While I wouldn’t exactly call Tangled an example of Stockholm syndrome, you are right that Beauty and the Beast is not an example either. In fact, Beauty and the Beast could be an example of the opposite, Lima Syndrome, where the captor starts to sympathize with the victim. Stockholm syndrome often ends up being more of a survival tactic called fawning, where people become compliant in order to stay safe

You said "I hope Rapunzel breaks that promise" (the promise to go with Gothel). But if you remember near the beginning Rapunzel said when she makes a promise she never ever breaks it. So it was impossible for her to break that promise without denying her essential character. Eugene/Flynn knew that and that's why he had to cut to hair before she healed him - to save her from having to keep that terrible promise, even if it was at the cost of his own life. (He had no idea her tears might heal him. Neither did she.)

    • @AdamfromFWCI

My theory of why Gothel uses Rapunzel to get up in the tower is to show Gothel that she is still in the tower , Gothel could use those stairs and save some time but having Rapunzel be her "elevator " gives her a sense of purpose and that she has to be there to help her mother up

    • @samuelvincent557
      @samuelvincent557 Год назад +14

Exactly. It's all part of her manipulation and control. It, also, prevents Rapunzel from leaving because, while she can leave, she wouldn't be able to get back up, without, physically, scaling the tower, so it would be a one way trip.
I also love the subtle message that Flynn made, at the end, when he cut her hair off. He did it before she could heal him, showing her that he refused to allow her to be used for her power, not even to save his own life. He put her welfare ahead of his own. A genuine sacrifice.

To answer your question, no, this isn't the "original" Rapunzel story - and thank heavens for that!
In the original, the Baby got taken by the witch because during her pregnancy the mother had an absolute craving for greens, and apparently the dad decided going to the grocery store was just to much hassle, might as well steal some from the garden of our neighbour!
Well turns out, she's a Witch, and she is not amused. She names the girl after the edible Rapunzel Bellflower, which is one of the things the dad stole.
Rapunzel grows up in the tower, the hair grows, just... because, the Witch uses it as a ladder, yadda, yadda
Then the princ comes, he finds Rapunzel and they _definitly_ did more then kiss and hold hands, because she becomes pregnant with _twins_
This is how the witch finds out, she cuts of Rapunzels hair and banishes her into the desert, together with her two infants, then tricks the princ into climbing up the cut hair and when he is at the highest point, she pushes him down and he lands in a thorn bush which saves his life, but sings out his eyes.
Blinded, he wanders the world for years until he stumbles upon the place where rapunzel has made a ho9me for her and her children and he hears her song and finds her. She cries unto his eyes(!) and his blindness is cured, they return to his kingdom, happy ever after!
As you can see, there is definitly inspiration from many of the parts of the original and to be fair, this is one of the tamer Grim fairy tales, no one died and Rapunzel was at least awake and hopefully consenting when they did the devils tango
*cough* sleeping beauty also had twins *cough*

About all this takes from the Rapunzel tale is that Rapunzel is a girl with long hair, kidnapped by Mother Gothel, living in an inaccessible tower, and that a man finds her. But in the story he's the prince, she's a peasant, and there's nothing magical about her hair.
This in my own very top tier of Disney animation, along with Beauty & the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and Pinocchio. And it has one of the best voice casts ever, with Zachary Levi and Donna Murphy being special standouts. Thanks to the writing and Ms. Murphy, Gothel is one of the most hateful Disney villains, precisely because she's so recognizable from real life, a manipulative constantly-belittling mother figure.

Original fairy tales are usually extremely brutal in some fashion. In Cinderella the step-sisters cut their toes and heels off to fit in the shoe. The Little Mermaid... she dies. Etc. This one is no exception. Disney does a really good job keeping the core of the story though. Fairy tales were used to kind of present kids with a right vs wrong "or else look what happens to you" sort of thing.
Tangled was Disney's come back after a 2nd decline (not really but no one actually remembers the film that really started it, Bolt. Watch it, it's actually surprisingly good). Launched their 2nd golden age. Disney invested an insane amount of money to make this movie, $260 million. That's sits in with some of the bigger summer blockbuster film budgets. Disney completely rebuilt their entire rendering datacenter, upgraded everything. Invested heavily in R&D for animation to bring this film to life in a way animation had not been done yet. There's a ton of very cutting edge stuff in this film that no one had done before. They even brought back one of their best animators Glen Keane to head up the project. He animated Ariel in Little Mermaid in the 80s.So if Rapunzel has a feel of Ariel to her mannerisms, that's why. It's an incredibly tightly written script that keeps things moving. Humor fits perfectly and doesn't distract. It's just all around solid.

She's been around Broadway and musical theater pretty much all her life. She's five time Tony award nominee and has won the Tony twice for best actress in a musical. That's why her villain song "Mother Knows Best" is an absolute banger. The woman can sing.

The proof is her hair, they still have it, they can take it with them. When Gothal cut her hair as a baby she left the brown lock in the bassinet so they know what color it turns when cut. Show up with a 75 foot ponytail the same shade as the cut lock that was left and I feel like no further proof is needed. It certainly was enough to convince the castle guards.

  • @KeitieKalopsia

Tangled is very much NOT like the original Rapunzel story, but it does adhere to it in a lot of ways. The original Rapunzel (I'm pretty sure according to the versions that I've heard) was not a princess by birth and her father actually stole the rapunzel plant from the witch next door to cure his ill wife (apparently it looked so delicious that she fell sick for not being able to taste for herself??? idk lol) and the witch took their newborn daughter as payment and raised her in a tower, naming her after the plant that was stolen from her. No, her hair was not magic.
Rapunzel's love interest in the original fairy tale was a prince (thus she becomes a princess by marriage, not birth), and the trap that the witch sets for him is very similar except that her hair has already been cut and Rapunzel has already been moved to a valley far away. When the prince climbs the trick hair to the top of the tower, the witch pushes him off into the thorn bushes below, blinding him. He wanders for a long time until he finds Rapunzel in that valley and her tears cure his blindness just like Rapunzel's tears in the movie resurrected Flynn.

I believe that Flynn and Gothel are to represent 2 types of evil people:
From Flynn to Eugene, to show how bad people can change into good people.
Gothel, to show when evil people are so set in their evil ways, there's no coming back.
