@TheArmyPainter hello I have a quick question I love the base he used that requires Black Battleground, I’ve heard you guys unfortunately no longer make some. Is the brown battleground the same as the black version in terms of material and desired effect just add a basecoat to achieve the desired base?
That was exactly what I was searching for ! I looked about how to base miniatures because 90% of my armies are not based and they are not great display minitures. Most of the videos are about colour theory, specific technics for awesome base for an awesome fig, but I just wanted basic ideas to batch paint bases, and that what you gave us. Thank you for that !
Just bought my first board game with minis and this informative (and hilarious) intro to base painting basics and tricks will definitely help me! Thanks a bunch! :D
Incredible video with so many helpful tips. Oddly, the most immediately useful thing for me is going to be your technique for taping cardboard for priming.
Love the content, Phil. Army painter is doing a great job with their products. Just picked up their speed painting starter set and can't wait to try it out.
Love the look of the black stone one for Grey Knights, tho kinda want to stick a gloss varnish over it for black glass. Interesting daemon world concept.
Long time fan of your content, especially anything Dark Angels. I've noticed a huge improvement in your video production quality, great job! I know how much more work it can be, but it is GREATLY appreciated!
Really useful video, thanks. I've been starting to think about how to vary my basing as all my armies have the same gravel just with different colours drybrushed on. Hmmm, seems like TAP have plenty of materials to help there too.
Great video Phil, thank you very much for all of the tips and advice! I just started painting & collecting WH minis back in December, so videos like this are incredibly helpful!
You're the best Phil. Lol. This was great. I couldn't agree more. Even if I rush a model (gasp), and it looks like hot cat poop, my basing game is almost always bang on to make up for it!
A lot of these are light enough that you shouldn't have to worry much with just some super glue on the feet (especially with models with bigger footprints like Space Marines). If you find they have trouble staying connected then a simple pin with a bit of paperclip should do wonders
You could have done "it's all about that base, bout that base, no tenor." Also as someone who hates bases (love me some clear flight stands) still think what you all can do with them is awesome.
Not super long ... It's essentially a thick coat of paint that needs to dry (don't tell Duncan 😏) ... But I have DEFINITELY tried dry brushing too soon (basically the first one each time I do it 😛) so I know the pain of waiting
I usually find just super glue works well enough for most models. Some can be a bit heavier or have smaller "foot" surfaces that come in contact with the base, and for those I will pin them through the base 🙂
It looks like army painter's battle field black battleground is discontinued, do you know an alternative? I really liked your method, but I can't find it anywhere!!
I always thought the pva glue would stick better without a primed base ? I have done it both ways and so far I have not had a problem. However your not the first person to say that so I think il do it your way just to be safe.
You can or you can put the basing material around the feet of the model ... The second option does require you to be a bit more careful with the application and painting and it requires you to maneuver around the model, but it can place your model more in the scene the base creates!
Great basic info again. 😎👍 But I have to give some grounded criticism. You made one bottom tier mistake. If you really want to tickle the rim with your brush, your only OG option is Goblin Green! Or near equivalent of it! That mistake really made this tutorial fall flat...
Why does everyone on RUclips think they need to be funny or gimmicky? Video was great, until he tries to be funny. Just give the tutorial and don't use gimmicks.
Sorry you feel that way. I will say most people who make videos online do so because they want to create something they either enjoy making or that they're proud of making. So any individual quirks or gimmicks you see are probably the creator putting their mark on their creation 🙂
Just a heads up, this video batted around the bush for so long. Super prolonged speech pattern, pointing out the obvious, gonna find another tutorial. Just some constructive criticism, best of luck to ya!
@@TheGlacialGeek you're Fat! Also dude, great content, love the videos, I liked the glacial part watched it a few times. just got some pigments and I'm figuring it out how I can use them in basing and stuff.
@@TheGlacialGeek okay then its weird. unless you have some health condition that prevents you, then losing some weight would be great. you'd feel better aswell, and also im fat too, so dont think im saying this because im better or whatever. Want to be offended, go ahead, but understand that's not my intention.
Probably best to walk around a modern warzone rather than a civilized nations well maintained areas no? Here's a link to all current conflicts raging on planet Earth for you to walk around and take in the scenery, lol - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ongoing_armed_conflicts
Ooh, another tip...after tyour drybrush on the concrete base, you can use Military Shader to give it a mossy, moldy effect.

Love our friends at Shadow's Edge! Cool to see our products combine for some really awesome bases.
The combo of their bases and the Holy White Speedpaint produced some of my favorite bases I have ever had on an army! 😀
That was exactly what I was searching for !

What you said in the opening really blew my mind away. Thank you for this in depth knowledge of our universe. ♥

@5:33 you could ALSO use Warpaints Effects Wet Mud ;)
This is the best basing tutorial on RUclips. Thank you

A great tutorial, I learned alot! Many thanks
Love your stuff Phil, you got a podcast/binge personality/voice. Keep up the good content
Love the content, Phil. Army painter is doing a great job with their products. Just picked up their speed painting starter set and can't wait to try it out.
Really great video. Now I am way more prepared for a bunch of bases to get painted. Thx for sharing your approach.
Love the look of the black stone one for Grey Knights, tho kinda want to stick a gloss varnish over it for black glass. Interesting daemon world concept.
Very nice job, I love all of them
When you went outside and looked at the ground I lost it. Of course you would :)
Thanks for this tuto, and little "hello" from France !
It was so hilarious that step 1. was literally "Touch grass." 😂
what's battlefield snow taste like on cornflakes and how does sugar perform as a basing ingredient?
Long time fan of your content, especially anything Dark Angels. I've noticed a huge improvement in your video production quality, great job! I know how much more work it can be, but it is GREATLY appreciated!

Very helpful, many thanks, I'll be trying these out.

Love it!! This is exactly what I've been looking for 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
this was actually really helpful. I have been having issues with doing a decent base and this gave me some great ideas for a noob.
Hello, great ideas, thanks a lot. Have a good day.
Great video Phil, thank you very much for all of the tips and advice! I just started painting & collecting WH minis back in December, so videos like this are incredibly helpful!
never thought to paint snow to get a good basing material. i always used sand which was inked then painted when i started or use premade bases.
Glad army painter is on board with you. Good work!
Dude i watched this last night did my first one and im so impressed with how it turned out. Thanks 😂 i was dreading it
Glad to be of assistance! 😀
Looks good, thanks!
This was great. Thank you!
Dude, you are amazing. Keep being you, I love it.
You're the best Phil. Lol. This was great. I couldn't agree more. Even if I rush a model (gasp), and it looks like hot cat poop, my basing game is almost always bang on to make up for it!
Great video! I was curious how they make the paste.
Very nice thank you
Finally a video where they teach you how to base nice and simple! Thanks, you saved my day
Glad you liked it!
Nice tips!
This is gold
Great guide bro
Awesome 😎
i love this man
Also, did you cordinate your Vans and shorts to be TAP colours? If so...wow.
I wish I was that good ... It's just a good color scheme 😎
How do you then secure the figure to the base if you do the base first? Pins?
A lot of these are light enough that you shouldn't have to worry much with just some super glue on the feet (especially with models with bigger footprints like Space Marines). If you find they have trouble staying connected then a simple pin with a bit of paperclip should do wonders

I like how step 1 is basically "touch grass" lmao
Hey mate, just wanted to compliment you on the thumbnail, genuinely hilarious!
Thank you 😀
Generally how long does the Battlefield snow/paint mix take to dry? (One super fan itching to dry brush his bases 🙊)
Not super long ... It's essentially a thick coat of paint that needs to dry (don't tell Duncan 😏) ... But I have DEFINITELY tried dry brushing too soon (basically the first one each time I do it 😛) so I know the pain of waiting
How do you go about gluing your model on the base after the whole process? Just superglue? Isn't it too brittle? Great video in any case.
I usually find just super glue works well enough for most models. Some can be a bit heavier or have smaller "foot" surfaces that come in contact with the base, and for those I will pin them through the base 🙂
I dig your new set up. And just so you know I did laugh at your base/bass joke.🙃
I'm glad at least it wasn't just me 😉
No glue necessary?
Jealously watches Phil walk around in shorts on green grass.
It's still frigid and snowing here in Pittsburgh!
It looks like army painter's battle field black battleground is discontinued, do you know an alternative? I really liked your method, but I can't find it anywhere!!
I’ll just do a resin base😂 add foliage and paint and sealer.
I always thought the pva glue would stick better without a primed base ? I have done it both ways and so far I have not had a problem. However your not the first person to say that so I think il do it your way just to be safe.
Great video! You sound like Joe Rogan!
Old ass video and might not get a reply but should i do my bases before putting the model on it?
You can or you can put the basing material around the feet of the model ... The second option does require you to be a bit more careful with the application and painting and it requires you to maneuver around the model, but it can place your model more in the scene the base creates!
99.9% have this... Actually in my army around 80% don't have it, that's why I'm here 😅
When I apply dark tone it dries glossy :(
You need to make sure you shake the ever living bajeezus out of the bottle ... That usually happens when it isn't shaken enough
@@TheGlacialGeek oki thanks I’ll give it a go :)
MY MAN SAID "STEP ONE: TOUCH GRASS"
What the sh!t? Was that green grass?? Outside here, it's a winter wonderland. Where are you, Australia?!
Welcome to Georgia (the state, not the country 😉) where winter is a distant thing that is rumored to exist in some places 😉

oof that pile of shame in the back heh
I like to call it my Pile of Potential 😉

Weird thing to say to another human being that you don't know personally ...
@@TheGlacialGeek you're Fat! Also dude, great content, love the videos, I liked the glacial part watched it a few times. just got some pigments and I'm figuring it out how I can use them in basing and stuff.

Not sure what your intention was other than casual cruelty ... Don't really care either ... Just perhaps don't do it to others in the future.
