This documentary, created with the full cooperation of the Cash estate and rich in recently discovered archival materials, brings Cash the man out from behind the legend. Taking the remarkable Folsom Prison recording as a central motif and featuring interviews with family and celebrated collaborators, the film explores the artistic victories, the personal tragedies, the struggles with addiction, and the spiritual pursuits that colored Johnny Cash's life.
The Original Score to the documentary is available now, featuring essential Johnny Cash recordings & original score by Mike McCready incorporating exclusive interview soundbites with Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, and others. JohnnyCash.lnk.to/TheGiftOST

I don’t generally comment on RUclips, but I feel I have to. I think that Johnny Cash is timeless. His voice, with its bold yet humble tone, and later in life a tone of a weathered man, speaks to the downtrodden. Those who feel lost, without direction. His voice, moreso than any lyric or instrument(not to say those are not important) contributes to his unmatched ability to speak to anyone. Truly a legend in music and art in general

My Dad loved his music, so we heard Johnny all of our lives....now, my kids love him too. Iconic soul. His voice is too deep to emulate easily, but no matter which octave you start on, the range is incredibly wide. I always end up stumbling and laughing whenever I try to sing a Johnny Cash song.

I had his San Quentin album on an 8-track that I listened to driving back and forth to college on I-95. When I graduated, he came to the Opera house in Wilmington, Del. We went to see him and later Loretta Lynn. I had always wanted to be a singer, I remember watching JC on the tv at my grandparents house and said to myself, that's exactly what I would love to do. I was a fan of his early music and his later self-published albums. I joined the Navy and listened to him up until his death in '03 when I saw him on the cover of Time magazine in the airport coming back from Iraq. He has always been my personal hero. He seemed to be on a mission to sing about the common man, somehow eclipsing so much that brings other artists down right at the start. He is truly a legend.

I wonder how many of us would put our lives to song, publicly singing what lives in the heart. Johnny Cash's truths pave the way for millions of folks to have a chance to find a kindred spirit in Johnny, reaching that point looking to help make sense of humanity on this road we all walk. Jesus, Love and Forgiveness, opens the way for so much more, priceless, what a beautiful Gift.

I was born in '72, and I grew up listening to Johnny Cash. Even as a child, I could tell that he was so soecial. Even as a child, my 24yo autistic son could tell how great he was. Johnny didn't have a "perfect singing voice", but you could just FEEL the pain in his words. When June passed away, my Mom said "he won't last long without her", and she wasn't wrong. My brother absolutely HATES his rendition of "Hurt", but if you listen to the words, and watch the video, it's like a knife to the heart. To this day, I still tear up sometimes when I watch that video.

There's no need to fear all this time that you won't make it, if you call in the name of Jesus and believe it doesn't matter what you've done, you'll get redemption. And it doesn't matter what the world says, you're saved the minute you believe in Him .

What a gift June was to Johnny. To love him the way she did in spite of his personal problems. To the children who loved their father thou he was not there for them for many years.
Thank you Johnny for being so vulnerable and sharing your struggles with us.
Most importantly, that you loved Jesus Christ and are presently with Him.

I didn't grow up listening to Cash's songs but after watching "Walk The Line" and now watching this, I'm actually grateful he took the advice of his brother, Jack, and his mother to create music. Granted, he took many different paths, with the choices he made, but he always ended up playing instruments and creating meaningful songs. His voice was beautiful. This was a wonderful documentary, many thanks for it.
