- In this video, I provide an overview of NVivo, a qualitative data analysis software, and how to use it for your research projects. I explain the process of qualitative analysis, including data reduction, coding, sorting, and developing themes. I also cover different coding strategies and how to choose the appropriate one for your study.
For those new to qualitative analysis, I recommend my book, "A Step-by-Step Guide to Qualitative Data Coding," (bit.ly/qualita...) which provides a detailed guide on identifying significant information from the data, categorizing codes, and developing themes to address research questions.#nvivo

Hello Dr Philip, am using Nvivo to analyses my data for my research work. I have two questions to ask. 1) MY first question is with my research, I have only one research question and four objectives. Should I add the objectives to the research questions when coding? 2. My second question is, when coding, do i need to add all my participants responds to the same codes I have created?
You could add the objectives, if you want to use the data to directly address them. In this care you will have a container for the research question and containers for the 4 objectives.
Lastly, yes, you code all the data to the same codes created.
Thank you for the clarification
This is such a helpful tutorial! Thank you!! :)
You're so welcome! I'm glad it was helpful to you!
Dr Adu, words fail me to express my appreciation for this video. The most amazing gesture was for you to respond to my email within an hour giving me very useful information… THANK YOU SO MUCH, MAY GOD BLESS YOU.

Thank you so much! I have 3 focus groups that I need to code and theme separately before looking at them together. How do I do this in NVivo? I already created a case for Group 1 and coded it... now do I just import focug group 2 transcript into a new case? Can you separate it out? Thank you!
You're welcome! Yes, you can import the focus group 2 into NVivo and create a new case for it and do the same thing for focus group 3. To code each group separately, you could first create a container (parent code) for each group. Under each container, you create container(s) for your research questions. You then create codes/themes under each of the research question based on what you extract from the transcript.
Here is how the coding structure would look like:
Group 1
Research Question 1
Code/theme 1
Code/theme 2
Code/theme 3
Code/theme 4
Research Question 2
Code/theme 1
Code/theme 4

Very helpful! I am wondering if there is a way to import codes/themes into Nvivo from excel or if you can only export to excel?
If you put each code/theme in each column in Excel and the rows contain relevant excerpts extracted from the data, you can import it.
Thank you, sir, for such a presentation, but when it comes to creating a label, must it be for your research question only, or can it be used for your objectives, since the objectives are steps to achieving your Aim, which directly answers your research question?
You're welcome!! Based on best practices, developing codes and themes to directly address your research questions is the best approach. However, you could use the objectives.
Thank you, sir. I still have one question. I have my recordings from my participants, but when I try to transcribe them with Otter AI, there are a lot of errors which might be due to network issues or poor language structure or maybe the mic not picking up the words clearly, and correcting them is time-consuming. I have tried using other tools to transcribe my recording, but it still gives me the same issue. Can I rather use the recording in NVIVO, or is it compulsory that I transcribe my recording into text? @@drphilipadu
thank you for lan excellentlecture!!
Thank you 😊
thank you
You're welcome!!
Thanks for the clear explanation, however, my teachers often refer to coding being an iterative process, how do you incorporate this into the analysis?
Brilliant - thanks Philip! Can I ask whether there is a way of merging 2 files (I know how to do this with nodes)? Thanks :)
Thank you! I haven't personally merge to files but I assume that it will show a list of both old and imported files.
So helpful!!!
Thank you 😊
Thank you so much, Dr., for your lecture on the software utility. Can you share your experience regarding the access to Nvivo14 software installation in full version?
You're welcome! They have different versions depending on your needs. If you are student, they have a student version which is about $118 (see: lumivero.com/shop/).
@@drphilipadu Thank you, Dr., for your response. I am currently doing a PhD in education which is related to Qualitative approach. I will check your recommended link for more information.
You're welcome @@SeyhaKun-qb9ub! I wish you all the best with your research.
very interesting
Thank you!!
Dr. Adu thank you for this helpful video. Please how can I code focus group, normal paticipants and other groups together or should each be coded separately?
You're welcome! If they are all going to help to address your research questions, yest, you can code them together. However, I suggest you have separate files for focus group and other groups. For example, you can have a transcript (file) for focus group 1, another file for focus group 2.
@@drphilipadu Thank you sir.
Hi Dr. Philip. Thank you for this video. It is very useful and well explained. Where can i buy the Nvivo app? Are you selling it please?

@@drphilipadu Thank you!
Thank you for this helpful video. Is there any way to export all the references for a single file, rather than all the references for a node?
You're welcome @jessicayoung6583! I'm totally sure about how to do it but you can try the following:
1. Go to the 'Explore' tab
2. Click on 'Matrix Coding Query'
3. On the "Matrix Coding Query - Results Preview', click on the '+' sign and select the file you are interested in and click on 'OK'
4. On the right hand-side of the "Matrix Coding Query - Results Preview', click on the '+' sign and select all the codes created and click on 'OK'
5. Click on 'Run Query'
6. Right-click on the matrix table created and click on 'Transpose'
7. Right-click on the matrix table and click on 'Export Coding Matrix'
I hope this helps!
@@drphilipadu Thanks so much for the speedy reply. This has worked in terms of exporting the names of the nodes for the one file (THANK YOU 😀), but doesn't have the associated references. I'd like to see the associated transcript segments as well. Thoughts? Am I asking too much of the software?
@@jessicayoung6583 You're welcome! The numbers in the cells are the references. When you double-click on the numbers, it will take you to the segments. Also, you can create 'Framework Matrix'. See this video: ruclips.net/video/YefISJUAFks/видео.htmlsi=mQaYPnElK9OL410c&t=788

Good presentation, how can one get this slide show?
Here is the slides: drive.google.com/file/d/1zZF7mKDKylHiKx3yx6zhpX-3CyER-h16/view?usp=sharing
Dr. Philip! thanks for explaining well. To answer 1 research questions, I have conducted 6 interviews. I have coded one interview, is there any technique that can be used in Nvivo to auto code remaining 5 transcripts ?
You're welcome!! You go to the 'Autocode' tap and select 'Use existing coding patterns' and click on 'Next' and follow the prompts. To use this strategy, you need to code at least 10% of your data.
Thanks for the response. While coding, I missed to create node for my RQs. Now all codes are mixed. How can I segregate them according to each RQ?
@@nabilatabassum5805 Can you create a container (Node) for each research question and drag and drop the codes into their respective RQ container.
@@drphilipadu Kindly guide me how to create container node in Nvivo 10? I have tried a lot to fix the issue but still all nodes are mixed up.

Sir for scale development thematic analysis is best or grounded theory is best P.S. Own your book and I love it.
Thank you for ordering my book!! It all depends on the research approach you used and the main purpose of the study or the analysis. If you plan to analyze data to develop a theory to help explain a phenomenon then grounded theory at the data analysis stage would be helpful.
thanks this is so helpful to have an overview, and so concise. What is the next video please? as you have a few wonderful ones. Also my sample for assignment is an evaluation it has one core aim and several key aims, i could summarise some fo the aims, or should i have one for each aim? there are 6 key aims and 5 objective aims which are similar
