Finally we were able to take a flight to #Asuncion and started our permanent residency process in Paraguay.
Paraguay offers one of the simplest permanent residencies in the whole world. It is easy to get but very valuable to have.
Learn in the video what documents you need to start your residency process.
After just a few months you will be able to hold your ID card in your hands, the #Cedula.
Once our work on the Cedula was done we focused on making our life in #SouthAmerica work. First thing, buying a 4x4 #SUV! Be part of #Mercosur and travel all of South America with us.

@@PLZRWD it is a possibility, we keep all our options open. Though Paraguay is an easy country to get residency but not so easy to get citizenship. There are other countries with easier ways to do so.

Hi! Amazing video, thank you for sharing. Really enjoy Asunción. Quick question: I am also thinking about getting residency with my wife. We are both US citizens and can get 90 days + 90 more days with an extension in countries like Argentina and Brazil. My question is this: with Paraguayan residency are you now able to travel to Mercosur countries for a longer period of time? Because if you could do that without having to worry about tax implications in those countries that would be amazing! We have a similar idea of making South America home and see Paraguay as being able to hopefully play a big part of that. Thank you for your time!
Thank you so much for your question. This is an important topics for many. The questions has two angles. The one thing is you traveling to the countries and if you are allowed to stay longer, and the other thing your, tax implications. So let me answer the tax part first, im not a lawyer nor accountant but as far as I know, you will be legally tax liable in almost any country in this world, in case you stay for longer than 180 days. How you handle this liability is up to you. Paraguay offers a Territorial Tax System. That means as a resident of Paraguay, you do not need to declare or pay taxes on income that is not generated from within Paraguay. (Even if you stay longer than 180 days). For US citizens though, it is to note that no matter where in the world you live, you will always be tax liable in the US, though i think i have heard there is certain ways around it, but you’d have to discuss this with a specialist.
The first part of your question, the traveling with Paraguayan residency, the ID card can be used to cross borders into other Mercosur countries, without having to show your passport. Generally you need to declare if you want to stay inside the country for longer than 3 months. We ended up staying in Brazil for 6 months, because we got an extension with the Federal Police in Brazil. As far as we noticed, if you cross to brazil with just the ID card, no one really knows when you entered or when you will leave Brazil. So we met many people who stay however long they want. This can go well, but it could also cause you problems. This is really up to your own judgement.

Paraguay is the place to do it. It’s one of the easiest permanent residencies to get and there are many used 4x4s available on the market. The purchase was easy, just the process takes a few weeks, to complete the registration. But you can already use your car during that time.

I was kinda surprised when you said that 4 months was needed to have your PR cards + ID cards. Woah!
Yea it was bad timing. There were Riots in the streets of Asuncion and so the government locked down for a few weeks. That’s why all the applications were backed up. The normal processing time is between 8 to 12 months but when you pay for “VIP” treatment you can usually have it within 6 weeks. At the moment that works perfectly fine. So everyone is good now… until the next riots start ;)

As for your Pan-American driving, do you have a solution for the gap between Panama and Colombia? There are no streets and the only way to get a car across is container shipping. It’s kinda pricy, otherwise we would drive back and forth from Mexico to Paraguay on a regular basis. Let me know your thoughts. 🙌🏼

So here I am now. Yes, the notarization for the countries that support it can be an apostille for your documents instead. Apostille is an international agreement of some countries. Paraguay accepts it and if your country also accepts it then you go with that. I hope that answers your question. Let me know if there is anything else i can help you with. hey there. great choice. once you are done with the application for residency, you will get a temporary residency permit and can stay with this permit in Paraguay until you have your residency. you can also leave Paraguay but then that temporary residency permit expires and you would have to come back into Paraguay with another 3 months Tourist visa. another option is to have your immigration helper mail you your residency documents with FedEx or something, then you don’t really have to come back until you want to. i hope that helps.

Hello there! I was wondering if I could also get residency/citizenship from Paraguay through military service like America? Thank you for your time!
Thank you so much for this great question. You mentioned the citizenship program of the US military. This actually just works if you are already a permanent residency holder and have a green card. Then you can apply for citizenship in just one year instead of five, but if you are a foreigner without residency then enlisting in the US army is not possible.
Contrary to the US, most other countries do not have a program for foreigners to enlist in their militaries, Paraguay included. Paraguay only accepts Paraguay citizens in its military and there is no way to enlist as a foreigner.
Though Paraguay residency is one of the easiest permanent residency to get in the world. So besides a few documents all you need is a short term deposit of 5000 USD or an academic degree. Thank you for your great question. A family can apply together as one entity and just need to deposit the 5000 usd one time for husband, wife and all their children under the age of 18. Unfortunately though, everyone has to be present to start the application process. Yes the internet is always an important topic! The good news here is that the bigger cities in Paraguay do have a vast expansion program with their Fiberglas internet. We never actually had our own internet contract but we stayed at many hotels and airbnbs. The last time we were in Asuncion about a year ago we got speeds up to 100 Mbit. When driving around though we saw advertisements for fiberglass up to 200 Mbit. The internet situation seems to change fast. In San Bernardino, a smaller city outside of Asuncion, we had 50 Mbit the first year and then a year later they upgraded the city to 100mbit. Paraguay is in a huge expansion phase at the moment and we left for our South America tour about a year ago. So things might have changed to the better already. On the countryside internet was just available through high antennas. But worst case scenario, this year Starlink Internet will become available in Paraguay, just like it is now in many other South American countries. The price probably around 55 usd per month and 450 usd for the dish. and many people we saw got a steady 250 Mbit download with it. Should we chose to buy land in a remote location that would be an option for us. But like I said, cities getting build out with fiberglass. To get specific companies just google the city & fiberglass internet and some options will show up. I hope that helped.

Thank you, I’m glad I can help a bit. The price of the PR in Paraguay depends a lot on convenience levels and tome frames. If you speak Spanish and have a lot of time on your hands, then you can apply for the residency yourself. It will take a week or two to get all the applications done in Asunción and it will cost you around 300 USD. That way you will get the final Residency ID cards in 8 to 12 months. If you wanna cut down that application time to one or two days and not deal with the officials, then you can get an immigration helper for around 1000 USD. That way you will still have to wait 8 to 12 months for the documents but the process at the beginning is easier. Another option is to get the VIP package. Then the application will be handled within one day and you will have your final documents within just 6 weeks. This is usually priced around 2000 USD.
There is lots of different immigration helpers out there. Some faster, some slower. Some will tell you one price at the beginning and then ask for more money later. You wanna avoid those. Hey Rianna, good to hear from you. Hoe gaat het met jouw? Great you are coming to Paraguay. Generally they will ask you for a criminal record of the past 5 years. This can be hard to get when you lived at many places. The easiest in this case is usually to get it from your country of citizenship. Hello Epru, thanks for your positive message. Yes you are both eligible for getting a residency without having to deposit the 5000 USD. Make sure though that your university diploma and your other documents are in original in english and are apostilled. In your case you would have to get this apostille from Egypt. Apostille always need to be applied in the country of origin of the document. Same is true for your birth certificate. The police record needs to be from the past 5 years. If these past 5 years were spent in Canada but your citizenship is not Canadian, then you also need to bring a apostilled residency confirmation. I hope this helps. I'm curious. Why would you go through permanent residency process if as you say, your plan is to stay for 3 months? You can stay in most countries for 90 days on a tourist visa, with the option of renewing for a further days.
Hey there, thank you for your comment. A great question! So our plan is to stay in the Americas for at least a few years. Maybe 5, maybe longer. Most of that time we want to spend in South America. Paraguay is in the center of South America and offers great connections to all other South American countries. Therefore it is an amazing location for a Home Base.
Also looking to the #FlagTheory, one can have as many residencies as one likes and the Paraguayan Residency is one of the easiest one to get worldwide. It is basically for life. So whenever in the future we want to permanently move to Paraguay, we always have that option. These are volatile times worldwide and you never know what country goes into another lockdown or turns against its own people. Having multiple options to go to is a big plus.
Additional to those thoughts, we are also planning on buying property in South America. Paraguay is currently experiencing a huge influx in immigrants. They all need places to live and rental property is getting tight. So i see a big business opportunity here. (See the next video in the series)
Overall Paraguay is an amazing place and in total we already spent over a year here. Our journey will continue but eventually after visiting many other countries we will always come back HOME: Paraguay!

Hello Henry, thanks for your question. The situation with your documents depend on your Citizenship and your current residency. When your country has a Apostille agreement with Paraguay, then you need to get your documents and then have them apositleld by the right ministry of your government. In this case that would be sufficient. If your country and Paraguay does not have an Apostille agreement, then you have to have your documents issued by your government, then you need to notarize the documents at a governmental approved notary, then you need to have those documents approved by the Paraguayan embassy that is responsible for your country. In general make sure that all your documents are available in either English, Spanish or in one of the languages that can be translated in Paraguay. I was in Paraguay about a week ago and loved it. I will have to agree about their Spanish. I do want the residency and also to possibly live there long term. I have a couple of more countries to check out first before I make my final decision. Paraguay is up there though. Ironically I didn't run into anyone trying to hustle me. Only the guys in the center of the city wanting me to change money with them. Also I contacted an immigration attorney down there and he wants $3,500 USD but he did tell me about the college degree which I have several. This makes things more attractive but I want to shop around some more to see if I can get a better price for filing my paperwork.

The challenge here really is to get the visa for Paraguay from the embassy and also the documents need to be notarized and then authorized by the Paraguayan embassy beforehand. How much is the cost in USD per acre of land or a typical house price?
In Paraguay most housing property is divided in lots of around 500m2. Enough for a one family house and your yard. In fancier neighborhoods in gated communities in the suburbs of Asuncion you will pay between 15 to 40,000 USD for the property. Building a simple one family house can range from 60,000 to 100,000 USD. These are Paraguayan Standards we are talking about. Building a US style house will probably cost US prices. These are suburban prices. In Asuncion you will pay a lot more, further on the countryside, less. It all depends on the standard of living that you are looking for. I hope that helps. Once you get your Paraguayan residency you can get your Paraguayan drivers license and you drive with that one. As a tourist you can drive with your passport and your native drivers license for up to three months. I have never needed an international drivers license, nowhere, ever. Hello Always Learning. Thanks for your questions. The criminal record is a background check that you have to get from your home country. You usually get this at some office of your federal police. It needs to include the last 5 years and cannot be older than 3 months at the time of application.
There is no need to buy property in Paraguay in order to get residency. You just need to proof you have 5000 USD as a deposit into the federal bank in Paraguay or have a University diploma.

Is the cost of living and quality of life better in Paraguay than Nicaragua? I have heard Nicaragua is a great place to live also, and inexpensive.
I’d say the living standard is higher in Paraguay than in Nicaragua. But the cost of living is also higher in Paraguay than in Nicaragua. I have been to both places but have spent more time in Paraguay. As with many countries, in Paraguay it depends on where you want to live and how big your budget is. You can find luxury places here or go for the cheapest of the cheap. It’s all possible. But generally speaking Paraguay is a fast developing nation. Mostly due to all the foreign investments mostly done by the neighboring countries and Europeans.

Very good question. As of now, your Paraguayan Permanent Residency is for life. The ID card, the Cedula, needs to be renewed every 10 years. As of now there is no minimum day requirements for you to stay inside the country.

Hello Adam, getting Paraguay residency is one of the easiest residency processes in the world. You need to have your birth certificate, a criminal record and a valid passport that gets you a stay in Paraguay for at least 3 months. That’s it, then you can start the process. In November 2022 there were some changes to the residency process. Now it is a two steps process. After the initial application you need to come back after two years and either present a deposit of about 5000 usd or your university degree. Then you have the permanent residency. @@adamputh1090 thanks for your question. I did a bit of an investigation. Citizenship in Paraguay is generally a tough topic. Every year hundreds of people apply for citizenship and just a few percent of them will actually be accepted. Paraguay is the country with the easiest residency program in the world but its a lot harder to get citizenship. Should you be accepted to get citizenship, which is a 10 to 15 year process and costs way above 10,000 USD, then there is ways to keep your current citizenship but generally Paraguay will ask you to lay it down. Just when you are born with dual citizen parents will it be easy to keep both of them. The exception is the very few countries that you listed. Residency is highly recommended in Paraguay but if Citizenship is your goal and you want to stay in a Latin country then i would suggest Mexico as the faster and more valuable option. @@japoncae7211 the deposit is given when you start your application process for the residency in Paraguay. Then it is held for the duration of your processing time. This processing time depends on if you do the application yourself (usually within 8 to 12 months) or if you higher an immigration helper. (Between 2 and 6 months, depending on the quality of your immigration helper and how much you pay). Then the money will be paid back to you in the local Paraguayan currency, Guaranis.

Hello Roseann, good to talk. What is your country of citizenship? US citizens can come to Paraguay without having to obtain a visa beforehand. You will get a 3 months tourist stay at arrival. This is true for many European countries and some other countries around the world as well. Somme countries though do need to get a Visa before they arrive in Paraguay. Your need to check with your Country’s foreign ministry if you need a visa for entering Paraguay. The US Green Card does not count as a valid travel document outside of the US. Great question. The requirements for Paraguay residency have slightly changed in November 2022. So since this video aired they made things a bit more streamlined, removed steps but also added one more step. At the moment you are not required to bring your proof of solvency at the initial application. The proof of solvency was either 5000 usd deposit per family or one family member having a Higher Education degree instead. This is now not required at the beginning of your journey, but you will have to bring it after two years, when you renew your temporary residency for the permanent residency. With the first application you get a 2 year residency and then you submit to the permanent residency. You are still able to all the things you wanted to do with your Paraguay residency in those first two years, so there is no compromise here. Do you need to translate your degree to Spanish?
Hey Victoria, that’s a great question. It really depends on your situation. The short answer is yes, but you need to consider a few things. If your degree is in English, I would recommend doing the translations in Paraguay. First get your Apostille or notarization on your degree and then come to Paraguay and do the translation at one of the authorized translators. They need to be authorized by the government of Paraguay, otherwise you’d have to notarize or Apostille the degree again. All this is true for your other documents as well. On the other hand, if you are using a good immigration helper, they usually do the translations for you, included in a package price. I hope that answer helped you a bit. Even Mexico and Brazil had lockdowns, but the countries were open at all times. In Paraguay, during the lockdown, you were not allowed to enter, unless you had a residency or citizenship.

@@66wow99 we did not yet have a residency in PY during the lockdown that happened all around the world. We got our residency at the beginning of 2021. From what we have heard it depended a lot where you were during that time. In the big cities they implement the same restrictions as everywhere else in the world, but in a lot of smaller communities life continued like always. In early 2021, when we were there, they tried to implement a one week lockdown but nobody cared. Life as always. In the following episode of this video we talk about how there was a riot in Asuncion because people wanted to go back to normal. That set the government back and ever since then there has never been an attempt to do a lock down again.

Paraguay is stable, very little foreign debt and welcoming to immigrants. Would not be my first choice. I love Sea or Mountains. My favourite countries are Colombia, Ecuador. Central America is beautiful, but can be dangerous in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, but it is so very beautiful. I love the Caribbean coastal areas. That is why I own a 52 ft catamaran, which I keep in the Caribbean, My winter home. No packing,unpacking, go where I want, leave when I'm bored, anchor anywhere. It's great. But you 2 are still young, there is much to see by Land and Sea. We had a young Canadian, " Iohan Gueorguiev " who bike packed from Alaska to Argentina. His videos of his journey are incredible. You can find them on RUclips, under his name.

@@guenthermichaels5303 thanks for all the advice. Yea we are still traveling around and trying to find our permanent place. Next stop BRAZIL. The boating idea is also great. I lived on a 33 foot sailboat in Florida for a few months. I enjoy that part. More about it in one of our later episodes when we stay on a catamaran in Rio.

The 5000 usd are a deposit and you will get it back after your residency process is completed. The official costs of the application are around 300 USD. It depends on your family situation and how many extra documents you need. The official process can be hard to manage when one doesn’t speak Spanish well. It is doable within a few weeks of work. Then your residency cards will be ready in 8 months. If you hire a immigration helper, that will cost you around 1200 usd but your initial work in paraguay will be just a day or two and if you go for VIP treatment for another 800 USD then you can get all your official residency process within 6 weeks instead of 8 months. @@junejames4606 it is true, there is many scammer in Paraguay. Especially when you just arrived, it seems like you will be a big target for people to make money off of you. Like we mentioned in the video, it has been the case that people tried to take advantage of us as well. After some time in the country, you will get to know the culture a bit better and will be able to handle things a bit smoother. You will have to weigh the positives and negatives of trusting certain people. It won‘t be possible to get your residency and your life started in a new country without trusting anyone. Sometimes for us it is already and improvement to find someone that we know will rip us off less than others. This is just how things are here. As for the welcomes towards foreigners, we generally had lots of positive experiences and haven’t heard much of discrimination against foreigners. To be honest though we haven’t met anyone in the country of Indian decent, so we can’t talk about experience here. @@HaveYourADVENTURE Unfortunately I was a victim, hence I am speaking from a nasty experience. They were using me, to practice something evil on my head. Immigration was very aware of this. I paid an Attorney a lot of money for the paperwork. He did not lift a finger to help. Avoided my calls as well. I was stuck there for more than a year during lockdown. Worse experience of my life. I am still in recovery. They were using Something (VIRTUAL) to fondle me and touch me inappropriately! Horrific experience!!!!!!!! Insults +++++. Hence I believe it was a racist attack. I must admit that there are also very good, humble Paraguayans.

Its not a big deal damage of the suitcase. It Can happend even in Europe airports. People nowdays Make noise about everything .
in Europe my luggage was delayed for a few days. Every day the airline gave me an allowance of 100 euros to buy new things. I got compensated for about 400 euros for a delay in luggage. With Copa Airlines i had to wait months before people even acknowledged that my new suitcase was damaged. - If you decide to create a product or service and you damage something in the process, it’s a no brainer, that you have to compensate for that. It’s the mentality that counts. And Copa Airlines mentality screams, “we don’t give a f*** about you!”
One big mistake: Guaraní is not a Spanish dialect, rather it's an indigenous language of South America. Paraguay is very unique here in all of Latin America where an indigenous language has such importance.
Yes very true. Paraguay is the country in the world with the highest percentage of people knowing and speaking the original native language. Over 70% of the people do so. That’s why the Spanish in Paraguay has a very strange accent. Not the best place for Spanish armatures like us 😆
