    A little detail I love is when Mulan is facing Shan Yu and reveals that she’s Ping, Shan Yus response isn’t something like ‘you’re a women’ but simply said the solider from the mountain because the Huns had female soldiers so to him it wasn’t strange to see a women fighting like that

      @Joli could very well be that too. I’m just going off of what I know from history which is that the Huns had female soldiers along side the men so it wouldn’t of been a shock to go. As it was to the Chinese army

    A great Disney classic. Mulan is the Disney princess with the highest body count of all other Disney movies combined, I believe.
    I loved at the end, when the Emperor bows to her, and everyone else hurriedly follows suit. When the Emperor bows, EVERYBODY bows.
    When I saw this in the theatre, and Mulan gives her Father the sword of Shan-Yu, the the crest of the Emperor, my friend bursts out, imitating Mulan's Father, "Oh God honey! Please tell me you didn't kill the Emperor!" Kind of killed the moment, but cracked up the whole theatre.

      The Huns were known for having very capable (ie, lethal) female warriors, and they respected them. I think he was just surprised because he'd slashed that soldier with his sword before the avalanche, and was surprised his enemy had survived. A sword wound like that? Even if it missed all the vital organs and you didn't bleed out, infections were a penny a dozen back then; although he was obviously pissed af, he respected her more for having lived.

    The father was a great wise character. He was a bridge between the traditions of old China and Mulan's independence. He shielded Mulan from a lot of her "disappointing interactions" that would normally bring ruin to her if not for his noble standing. But he knew that he might not come back from war and knew that he would then no longer be that shield for Mulan. He was stern with her because of this. If he did go to to war, he would not be a trainee in boot camp due to his veteran status and would probably jump to imperial officer, That might have allowed him to not see battle. But then again traditional Honor dictates that you lead your troops into battle yourself.

    I don't know if anyone else mentioned it, so I apologize if this sounds like a broken record but one of my favorite commonly missed details in this film. The great stone dragon doesn't awake. The ancestor's spirits and mushu didn't have any trouble awakening as they were supposed to so we have no reason to believe the guardians shouldn't awake as expected, as they always had in the past but the great stone dragon didn't. The moment in the rain the night before when Mulan makes the choice to take her father's place she is sitting beneath the great stone dragon's statue. She made the decision under that statue face that danger to protect her family no matter the cost and in that moment MULAN became the family's guardian. She became "the great stone dragon" the family's bravest guardian. The guardian in the story was already awaken in Mulan.

    Nice reaction. Idk if anyone has mentioned it, but when they are singing “A Girl Worth Fighting For” on the road and then discover the burnt out village where the doll came from that Shan Yu had, it is implied the little girl that doll belonged to has been killed by Shan Yu and his soldiers.
    So now they have found a girl worth fighting for.
    Disney loves its underlying deepness and sometimes darkness.
    I would second any requests made calling for a reaction to The Hunchback of Notre Dame and would also request The Sword in the Stone, Alice in Wonderland and The Black Cauldron.

    • @zuzu8043
      @zuzu8043 Год назад +12

      'A Girl Worth Fighting For' also happens to be the last song in the movie.
      Up until here it's a fun movie and the imminent invasion feels like it's just there to keep the plot moving, and to provide a little bit of drama to spice things up. None of the soldier's are quite taking this seriously yet; sure, Mulan wanted to save her father from the draft, and on some level she was aware that he would die if he went to war, but beyond that she's interested in not being caught, and not shaming her family. Her motives are good, but they're entirely self centered. All the other soldiers are more or less in the same boat - they want to get tougher, they want to impress girls, they want to be cool soldiers Shang's easily the most serious of the bunch at first, and even then it's just because training bad soldiers will reflect poorly on him, and important people are paying attention.
      The abrupt ending of the song is the wake up call. The soldiers and the audience get slapped in the face with the realization of what's really at stake here. China is being invaded. Villages are burning, civilians are dying, and this isn't going to stop until the country is conquered or the invaders are defeated. This is a major crisis.
      It's also worth noting that most of the modern Disney Musicals have roughly the same number of songs- except this one. Mulan only has about half as many, because after ‘A Girl Worth Fighting For’ abruptly cuts off there are no more songs sung by the characters. When they arrive at the village, when the true horrors of war are brought into the story not only does it interrupt the song, it stops being a musical- the movie’s whole damn genre changes.
      Mulan is such a good movie for so many reasons, but the abrupt tone shift is such a major reason why. It's an excellent commentary on the reality of war.

    God, I love the Girl Worth Fighting For bit. I like to think when the song abruptly ends to show the burned down village, Mulan finds the actual girl worth fighting for: The poor little girl that had her life taken by the opposing army.

    You should know that normally, Mulan didn't need to cut her hair because, as you saw it, all the men have long hair. In fact, this scene has a symbolic because in Asian culture, cutting your hair means letting your old life behind you.
    I grew up in the french version and I have to admit some lines sound better in french. For example : the grandmother says " I think she become warmer " about the Matchmaker just before she come out on fire.

The live action really forced the notion of her being a woman with her striping of her
    Armour ( which is not practical and pointless) as it didn’t show she cool she was for being an op women they completely messed that up . But in this one they showed us in other ways like her alternative way to get the arrow, how it’s not all about strength but cunning too ,

    I don't know if anybody else has pointed this out, but it's very cool how many times they worked the dragon imagery in to Mulan's transformation into Ping and leaving home. Since the stone dragon guardian crumbled when Mushu went to awaken it, all of that symbolism is meant to communicate that _Mulan herself_ is the embodiment of the dragon spirit that protects the Fa family. And that's just badass.

    One more detail that is pretty minor but I love it: there was a Chinese dynasty where yellow was the imperial color and nobody except the emperor could wear it. The movie is set during this dynasty, and while some characters may wear a yellowish-green color, nobody except the emperor is wearing a true bright yellow.

    About "Disney Songs":
    In classic Disney, the songs never stopped the plot (I saw "never"), but served to move the plot forward and provide something important to the story - and not be something that you could "remove" and retain the progression of the story elements.
    Like the lullaby in Lady & the Tramp, in a scene that shows the family developing - contrasted with almost any song from Aladdin (great animated movie, tho it was). The songs in the story aren't supposed to be "show stoppers", they're supposed to be narrative beats.
    It's difficult, because sometimes the songs are really good, but .... they don't really seem worth the couple/few minutes they take up.
    One of the best examples of a movie reminding us that the songs are diegetic, is when the solders in Mulan sing "A girl worth fighting-" interrupting their effort to boost morale with the cold harshness of war.

    Here’s a hilarious version of the story according to one of the older versions: apparently she was 12 years in the army and nobody realized she was a woman until she finally returned home after the war with her comrades. Only then she changed her hairs and clothes, to the utter astonishment of her comrades. She then basically said that a male rabbit and female rabbit had different characteristics that might distinguish themselves on further inspection, but when they run side by side, who can tell the difference?
    Rather amazing punchline for me but also a moral anecdote that woman and man aren’t so different or fixed in roles after all

    As powerful as the hair cutting scene is, it's a little inaccurate. In the historical period the original tale of Mulan comes from, men had long hair too. Her hair being that short would have actually been odd.
    I always recommend Xiran Jay Zhao's look at this movie, as she looks at the actual historical evidence for it. She did both versions of Mulan and several other things. She's also a great author, so I highly recommend looking at her published works.

    I think the comment in the beginning is one of the reasons i don't like the Life Action Mulan: Mulan never _wants_ to be in the military, neither in the original Ballad, nor in this movie. What she _wants_ at least officially, is to become a wife and mother so she can make her family proud. If this very special situation hadn't coem up, ther is no indicaition that Mulan would not have followed the traditional Path layed out for her by society.
    Now if that is a good or a bad thing is another question. it is clear that she isn't happy with the traditional role and that hr strength lies elswhere (in the original movie) but for her, the option to choose never would have presented itself like that, so she doesn't think about it in those terms.
    It is a very differnet story if you have a girl who tries to defy her family and tradition because she feels that she does not fit in or if you have a girl that cares for her family so deeply that she is willing to lay down her life to protect them.

      I haven’t seen the live action version and have no plans of ever watching it because from what I heard, they took away a huge amount of what made Mulan the incredible character she was. That magical “chi” b.s. they made her born with that just mysteriously turned her into a badass….wtf? Mulan was a badass because she worked hard and fought for it. The filmmakers throwing that out and having it be some magical crap she was born with completely neuters an enormous amount of what made her such an incredible character to look up to. And not having Mushu or grandma in that movie is absurd. Not even mildly tempted to watch it.

    • @northwindkey
      @northwindkey Год назад +1

      @@nattyboh2944 Not having Mushu makes sense from the perspective of wanting it to be more gritty like the OG Ballad. Mushu wasn't part of the original tale...
      Unfortunately trying to be gritty went out the window when they have a LITERAL WITCH WHO CAN TURN INTO A FLOCK OF BATS. What the hell?
      If you want a good gritty, live action Mulan with no Mushu, you watch the badass 2009 Chinese film.

    • @nattyboh2944
      @nattyboh2944 Год назад

      @@northwindkey Okay, so I can get behind that concept. It was really just the cherry on top of reasons why I have no desire to watch the movie, but I take your point. The notion of taking away how hard she had to work to get to where she did is what pissed me off the most.
      But for the rest, if they were actually trying to pursue it with that in mind, then okay, I get it. If it were well done, I could certainly back it. But it doesn’t sound like it was.

    You are right, Shan yu is most likely Mongolian, or another northern nomadic tribe. I have no idea why they call them Huns as the Huns never actually invaded China, and spent the majority of their time fighting the Roman Empire.
    As many people pointed out Shan yu wasn't surprised Mulan was a woman as it wasn't uncommon for the nomadic tribes to have female warriors. In fact, Genghis Khan's own granddaughter Khutulun was a Mongolian general. She was even favored over her 14 brothers to be the heir to her fathers half of the Empire. Her male relatives however didn't let her take the throne, and she died not long after in her early 40s.

    Reallt interesting. When RUclipsrs talk about this movie and what they like most about it, the villain Shanyu isn't often one of them. I agree that Shanyu is an underappreciated Disney villain, even if he doesn't fit the mold of other, more marketable villains.

    Nice reaction, loves yours for Mulan. Liked your one for Beauty and the Beaat too.
    Fyi, other than Mongolian tribes, there are other northern people which traditionally threatened China from the north. Mulan is supposed to be roughly before Genghis Khan in the 1200s. So the Huns are not necessarily mongolians.
    Huns is a general term that even in Europe is used for people who lived in the Steppes with a semi nomadic Lifestyle, and are generally considered warlike and ferocious, feared by the settle city people.
    Also Mulan sadly isnt exactly a proven historical figure, she is kinda semi legendary most likely inspired by a few woman in Chinese history but not confirmed her legend. Kinda like Robin Hood and King Arthur, legendary characters that may or may not have been real
