Love this version - love that the Petty Family - especially Adria - is making this happen for the fans. ❤️. Thank you for keeping your dads musical legacy growing and going. 🫶🏼🤟🏼
I think the final version was more effective but one thing that stands out in both is that the piano really makes the song.
Listening to all these alternative versions. What a treat. Legendary songwriting.
Did you read "Conversations with Tom Petty," by Paul Zollo? The second half of the book is going album-by-album for some behind-the-scenes comments on how they were made. If I remember correctly, they had a heck of a time with this song, just could get it to work. I want to say it was written in waltz time instead of 4/4. They took a break and then came back to try it one more time and that's when it finally clicked for them. I'm glad it did-- I usually pick this as my favorite song if I have to single one out.
@@frigginjerk I haven't read that one. I'll try to pick it up soon. Would love to hear more history of these songs. Thanks for the recommendation.
@@frigginjerk thanks!
I'm obsessed with this version, the driving guitar work and piano are just magic.
Tom's outtakes are better than any current artist's best efforts. Coming from a 30 year old. I love how his breath fades with the last "you" so smoothly.
Best song ever written ❤
This alternate verison of "Crawling back to you" is absolutely beautiful. The drums are mixed beautifully. Even though it's not as soft rock as the studio verison, it still has the same vibe. 💙🎶
This version sounds more genuine. I like it to .✌️..🧚🏻♂️
gotta admit, don't always luv Stan's drumming, but he stomps this...
I can see this version becoming a favorite TP song of mine.
Tyson Fury?
One of my all time favorite tunes.
These alternate versions of what ultimately became the songs on Wildflowers honestly make a lot more sense sound-wise than what ended up being the final album. I love the final album, but this is the first time I've listened to this song and went "Yeah I can definitely see how Tom wrote this write after Into The Great Wide Open. It makes sense." Rick Rubin's crispy production plus the Heartbreakers sound sounds so damn good.
So happy this album is getting the treatment it deserves. I hope Tom would feel honored to see the response it has gotten.
The official album version had more of the melancholy vibe that Petty envisioned. But this earlier take sounds like a really great, more "rocking" live performance of the studio song. And how great to have Stan Lynch "back" with the band in this version. The nostalgia factor in hearing this song and the entire "Finding Wildflowers" album is amazing.
The first time they played it on the final tour was the woodlands tx show. I was prepared for time to move on but that was the surprise change in the set list in the rain on the most important day of my life. It was the first outing with my eldest daughter after a divorce. It somehow affected both of our lives from then until forever. It is emotional, personal and of course, just an example of how a man in pain still can tell a hell of a story that touches everybody in a different specific way, especially someone who is also in pain looking for a miracle to find something to teach, share , bond and subtly explain myself and life's twists and turns to the only person I saw through the rain that night. This version is touching and eerily reminiscent of that night. Thank you everyone involved in getting this released and approved by those who mattered to him as much as my memory of that night.
My All time favorite Artist. Have all his music one form or another
Great to hear a version with Stan Lynch on drums. He plays great here (as always)
This is absolutely my favorite version of this song. Tom Petty was a masterclass of a musician….
True artists can take their music and give it new sounds, slight intonations and emphasis on other instruments. This is why I call TP an artist rather than a musician. Each time he plays his songs he gives it his personal touch.
Incredible version!!! The guitar work on this is superb particularly the intro. Mike Campbell playing his guts out but never stealing away from the song.
I think this version would have scored more radio play, more upbeat and commercial. The original is darker and more brooding. Listening to this I hear some Zevon and Browne.
This same arrangement was the one they were playing during their final tour I can totally hear it.
Absolutely man. I saw them in Tampa on that final tour and this song in particular was an out of body experience for me. Mikes guitar cut through the arena like a knife.
Just superb
What a version of one of my favourite TP songs. Wow.
Tom Petty is in the top 10 all time musicians .
Feels like the first time ... This is amazing....
One word: OTHERWORLDLY!
Thanks for your gifts, Tom...
He's truly ah wildflower
This song and this whole album makes me very emotional that he is gone
*Thanx*
We needed that
Awesome, classic ♥️👍👍
Sounds like an early version of the song with Stan Lynch. The final version with drummer Steve Ferrone is absolute gold.
What a beautiful song from Tom....... Miss him so badly....!!! Hope now, he's learning to fly.... :-)
Lovely it's just so perfect 👌 to here another version the emotions on his voice are soulful and sexy soft and hard to ignore and the guitar 🎸 is amazing it's all bloody great stuff so thanks ❤️ a lot for the songs you are SO special R. Beautiful ❤️
This is just 2 good😁
Im sorry Sarah. I can't anymore.
I wish he could have dine his wildflowers tour like he wanted to
If I am not mistaken Stan Lynch is playing on this track.
Fun alternative cut. The album version better reflects the weariness of the lyrics, though.
You loved, cousin, you loved.

♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
🎆
¿Alguien en Argentina también tiene la versión original de Crawling... como la mejor canción de toda su existencia?
😎👏👏👍❤️🏴
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💘💘💘💕👍
This version reminds me of Dire Straits
I can hear it. It's the Campbell plucking style.
Anybody recognize drum fills?
way too fast!
One of the things I really like about the originally-released version is the way the melody switches between instruments in the non-lyric parts. Like, if I were humming the tune, it'd be switching back and forth from guitar to piano parts. I think that gives it some kind of depth or layered feel, not that I really know what I'm talking about in a technical, audio-engineering sense. This version seems more like a piano song with some guitar parts. Don't get me wrong, I like this version a lot, too. If I were producing the album as it was being made, I'd have a really hard time picking which version to use.
