Travel speed is one of the biggest factors in heat input.
you might weld hot and fast and have less heat input than welding cold and slow.
In this video, Andrew Cardin demonstrates tig welding a tee joint in 11ga carbon steel at 163 amps but using a fairly fast travel speed.

I taught myself to weld through these videos and a college text book. I’ve been welding titanium in a chamber for the aerospace industry going on 6 years. Thank you Jody! You gave me a good career through these videos.

I weld heat exchanger dealing with various metals. But aero space was also a next big goal for me. How’d you get into it ?

@@xavieredmonds6575 I was posting pictures of my welds on Instagram and someone I went to high school with saw it and told me to come in for a weld test. Huge ups and downs in aerospace but chamber welding titanium is like nothing else. Really fun!

@@xavieredmonds6575 Honestly,I just put in the work for a couple years welding motorcycle exhaust systems and got a reputation as a decent welder. Someone I knew as a kid saw what I was doing and had me come in for a weld test. Since most people have no experience chamber welding titanium yet where mostly looking for some basic skill, a good attitude and willingness to learn.

Great video, the speed of your welding when TIG welding is definatly underrated!

The que I look for to see if my heat and filler are balanced is if the puddle looks like a sideways teardrop. Works for stainless too.

Here's a side note in relation to getting flashed with auto darkening hoods ..
While welding full-time in the early 2000s some of the electronic/auto darkening hoods would not darken while using inverter technology welders that were becoming more popular. Never had a problem on a transformer machine.
    Appreciate the videos Jody!

I had similar experience when I sold my miller syncrowave and got an inverter. My speedglas started flashing me.

Tight arc is the answer, the key in not dipping into the pool. One day I will be half as good as this Jody kid.👍

Counterintuitive at first, but visor flashing might be caused by excess sensitivity, specially on cheaper models. TIG emits a lot of light which can overload the sensors circuit, which shuts down to save itself and sacrifice your eyes. I've "solved" this issue on my first helmet by taping a bit of toilet paper (1 ply of a 2 ply) in front of the sensors, followed by a fair amount of swearing after understanding the issue and finally buying a better visor, Good helmets with good visors are not just a luxury.

When do you lay the filler rod vs dip? Is it just preferred style? I am about to start learning Tig welding,

    • @weldingtipsandtricks

It’s just one of several methods used. Not preferred by all but preferred by some for certain situations

@@weldingtipsandtricks I won't be doing aluminum, only steel plate and tubing for personal stuff, I'll try both options and see what works best in my application.

@@dfrmotorsports4591I hobby TIG and my latest project had poor fit up. The filler rod was the right size for the gap, so I used the lay wire technique for the first time and it worked a treat!
