Jeff Lynn and ELO were a Band like no other in the 70s. A complete orchestra with Horn and string sections. They were unbelievable Live in concert. Those were the days of great music. Thanks
Don't worry, this is the classic version. This song puts the classic in classic rock. Probably their most popular song, it saturated the airwaves and continues on classic Rock radio everywhere. It's one of those songs that folks my age can't believe people never heard of it. Probably a bit presumptuous on our part. Anyway, glad you were able to experience it. RUclips and your channel is helping bridge generations musically, that should never have gotten so far apart. 👍👍
A Masterpiece!!! ELO showed what true musicians are. They don't write them like this anymore which is so sad....what's happened to the talent pool in the music industry???? Nothing today, or in the last 20-30 years, comes close to what was created in the 60's and 70's.
When I was younger, and heard this on our “Rock radio” I thought is was “Medieval Woman” due to Jeff’s stretch of the word. I told this to my brother, and he laughed and said “That could be a good song too”. 🎸😉😎
Right on the button Shawn. ELO in the 70's was like the Beatles in the 60's. Each album was different from the last and I couldn't wait for the next one to come out just like I did in the 60's with the Beatles.
Another of their big hits! Seriously, you couldn't turn on the radio in the 70s and not hear a new, killer ELO song. So glad I grew up back then, these songs are in my long term memory and make me so happy. Glad that you can appreciate them now and keep them alive.
Great song! Have you heard "Showdown" by ELO. In my opinion their best single. Released back in 1973 so overdubbed edgy sounding strings of actual band mrmbers rather than a more polished sound of a full orchestra as iin their later output. If you do have a listen then make sure it's the original from "On The Third Day" album rather than later versions with smoother sounding strings and a softer less incisive overall sound.
Great reaction ! Thank you for this and your commentary, which always gives me such interesting information that I never knew. Strange Magic next, please. For me that’s the top song from this album !
Love ELO! Jeff Lynne was a musical genius! Great reaction Shawn. I hope you do more ELO. There are so many great songs! If you haven’t heard these, check out Do Ya, Can’t Get It Out of My Head, and All Over The World. It’s a rabbit hole to go down of great music. 😊
Great suggestions! Also Concerto for a Rainy Day, Sweet Talking Woman, Telephone Line, Showdown, too many to name. Their cover of Roll Over Beethoven, either MV or live is fantastic too.
I remember seeing ELO in the late 70’s at the Oakland Arena. They were so good This particular song I remember because of keyboardist Richard Tandy waving his right hand then after the chorus that says evil woman then he dose the walk down the keys. I thought that was just so cool to watch back then and I still remember it. Hahaha
Shawn, I'm not sure why you couldn't find the original album version, it's one of the first 5 or so results that comes up when you do a YT search for the song. What you missed was an orchestral intro that beautifully tees up the rest of the song. Oh well, glad you loved the song. It's the song that hooked me on the band! As for you next ELO reaction, you mentioned, *"Strange Magic",* and, *"Boy Blue".* Both are great tracks! *"Strange Magic",* is a mesmerizing soft ballad, and, *"Boy Blue",* is a rollercoaster of a song with strings galore and several tempo changes, about a war hero returning to his home town from fighting in the Crusades, to wild adulation and fanfare. (Please get them from their original albums. Don't use compilation albums like the one you used for this reaction, because compilation albums frequently use single edits instead of the full-length original songs.)
Moody Blues had one hit with an ELO vibe, Gemini Dream! It's groovy and you will like it. Moody Blues have lots of good music with array of instruments 🌠🎻
I can't recall right off if you have already reacted to another of their huge hits, Turned To Stone. The whole thing is great but it's got this section of super rapid fire lyrical cadence and it's really fun. Same goes for their hit Don't Let Me Down.
ELO is one of my all time favorite bands and it's awesome to see someone getting to know their music and loving it too. :) Mr. Blue Sky was the last song in a 4 song suite from this album (Out Of The Blue). You should really check it out, all the songs in the suite. It's called Concerto for a Rainy Day. Summer and Lightning is one of the 4 songs and one of my favorites too by the way. There are just so many ELO songs to do! Do Ya is another good one. Confusion is one of my favorites too and another deep cut. Most of the suggestions people give are hits or singles but those are deep cuts that are really good. Oh, Jungle is really different even for them and is also on OOTB. Love your reactions! :)
A Masterpiece!!! Lol 😅😅 ELO like Steely Dan. Yes. Rush. Pink Floyd. Supertramp Don't put out bad. 🎉🎉🎉 songs. 🎉🎉😊😊😊...Love Love my ELO ....One of my all-time favorite bands. Jeff Lynn is a genius who Loves the Beatles and admittedly said he was heavily influenced by The Beatles. 😊😊😊😊
At 1:50 mark in your video, did you catch the lyrical reference to a Beatles song? Paul McCartney takes lead on one of their catchiest songs and it's called, Fixing A Hole. It's such a catchy beautiful song I know you would love it.
That's hilarious, you ended up discovering that anyway in wikipedia. I'm glad they mentioned it. And yeah I bet you really would love Fixing A Hole. It's a great Beatles song and it's just classic Paul McCartney.
No, he didn't use the original. The one he used is just 4-minutes and 12-seconds long. It's missing the orchestral intro that's on the original. Not sure why he couldn't find it, it's one of the first 5 links that comes up on a YT search for the song.
In the '70s these guys were bigger than any band Had more pop hits than anyone And many playing at the same time on the radio If you really like this song, this is only a splinter of their catalog
Shawn the Real Mind Blower is The Entirety of The " Out Of The Blue" Album Was Completed in Just 3 Weeks of Jeff Lynne writing Constantly Non-Stop But Started With Mr. Blue Sky Which Burst Him out of a Long Writer's Block Which LSD Lasted for Weeks ! "All Over The World" is Great This Time of Year As Santa Makes His Rounds
How about something a little less complex- just a straight rocker titled "Do Ya". Or, have you sampled their studio production of "Roll over Beethoven" ? Get the fire extinguishers handy just in case....
Jeff Lynne (who comes from my home City of Birmingham, UK) is a musical genius and great producer. E.L.O. have loads of great songs and sound better live than they do on the studio versions (you should watch this live). My favourite song of theirs is 'All Over The World' which is a really happy song.

Never a bad tune from these guys. Jeff is a genious!

Jeff Lynne and ELO are just a fabulous group. Always been big fan since early 1970s. Beautiful work. Great reaction as usual Shawn...🎤🎶👍
It's so great to see you grooving to this. Jeff Lynn is a remarkable composer, performer and producer. And really great live too!
ELO, a serenade of joy every time no matter what the track subject matter……….😊

Now you must hear "Devil Woman" by Cliff Richard, from the same era 🎵
Cliff’s best hit imo…..tho i do like Carrie and We Don’t Talk Anymore
ELO - one if the best concerts I've been to (Toronto - mid 70's) and I've seen a lot of bands.
"My guitar gently weeps!" Beatles song, cover, Jeff Lynn, Prince, ect. Live
Yes yes yes!
