    These were all very good reasons for removing a game from a collection. I'm glad that none of the reasons were, "I really love this but no one around me ever wants to play it." That's the saddest to me (I have a couple like that but can't get rid of them haha)

    • @BoardGameSanctuary

      yes! Thank you so much! A lot of it was just justifying to myself why I needed to part with them. Thanks for joining me in the discussion!

    Great video. Culling games is the hardest yet the most necessary part of board gaming hobby.

    Your reason for getting rid of that’s not a hat is the exact reason I usually decide against buying a game once I see that memory is a bit part of it haha

      Like those surface level "games". Stupid Deaths, for example.

  • @dangerousbeans2907

    The whole point of That’s not a Hat is to be bad at it.
    It never fails to spark laughter and fun in about 5 minutes of gameplay.
    Nearly everyone is bad at that game that’s why it’s so good. 😂

    Agricola is great because precisely because when you win, you know you earned it. The problem with having a bajillion board games is that you can't get to know any of the games beyond the very superficial. Games require many many plays (and im not just talking about 5 plays) before you begin to truely understand the nuances of the game and start to really understand how its systems interact and can begin to form viable strategies. But most people are chasers of the new and dont have the patience required to get to know a game at that level. People who are great at chess have played hundreds and hundreds if not thousands of games of chess. Often times, its the only game they play...ever. Most modern board gamers on the other hand play their games what...a few times a year at most?

      @garylangford6755 4 месяца назад +5

      Agricola is too punishing and long for me. I love hard euros but i couldnt imagine myself doing those 50 plays to see the nuance because each play feels like at work rather than relaxed and having fun

    • @christopherdrogos7963
      @christopherdrogos7963 4 месяца назад +2

      Do all those plays allow you to choose different paths to victory? Generally speaking it seems people play a game that many times to hone a strategy to win consistently. Don’t get me wrong I like to win but I like seeing how the game progresses and can I adapt my strategy to keep up?

    • @jokerES2

      @@christopherdrogos7963Agricola relies on the initial drafting of cards to help determine a strategy. One of the criticisms of the design is that the strategy you're going to play is often decided with that initial set of cards.
      With that being said, there are certainly "patterns" that you can establish a strategy around from the worker placement aspect. But the cards are a huge part of the strategy.

    Good job explaining why certain games aren't for you. I completely agree with Agricola. Great video. Keep up the good work.

    G'day friends!
    I hope your new year is off to a start.
    I am sad to say that it is time for another goodbye board game video.
    These are games that simply don't really have a place in my collection anymore.
    What are your thoughts about the games on this list? Do you feel the same or are you shocked that I'm culling them.
    What games are on the cull list in your collection.
    I would love to hear your stories, ideas and experiences.
    This is a safe place to chat
    Cheers
    Danny :)

    Sadly I could easily make a top 5 games that I love that I can't get anyone else to play. I think those types of games are the hardest to say goodbye too. Because you have that fire to learn and play it, but absolutely no one else is interested. Great list, good reasoning for each. Thanks for the Video!

      @BoardGameSanctuary  3 месяца назад

      You are most welcome. Yes sometimes those sorts of games where you are the only one interested. Its good to see if there is a simple solo mode to play. I often keep those games around hoping one day someone will will actually optimistically want to play it with me :)

    I cannot imagine getting rid of Agricola! But I understand it's not for everyone... I recently got rid of Gloomhaven: Jaw of the Lion, which shocked me. I thought I'd love it because I like the theme, and I love Euros, and the reviews were so good! But it just didn't have a satisfying arc in each game session--to me, at least. It's good to cull! It's giving that game a second life. :D

    Try Agricola again but cut the feeding requirements by half. Releases alot of the stress in the game. You still have to feed your people, but the easy food demands make it easier to accomplish your plans.

    I haven't culled any games yet myself but getting to the stage I will need to. I have games I want to play but nobody else does so it makes it hard to get it to the table. I have not played Agricola yet but it is on my list to try so it was great to get your perspective on it.

  • @Yxvandoolu
    @Yxvandoolu 4 месяца назад +7

    Before getting rid of Agricola, why not check out (if you haven’t) Rahdo’s thoughts on how to play it. Something about getting a number of cards up front at the start, choosing x of them to use to make your plan work. It is an alternative official way to start. If you haven’t tried that, then it might change something for you. But I understand it is a tight game and for all. I have yet to try it.

    • @gadgetgeekgirl

      We always play like this. 7 out of 10 kept of each so no long draft for complete optimisation, but it’s a quicker start.

    I support your decision on Agricola! It’s a great game but not for me either. Really tight and no way to explore. Everyone I’ve played with (and lost to) have a strategy and play that strategy every time. I’m glad people love it but I’m Team Caverna now 😊

    I keep games that I loved but I've grown used to, just so I can introduce them to new gamers. The size matters, so if it takes up very little space, but it's a good game, I'll keep it and look for a bigger game to cull.

    That's not a hat will of course stay in my collection. Can be used in many settings. Needs at least 4 players though. Akropolis is not the best game, but a keeper.

    I played agricola and never felt satisfied with it. the game happens in a small amount of rounds and just as i start to get ramped up at my farm, it’s over. it just made me want to play a longer bigger farmer game where i can actually build it up. (Mythwind farmer character is A+)

    • @BoardGameSanctuary
      @BoardGameSanctuary  3 месяца назад

      This is exactly why Agricola had to leave my collection :( Would you recommend Mythwind?

    • @strangedolll
      @strangedolll 3 месяца назад +1

      @@BoardGameSanctuary honestly i was enchanted with mythwind for the first few seasons as a farmer. but once i figured out how to maximize my money income- i realized the game doesn’t provide anything to spend money on. the general store building doesn’t sell stuff. the items you craft aren’t ever used. so it feels to me like the economy of the game is broken. as long as you only want to play each character for a couple seasons and quit, it’s fine. but if you want to spend dozens of hours in this game- there is really nothing to do

    • @BoardGameSanctuary
      @BoardGameSanctuary  3 месяца назад

      oh that is good to know! I wondered whether the game would sorta end when you had completed everything even though you can technically keep playing forever. Thanks for the review!@@strangedolll

    When getting rid of games I have to remind myself that cardboard has no feelings. It's okay to get rid of them to free up space. Don't get hung up with collecting clutter. Sell/donate/trash what won't get played again. Have no worries, the next great board game adventure is one FLGS visit away.

      ive never sold any- new to the hobby but i can say that I have recently purchased a half dozen games from Board Game Geek market and reddit sub board game exchange. i like buying on that reddit because there is a user verification system after your trade/sale both people comment that they got their end of the deal properly and that adds a flair to the users. then you know that your person is pretty legit.

    Can someone help me with the board games in the intro? In particular, what is the one with the trains?
    Pandemic - ??? (meeples with weapons on cards) - ??? (dice and tokens on cards) - Root - Catan - ??? (Train game) - Everdell - ??? (Train game) - Root - ??? (Train game).
    Intro starts at 0:40
    Thanks!

      I think the train game is Whistle Stop and the tiny meeple one is Tiny Epic Quest. Dice one might be Unearth..
