Actually the Gilded Age extended from roughly 1870 to 1900, so the 1920s looks are about twenty years off 🙈
Not sure it’s the worst But participants do seem to ignore the theme more and more every year and the designers seem to be getting lazy about giving up their clothes I’m talking about you Louis Vuitton.
For Johnny's look the singular stripe down the left arm is a signature of Peter Do's designs, it has appeared previously in some of the garments he's designed. It's because Peter himself has a tattoo that starts from the bottom of his ear down to his hand.
Re Kim's dress: I think it's disappointing and makes me sad because she could have worn a replica (like the one she changed into after the carpet) and had the same effect. I don't think any of us would be sitting here saying "she should have lost weight and worn the real dress". And yet she had to put her body through that torture for an hour of wearing it. I get people are saying it's "method acting" but idk where is the line of what we say is ok to put ourselves through for a dress?
Thissss
I’d say she gets about 100 times the publicity for wearing the original dress than she would have gotten if she wore a replica. Plus, talking about quickly losing that much weight adds to the story.
@@ninamarie177 valid for sure. I mean we are here talking about it. But she is Kim Kardashian so she would get a lot of publicity no matter what. It's hard to measure what could have been.
I’m honestly shocked (and yet not) by this... I’ll never understand the fascination with putting on a dead woman’s clothes.... I love Marilyn Monroe but women’s bodies were different 70 years ago, and sizing was different back then. Kim K is already one of the most famous women on the planet; I do not see why she insisted on wearing the very same dress and losing so much weight in order to do so....
lemme just say: a swanky club in Manhattan has a better portfolio of luxurious and extravagant outfits than the Kardashian lineup at the Met.
this isn't an anecdote. I (used to) see it every other weekend for years.
one of the reasons that a god awful show like Sex and the City was popular in NYC was cz their aesthetic was a realistic reflection of irl styles in real-time. a lot of it is dated and trash now (the Dior Saddle, the Fendi Baguette and the Birkin) but at the time, Carrie's wardrobe was stylistically very accessible if you were willing to pay more than average for said styles.
Fun Fact about the flute!! Its a Lunn flute and is considered one of the most expensive flutes ever made it's super ornate and I believe is called the "Nymph Envy(?)" Also! Lizzo has a Bachelors in Flute Performance and maybe also a Masters?
Did not know that, thank you!
I personally believe from next year there should be a new merit based system where Anna Wintour (and maybe people voting on Instagram) get to decide if the entrants get let in and if so how nice of seats/food they get. It's basically the hunger games anyway let's make it the hunger games with less penguin waiter suits.
I think Billie’s look was my favorite but I was so annoyed that people didn’t stick to the theme cause it would’ve been so fun to see something a bit more accurate. The Gilded Age was actually 1870-1900 so it was disappointing to see people dress for the Roaring 20s era. Also would’ve been nice to see more black/brown folks included in this review though maybe the media outlet just didn’t include them.
Yes to all this.
I think people confused The Gilded Age and The Golden Age of Hollywood
@@niamhhardman4287 yea not a lot of research done at all from the looks of things
@@niamhhardman4287 That would actually make sense with what Kim went for...
I've read that the guilded age also featured a lot of feathers, and furs, and things that are really out there to show wealth (like stuffed birds as headpieces - or there was this one dress that had cat tails - actual cat tails - sewn onto the skirt). Which would explain how that feathered dress is on theme, and also, Billie's black hair as a statement reminds me of a photo I saw of a woman with a wing on her hat - it's not the same, but the slightly garish visual weight of it makes sense to me!
Edit : the woman in the dress with cat tails on it had a taxidermied cat on her hat, and a choker with gems spelling out "Puss" on it, and I have to say, Billie's like exactly on theme with her entire outit, necklace included! There's a really good Slate article with ideas for the Met from a few days ago, that I first saw the picture in.
Blake Lively just stole the show, my goodness. And Ryan Reynolds didnt even try to own up to her 😂😂
So sad you didn't look at Blake Lively's she killed it 😭😍 Her dress was inspired by New York City and had a reveal on the red carpet as the statue of Liberty turning from copper to green as it oxidised, which actually happened during the guilded age so historically it's on theme. It's also covered in the constilations that cover the ceiling of grand central station, and I just think it's so cool to make a reference to the time when then theme is a specific age rather than just the fashion alone. Stunning.
The balance of the beaut planned and prepped vids and the impromptu vids is perfect 🤗🤗
I agree with someone earlier in the comments that it would have been nice to review more brown and black people. Quannah Chasinghorse was amazing and Bad Bunny did a take on a sporting outfit.
What I don’t get is that this would be the most fun theme ever!! Why they gotta ignore such a cool theme?
right? if i was invited and got this theme i'd be so excited! it's a dream to wear dresses like this, so sad
"I have avoided Tiktok, Twitter, and Instagram all morning" honestly goals LOL I'm always doom-scrolling as soon as my alarm goes off.
This one might be the worst because I think it had so much potential to be so good and yet so many looks were disappointing. Some previous themes have been very challenging but this one should have way more slam dunks than it did. The styling and designs seemed generally off-theme or just lazy, and it's such a far cry from the Heavenly Bodies year, for example.
You should have reviewed Blake Lively’s outfit, she always looks amazing
Blake Lively has the best dress every year!!
i have to mention Lena Situation, a french youtuber (not to say THE french youtuber) and she had such a lovely dress, really summery vibe and she respected the theme !
i love watching you judging celebrity's look, i'm here for it
I was waiting to see your reaction to Blake Livelys dress. I absolutely loved it 😍
Blake Lively!
i screamed when you reacted to johnny suh
I loved the vid but i would love to have seen the pics of the outfits throughout the whole review. I sometimes forgot what dress we were talking about :/
I have a very specific niche pet peeve and it's when celebrities don't dress to the theme for the met gala. Especially when they're people who walk red carpets for their jobs! If you go to the met gala in a plain tux or just a pretty dress, they could look stunning but I just don't care about it lol You had such an amazing opportunity and you didn't run with it!!
The Gala should have given us drama! Opulence! Elegance! Indulgence! ... instead it was giving zara
Blake Lively was amazing!
I would've loved to see more of range of designers, and maybe not the same old huge names. Like it seems almost no one considered the sustainability aspect but by upcycling vintage pieces from that era it would be so easy to make something new and stick to all the themes. Also would have liked to see more of a range in the styles from the era, and not just the 1920's great gatsby type thing
never heard of carter baizen himself??!
I liked Blake Lively and Sarah Jessica Parker. I think Blake's was my favorite look of the night
YOUVE NEVER HEARD OF SEBASTIAN STAN?!!? Hahahaha amazing!
Hi Lucy! Just for a bit more context: due to the pandemic, the 2021 Met Gala was in September instead of May. Bc the two events were so close, they made the theme two parts: In America: A Lexicon of Fashion and In America: An Anthology of Fashion. Gilded Glamour was actually the dress code (meaning white tie), but the theme was still American fashion. That's why the Marilyn dress was such a perfect choice for Kim and why she reiterated that it's the most American thing she could think of. That's also why we saw some great archival pieces.
There is always a theme and a dress code (e.g. Camp: Notes on Fasion, studied triviality; In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, American Independence) I still wish more people had leaned into the Gilded Age, but they weren't necessarily off-theme.
What about Blake Lively!!
Agree Bellas after party outfit was the best outfit of the entire met gala , never seen anything like it it was gorgeous
… you’ve… never heard of … Sebastian Stan?!?!?!?????
my thoughts exactly! I am in love with that man but I will say his outfit was horrific.
your hair is always so nice in your videos, giving me hir envy ❤️👌🏻
The Gilded Age was 1870 to 1900. Not the 1920's.
Sad you missed Nicola Coughlan! Her dress was one of my faves I thought she looks absolutely stunning and on theme
Loved this such a fun vid!
Loved this type of content for you!!!!
Normani, Tessa Thompson, Madelaine Petsch, and Lizzo absolutely killed it by being on theme and looking stunning and fresh too. Lady Gaga’s look goes slightly too Elizabethan in my opinion, but is still very on theme and breathtaking. The Daily Mail picked a very weird list lol you barely got to see any of the good ones 😂
Lady Gaga wasn't at the met gala this year?
@@georgiafenoulhet5034 lol oops I saw a photo of her that was going around with all of the other Met photos and just assumed she was there. She gets a pass for not being exactly on theme then lmao
Ooh what nail polish are you wearing? Love the colour!! 💕 Also, great vid, such a nice way to get an overview of some of the standout looks in comparison to some news sites with very little info. Some great outfits this year, but as always I’d love to see more creativity and interpretations around the theme, especially when the theme refers to such a rich and iconic period in history and fashion!
How does so many of these celebrities not know when the gilded age was 😩
Your content is beautiful
Very few understood the assignment this year.
For Olivia Rodrigo, I feel like her dress is a bit lazy because it's so similar to Zoey Deutch's 2021 MET outfit (Versace as well if I'm not mistaken).
Also, too bad you didn't look at Riz Ahmed's look. It's out of the box compared to other men, and from what I've read, the story behind it is actually researched.
Nice to have your thoughts ♡
PS: Surprised no one asked you about Blake Lively's look !
You should’ve done khloé too in the kardashian segment cause she just looks like Kim 🤣🤣
Unrelated but I love your cardigan
Blake lively! Also Billie was my favourite.
Nothing on Blake!?!? She was my favorite this year!
Honestly, the fact that you and HauteLeMode had almost opposite takes on these (not all, but several) shows how incredibly subjective it is. The only part that's "objective" is whether it's truly on theme or not, and if the historical references are right. So in conclusion, as we all already know, there is no right or wrong here. These "experts'" take are more or less as good as any.
You forgot Cloe. She looked the best out of the family.
I loved Billie’s look
Kim did not fit in the dress. It was open on the back because her butt lift could not be lost. (No amount of weight would make it fit)
That is why the coat was draped just so.
No Blake Lively? I am disappoint.
JOHNNY SUH MY RELIGION
How do you not know who Sebastian Stan is
It’s “Versach-eh”!
