    My theory is that sombra hacks her own kit to somehow make it broken again everytime she gets a rework

    My problem is that sombra allows you to get free setups on heroes and thered absolutely NO downside to just sit behind the enemy team and wait for your own tean to engage and delete someone. Its really frustrating as the game turns into shoot the air just to spy check sombra because she can be anywhere and there's absolutely no counterplay to it.

      as a sombra main ( a new one with only like 20 hours) i think the issiue is that people play her like a dive or flank while she gets way more value and is less annoying when playing like a poke hero, what you are describing is rat gameplay and its probobly the biggest issiue with sombra. they could either make her more poke focused or make her kit more advanced so its way harder to play her, that would drag the pick rate down and those who play her will play her the right way.

      @@davidfarnstrom7241ur just straight up wrong all dive characters are dive characters because they have utility that can get then in the backline fast and get them out quick.Sombra does low damage from mid-far and is best close as not a poke character

    Making Stealth infinite and than later a passive ability was such a huge mistake. No character should have permanent stealth in an online shooter.

      @@Monarch280 Blizzard has not learned a single lesson from OW1. It has and will always be a balancing nightmare because Overwatch is fundamentally flawed at its core. It's a game that's constantly reinventing itself, always reacting without any clear direction.
      Brigitte, Rolelock, Sigma, 5v5, etc. New characters and balance challenges are made to address problems only to create whole new ones. I legit think Overwatch is impossible to save because its foundation is so fragile.

      @@Monarch280 Even TF2 wasn't as egerious. The Cloak and Dagger is limited by movement, requiring Spy to stand still for it to recharge or drop cloak to pick up an ammo pack. Nor did he ever have an instant teleport to anywhere on the map.

    As a Sombra Main, I believe that with this most recent rework the complaints against her are valid.
    Her previous Overwatch 2 design was the best design they have ever had for her. It maintained the unique play styles and high skill expression of her original kit, while reducing the frustrations of playing against her as much as possible.
    This newest rework leans into all of the frustrating parts of her kit while removing all of the unique and skill expressive aspects.

      I don’t entirely agree. I do think that the complaints against her now are valid, but I don’t think her new design is purely bad. I also don’t think ow2.0 sombra was great, although the trade off on hack between lockout and damage was decent.
      I honestly wonder if OG sombra (with buffs) would actually have been her best form with the non infinite stealth, but I can’t really say for sure

      Seriously I haven’t been playing ranked cause I hate her so much. Playing against her just tilts me in an unhealthy way and I’d rather not put myself through that. Hope they rework her again or give her a canonical death.

      Yep, early Overwatch "2" Sombra was able to use hack and invisibility as always, but she disabled abilities for like 1 second, it was possible to time her hacks and counter (as it should be, skill >> everything). Now the hacking became random again, it disables for longer periods of time, super easy to hit the virus projectile, etc.. it's a shame, I do think Sombra is a cool character, talking about the aesthetics and theme, I know how to play with her and I had fun... but really, it's impossible to balance, invisibility doesn't belong in this genre. Maybe if it's purely defensive, like what Marvel Rivals did with Loki, a big MAYBE, that can work, barely

      @@-.Outlaw.- I would say before the permanent invisibility, Sombra required some level of skill. Like middle of the road, not sweaty like Doomfist, neither braindead like Junkrat. But the perma invisibility made her braindead, no question, hack used to be the strongest ability in the whole game by just holding one button + auto-aim. Nowadays imo "suzu" is the strongest and I've seen Kiriko players justifying this insanity by mentioning they need to "predict" things before using suzu lol Blizzard is rewarding low skill since day 1 really, it became a snowball with time

    for the love of god a character that can be permanently invisible, can turn peoples abilities off, do decent damage with relative ease, teleport every 9 seconds, run fast, reveal people who are hacked through walls, should not exist, pick one

    One of the best changes to make Sombra less obnoxious would be to put her Stealth invisibility on a resource meter.
    - Dramatically reduce detect range.
    - Max invis duration: 10 seconds.
    - Max invis recharge time: 30 seconds.
    - Dealing damage with her SMG gives back a bit of Stealth meter to recharge faster.
    - Can't attack or use abilities unless fully out of invis.
    - Taking damage no longer disables invis. It would still show her glitchy shimmer outline though, as a small temporary ~0.2s reveal.
    With these changes to invis you reduce passive play and encourage more aggressive play, making her more present. You completely remove the annoying hack & run, and make her presence more prominent while also giving her more agency over her own invis.
    Yes, this is Spy TF2 invis; arguably the best most balanced instance of an invisibility mechanic in multiplayer games ever.

      The resource meter thing is also mostly to include more skill expression in her Stealth usage, as it's now a resource to manage rather than a flat cooldown

    A correction to the GOATs meta, she was actually played during that time in niche triple DPS comps, usually with Doomfist and Pharah. It obviously wasn't meta but she was still played more than almost all other DPS at that time.

    I'd honestly want them to try out the Mirror-watch Sombra on live servers, maybe some tweaks to give her more healing capabilities like maybe her Virus can be turned into a skill-shot heal?
    I'd be genuinely curious how much a support Sombra would radically change the game, especially with how she enabled allies with her hack and having essentially a second beat for the team with her ult.

      @@louiekim824 Definitely a few number tweaks have to be done so she doesn't make certain other characters ridiculously busted with her Hack buff, but overall I genuinely think it would breath in new life for the character and make her less toxic to most players.

    I think the Sombra problem can be summarised as permanent invisibility being a terrible idea from a game design perspective.
    People generally focused on her hack to explain why she is 'unsolvable' but when you think about it, it has always been a trade off between between her time to kill and and her opponent's defensive options. Sure it has its decent share of problematic interactions, like the one it has with ball form and Doomfist's and ramatra's block, but that could have easily be patched out by making these abilities "transformations" rather than channeling abilities. But conceptually it would have never caused any balancing issue if it didn't came from nowhere, at literally any time having virtually no counter play. If sombra wasn't perma invis, being able to interupt hack bu shooting at her would actually work as counterplay.
    As for her translocator, Tracer's recall acts in a similar way and makes her as unkillable, and good players have never seriously implied that Tracer had a badly designed kit. Forcing sombra to translocate effectively acts as soft killing her and while Sombra should realistically get the tracer health treatment, with her historically low dps you could generally force her out before she could kill you. Again her relative safety would have never been a problem if she didn't come out of nowhere to burst you down while you were distracted.
    With the 5 second invisibility, a smart player could easily tell that if sombra was out of the fight she was really likely flanking and could raise their awareness in the next 5 seconds, taking positions where it would be harder for sombra and her team to jump you. Sombra could still mix up the timing, but that would always come at the cost of having to stay completely out of the fight, which was not always worth it, and her hiding spots were generally more limited. Her problem back in the day was that her damage was just incredibly low and that her range was so bad that the only way she could contribute to the team fight was by flanking which was unreliable with a second tank, but with her new primary fire having more damage, less spread and her hack being faster, she could now be a much more effective hero throughout the fight and not be forced to permanently be on the flank.
    Long story short, bring back her 2017 kit, keep her primary fire, hack and translocator velocity as it is and lower her health and she will be a much healthier hero (and in my opinion more fun to play).

    She was misunderstood at release as she was a weird support-dps hybrid that needed people to know how to play with .
    Then they made her a pure dps because she was a nightmare in a support place in pro play mostly on 2cp maps That spammed emp.
    Now she is an obnoxious dps that removes some character from the game

    I think the main reason why she is so difficult to balance is how drastically different her performance is on different ranks and in different pools. On console where she can appear behind you and it takes more time to turn around and it’s harder to hit the follow up shots to knock her out of invis, of course she’s gonna be more powerful. But on pc where that don’t as big of an issue she’s more of an annoyance with a very low win rate

    I think they should just rework her into a full utility dps or maybe even a support rather than a flanker duelist that has extra debuffs, if you want a debuffer in your game, you should make that a core in her gameplay.

    One thing I'd change about Sombra is make her invisibility a resource like the spy from tf2. An ability she can toggle on and off at will but there's a bar that goes down.

      There are several different ways of doing it, this one not being a bad option, but either way they really do need to change stealth away from being infinite.

    As someone who both gets annoyed by Sombra occasionally and kinda half-mains Sombra I'll say that she is the example of "Nothing has to nor can be perfect."
    You with have a hero fun to play as but slightly annoying for others, or a hero that no one minds but doesn't wish to play as.
    It's a real shame that her reputation gets dragged down due to the possibility to play Sombra as cheaply and braindead as possible (infinite stealth camping, using the translocator for easy escapes only etc.), because if you handicap yourself from playing that way, she can feel really fun while giving the enemies some respect and chance to actually counterattack (Just don't do this for Pharah players. Fuck Pharah).

      As Sombra has never been 'standardly powered' then I'd say that warrants them being a balance nightmare alone, but that plus the difference between overall power and how people perceive the character shows how impossible it is to balance her. Even OW1 devs said perma-invis was never going to be an ability for a characters in OW, a rule for Sombra which eventually they broke and the effect was as expected.

    i have an idea for reworking her hack: instead of disableing one's evey ability, she disables one, and with another hack disables another, making her less frustrating to play agained, in return, her hack has a lesser cooldown (like 2 seconds) and her passive increases with every level of being hacked. Of course it would have to be tested and tweaked, but i think it would be pretty cool
    and give her the old translocator back >:)

    its almost as if designing a hero to be deliberately toxic and annoying is a bad idea?? who'da thunk it. Fundamentally, she doesn't work in a team game. A good sombra is so oppressive that you need team coordination to take her down, and a bad sombra is utterly ineffectual and nothing more than fuel for enemy ult charge. It sucks for everyone

    One thing that suprises me that a lot of Sombra players hope for return of time-limited Stealth, it's first time I see that mains of some character wants them nerfed. And Blizzard few days ago said that Sombra will have some changes to Stealth, so maybe it's finally time limitation.

      That's actually interesting. I've thought that time-limited stealth would be good but I'm not a Sombra main and have never thought about Sombra mains actually wanting that. I guess they're fed up by the hate towards their character and that time-limited stealth would make her less annoying whilst also not making her significantly worse if you know what you're doing

      @@BPViking I heard it's more about playstyle. Sombra mains want to change how to play this hero. Right now Sombra can still wait forever for opportunity (I often do I myself) while limited Stealth would force Sombra to use it as mobility tool to attack + escape tool. The only issue is that even if time limit is up, then Sombra can just throw translocator and get back into Stealth without consequences.

    10 months into my sombra maining ( after being an only mercy support main since release ) her kit is fun , her damage can be crazy , she can go a full game with 0 death , shes a sub rogue and i love it ❤ my understanding of what her value is , shes the troublemaker that gets the enemy team divided , if your healers keep thier eyes on each other or the dps work together to take her down shes loses all value . but the diffrence between old ow and ow2 is team work, its completly diffrent than before and thats why she thrives in ow2, tanks going for backlines or dps flankig diffrent sides. the issue doesnt lay with sombra , the issue is the games play style has changed and its her playground now

    My take before I watch the video: An invisible hero will always be a nightmare to balance in an FPS, especially a game like overwatch. With how dynamic the game is, no one wants to spend their time throwing pot shots behind them trying to find the sombra. As a tank player, tf do you do when a Sombra constantly hacks you, reveals themself, then TPs away with no punishment? How do you balance an invisible hero with incredible disruption ability, and the ability to freely escape and traverse the map? Who keeps this character in check, who threatens them? The tank, who has to focus on the fight infront of them, the dps, who have to pressure the enemy tank and backline, or the supports, who have to ensure the health of their team?
    Characters like Tracer, Genji, and Venture are healthy assassins, because their dives are telegraphed, and if they mess up, they can easily be punished. Sombra eliminates the telegraphed approach, and appears whenever she wants, and that looming threat is not fun for anyone.

    Every single aspect Sombra has just sucks to play against in all iterations, especially anything that stops you using you're abilites, like you know, the things you play certain characters in the game for. Even OW1 devs said perma-invis was never going to be an ability for a characters in OW, a rule stated early on which eventually they broke and the effect was as expected.

    The only frustrating aspect of Sombra is hack, make it take longer to cast or make it a skill based ability instead of auto lock. The rest of her kit are fine and counterable, the people that whine about stealth/translocator are just big babies

    Rework her into a support! Hope that helps. She’s never been healthy as a Dps and none sombra players would be happy, sucks for sombra mains but it also sucked for doom and Orisa mains when they got reworked and I haven’t heard complaints since when they fist did it.

    Im a support main and I started q'ing for dps too and everytime I get it I always pick Sombra. Its literally so easy to get kills with her its insane. Someone like me, that is trash at aim only has to hit the virus and hit a couple of shots and boom they're dead if none of their team is paying attention.
    She's a ridiculous character if me who can't aim for sht is always performing well with her.

    they should make her a makeshift support again, her issiue in lower ranks is people play her like a flank hero. her hack is fine exept that the ability disable should be removed or only disable movement ability for 0,8 seconds. i do my self main sombra and i think it would fit her kit to punnish dive tanks but not too hard.

    I used to have no problem with sombra. But now that she can kill every character but tanks in less than half a second without any counter play is ridiculous. I literally don’t care if old hack is brought back, at least then if you had good enough aim you still win the 1v1

    What if hack made abilities less usefull, like, it lasts more but instead of blocking abilities it just makes them do half dmg/heal/resistance.
    Or maybe it makes them clunkier, adding a small delay when using or after using.
    It could also hide hud elements like ult charge, cooldowns and outlines.

    She’s such a cool character but she does not belong in the game. Fundamentally what she is will never feel good for everyone, no matter how many numbers they tweak. I think it says something about how flawed her gameplay design when no matter what state she is in she is always the most complained about character. As long as her core is be invisible, and deny/disable there is no saving her. She’s great for keeping widow, ball and doom in check but there has to be a healthier way to achieve the same thing but if not blizzard needs to give up on trying to make an invisible, hacker, assassin work in this game.
    Also she’s a nightmare on console

    The whole point of playing Sombra is to disable people, which isn't fun, which removes the point point of playing QP.

    The new sombra is even more polarized in her reworks because of the nature of 5v5 supports feel absolutely worthless rn because of the missing tank to peel for the supports. The game is generally sad for many heros because of the missing tank. It’s become more fast paced favoring mobile heroes. It gets rid of Ow magic when all characters now getting released has to have a movement ability

    ... I only play pharah (1,800+ hrs) and I do play all the tanx. That's it.
    I wish they could delete mercy. Since beta, pharah has always been undertuned because of mercy.
    .. and I get it. As long as one of my teammates could just go back to spawn and swap to mercy...
    Every lobby I've ever been in is either people bullying me to swap or bullying my healz to go mercy. This new pharah, right now, with the jet dash and having to land to recharge fuel is different, ill admit, but for like 8 years pharah wasn't touched and couldn't possibly be buffed..
    (despite the hitscan dominance---I mean, bap, ashe, sojourn releases... nevermind widow, mccree, soldier, Ana..)
    .. because of mercy.
    ... its like, picture you, on lijang tower (ill never forget this game rest of my life)
    ... you are pharah with Lucio/Moira healz vs...
    ... ana, bap, widow, soldier, and dva...
    .. and you win going 33/9 k/d.

    Sombra is the reason why I'm super scared about invisible characters in Marvel Rivals. It will happen, Loki already can turn invisible (but it's more a escape tool, so it's not obnoxious), Invisible Woman will be a thing because of the Fantastic 4 movie, etc.. so how the hell can you balance this thing? Maybe the third person camera will help with the navigation, you will see the invisible character coming at you (after the invisibility gets disabled, of course), maybe the invisible character is not completely invisible (you can see the silhouette)... or maybe they will introduce specialized characters who can detect invisibility. Honestly, neither of these prospects looks good to me, invisible vs anti-invisible is too niched and it can harm the pacing of the match (this only works in Splinter Cell)... invisibility is cheap regardless of silhouette... so idk man, seems impossible to balance, better to avoid the concept entirely

      Yeah realistically better to just avoid it but many games seem to go to it again and again. At the very least though they should avoid perma invis at all costs because it just feels bad

      @@BPViking Yep, the issue of perma invisibility is how that incentivizes passive gameplay. A really passive Sombra can literally never die. I know that by experience, if you pick targets and be patient, you can always retreat and survive... but the impact on the match is not significant, another reason why people hate Sombra, a passive Sombra is like having one less player on your team. Ever since the recent rework that changed the teleporter, it became slightly easier to kill Sombra, but it's not the ideal solution, there's still a lot of passive Sombras being a dead weight + overly aggressive Sombras being annoying, it's a lose-lose situation. And the exact same happen in Marvel Rivals, passive Loki doesn't contribute (but he never dies), aggressive Loki impacts the game, so it's a flip of the coin every time someone picks Loki

    Every character is annoying if played correctly against a team if they refuse to change and adapt. No matter how much you nerf or rework a character, if the community is too obtuse to want to adapt or too bad a player who won't get bette, then there will always be complaints.

      But what you’re ignoring is that people don’t want to have to adapt, people don’t want to be forced into playing heroes they don’t want to. Some people enjoy Overwatch for playing a load of different heroes and for constantly switching, but many don’t. Most people only want to play a few different heroes, because that’s the nature of a hero shooter, some heroes resonate with people more than others. And when a hero so directly impairs such a large set of heroes, not just is slightly strong against them but can straight up destroy them simply by existing, then it’s bound to be problematic. Sure you can say that it’s the player’s fault for not wanting to play a hero they don’t want to play, but when a single hero has that much power over that many other heroes, it eventually becomes the hero being the problem. Sure every character is annoying if played correctly. But what really matters is how annoying a character is when not played perfectly. And there sombra still excels.

      Yeah people will always complain, but let's not pretend that there aren't heroes that are more low risk high reward than others. i.e. Tracer has to work harder to get kills than Sombra, change my mind.

      That's a good call, make people have to actually aim at the enemy and stay locked in aim to get a successful hack. Lose your aim and your hack stops and has to restart once your aim is back on the enemy.

    I had an idea for a reword for her but I don’t think it’s good tbh.
    I was wondering if she had two charges of the current day translocator but it had a higher cool-down and Immediately went invisible for a short time (like around 5-12 secs). Virus removed and hack could lengthen cool-down of hacked targets abilities while they are hacked. They could also buff her machine guns damage. I also thought virus could only do little damage and have the effect of moira’s necrotic orb from overwatch 2 beta or hack could be removed and virus could function as hack? Idrk I’m not too sure.

      Are you suggesting that they remove stealth and only attach it to translocator? That could be interesting. Also hack somehow being attached to the virus projectile may (or may not) solve some problems

    Sombras had two official reworks so dunno how you got four. The changes they made where she no lingers gets ult charge from health packs and the other changes in that patch can almost be considered a rework but that’s still only 3, nice clickbait

      I also bunched in the time when she got infinite stealth and translocator. I get that it isnt really a rework rather mostly just a big buff, but it changed the way she played so significantly that I decided to include it anyways.

    Its weird to consider a duration change as working difterently.. by that logic i can say most heros abilities all work difterently today, so i actually would say hack is the only part of her kit thats unchanged, as the duration has no impact on how its always been used and why its always been annoying, take for example echo, if a sombra hacks echo, her flight is now onna cool down of 6 seconds, and she falls into bad positioning and probably dies anyway so why would i care if its 5 seconds or .1 second? It interrupted my play and got me killed, same with doomfist, same with reins and even orisas, any hero who pushes in with abilities will find hack to he the worst ability in the game especially movement based ones as its auto aim, and than on the flip side, its a useless ability against the other half of the cast.. so its a feast or famine ability? It takes players agancy away? Its auto aim? And its the one part of her kit thats never been changed? Stop me if im crazy but i think we found our culprit 😂😂
    And imo, i believe hack was healthier at 5 seconds because that made the hack less feast or famine, which helped balance her kit but than people didnt like a hero based around just hacking people because yea its pretty dam boring but when used right it was still ridiculously op, especially when coordinated so the issue in all honesty is probably hack as its way to powerful of an ability at its skill floor so it either needs to take the attention from the rest of her kit like in ow1 or it needs to be a feast or famine ability, all while annoying a rather large subset of the community.
    Invis on the other hand is kust a common shooter trope, yea its permanent invis but the movement heros have no restrictions like lock outs, or long cds or anything like that, the shooter heros dont have recoil, sway or anything like that except soldier and its not even bad, so honestly overwatch is a game about taking playstyles from other games, ramping them up to 11 and letting them all go free inna team oriented environment, and that was so fun but than slowly over time they added more and more free easy denial abilities like hack, like immortality field, like moira and her primary that eas designed specifically for genji, or brig being designed for tracer, or any of these instances of creating things that were meant to counter playstyles easily rather than giving players the playstyles that best let them express themselves.. i mean youre not expressing yourself when you play sombra because you cant shoot the echo out of the air or stop the doomfist, meanwhile i think the sombras that enjoy playing stealthy with invis are expressing themselves and for that reason alone, i believe hack is what should go.

      Yeah hack is probably her biggest issue. However, to address your first point I wouldn't say that there is no real difference between a 1 second and a 5 second hack. Sure, the interrupt is still going to disable echo and stop lucio from wallriding and whatever, but a 5 second hack makes most heroes completely useless for 5 full seconds. If a Rein charges and gets interrupted he can still quickly bring up his shield and maybe escape. But if he can't do anything for 5 seconds he's as good as dead. To be fair though it is annoying either way so you're not entirely wrong.

      @@BPViking yea I touched on that, I said when its 5 seconds I actually think its healthier as it brings sombras value against all heros, rather than a subset of heros which makes its less feast or famine and I believe feast or famine abilities are often problimatic as you cant really balance them well, let alone one with auto aim that takes players agancy away.
      My point was that against the match ups that really mattered in making people hate hack, hack still does its thing, so i would liken the hack change more to a downgrade in power than a full blown rework like all her other abilities got which is my reasoning for why its probably the main issue in her kit, since it's barely been changed while all her other abilities have been changed alot and people still are annoyed by her and I would still say shes the most disliked hero in ow2 history and honestly outside of brig is probably the second most hated hero in ow1 history and I just wonder if you even made hack a skill shot so it's not at its skill floor, would she suddenly be alot less problimatic?

      @@BPViking considering most annoying stuff in the game is fixed by being skillful, like ana sleep dart being a skill shot, tracers entire kit being limited by her hp which allows almost every hero to have good break points against her, widow having low hp and a skill shot to make up for the 1 shot she has still, all these things would be much more problematic if they were full hp or didnt require aim, because unlimited movement is broken, 1 shots are broken and most importantly, cc Is broken so non of these should ever be accessible at a skill floor.

      Yeah that’s true, free cc is almost never good. It’s for example a large part of why brig was so hated in Overwatch 1. I don’t know if making hack a skill shot is definitely the right direction, but it could be an option if blizzard don’t want to change it entirely

      @@BPViking yea that's why I said if they trully wanna stick to their guns with not changing identities, if we could just outright remove her cc, y'know like they said at the launch of ow2 when told us theyd take all the cc out of the dps role yet they leave the most egregious one, that would have been the best time to do it too because they made that statement and everyone cheered it on, so we would have had no reason to question why they were removing sombra identity, doomfist got moved to entirely different role and orisa lost her shield but no one even questions those decisions anymore even tho imo dps doom was much more fun and unique but I can see as a doom main why theyd wanna do that to one of my fav heros but like they didnt take the perfect opportunity lol

      At least widow requires positioning and once you know where she is she is pretty much dead. You try finding a sombra in the back line terrorizing the supports. A character that can just chill and wait until you have no choice but to do something else is ridiculous.

It gets to the point where the game is unplayable because I can never really use any abilities due to sombras hack cooldown being so short. Saying she should be removed was an exaggeration, but I think the hack cool down is way way way too short

I truly believe the best way to make the character better is to and less toxic would be to remove invis completely and nerf her hack while buffing emp and making it like her old hack like you are locked out for 2 to 4 seconds or her regular hack makes your abilities less effective like say instead of stopping pharah flying it needs her damage
