Phenomenology: A Crash Course on Selecting the Right Phenomenological Approach

The course introduces basic concepts of phenomenology and explains how researchers can use different strategies to collect rich data, analyze it, and use the information to address their research questions. The course covers the two main types of phenomenology - transcendental and interpretative. Transcendental phenomenology was introduced by German philosopher Husserl, who believed that experience happens when the subject directs their attention to the object and the object reveals its nature to the subject. The goal of phenomenology is to attain the essence of the experience or the underlying meaning of the experience. This course teaches how to construct the purpose of the study, research questions, and data collection and analysis strategies using phenomenological approaches.

You're welcome! You could but it will be challenging since they are informed by different methodological assumptions. So, I suggest you choose one.

Dr. Adu, great lecture. Studying Black male Elementary principals, And their work/experience with black male elementary students, which type of phenomenological study would you recommend? I was thinking TP but I don’t know if it would be useful since I don’t want triangulation with other genders. I want to understand the black male experience with black male students.

Thank you!! If you plan to understand their experience then it is more of a phenomenological approach informed by interpretative phenomenology.

You're welcome Cynthia! Thank you for watching my video and buying out book. Yes, you could collect both interview and focus group data under TP. The most important is to give participants the change to describe their experience. The key focus of TP is to capture what participants have experience which are descriptive narratives of their experience. Therefore, the appropriate data analysis strategy is description-focused coding.

You can still conduct literature review irrespective of the qualitative approach one chooses. When using IPA, you could practice bracketing - which involves setting aside your beliefs, preconceptions and expectations.
