As a drummer for dancers... this is one of the best videos for a beginner! I had previous instruction but I didn’t stay with it.
Why would I want to keep playing zills....that’s for the dancer! Wrong! If I want to expand my sound pallet, expand my skills, become a better musician, I need to keep an open mind and learn. I appreciate the instruction.

Very nice presentation of placement and good explanation of the various methods of sounds not making one more “correct “than the other.

Oh yes! My metronome is indispensable for working on my Zills! It’s great for making sure I keep the rhythm steady.

Random question, what size and note are ðe zills you’re playing? (I’m guessing a D7 note) And do you know ðe size and note of ðe ones on Eternal Flame by ðe Bangles? I don’t believe it was a real zil but it definitely emulates ðe sound on ðe track.
Beautiful teaching btw I want to explore ðe sounds and try and find a way of using multiple notes and beats

I'm writing a book and am working on a scene that has a dancer using finger cymbals with a lyre harp and a lute accompaniment. But not sure how to describe what is going on. I can see it in my mind. Just not sure how to describe it.

Thank you for this very thorough primer! I'm a percussionist for orchestras but I also love dance so I have tried to specialize in those dance-percussion disciplines my tuxedo-clad colleagues don't want to study. I've been the castanet playing girl for awhile now and finally came across a written part for zills so I volunteered to pick up a pair and learn how to play authentically.
I noticed that when I do the basic tone, my thumbs want to participate in the closing action instead of staying still while the middle finger brings the top zill down to meet it. Is this a bad habit that will lead to repetitive strain injury, or just a matter of different physiology? So far I'm not sure if I'm getting more uncomfortable tension from moving the thumb, or more tension from trying to prevent that thumb from moving.

Outstanding! I’m not sure about the physiology since I haven’t seen you playing your zills. As you get into faster zill playing the thumb will also want to participate. Happy zilling!!
