    There are a lot of games from this era that I loved playing and replaying, even though now I know that they're kind of shit. There's something about being in your early teens, when you lacked the life experience to contextualize a piece of media and determine whether or not it's a bunch of janky corny shit, that just enabled you to experience a game's most abstract essence and atmosphere without filtering it through a grown-up analytical eye that ends up spoiling it.

    So i wasn't the only one who fall in love with the save room BGM .. :)

    experience compared to Dead Aim and the travesty that is gun survivor 2

      It is yeah! I actually really like Survivor. I reviewed it years ago, but that video doesn't really do it justice. I might revisit it in a video similar to this one at some point.

    • @MrUnlimax
      @MrUnlimax 7 лет назад +5

      Please consider doing that for Survivor , that would be a top choice and a revisit to this underrated classic .. there's so many atmospheric moments in that game that i can't even count .. from the the eerie beginning area / the black cat pictures / the sound of the falling water while hearing and seeing the lickers slowly walks toward you / the eerie room 201 in the hospital / the kids home and the outside of it .. etc .. this game is riddled with atmospheric moments that i would like for you to discover yourself :)

    I’ll never forget what the super best friends “Pat” said about that song and it perfectly sums it up.
    “That basement them sounds like a bunch of clowns farting.
    I replayed it not to long again and holy shit you can just imagine 8 clowns in a room farting into trombones.
    Edit: apparently the music composer told everyone he was deaf and only did it come out YEARS later he was lying and actually had another guy doing the music which he took credit for.

    Oh!! Your point on the lighting working like a "fog of war" of sorts, is very interesting.
    In fact, know this now, I gained a new perspective on atmospheric games.
    I just watch SBH's Fatal Frame video and he talked about the "negative space", a contrast between the light and dark areas; the area near to you and area further. It creates the feeling that something beyond is _not quite right_

    • @thorhighheels
      @thorhighheels  7 лет назад +5

      Yeah "negative space" is a good way of putting it. It's why Silent Hill 2 works so well imo. Whether if its the fog or the dark, you can only see a few feet ahead of you.

    The scene in which the camera travels from the ocean to point at the ship with a slow motion with "missing frames" and then a close shot of the ship with the tempo of the music, is brutally spectacular, that composition, direction is beastly and it will always stay in my head.

    Great video once again dude. This game is probably a guilty pleasure of mine. Bad story, protagonist, voice acting and game play. And yet I like it artistically, ost wise, atmospherically and the fact that I was in a great position in my life when I first played it so it has nostalgia value I guess.

    The save room theme was originally composed by Raj Ramaya and he even voiced Bruce McGivern and he composed a scrapped original version of the save room theme that had vocal in it but was scrapped for a different opening theme from the J rock band known as Rize with their song Gunshot and there is the original version up in RUclips if you wanna check it out and it certainly is not a bad game per say since my first playthrough the game is smooth and I enjoyed the control scheme between third and first person perspective and it works with what is available for the game. I do however wished that they at least bring back Bruce's character in OR make Fong Ling as an old acquaintance of Ada Wong as that could set up a nice exposure to Ada's personal life or her past.

    I honestly believe capcom should have done what they did with Code Veronica (and other RE games) and put it on psn while using psmove as a lightgun replacement. Matched up with the Navigation remote you could move with that one and use the regular move controller to shoot. Would have been a perfect fit. Though I do understand the game probably wasn't on their radar to do such a thing.

    I think what's interesting about Dead Aim is that I actually disagree with your critique about the controls, but only for a very specific scenario. If you are playing strictly on a controller, the game is beyond awful, and that's that. It's clunky, hard to aim, and in a lot of boss battle situations, almost impossible. Anyone would agree with you that it's really, really bad.
    However I owned a copy of the game with a Guncon 2, and what I found out was that you could play the game using a hybrid of a controller and a guncon. It almost felt like playing a Nintendo Wii game. You held the controller's D-pad side in your left hand, and the guncon in the right.
    The left hand controlled the D-pad, L1 and L2 buttons. The game actually allowed the L1 and L2 buttons to do everything. Not only does it switch your movement from tank controls, to FPS controls, but it also opens doors, manages collection of inventory, etc. etc. Everything involving Bruce's movement is conveniently all on one hand.
    Of course, using the light gun means everything is much easier to shoot. Pulling the trigger goes into FPS mode, and then you get to fire away all you want with much better accuracy. The game comes from being painfully difficult to play, to being borderline boringly easy. I even started speed running the game due to how easy a lightgun makes it.
    But that doesn't mean the game is good. The game never tells you that you can play the game this way, you need a guncon, and a working CRTV, which is heavy and hard to find these days for a lot of people. Lightgun games are sadly a dead generation of games, and the only way to really and truly find this game 'good', is with a lot of effort that many would say isn't worth dealing with.
    ... Other than that? Totally spot on about the atmosphere and music. It's some of the best. ... Not feeling the subtitles not matching the voice acting though. How the hell did they screw that up.

    I loved Dead Aim. I like most RE, when RE4 arrived I was like... meh. I don't know, something in it just wasn't for me and it's been like this up until now. Dead Aim had all the enthralling atmosphere I love in horror games (my favourites being Silent Hill) so I think that's what makes me remember it today. I also loved the idea of being on the ship and the scenario gave it a pressence different from other RE.
    Also, my favourite RE is Zero xD I don't know ok? I just love it. Not that the rest are bad or anything, they are iconic. But I have to choose a favourite and I always pick up Zero. I think I like "different" things xD

    I was always a Silent Hill over Resident Evil fan but I have loved all kinds of survival horror. I remember picking up Dead Aim because the light gun mechanic seemed fun and it was actually surprisingly enjoyable. The soundtrack hit me like Silent Hill lite, and to this day, Dead Aim and RE7 on VR are the only ones I really enjoy in that series. As far as light gun games go, it actually felt like a real game as opposed to something that's just a rail shooter.

    • @thorhighheels
      @thorhighheels  6 лет назад

      I never really looked at it from the perspective of a pure light gun game before, but I suppose it is pretty impressive compared to more simple arcade style games. Although, wouldn't you have to dual wield a light gun and a controller to be able to walk? Can't imagine that being very comfortable.

    • @DylanDekk
      @DylanDekk 6 лет назад +2

      From what I can remember, the PS2 light gun has a d-pad where the hammer would be on a revolver and the controls were quite intuitive. I think you could either play with just the gun's d-pad to walk around (a serious pain), or do a controller in one hand and the gun in the other, but it was actually quite comfortable. All the right hand controls would still be there on the gun, and you'd just hold the controller in the left hand and use the left analog stick. It sounds like a pain but it felt really natural and intuitive, and I honestly wished more light gun games used that kind of system to get away from the stereotypical rail shooter stuff.

    I've always like this game, despite all its flaw. The only "complaint" I got with it, it's way too short... only like 3 to 4 hours to complete. The first time I've played RE4 it took me like almost 30 hours to complete. And "zombies on a boat" for the PS2 was WAY BETTER executed in the "excellent" COLD FEAR (who protagonist -Tom Hansen- looks quite similar to Bruce McGivern...)
    Great review as always! (Y) Regards from an Argentinian fan! :D ñ_ñ

    Pretty sure you're supposed to play this game with a Guncon.
    Anyways, this game looks *amazing* for a PS2 title and has a real good ambience track/ost as well.

    hey ThorHighHeels,
    what do you think about the sound design in Curse - The Eye Of Isis for the PS2?
    I had a simmiliar experience with this game: great sounds and mood, crappy gameplay
