I had a Jackson Demmelition that had HZ's and I actually thought "holy shit it chugs like Exodus"
I thought I was crazy because I preferred the sound of the passives!

The Emg fills all the space in the room when you hear it carefully. Very FULL sound. I like that super aggressive full sound it's like " get out of my way" type of sound. It has presence and character.
The HZ is cleaner sounding, more dry but, I feel like when I play metal I want a heavy full sound and I get that with emg 81. The low end on the HZ definitely feels nicer but, you can just add more bass on the EMG81 for that.
I give it to the EMG 81.

At times the HZ's actually sounded like they had more 'body' to them. Granted, it's a RUclips video. I'd rather play-test myself, in person, but I'm impressed so far.

Bottom line, any pick up that is sealed and epoxied with a good winding and magnet is great. I can’t believe how great the HZ passives are for lead. But those 81/85 sets chug.

81 has more bite but the HZ has more body. I just ordered a schecter stiletto studio 6 and was worried when I realized the HZ’s are passive but it seems like I won’t be disappointed with my choice after all

Definitely the hzs are a modernish sounding pickup for an emg to me which I liked the sound of. Emgs might have a huge following of people who like more classic metal tones which is why he heard lots of people say they are not that good.

They're both good. In a studio setting like this, the differences are almost negligible but it is there. In a live show setting however, I can imagine the 81 having a more consistent and 'full-on' tone and for playing metal in a live setting, I would go for the 81 no question.

The 81s have a lot more punch to them and are much more focused around the upper mids. The HZ HAs, whilst not bad, do definitely sound muddy and less inspiring (for lack of a better term). Both are good but I think the 81s win here!

Hey it sounds like that h4 really dosent have NEARLY the attack or crispness the 81s does right?...but after buying an h4 i realized that they need to be muuuch closer to the strings than other pickups. You can really get those things to chug. I have mine just below too close and they really came to life. That and if you want certain parts to sound heavier you can really dig into the things and they get even meaner

  • @zzzhuh

The difference between these are minimal. Im sorry, but i just cant say i see the point of having active pickups that need a battery. I owned a guitar with them, and the idea that if you're getting a guitar and installing them, trying to find a place for a battery is just dumb when you honestly cant tell the difference blindfolded. The battery has always confused me, cause its not like the pickup is creating a gain, or anything like that. Passive is superior to me, and i feel like they have more life to them.

Honestly I don’t think I’ll ever go the route of Amp Simulators. No interest on my end at all. It took me a few years and around $8,000-$10,000 on like 30 Microphones to finally settle on the Neumann TLM 107 as my Cabinet Mic. It really does a great job capturing all of the frequencies that I like. It’s hard to do that with IRs. They have a multitude of options but having that experience of handling different mic’s and learning their placements is not something that you can really reproduce in software form. Cheers -Ryan

@@Crypticmaskguitar Yeah, but that's the thing. You spent 10k. It's a great tool for beginners, and for certain circumstances for sure. Would have been nice when I was 12 too have that kind of stuff to learn with. The one big thing is to use it as a stepping stone... Someone who only uses software would be lost in a live situation or in a real studio. Not that those are exactly necessary. But I wouldn't take my car to a mechanic who has only used simulations vs someone who has actual hands on experience just to save a couple of bucks. If that makes sense. Cheers -Ryan
