! But making Saw logs into firewood? Ouch! I'd think there'd be more profit in making lumber/boards/cabinet wood...
