That is the best-controlled soprano saxophone I've heard outside of the classical world. Usually that instrument tends towards the Sidney Bechet side of things - which, don't get me wrong, I like a lot, but it sounds less like a sax in a higher register than like an entity unto itself. Bravo. Oh, and the entire performance and arrangement was delightful as well.
I 100% agree, she is a phenomenal player! Choosing to play the curved soprano definitely factors into why it sounds so much like a saxophone though; the straight ones get this “Shawm” like tone that other straight reed instruments have that the saxophone doesn’t. Her pitch, articulation and control are what really deal the deal though!
Soprano sax players who do not make my ears bleed are a rare breed and Grace Kelley (as well as the ones mentioned below - also on my regular rotation list) are the exception rather than the rule. This recording is just wow. Maybe a little more ambience in the mix but the sax and the rest of the musicianship and Nataly's vocals are spot on. What these people show is possible is amazing - and I think I'm wearing out that word using it in connection with my comments on their stuff. As long as we are mentioning worthy soprano sax recordings: Dave Grusin's "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon For New York" from his album The Gershwin Connection.
One of my favourite things about Pomplamoose is the faces on everyone playing: you can tell they know they're playing awesomely themselves, but also looking constantly amazed and impressed by their bandmates too!
Pomplamoose has done it again: Taken a song and given it their own spin that makes an every bit as fun as the original, yet almost completely different
age makes no difference...actually, the older i find myself, the more musical "Experience" I have. This version isnt what a teenager would find attractive as, well, it takes years to learn to appreciate such artistry. You cannot learn it. God Bless Gene. TK
Ah, man. I got to see Grace perform in Brooklyn a couple of years ago. She was playing with my friend's band as a guest and I was just completely blown away. So cool to see her here. Literally the coolest person I've ever been near.
Came here for Grace Kelly (the song--I'm a Mika lover.) Stayed for Grace Kelly (the sax)! OMG. And posted this comment for Pomplamoose, always brings a smile despite this pandemic. Merci!!
Awesome! Loved the Sax, and sax solo! Nothing like a sax solo. My all time favorite sax solos are from: save it for later, and sole salvation from the English beat. Grace Kelly's playing is some of the best, too! Not to mention all the wonderful artists the rest of you are! Thanks for another great tune!

This is SO good... hard to believe it's really recorded live in a living room!! And the studio geek in me always gets excited when I hear an MD-441 in action. That mic sounds great on Nataly's voice.
This is an awesome song! I never cease to be amazed at the new dimensions of talent and enjoyment from your music. You and Jack always seem to pull beautiful rabbits out of your hat: The musicians, singers and talent you bring to us always blows me away. The sax was something I didn't fully anticipate; it had such a full and vibrant voice played by a truly talented artist. There's a plethora of reasons why Pomplamoose is my top patreon recipient!

Look for "English Man in New York" or "Driven To Tears"
