You know what the apple peeler is great for? PIES. Peel and spiral, and then just cut in half and you have perfect slices for putting into a pie. Also works good on potato for gratan or a layered dish! I always want to try an onion on it, but I never have an onion when I am using this... OH MAN DO A VIDEO WHERE YOU SLICE/PEEL ALL OF THE ROUGHLY APPLE SIZED/SHAPED FRUIT AND VEG!
We still have my grandmother’s original machine from the 60s that does the same thing and looks exactly the same it’s never been sharpened or repaired and it works just the same as it did when it was brand new
My folks used to make gallons and gallons of apple cider in an old press, from my grandparent's old apple trees. (100+ gallons). There were always apples left over and my mom would use one of those apple peeler/corer/slicers to make 30-40 apple crisps and give them to friends and family, as well as cinnamon candied apples. They are handy for bulk apple processing.
During a tour of a living history farm out in Indiana, I was the only person in the crowd who could correctly identify the one they had on display in the kitchen.
When I was a little kid I came up with the idea of making a contraption to crack eggs and it looks so similar to the one I drew. It makes me so sad to see someone beat me to it. (No pun intended)
Apple slicer peeler corer design been around since 1800's, my sons would fire the cores in to sink at thanksgiving when making pies. Love it, couldn't be without it. Great video
That damn queen cutout is always staring right into my soul and I'm starting to question who I've become. It's like. She's being kind but is thinking. "Look at this fucking guy"
its important to remember that lil gadgets like these are incredibly helpful to people who may not have perfect motor skills (it takes quite a bit of dexterity to do things like peel an apple or hull a strawberry) or people with arthritis affecting the range of movement in your hands and fingers (If you have limited motion in your hands and fingers, twirling a fork to eat pasta gets really difficult.)
The apple peeler is useful even for people who have perfectly fine motor skills - if you need to peel, core, and slice 6 apples for a pie, you can either spend half an hour doing it with a knife or a minute and a half doing it with that tool.
Ours had a razor blade on it right where you pulled the apple off. Guess who bled all over the cut apples, the kitchen, the carpet, and the bathroom. lol
Great video, Barry! Ever since me and my mother started watching your channel we started cooking some of the things you made together and it really re-united us! Keep up the great work :)
I’ve been watching you every night for the past two weeks and it’s been so comforting. I absolutely love your channel and I think your family is beautiful. 🥺
many people ask "what useless tools" etc but keep in mind that most of these are actually essential for people with missing limbs, hands, digits or also for people that deal with parkinsons and similar things
***** I agree when it comes to these particular ones shown in the video. Many of them (certanly not all) are the product of the original idea so it can be sold to people without disabilitys to get more money, which is sadly what most companies try to do. of course are some apparently inspired vice versa At least thats what my neighbor told me (she lost her left arm in a bad car accident when she was really young) and has very similar items design- and usevise like the ones shown basically since she lives alone. And i heard about this utensil you can click in a fork/spoon at the top and it stabilizes the whole thing (like a chickens head) amazing for people with tremors or parkinsons
@@DragoDerRebellXD I really, really wished I had one of those stabilizers when I was trying to learn to use my hands again after a stroke and they made me try to eat yogurt. Most of it ended up on my shirt and never made it to my mouth, until I finally broke down crying and insisted on something I could stab with a fork. (Which they wouldn't give me because they didn't want me to eat solids yet, so they had to feed me.)
that's how I learned to scramble eggs growing up is by shaking them. except we used Mason jars or some people call them canning jars. no leaks and you can throw the jar in a pot of boiling water for about 15 minutes to cook it with all of your ingredients. Great for camping when you don't have a pan
i have fitted the Delorean with this big pole and oreo dipper! according to the flyer at exactly 10:04 pm this Saturday night lightning will stike the clocktower electrifying the cable right as the oreo dipper connects
Barry, for the stuffed ball maker you did a couple things wrong for it. First of all you overfilled it, you should put just a small bit less in each so that there's no overflow when the indent is made and the meat isn't compressed as much. Second the meatballs should be meat mixed with a binder like egg so it sticks together with less pressure (as well as whatever else is in your recipe.) And third it should probably be oiled or given a spritz of cooking spray so they release easy, as plastic isn't exactly nonstick. The devil oven pull is just a cute version of a tool I've seen Julia Child use - the horns are meant to be a tab for pushing the rack back in, and the whole thing is not for removing the whole pan but rather getting it just out enough so you can see whether your food is done or not, poke and prod it to test it, and/or remove the tray without having to reach all the way in. I might have to get someone I know that corer/peeler as a gift!
Especially when they replace knives and fingers and teach children horrible table manners! That said, the apple coring device saves huge amounts of time if you're doing a large batch.
This gadgets were designed for the purpose of helping disabled people in the first place. They were later introduced to the public as one tasker dumb gadgets.
That apple peeler/corer was a definite blast from the past for me! I grew up using one that was passed down from my grandmother to my mom and to us. Such an amazing piece of machinery from so long ago, still shocking people today! And made to last forever! ;) Love your kitchen gadget testing!
I think the self spinning fork was designed for people with disabilities, like thats what a suprising amount of those 'as seen on tv' devices are originally intended for.
That gadget was eggtraordinary, it wasnt quite eggsact, but you didn't end up with egg on your face, but it was a good eggsample of a gadget, and the video was a great break from my eggsam revision, Cheers Barry eggcellent video
The strawberry hulling tool is actually a really useful thing to have, especially if you pick and freeze your own berries or are making a fruit tray. I bought my mom one as a bit of a joke for a christmas stocking one year because Canadian Living magazine made a big must have tool fuss out of it, and it was so useful I went out and bought myself one too.
That stem gem is also useful if you do nail stamping - it can hold cotton so you can clean the plate without possibly messing up your nails. Mom has had a thing like the devil pull for years, except hers is wood.
The apple peeler "thingy" was invented and used often in the 1800's in the united states. We had one growing up because my mother loved all that antiquey looking stuff, but it worked awesome! Its been about 30 yrs and I think she still has it. It holds up well!
sleepy y y never heard of "necessity drives invention"? Not everyone who uses gadgets are lazy, i work with people with disabilities and we use a lot of gadgets in the kitchen to help them accomplish tasks they ordinarily couldn't do
I wanted to let you know I accidentally came by your videos one day and have been stuck on them ever since but this video in particular brings up some amazing memories for me. This Apple peeler slicer thing is just like my grandmother anf mothers original one that has been handed down generation after generation originally made in 1919. I'll have to take a picture of it and share. But the only differences are no color choice and it clamps to the side of the counter instead of modern day suction cup. Love this gadget and have used it for every Apple pie for generations in my family.
Completely agree with the apple peeler, we've got an orchard and making apple sauce from 50 pounds of apples, it's a blessing. As for the meatball former, I'd say it's easier to flatten a lump of mince, put on some stuffing and roll them by hand... Same goes with mash (or dumpling dough). Again, very entertaining series. Thank you!
Omg. Watching your egg fly onto the floor while trying to use the EZCracker. I couldn't stop laughing. My husband was asleep beside me and nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard me. Lol. I also have the apple peeler/slicer. We love it, and it makes a quick job of preparing apples for pies or tarts.
I've got that apple peeler, slicer, corer gadget and it's amazing. It makes the younger ones want to eat the apple more as they're more excited with it being sliced like that for some reason. Same colour, too!
OH MY WORD!!! when that egg went flying across the kitchen and then you just heard it crack was the funniest thing ever!! Good luck cleaning that up without slipping!!😂😂😂
My mom has had an apple corer, peeler, slicer for almost 2 decades and uses it every time she makes her award winning apple pie. ☺️ Some of my fondest memories growing up are helping her in the kitchen and using that tool.
The apple peeler/slicer/corer is actually pretty old - it's been around for longer than even my dad can remember. So at least fifty years. I've never seen one with a suction cup though - always a clamp. they're not much heard of outside of the countryside though, in my experience. I love them.
My grandmother had an apple peeler/slicer/corer just like that when I was a kid (the old style was attached to the edge of the table with a vise-like apparatus, not a suction cup though). Now I have one. It is not a new device but it works great and is very sturdy!
I just started watching your videos and I really like them. and I just wanted to say for anyone out there that doesn't want to buy the plastic egg scrambler an empty jar works just fine
The stem gem is great a product. I have several of those and I love it. The apple pealer has been around for long time though. I think my grandma had one in the 90s.
Acouple of these gadgets reminds me of my grandparents. My grandfather used to dunk his cookies in coffee to soften them a bit to make them easier to eat (he didn't have any teeth) and the strawberry thing reminds me of when my grandmother would make jam. She used to just use a paring knife, though. Accomplished the same.
I love when I watch these gadget videos and I recognize things that are in my kitchen... This episode: the apple peeler/corer and the devil rack puller haha
the stuffed ball maker I've used before, they never work right but I found that if you grease the cups first it keeps the meat from sticking but you also need to add an egg to the meat so the ball halves will stick together better at the seam. the commercials never tell you how hard it is to use it lol.
Hey Barry, you remind me of my hubby. I think it's great how things can get messed up i.e egg on the floor and you dont stop the video, you just carry on. Awesome
oh, i love the apple peeler, corer, slicer! ine of my favorite tools for the fall to make pies, cider, crisp and more (works with potatos too! you can tak the corer off!) you can also take the peeler off too!
I had one of those apple peelers as a kid but those actually clamped onto the counter like a bench vise. Did the same thing though, peeled cored and spiraled. Wish I still had it, was great for making pies saved so much time!
Down on the V&A waterfront in Cape Town there's a stall that uses a device similar to the peeler/corer to make helically sliced potatoes along a skewer. They're then deep fried, dusted with flavouring salt and eaten directly off the skewer. Mmm, freshly-made crisps. Bloody delicious.
When I was a kid, we had an apple coring-peeling thingy. It was made by Pampered Chef and even when it got old, it still worked like a charm. I can't remember why we got rid of it, as my mum still likes baking apple pies every once in awhile.
I remember they had those funky apple corers at my primary school canteen growing up. It was a no charge thing to just bring your apple up to the canteen and get it peeled. Or you could buy an apple at the canteen to get it peeled.
My dad has a potato peeler that is kind of similar to the apple one, it just doesn't cut/core it. We call it the rotato
+QueenKaito amazing
rotato, that is brilliant
Update: i looked it up and it is actually called a rotato. It's a good investment if anyone's interested. Works every time
+VioL0Lator No one cares a classic roast.......if your in the 1st grade.
+Jessica Arellano hmm, reminds him of the kids he takes from the park
You know what the apple peeler is great for? PIES. Peel and spiral, and then just cut in half and you have perfect slices for putting into a pie.

the spinny fork would be really useful if you have Parkinson's or Huntington's disease, actually
Possibly good for folks with arthritis or tendon problems too.
Ive heard a lot of products like this are actually made with that in mind. They dont advertise them as such because its a small market.
Yep. I have joint problems in my hands, so I'm making a wishlist of some of the items Barry's reviewed.
My folks used to make gallons and gallons of apple cider in an old press, from my grandparent's old apple trees. (100+ gallons). +Sherio88 My friend had one, worked great if you have to do bulk.
During a tour of a living history farm out in Indiana, I was the only person in the crowd who could correctly identify the one they had on display in the kitchen.
the egg thing seems like it would work if the build quality was a lot better.
StringStorm add a rubber band on the rings that holds the egg so that it doesn't move around so m much
The apple peeler looks awesome, I would eat so many more apples if I had one of them and it's fun to do
+truemetalsonic ditto!
Or you could just like you know eat it without peeling, coreimg and slicing it
you also can use that to peel potatoes. and deepfrie those swirly things.
Same
+truemetalsonic It actually looks like a torture device to me.
When I was a little kid I came up with the idea of making a contraption to crack eggs and it looks so similar to the one I drew. It makes me so sad to see someone beat me to it. (No pun intended)

A fork works as good to dunk Oreos. Just stick the fork in the cream
Chopsticks aswell
Or use the spinning fork. Style.👍
Enthusiast HQ no it would just break the Oreo cookies and drop it in the thing if it was spinning but I'd perfer using the gadget
I don't know why but I enjoy these videos
same 😆
I've never heard someone describe an Oreo of any kind as "tender".
Couldn't help but laugh when the egg flew off.

Michelle Warren same lol

Michelle Warren no more eggcellent jokes
Apple peeler/corer/slicers are quite an old gadget. I inherited one from my gran that's from the 60s!
+Christina Maki I see them at antique shops a lot. I need to get one. They look like so much fun.
My grandmother had an ancient battered one that she got in the 20s or 30s.
Great video, Barry!

I love how he just throws the boxes. Like "yeah that's not important" *toss*
The meatball thing is better made out of steel. I bet it breaks down if applied to much force.
so cute!!! I love how you crack up at the silliness of the products. Fun to watch!

+Max B uts a quote from Back to the Future because he made the reference
That apple peeler is pretty cool - just the coring bit is fab but the springy apple makes it a winner!
oh my god I can listen to your voice for days....
One word, British.
Ejje Well yeah that's a huge plus, but besides that, I love the way he talks.

By far.... the funniest kitchen gadget review by Barry. More than the silly gadgets, I was laughing away at Barry's comments and expressions.
Always a great video. However, single use kitchen gadgets are a waste of money.

ya
yeah I saw it. (btw just saying it's not a bobble head.)
My mom and I use the apple device every fall for apple pies and crisps!!! Love it
The fruit peeler's the winner. Definitely. All the others are just useless.
Every time I see those oreo dunkers, I wonder why people just don't learn how to use chopsticks instead.
Or stick a fork in it.
Abigayle Geisel But chopsticks are more useful than forks in everyday life.
ilovesparky13 I do love to use chopsticks though.
ha I use chopsticks. Chopsticks are good for everything lol
ilovesparky13 shut up weeb chopsticks are inferior in every way. its easier to pick up food with forks than shitsticks
I laughed my ass off Barry, great video, thanks for saving all of us the heartbreak of evil gadgets !
I do like me some tender oreo
mmm :)
My grandmother had one of those apple peeler things. I remember it working, well, just as good as you showed!

Can it peel potatoes

I've had that same apple machine in green for almost 10yrs. Great for doing bushels of apples and pears
Damn I need that Apple slicer!
I've had the apple thing for like 3 years now it's amazing

I had that apple core remover. I loved it! I had to get rid of it because I found it difficult to clean and I hardly used it
I couldn't stop laughing when Barry tried to crack the egg the second time and it went flying across the room. LOL
I remember they had those funky apple corers at my primary school canteen growing up. It was a no charge thing to just bring your apple up to the canteen and get it peeled. Or you could buy an apple at the canteen to get it peeled.
The genuine gasp of amazement at that apple corer. You make me laugh. lol
OMG the apple slinky!!!!!! WE use to have them at primary school and everyone would line up to get their apples slinkyed hahha
Today I had a ruth day so I put on this and it gave me smile
My family has had one of those apple peelers for most of my life. Best things ever
I love it when someone reviews a kitchen gadget! Nice vid
