Appreciate your review. I got lucky in NC and grabbed 2 of these for ~$80 a piece. For the price point and quality, this is an excellent pour. I have a c920 that is unopened and I plan on doing a blind comparison. I didn’t get the ethanol that you did on the nose but we all have our own perceptions.
@@Best_Served_Neat_On_Ice Just did the side by side, blind (I use a lazy Susan, close my eyes and spin 😂) the C923 won. Hands down. I get dark cocoa, caramel, dense oak, barrel char, viscous, long finish. Everything was a step up from the C920.
in the end all Elijah barrel proofs are a buy and some you hunt some to bunker depending on your experience. I got 2 in the mail cant wait to try. Keep up the good work always appreciate your content and reviews. Sounds like the perfect bottle share bottle that will stand out.
This is your palate and you have to go with what it’s giving you. That’s what makes whiskey so interesting it has different flavors for different people. And not all are necessarily good yet not terrible either. Nice review and honest and that is what really matters. And your playing with an orchestra that has to be quite the experience. Enjoy!!
I bought two bottles based on the hype from other trusted reviewers, and I’m interested to see where I land after opening it up. I am little perplexed to see the divide, but it seems to at least be consistent - bitter and drying are the negative comments. Dryness I rarely consider unless it is extreme, but bitterness is definitely a turn off. B518, C920, and A123 are my favorites. B518 for its overall near perfection of balance, C920 for its incredible power and potency and brashness, and A123 for its evocative and singular focus on that rickhouse-esque aroma and flavor. I’ll be very bummed if this batch doesn’t hang with the other 3 based on the expectation.
Good review. I think this is old school ECBP for me. The classic heavy brown sugar and vanilla oak. One of the best batches in a while. Of course every palate is different. Hopefully the rumor that next year will have a 14 year label is true.
Great review. I think the 13 year age statement and 130+ proof hyped this as being equally good as the pre-2021 batches. It beats anything since A121 for sure. But before that I’m not so sure. In any case it’s great Heaven Hill threw us a bone before probably going back to sub 120 proof and under 12 years.
At that price point, I’d grab any number of older batches from local folks who trade etc. Plus, age isn’t everything. The 13.5yr age statement doesn’t mean much to me if the whiskey has issues. I think it looks great on paper, but the execution on this batch wasn’t that great. Easy for folks to hype it though given its stats and great palate. Just my opinion of course!
@@DrumsAndDrams Yeah, I don't think it's as good as C920 (which is my favorite batch), but it's better than any ECBP since that. Are these 3+ year old ECBPs still available on the market? (I don't really follow too much of the secondary market) And I get your point that stats aren't everything, but IMO they are something. I think anyone would be hard pressed to find a 12+ year old barrel proof bourbon for less than $150 in these current times. If they are available, I'm not looking in the right places haha (just to add I picked one up for ~$100 and I'm not disappointed at that price).
good review ! I appreciate your realistic pros and cons on this batch despite the fomo. I was lucky to grab it at the distillery and do really like it but there are other batches that i may lean towards here and there.
Aside from the strong ethanol I get from the nose there is not much wrong with this bourbon. Does not drink hot being a 133 proof. If you can get it at retail it's definitely a buy and bunker. Keep up the great vids!!!
Well done Cam. Your very good at describing what your tasting. I haven't tried it yet, so no opinion. Thanks for the great review and I hope your weekend in Buffalo goes well.
Convinced of a bad bottle situation in alot.of these situations I have a A123 that is dogshit and folks love it I love C923 I think the cherry and funky oak is stellar
Interesting review! And now I can't wait to get my hands on one! It reminds me of a discussion I was having with someone about RR13 vs Stagg. I think the vast majority of Staggs are delicious. But I think that they lack the refinement of a Russell's 13. It sounds like you are saying the ECBP C923 is delicious, but it lacks the layers to pick apart. I also wonder whether people are being influenced by the age statement here. I don't know because I haven't tried. The B523 just hit our market and I ended up passing because I have been buying too much lately and it has received mediocre reviews.
I'm looking forward to your take on this one if you end up being willing to share once you snag one! Particularly interested to see what you think of the nose. For me, it's REMARKABLY better when there's very little whiskey in the glass. The whiskey-to-air ratio ends up eliminating the strong ethanol/closed off quality and really allows it to shine. I wish I would've mentioned that in this review, but sometimes I just forget in the moment. To your point, I definitely think the age statement is influencing a large number of folks. I couldn't agree more with your comments on Stagg vs. Russell's 13. I think that's probably an apt comparison here!
So glad I don't have to hunt these or the LCBP and that they sell right at retail. Typically buy pretty much each batch and then go back and backup the ones I like. C923 is a great bottle but I'm still not convinced that I like it more than recent batches C922 or A123. B523 was a bit meh but even a meh bottle of ECBP is still a pretty good sip.
Good review but what hotel has a lineup of whiskey that was behind you? No one would carry that much booze on the road would they. 😂 Clearly, I am not finding the right hotels.
Lemme get a sample of that Virtue Spirits purple label back there!!! lol... Man, I wish I could have gotten one of those! *EDIT: Willing to swap samples for another killer offering if you're open to it
My goodness my man traveling well wit dat juice in da background, daaaaaaaam!
Thank you so much for not doing your review on the neck pour.
Idc what anyone says, despite the hate, B523 was stellar.
Nice to have you in my
Home town of buffalo if I would have known we could have set up a little tasting
outstanding..you have an excellent palate and wonderful ability to describe and compare. cheers buddy!
Thank you!
A123 was the most enjoyable ECBP this year for me
Probably same for me, though I need to do a blind!

I'd be curious to hear how you think it compares to C920.

I would love to know what you think is better and worth $150 or so.
Ty Segal and the the Freedom Band.
Great review.

Mix c923 and a123 together. Great blend
Will have to try that! Sounds like it might fix some of the rough edges of the C923 but add some kick to the balance of the A123. hmm...
Impressive travel setup you got there, Cam - my hotel room never looks that good 🤔
Trust me, everything out of frame is an absolute disaster!
I get that it may not be worth the hype. But in this market, you don't think that a good 13.5 year old barrel proof bourbon is worth $150?
At that price point, I’d grab any number of older batches from local folks who trade etc.

If hype was veiled hope, we’d understand otherwise continue to try some of the older batches because this whiskey has a rich history….

C922 was an absolute gem in my opinion. Very slept on and not talked about but I liked it more than c920. Have one in the bunker still.
Great review. I’m just wondering if you ever got back to the Buckner’s 13 and what you thought later. Just found one and fell in love with it
Lmfao… i get nothing but muddled cherry grape fruit covered with fruit! No pepper or ethanol
Which batch do you recommend this year? A B or C
