How can you set goals you'll actually follow through on over the long-term? Today we'll explore the idea of "intermediate goals", and show how people like Neal Stephenson (author of Snow Crash) and Matt Thorson (developer of Towerfall and Celeste) used them.

Lol I love that he kept that in there it was hilarious!
0:56-Intermidiate goals are essential in building the skillset you need for the big project an
being able to see our progress and get feedback is a good thing
6:42-Restrict your timescale and ask yourself would you could do in a week or a day and do it. By taking a series of smaller projects which will stretch your capabilities beyond your current level
thank you it was really needed
So what you're saying is... life is like an RPG and our big grand ambition is the final boss, but in order to beat it, we need to gain enough experience from smaller bosses at the start that don't overpower us but helps us level up bit by bit until we're strong enough to conquer the final boss.
William Truong I love that. Thank you very much.
The analogy works kinda with every sort of video game, but I somehow think that RPG fits best. Good comment
That was my exact first thought when I watched this video! Glad to know Im not too geeky.
Or you can just dark souls it and kill the tutorial demon with just the broken sword they give you (hard, tiring, and requires a lot of discipline but some can pull it of)
William Truong this is great
ELEPHANTS. I LAUGHED TOO HARD.
Okay the emphasis on TINY changes is SOOOOO important. In my own personal journey / with clients I call this "evidence of evolution" - I try to identify every tiny, microscopic decision that I make differently, every situation that goes a little bit differently. I think of it like a tree - if you plant a seed and show up the next day looking for a tree, you'll always think there was no growth. The growth is underground and invisible first.
Would u plz make a vidoe on ur daily routine
@Vikas He already did- just in bits and pieces
You also need a video on grammar apparently
Fix a Fix so much negativity
@@fixafix69 Grammar wasn't the problem, it was spelling.
You need a dictionary apparently.

I really dig the new setup and the chill music that was playing throughout the video 😊
Gold man. Keep up the great work!
hey thanx a lot pal!,, this video comes at a pretty good time for me, as i amalready planning my goals for 2018.
Yaaay Thomas I've been waiting for your new upload all week! Time to grab some tea :)
thank you Tom! loved the CIG video yesterday as well
or 2 days ago
thanks bro. Awesome video and knowledge
Thank you for Skillshare, I've been willing to try it for a while now ! :D
I was really happy that I got the book and started to read the best Christmas present ever to read.
OMG Thomas, you do not have any idea how timely you are!
I so needed this video today. I love your videos!
Thank you Thomas for this Video.
Thanks Thomas! You really have a heart
Second Order Incompetence - That's new information for me. Thank you Thomas
And Thanks again Tom. Your the best
Fab as usual!
Love from England 😊
Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks I now have a new author's books to delve into. Thanks so much
Waited your videos for a Long time!! By the way I love your videos so much!!! Hope you can upload more often haha.....
I really got a lot out of this video especially the fact that you have to be seeing regular and tangible results (even if they're small) to stay motivated and that keeping projects just out of reach is a great way to keep improving. I think a lot of times I want to make like Citizen Kane over a weekend but then the day before I realize that there's no way that's happening and so I give up. I think being realistic about where I am and making achievable goals based on that is much, much better haha.
I completely agree. I am training for a marathon and every time I go for a run I am adding to that goal. I may not be running the miles that are going to be run on race day but I am preparing for that day so when the opportunity comes to run on race day I can step into that opportunity. Cheers and blessings to you!
Thank you Brotha. Love you
I love these videos, and they are actually part of our online class assignments...
Wishing you blessings beautiful soul! Small steps even if we restart are still building blocks in our journey that we can use to become better. Its like when building a large building. The taller the building the deeper the foundation needs to be dug. Each set back is just strengthening you with knowledge to know how to get back up and go again. You can do this beautiful soul. May you keep going and find joy in the process.
I really needed this. I have been avoiding even starting projects, because they're so big I don't want to start them because they'll take too long and "I'll just give up after starting anyway". But I think that with this video I'm going to set small goals and see where I get from that. Thank you

I'm like this with my fanfiction. I've been working on a Sherlock vampire fic for a while now, always starting, writing and then doubting myself, waiting a few weeks, starting again. In the meantime I work on other stories, short ones that aren't as 'important' and it helps cause I'm busy writing and thinking about that vamplock in the back of my mind. I have 20 chapters so far and slowly but steadily working on chapters 21 and 22. Small goals, those always seem to work for me.

Man you are always answering my questions before I ask
I see what you did there Thomas~~~ I don't usually set New Year's Resolutions though.
I am more inclined to do smaller goals and more of them. I think that way it gets a bit easier since it rewards with those little bits of accomplishments with each day. But becouse in my college it was mandatory to finish one big project so you couldnt just do it in a day or a week but it forced you think over your process and concentrate on a bigger picture. Although it was a struggle most of the time trying to motivate myself every, i found that it is a good idea to combine the workload with another small project, just enough that working stays fun and managable. Becouse if you overwork yourself you could hate the project again and become hesitant to try a big project again.

I love that you described cooking as meditative. I have used that exact descriptor. It is just so true.
this is sooo true. There is Malay saying that say; 'Sikit - sikit lama lama jadi bukit'. by starting it small it can go big as a mountain. (Bukit means mountain in english)

Hey Frank,
I noticed you had some acne scarring in your old videos. I know you used to be self-conscious about it, so I'm not trying to stir up old wounds with this comment.
I'm struggling with acne scarring myself. I'm seeing dermatologists but they said laser resurfacing wouldn't be a great option for me because of my skin tone and depth of scarring. So, what did you do to solve it?
Your skin looks great now.
Thanks,
Nick
He talked about this in a video already a while back- it was mostly about books to read as a student or something
Thank you
Sir
I know that for me at least, perfectionism is the worst enemy. There are a lot of times I don't even start a project because I really want to do a perfect job on my first try. Therefore, I tend to only start things I know I can do very well. Which is terrible for developing new skills. Whatever you want to do, start it soon, life is short and it's better to do an okay job rather than not doing anything, besides, you can always edit that video, that book, that scuplture, and in the end it will turn out just fine ;)

hit us up with a video on how you have been managing to consistently post videos and how not to burn out in 2018 ...what are your thoughts and maybe some tips to run a channel ! todays video was great !
Awesome video! Knowing how to set achievable goals is very important. Choosing something just beyound our current skill is the best.
Thank you
Great videos! :)
Amazing tip
So I had this idea. I just made the jump from student to graduating and having a job. Any ideas on how to schedule your life, with an actual 7 to 5 job?
finally another useful video
i just bought snow crash and am so exited to read it!!
It's a fantastic book :)
Thomas I've been working on a solo show as an impressionist for what seems like forever (YEARS) ...I have had analysis paralysis so many times with this project, way too many choices on what voices to do, using video and screen behind me, choice of music, finishing a script etc its been so over whelming. I've stopped and started this so many times I've lost count. I have so many ideas but as you've stated I haven't mastered any of them yet. Any advice on where to start ?
GREAT MAN😀
You uploaded it in the right time 💙😅🤩
Pretty good timing with 2018 coming up.
Always such a pleasure watching your videos! Achieving our goals is such a major part of becoming truly limitless! 💣
I was trying to find this video of yours. I remember having watched it at some point but was unable to find it.
This talks about dealing with perfectionism really well, even better than the actual video on perfectionism you'd made earlier (which was good as well! )
thanks!
Any advice on how to stay focused? Would be amazing if you would reply.
Search for this in his CIG podcast, there is an amazing episode there. In short it's something like exercise regularly, obey routines and block distractions
Without being distracted
Thank you for your reply, I will mail you ASAP. Thank You so much once again.
Facing Your Dragons: The Beginning Did you delete your videos on your channel? Or do they have country restriction? :c yours seems interesting to me.
Thanks
Speaking of intermediate goals... I think this is the first video I've done where I'm ACTUALLY satisfied with the music. My strategy with videos has always been to try to improve at least one aspect by 1% every time, but the background music has always been my biggest struggle in that regard.
In the past, I'd just pick tracks and loop them entirely in the background, hoping they'd sound good. But this time, I had a realization: music should punctuate certain points of the video in order to amplify emotion. This time around, I tried identifying some of those points, placing the music accordingly, and then cutting and mixing different loops to make everything fit. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than before.
Anyway, hope you guys enjoy the video :)
Closed captions should be up in a few hours - just have to wait for the company I work with to get them made :)
I’ve been watching your videos for a while, and it’s been amazing to see the progression of your style. Compared to your current videos, your content seemed bland, but now you almost effortlessly provide useful information, all in a polished package.
Great job man, I liked the music this time round and the set looks ace
Thomas Frank of course, for sure and it's awesome to see you talk to this music!!!
Hello, Thomas Frank.
You know, it is not even, JUST about GOALS, it is about, having, a PURPOSE. What is a PURPOSE behind those goals? WHO, WHAT, and, WHY? What is it, that, MAKES THOSE GOALS VALUABLE? I worry, about discovering, WHO I AM AS A PERSON.
Hey, in case you don't know, your videos are pretty fucking good.
I love when you mention authors and books in your videos! I just started Ready Player One and it's definitely something I would not have picked up without having heard of it here first. Thanks for helping me to branch out!!
thank u for this
Starting small gains big progress in end goals.
he didnt want to extend the video for 30 more sec so he can earn more money, thats a gold channel, youtube you need to carry more about him=)

Do a video on how to get a bigger vocabulary (for native english speakers)
Great content always!!! Love the references 🙌
THANK YOu so much
Simple advise but you are so right! Thanks for all you teach us Thomas!!
In language learning, there's a concept (due Krashen) called "comprehensible input" (or "i+1") where you aim to use input that stretches you just enough to improve, but not so much that you don't understand anything. You don't start German with Goethe or French with Sartre, you work with stuff that you already understand 90-95% of (depending on your tolerance for ambiguity), and then make it more difficult as you understand more.
Likewise, sports science includes a principle called "progressive overload", which encourages adaptation that improves a skill by making it just a little bit harder than you can deal with comfortably (e.g. a weight that's not so light that you can just keep lifting and lifting without getting tired, but not so heavy that you injure yourself trying to lift it).
And to be honest, this sort of gradual improvement is, as you say, so universal as to be the model for any sort of education or improvement. But regardless of whether you develop this way, or already are a hidden genius, it requires frequent effort in a meaningful and directed way.
Don't know if you have talked about this but I would really like to see your perspective and/or opinion on those motivational videos/speeches that say that college degrees are useless, seeing as you yourself are a college student.
Cheers from a university student from Portugal!
If you listen to some of his podcasts, you can find that he has actually tackled about that topic quite intensively
Daniel Fernandez didn’t know he had a podcast... what’s it called?
It's called "The College Info Geek Podcast" and if I'm not mistaken, he started it before even starting RUclips full-time. I don't know which episodes Daniel was referring to, but here's the link to all the episodes.

After seeing skillshare ad on every other video finally i am manipulated to try it😮
Another important elephant is the fact that most of people lose interest or focus in long term or big projects more often. So tackling small projects first, in whatever area it is, can help with motivation while growing skills to face the bigger and desired "harder" project.
Thank you Thomas for this great video as well.
I love you so much man, thanks for all your content.
I saw this video 5 yrs ago and here it is 5yrs later and guess what 🤷♀️ still here🤷♀️😮💨😳😵💫🤦🏼♀️
This is super helpful, I have a big programming goal but have been getting overwhelmed by the scope. I need to start smaller and scale up. :)
Solid advice starts around at 6:00, I closed the video because I was bored with the long examples he was giving but I came again it’s a good advice. May be just I like it to the point some people like examples more.
What is a good place to write down our goals so we can check them regularly ? I'm using habit trackers and any.do for task completion but they're not something that keep me in touch with the bigger picture. I'm working on a numbers/excel sheet as we speak but if there would be a good (and preferably free-ish) app for it then i would really like to hear about it. Thanks in advance!

They way you choose your words
And choose the way you make your sentences, is very influencing.
Andy Weir wrote The Martian as a serial story for his blog. You can hear him tell the story about that on Talks at Google YT channel. Your buddy needs to figure out how to break down his novel to get parts of it written so he can see progress and not be disillusioned. Thanks for sharing.
I love it when you speak crazy fast.
Second-order Incompetence, always wanted to know how to explain that!
You can read more about it in Andy Hunt's book Pragmatic Thinking and Learning :)
Yknow, this week i was thinking about this exact topic, this video is awesome!
I WANT THAT SHIRT
great video. so, how would you break down a project like learning a new language?
I appreciate you
Sometimes it feels like I have so many plans and goals yet I never seem to accomplish them. They are just too far away.
This video really reminded me on how important it is to look at your goals on a smaller scale and rather take small steps than try to make impossible leaps at once.
Thank you sir. I will use this knowledge to my advantage in accomplishing my goals.
Eres la ley bro.
What if you feel that it isn't fine to not be a genius? Lately I've been getting myself into a thought vortex that sends me looping around in bad thoughts such as 'you'll never be that good if it doesn't come naturally to you' or The Talented genius vs the hard worker loop. The hard worker can push themselves to perfectly master their craft but the talented genius will reach a point beyond perfecting the craft, they revolutionize it and add another dimension/level to it. I'm trying to get past the idea that one is better than the other, they both can work together to push the craft they both love forward. But sometimes it just sucks to not be the genius, who seems to be able to see and understand the craft in a way you can barely grasp at.
Theteenytweety
The important thing to remember is even people who are "geniuses" need to put in a lot of work to get there. So either way the important thing is to work your ass off and do it effectively.
You should get a hold of the book "Talent is overrated" it tackles a lot of what you are talking about struggling with.
These loops of thoughts, that I know too well, are very counterproductive and get you nowhere than into feeling miserable. Stop them. Accept the reality that you're not a genius, the earlier the better, and start to make plans on how to takle your goals. So you don't have a choice, you have to put in work and time. Being a genius won't come to you by accident unless you're one of those exceptions that experience and survive a brain damage which changes their character dramatically. One in a billion. And that's a good thing because geniuses are often times lacking other (ie social) skills to a point where it makes their life unbearable.
Thank you to everyone for the replies! It really helps, when looping, to get external views, instead of the same old thoughts bouncing off the wall and back to me. Stay awesome guys!
It’s okay, I’m not a genius either! In fact, I’ve done a few IQ tests and I’m bang on average. What helps me is managing my expectations. I *know* I’m not a genius and I just resign myself to the fact that I’m going to need help and more time to grasps new concepts and skills, which is soooooo fine! Do not punish yourself for not getting it on the first go, or the second of the third, ect. A book that has helped with me with this has been Big Magic by Elizebeth Gilbert. She even goes so far as to write the genius off as self destructive and driven purely by ego, and argues that ordinary people have stroked of genius after they have been toiling away, honing their skills for some time. It’s a very whimsical read that encourages you to take the pressure off and to just try and try again.

Quick question about Eric Barone, I wish I could ask him personally, but, was he able to put in the work *every single day*? He I want to learn more about his story, to see the ups and downs, because I think we all hit that rock bottom at some point, but then we get up again, and we fall again, rinse and repeat.
