I own a 6D, and I love it, the Wifi, is very helpful, especially when some clients want a sample of their photos right away when there's no computer around. Same processor, same image quality, and lighter. All of the buttons are on the right side of the camera so I can use it with one hand. And and about the video MOIRE problem, I will confess that video is better on the 5DIII because of the anti-aliasing, but theirs a workaround for the 6D. You can have your own user settings for video and, this will decrease your moire so it won't show up, and here it is for stills and video: Keep the shutter at 1/50 for 24fps and 1/60 for 30fps. •Turn off highlight tone priority and noise reduction •Use ISO's in multiples of 160, they produce the least noise •Use a flat picture profile, I'd recommend Neutral with: Sharpness at 0 (all the way down) Contrast at -2 to -4 Saturation at -2 to -4 This works for me, and saved me a ton of money. Hope this helps
6D's low light performance is way better than the 5D III. This video is superb, nicely made, but damn, go and check those dozens of video ISO comparisons on YT, you'll understand that the 6D has 0 banding noise at 25,600, while the Mk III suffers even from ISO 6400. The 6D has the best sensor in the hole Canon catalog. If you don't believe me, I'll provide a few links. If low light performance is a priority for you (like me) then go with the 6D, it murders every other Canon ever made.
Sorry, there's a fair bit of misinformation here when you talk about moire. Both the 5D-III and the 6D have anti-aliasing filters. They have to in order to avoid moire issues at the native sensor resolution. The reason the 5DIII exhibits less moire is that it bins pixels together in order to generate lower-resolution images for video while the 6D simply samples a fraction of the lines. It's this low-spatial-frequency sampling of an image with high spatial frequencies that causes the aliasing/moire. The pixel binning on the 5D-III acts as a low pass filter, mimicking the effect of an AA filter and reducing moire. If the 5D-III really had an AA filter that was effective for video use, it would have an effective resolution for still photography at the native sensor resolution of only about TWO megapixels (the equivalent of HD video resolution).
I really like Your videos cause they are full "real-life" examples! No 25k ISO comparison which are just useless in any Canon dslrs, no ultra-super-detailed examples - just very good overall view. I really like that. Thanks and keep going!

This is the single most informative video on RUclips. Thank you for taking the time to compare these 2. I am a wedding photographer shooting with a 5d MK2 and looking to upgrade to one of these bodies. I was leaning towards the 5d3 but now I may have to reconsider. Thanks again Dave.
Hi, I'm a little late here but wondering if you thought about enabling the center autofocus point on the 5D III ? I'm wondering if having all of the AF points enabled caused it to continuously hunt vs locking on with the center AF point only?
Excellent review! I'm personally a Nikon video shooter, but I love to see what other companies are doing! It is amazing to see the level that these companies are getting to! Especially, like you said in low light.
I've only gotten to the picture modes so far but it looks like to me that the 6D tends to run a bit more Green/Orange and the 5D Mark III tends to have stronger Reds/Magentas. Also, in the black and white, the 6D almost looks like there is an Orange filter on. The skin is smoothed out and the spotting on the face has definitely evened out.

Hi, Dave! I am an avid follower of your reviews basically because you always do a balanced, non-biased comparisons and also your not melodramatic as Kai. I was hesitating on getting a 6D after using a 60D for a year now but your review helped me to decide on the 6D. Thanks a ton and I hope you will have time to answer when I bother with questions, questions, questions.......
Thank you Dave for providing such a clear and highly informative video. I am currently in the process of purchasing in a new full frame DSLR camera and your video provided me a great insights between the 5D and 6D. Amazing work Dave, thanks again!
The Mark III has a silent mode when shooting in bursts, so it's fine for wedding. Take another look at that. And there is a lot more red on portrait mode with the 5D, or a lot more yellow on the 6D.
This is the first review video of yours that I've seen. I am impressed by your work on the review, it is very insightful and knowledgable! You've helped me see a lot of benefits in both cameras, just with this video. Thank you for taking the time to create it!
You have a great on camera presence. Loved what I think is a fair review. I agree with what you said on professional vs amateur and a clients expectations. I have the 5d Mark III and I know many clients would not be happy
Nice work Dave, I have had my 6D for over a year and have never been happier - I only use the centre focus and also take a bit of surf photography - af hit rate is exceptional using this in aiservo mode
I own both cams, 6d perfect for low light work and landscape as it performs better with high ISO than the 5D mk3. If you shoot fast moving subjects e.g. sport journalism etc then go for the 5D mk3 as it has more AF points and a higher burst rate, other than that, they are both great and sharp full frame cameras, I'm very happy with both :)
Great Video Dave. You provide some great great insights. I've been debating between upgrading to a full frame DSLR and you provided a great deal of info for me to consider. I do have one question, the slow motion video clips at the end, did you record them in 720p 60fps and then scale up? Or, use something like Magic Lantern or Twixtor to slow the clips? Thanks!
Great comprehensive review. Love the swipe comparisons! One minor feedback point. When you're showing the 'up down' comparison swipe on the latitude comparison on a landscape photo, can you do a 'left right' swipe instead? In that way I can more easily see the difference between cameras as a lot of the time I'm seeing the sky from one camera and the green landscape from the second camera. Keep up the good work!
Really enjoyed your review. My 6D is coming tomorrow! I'm excited to step up to a full frame for portraiture...I don't do video very much, but it was interesting to see how both camera's handled lines.
12:01 Dave You have Moire and aliasing on your right shoulder / shirt ? What Camera Did you use? You can see the patterns better in 1080p not in full screen , try it
Hi Dave; Awesome review on 6D and thanks for that. I see that this video has been uploaded in 2013. Nowadays, it is rumored that Canon will be releasing 6D MK II. Do you have any information about that? Would you suggest to wait a bit more for those who are aiming to get a 6D in the next six months or so? Also can you give a bit more info about the time lapse video @18:08? Does the software have a timelapse function (like shoot one frame every X seconds for a period of T hours) or do you have to wait all night and press the "shoot" button regulary? Many thanks
I have almost never used any other focusing point than the one in the middle. It's always been weird to me when people complain about "too few" focusing points. Maybe it's just me.
I feel the same way. I've had an entry level DSLR for many years and learned to focus using the middle and then re compose the shot. Not much of a nuisance if any to me. I suppose for videos and stuff people want better AF. I ended up getting the 6D to upgrade and I love it. I couldn't justify spending more money on the 5D Mark III just for the better AF points.
Nathan C Professional video producers usually use manual focus anyways--for the greater control over the feature. I also like the center point focus better too and I do a lot of sports photography.
Depending on what kind of photography you do , choosing a focus point that is in line and parallel with what you want to be in focus is important as long as you believe that light travels in straight lines...
I have no idea what you're trying to say. Probably because of my poor comprehensions of English. Its not my native language. What I do, is focus with the middle point on whatever I want to have in focus and then recomposing the shot before shooting.
Eirik Havre Nothing wrong with that method. If you do use your centre focus point and recompose be aware of large apertures and short distances between camera and subject. digital-photography-school.com/the-problem-with-the-focus-recompose-method/
It really looks like the comparison between one amazing camera and another amazing camera. the differences are almost microscopic and there is potential intra camera variation than inter camera difference.
Very nice and honest review. I wanted a 5D3 for SO long but when B&H had a holiday sale last year for the 6D with the upgraded 24-105 f/4L lens at $1700 I had to jump on it. I originally thought maybe I was "settling" for the 6D and would still have 5D3 envy. But the fact I don't really shoot video and primarily shoot landscapes, portraits, astrophotography, long exposure and street/urban I think the 6D is amazing and for that kind of work I'm not missing anything by not having a 5D3. I'm really interested to see what Canon comes up with for a 6D2 which is predicted for 2017.
Very helpful video Dave, I'm still attracted to the 5D III. The only thing stopping me is that my semi-pro son took off with my 7D and has never brought it back. I'm positive if I got the 5D he'd bring it back in a heartbeat and I'd never see the 5D again. lol
Thank you for such a great in-depth review between the two cameras. I know it's comparing apples and oranges but I can't wait till the 70D comes out an hopefully you do a tutorial on it also.
I have a 6D Mk 1. It's performance, especially in low light, is nothing like the 6D here. It takes very little light fall to stop the 6D from focusing effectively.
On my Mac at 1080p, there is a lot of differences Dave. At 3:53 the 5D III is a bit sharper and the colors are much clearer (probably what is called dynamic rage, I don't know) and the tree is much crispier to. And at 4:42 the 6D is much much sharper, but it's probably because the 5D was out of focus. That seams obvious to me. I have the 60D and I really wish I had the 5D III. That's the real think for video. But so expensive for me. Thanks again for your tutorials, I learn a lot watching them.
I had my eyes set on a 6D for a while but this video just cemented which camera Im getting. Had a 40D for a few years and looking to upgrade and thought 6D will be worthy upgrade. Only downside for me is I can only use 50mm lense with 6D and the other 2 lenses well I will have to sell. I shoot lot of pics of the cars on a car cruises so low light performance is a must and it seems 6D trumps in areas that are important for my shooting style plus I really do not like or want to use flash at all, I mean I hate using flash. Video is awesome one of the best down to earth comparisons, well done.
Great review! I've been searching the best camera for my budged.. for a long time! Specs, sites and reviews. you solved all my questions in under 30 min! Thx a lot!
Fantastic review! I have a 6D being shipped to me right now with the 24-105mm kit lens, and this makes me pretty confident that it was a great choice. I do shoot in low light a lot, so the auto-focus sensitivity and high ISO performance is a must. I'll just have to live with the moire until I can save up another grand and a half to upgrade to the Mark III.
Dave Dugdale which camera would you recommend for a beginner? I have been looking and the 60d and 6d and was wondering which one would be better to start out with.
Lone Mic Productions Never going to rule out the go pro! It is the perfect compact camera with good quality for half the price of a DSLR, and it being more compact makes it so much easier to carry around as an everyday camera, that if you need it you just take it out! I didn't know they used it on American Horror Story!
Thanks for the review Dave. I needed a backup to my Mk III and decided on the 6D. I'm not much into video, for now, and for still photography and travel, the lower cost and lighter body of 6D will come in handy.
Hi, I'm getting ready to buy my first DSLR and I was wondering if the 6D is still worth purchasing since it's a bit old now? If not, what do you think is a good replacement. Also, I like wildlife....mostly bird shots. Can the 6D handle it? I like that the 6D is full frame.
Amazing video. Perfect comparisons, both video and image. Much respected comparison video. I had a MK2 sold it for a 6D and was really happy. Sold it though, now looking between the two 6D and Mk3.
I've been trying to decide for the past month or so which full-frame canon to upgrade to for video work. EVERY review I found was about how good the cameras were at taking stills, which to be honest, I saw no difference, other than the 6D being much cheaper... Until I came across this review... Your pointing out of the headphone input and the anti-aliasing (among other things) may have swayed me towards the 5D. It does cost a lot more, but for film making, that anti-aliasing is a must! Thanks!
Dave - your reviews are awesome... thank you for taking the time to create this review - it was very enjoyable to watch...even the scenery you're shooting is great... I'm definitely a fan Dave.. keep up the great work - Bless ya
Great review! Thanks for posting. One quick question: My 6d that I recently bought is giving me really stuttery/choppy video when I shoot in 1080 w/ 30fps. I'm using a 95mbps SD card. I noticed in your video here around 19:15 when you show video at the zoo the problem that I am running into is NOT apparent. If you can remember, was that video in 720, 60fps? Because it looks a lot better than what I am currently running into. Any help would be great. You have a new subscriber also. ;)
+1 to Alexander. APS-C and 35MM are two different formats, just as medium format and large formats are different. On my TLR, 50MM is wide-angled, on my 35MM film camera it's standard and on my 60D it is telephoto.
Dave , you made unbelievable job 👏 5/5!!!. Thank you for that . What would you recommend for pictures at night/Aurora Lights? 6D ? 5Dmark3 or D80? I'm so confused to choose. Thank you !
Dave, thank you for such an informative and comprehensive review of both cameras. I am trying to decide as to which one I should choose, and have to admit, I like the Mark III with dual cards. I did subscribe, again, thanks for the time and effort here.
every thing described is good, but never shown low light still photography differences and color corrections. i have both camera's now, i am a indian wedding photographer but not satisfied with 6d in tungsten light video which never gives that result what shows on lcd. kindly give your guidance and difference in tungsten lighting between both camera. i have 24x105 L4 lens with both cameras and having also a 17x40mm L4 lens.day light photography is better in both. But having too much difference in night wedding photography where having sunlight video lights, florescent lights and other decorative lights.
i am just about to buy a 6D for wedding photography and mainly photography use. this is a great review obviously the difference in the price for the two is a problem, for me anyway, and the 6D has some great pro's and some obvious cons in comparison to the 5D mkiii.
thanks for the great review .i would like to know does the 6D has the elizing problem at stills or at videos only .because I am seriously looking to buy one of those. I am not a sports photographer. please let me know am waiting. thanks.
Dave, were the profiles the same for the DR test? It looks like the 6D has a bit more latitude. If you watch where the snow clips on the 5d3. Maybe 1/2 stop more range in the highlights.
Thanks Dave. I'm going for my first full frame and have been very frustrated on whether I should spend the extra. I think the 6D will suffice. I primarily do Landscape and Music photography. Your video helped a lot!
Great review. My experience has taught me one thing. I have come to the conclusion that if you are wanting to produce video dont consider a dslr. No matter how much you spend on a dslr you they dont compete with a dedicated video camera. The Panasonic gh5 is the best dslr for video but there is still a leap to be made when it comes to sound and other video features. The very best Canon is really only a stills camera. But as I am interested in buy a full frame camera for photos I found your comparison very informative.
Thank you, I bought the 6 D, business is tough and I am excited to test wifi potential. Specially if my assistant pick images simultaneously during a shoot and have a proof ready for my clients following the shoot.
Great video Dave! I can really notice the 6D struggling with power cables on the ipad.. Will you be doing a review on the new Nikon D7100? I'm hearing great things with that one!
Wonderful review. I own a 6D and a 5D2 and was wondering if I should upgrade to a 5D3 as I step more into video. This review helped me make my mind up. Thank you.
In the review of the 5DM3, you forgot to mention that the 5DM3 has a special "quiet shutter mode' that you can set in the menu. Then it should beat the 6D.
I use a 60D. I never use all focus points, the camera focusses on the nearest point. Mostly, I choose a focus point to one side so as to focus on the key part of me subject, with the rest spread across the frame.
I'm just giving a review and not complaining about Canon. Great entry camera or experienced photographer as a 2nd. Almost similar results to the 5d Mark III. Hard to make it an apples and oranges comparison. I may not care to much for the Wi-Fi part since it may only have a 4 foot reach approximately reach. These bells and whistles can be enhances by Canon or 3rd party add on products. Firmware update - Corrects most but some still some crazy focusing at times compared to the slow.
Hi, Dave! Loved your video! Which one would you recommend for a wedding photographer? Sometimes the light is very low. People do move but actually not that fast. Only doing photography, no video at all :)
+Adem Ö I see a lot of photographers using the 5d mk iii - but the 6D is so much cheaper, and I'm having trouble actually seeing the differences (except when doing video). So, I'm tempted to buy the 6D
You listed the noise as a reason to choose the 6d unfortunately you neglected to use the burst silent mode for the 5d mark III if you go to the menu for your shooting mode its the one with the s beside it. with this enabled it allows for very quiet use at about the same frame rate as the 6D There were a host of other features that were neglected to mention as well. most notably is the cross focus you were referring to well under certain menu options for the mark3 it actually makes all 5 of the center horizontal row utilize the 4 cross focus feature had this been enabled at the time of your test you would have found that you could have gained the exact same results from the mark 3 but with greater ease as you would have only had to hit the mark anywhere on the horizontal row top to bottom to obtain focus. I completely understand the oversight on these issues because without hours of training they could easily be overlooked. I don't own either though and am only doing research into the one I should buy and don't consider myself qualified to do a review and I know this HMMMMM just kidding I love the videos keep up the good work GOD BLESS YOU
He neglected nothing. He stated the center cross point for the canon 6d is more sensitive than that of the mark iii, and it is... +-3 vs +-2. How many cross points a camera has deals nothing with the sensitivity of said cross points. As for the shooting noise, how do you know he neglected to use the silent burst mode? Maybe he was referring to just the normal shooting mode on both cameras... or perhaps he was referring to the silent shooting mode - on BOTH cameras. That being said, I own a 6d and it is very quiet... smooth too. On my camera, the "silent" mode is only slightly quieter and it does slow the burst rate.

Thanks!
Congratulations Dave ! You have done a really good job !
Nice work Dave! Interesting to see how close the 6D is to the Mark III.
Dave thanks for taking the time to make the video.
It was packed with detail and very very well done.
Regards,
Craig
Really enjoyed your review. My 6D is coming tomorrow! I'm excited to step up to a full frame for portraiture...I don't do video very much, but it was interesting to see how both camera's handled lines.
Incredible job. Thanks for taking the time. i was sold on the 6D, but now i'm thinking of saving my pennies for the 5D3
12:01 Dave You have Moire and aliasing on your right shoulder / shirt ? What Camera Did you use? You can see the patterns better in 1080p not in full screen , try it
wow one of the best reviews i seen well done and thanks
Hi Dave;
Awesome review on 6D and thanks for that.
Many thanks
This video literally made my decision. I was so torn between the two. This is such a great video!
Best review ive ever seen on a product. Thank you!
Fantastic genuine review, great to watch and will keep an eye out for more. Well done

I'm positive if I got the 5D he'd bring it back in a heartbeat and I'd never see the 5D again. lol
That's funny.
Thank you Dave for this wonderful review, my 6D will arrive tomorrow, hope I get to learn more from you. Good job!
Great review!! I have finally decided to buy a DSLR for video and stills, I have been doing a ton of research, and this was super helpful!!
Glad I could help!
6D looks like a pixel better in video quality due to having no AA filter.
But the NO AA filter makes some things look horrible.
Awesome review n_n
And I have the 6d and I just love it. Nothing to complain. I only use the center focus point and rearrange the frame.
all you need is the center focus point anyways... use the one shot mode. I do anyway
Super review. One of the best no nonsense reviews I've had the pleasure to watch.
Well Done.
Great video (again) i will sub, really like your "non-scientific" tests as they are realistic, not 'in the lab' :)
Great review!
I've been searching the best camera for my budged.. for a long time! Specs, sites and reviews. you solved all my questions in under 30 min!
Thx a lot!
very useful video, just sold 6D and going to get the 5D III~
Fantastic review! I have a 6D being shipped to me right now with the 24-105mm kit lens, and this makes me pretty confident that it was a great choice. I do shoot in low light a lot, so the auto-focus sensitivity and high ISO performance is a must. I'll just have to live with the moire until I can save up another grand and a half to upgrade to the Mark III.
And how do you enjoy 6d over these 8 years? have you made videos apart from photos?
Dave I couldn't help to notice that you were filming at Hapa such bar and the flatirons. Do you live in boulder? You look familliar!
Lazy Edit Productions yes! I live close to that mall.
Dave Dugdale which camera would you recommend for a beginner? I have been looking and the 60d and 6d and was wondering which one would be better to start out with.
Lone Mic Productions Damn it sounds like you know what you're doing! I have only shot on Gopros and I got a phantom 2! Thanks for the advice!
Lone Mic Productions Never going to rule out the go pro! It is the perfect compact camera with good quality for half the price of a DSLR, and it being more compact makes it so much easier to carry around as an everyday camera, that if you need it you just take it out! I didn't know they used it on American Horror Story!
Lone Mic Productions Haha you should! I have got 6 go pros and they are doing me pretty well! Sub for Sub?
Thanks for the review Dave. I needed a backup to my Mk III and decided on the 6D. I'm not much into video, for now, and for still photography and travel, the lower cost and lighter body of 6D will come in handy.
I love my Canon 6d. This Fashion Week 2017 in Milan, it was perfect, wifi top.
What did you end up upgrading to?
Thanks!
Great review. Love the relaxed, clear, calm and concise way you talk. No wonder you're giving courses :)
Dave - your reviews are awesome... thank you for taking the time to create this review - it was very enjoyable to watch...even the scenery you're shooting is great... I'm definitely a fan Dave.. keep up the great work - Bless ya
Excellent review which concentrates on useability and IQ instead of meaningless specs. Really need to check the savings for a 6D now though .
You have a new subscriber also. ;)
Call me crazy but I like the colors in the 6D a little more.
me to .. I think 6D more sharp
+1 to Alexander. APS-C and 35MM are two different formats, just as medium format and large formats are different. On my TLR, 50MM is wide-angled, on my 35MM film camera it's standard and on my 60D it is telephoto.
Good job as usual Dave. Your honesty shines through.
Dave, in terms of aealising and moire, the 6D is better then the T2i, T3i (...), right???
Thank you!!!
Great review Dave! Oh and you forgot about the silent shutter mode on the 5d Mark III. It does lower the FPS but the noise reduction is awesome.
every thing described is good, but never shown low light still photography differences and color corrections. i have both camera's now, i am a indian wedding photographer but not satisfied with 6d in tungsten light video which never gives that result what shows on lcd. kindly give your guidance and difference in tungsten lighting between both camera. i have 24x105 L4 lens with both cameras and having also a 17x40mm L4 lens.day light photography is better in both.
One of the most important criteria for me would be the cost. Does 5DIII deserve extra money?
Great review Dave!
thanks for the great review .i would like to know does the 6D has the elizing problem at stills or at videos only .because I am seriously looking to buy one of those. I am not a sports photographer. please let me know am waiting. thanks.
For its price point, I'll go with the 6D
Great production Dave! Very thorough. Good to know about all the aliasing/moire.
