How To Shutter Drag Images | Photography Tips

- Here are two things that you need in order to create shutter drag images. So we have my camera here and the first thing you're gonna need is a wide angle lens. So here I have the G Master 35mm lens. This is my favorite lens to use for shutter drag images. The next thing that you're going to need is a flash. And this is going to go on top of your camera. So here I have the Godox V1 flash. And you want to make sure that you're pointing this directly forward. This flash is going to mount on top of your camera, and it's going to allow you to take shutter drag images.
In order to take shutter drag images, you have to have a pretty low shutter, around 1/10 and you're gonna point this flash directly forward. Bring your aperture high like maybe F/5.6 and when you take the photo you're gonna drag your camera in a sweeping motion like this (shown in video). Which is going to give you the shutter drag results.
Camera Settings: ISO 100, 1/10/ F/5.6
One last important tip, make sure flash power is at minimum such as 1/128th power or maybe 1/64th power.
Add too much flash power with a slow exposure settings can equal an overexposed image
How are the subjects not blurred with the sweeping motion of the camera?
@@joshhart4931because it’s not drastic (movement). Also a high aperture like f/8 with a wide angle usually makes everything in the shot more in focus vs a telephoto lens.
@@joshhart4931 Flash freezes subjects on sensor even with long exposure. You can really whip it at 1/10th and still get fairly frozen subjects while ambient lights trail.
great tip, i was wondering if it was manual or ttl flash !
@@marclabroalways manual
Be careful dragging your shutter and don't forget to change your shutter back to the normal shutter speed. I've seen wedding photographers forget things. We are on our feet sometimes for hours and you do get burned out at times.
When you drag your shutter turn on display image after I take it. This way if you forget you will see it when you go back to taking normal photos. And know to change the shutter speed.
Nice and simple
great tutorial
On top of the camera😮
I normally put mine under the lens
I did the blurring lights flash by accident with my 2 1/4 film camera BRONICA ETR & 75mm standard lens. I had the shutter speed at 30 instead of 125.
Great feeds ❤️❤️🙏🙏
This is not dragging the shutter!
Dragging the shutter is a long exposure used to use ambient light. Night shots or interior shots.
Had the Z fc for a while. Really nice camera. Though I am now shooting with a Lumix S5 II and Lumix S9 if I were to go back to Nikon I would probably pick up the Z f.
Great info ......but on topic?
Subbed
This is not 'dragging the shutter'!
This is combination of a slow shutter speed, rear curtain flash and ICM.
Note slower shutter speed vs faster flash and deliberately moving the camera will give light trails or with people in the scene then movement trails with the final position of that person then frozen when the flash goes off.
Never heard of mixing it with ICM but that certainly isn't 'shutter drag' which doesn't refer to moving your camera - that's ICM.
35mm is a wide lens?
I was going to say the same thing 😂
Right?!?
Any lens that wil capture the shot......obviously
Hot girl photographer logic
Of course it is a wide angle. Anything wider than the human eye equivalent focal length is a wide angle lens.
Quick question: Does rear curtain synch accomplish same of similar results?
Yes but not necessarily.
what flash setting are you using? TTL or manual?
manual
A74 gang🤝🏽
Thanks sis
I actually use a higher ISO for ambient.
May I suggest using Wescott? F, J2, that is a crazy Speedway. I believe they have a little more power than the godox has
Thank you
Wow the first great photography tip ever on youtube after all those wannabes
-35mm
-wide angle
Choose one
Make sure you point it directly forward, maybe try a bit of bounce😮
I know this is off topic, but is that an α9ii?
Okay we get how to do it, does anyone wanna show how to piece the shots together that actually makes the effect..
You don’t piece them together. It’s one photo. Takes time and takes multiple photos to accomplish. If you can’t achieve it, try lowering shutter speed more.
The people are not dragged because the flash "burned" their image into the sensor. The scene in general is underexposed so the sensor doesn't get any more information from the people, but the lights in the background still shine bright enough to give some.
That’s the first time I’m seeing a left handed camera
Its not a lefthanded camera. The video is just mirrored. You can see that the words Godox and Sony are mirrored.
😂😂😂😂
Yummm
When did slow speed sync become "shutter drag". I hope it's got its correct pronoun.
Just like the style 'High Waisted Jeans' turned into 'Mom Jeans', the names of shooting styles and techniques can change over the decades... and Centuries.
35mm isn't that wide.
Another tip do not touch your view finder with bare fingers ..
35mm is not a wide lens
Actually by definition it is. A lens is considered wide-angle when it covers the angle of view between 64° and 84° which in return translates to a 35-24mm lens in full frame terms.
Not “shutter drag” not correct
And who does this?
