I’m using Bernat Blanket Big yarn with a size T hook. Single crochet stitches are almost 1.5 inches wide. It’s also a good inch thick. I’m making several machine wash thick rugs for my house because my floors are cold as hell in winter. For my central hallway, I’m using 7 shades that go from black, through grays, to white. The rug is only 21 stitches wide. I’ve already made 2 kitchen mats with shades of blue. The yarn is Super Bulky weight, #6. Honestly I think it should be a 7/8, because I’ve seen other yarns that were size 6 but noticeably thinner. This yarn is about as big around as my thumb.
I started a baby blanket (X- Large) using this yarn, before I saw this video. I have used this yarn before, crocheted a basket and a bed for my cats. I also knit a baby blanket. I have a go-to KNIT C2C blanket and had a special request for this yarn. I knit ONE skein using 2 sizes larger needles than suggested and it was killing my hands. It has been 3 years since I knit the first one and I knew after one skein that I was not going to finish it. I found a RUclips video using the half DBL, crochet stitch thru the space between the stitches instead of into the stitches. I love it. I am on skein 5 and so ready to be done with it. I would have used single crochet, because I don’t want babies fingers and toe going thru the holes, but I thought it would be too heavy for a newborn!
The single crochet stitch looks nice for that blanket. 😊 For my hooks that only have the "mm" measurement on them, I write the "letter" with a permanent marker. I then brush over it with Krazy glue so it doesn't rub off. 😊
Just finishing a blanket with the extra. I used a double crochet for 5 rows and then 1 row of single crochet in a contrast color. Beautiful but weights a ton. Not a portable project. No holes due to fluffy yarn.
I have been pulling my hair out for 3 days now trying to find a stitch that will work with this yarn and my blanket…aaahhh the frustration. I will NEVER buy this yarn again, the only stitch that looks defined in any way is the SC…which is not what I had in mind for my blanket. Thankfully I did find that doing SC then using the back loop only for second row on gives the blanket a little more pizazz. Thanks for the video and letting me know I’m not alone in my quest with this yarn.
June 10, 2020 You’re a trouper! The blanket I’d done, and it I’d immense🥁🥁🥁. I can’t believe you preserved...but you did, and we are all proud of you👍👍
I like doing a v stitch with the blanket yarn. I also drape the large blanket between my thighs (eeek) and let all the extra just hang in the floor. Kinda tricky only keeping the working edge in my lap but it works! Hope that helps...
The Bernat Blanket Extra looks a bit like the Mainstays superbulky/jumbo chenille yarn at Walmart (although I'd have to see both side-by-side to be sure of that). I've never used either of those yarns yet, although now I have a few fat hooks which can handle jumbo yarns. I used to own a Boye Q hook like that, and it seemed to drag at the yarn. The Clover Amour Q hook is far better. Alternatively, get an inexpensive 15mm/Q bamboo hook from Amazon.com; they're pretty lightweight for such a large hook, and are usually smooth enough not to snag yarn. (If there are rough bits, an emery board or nail file will take care of that, or sandpaper if you have it.)
That big hook is the best when working with the super bulky. It is a Q. I hold it the same way and i really don’t get fatigued. But YES you will get to a place where you are overwhelmed with this blanket ! Just keep your eye on the prize and remember how warm & cozy you will be snuggled up underneath it ♥️
I got 12 skeins of the bernat blanket big, and I planned to finger knit a king sized blanket with it. I haven’t mastered the crochet or knitting with needles yet.
Hi Summer! I have to say, I agree with your husband! I love the look of the single crochet! That is going to be beautiful when you get it completed! Anxious to see the finished blanket!! Good luck! 🤗
Nice...I have the Clover type hooks and love them. Just using the Bernard baby blanket yarn for the first time and find I prefer using my aluminum Boye hook with this yarn. Feels less bulky.
I used the Moss Stitch, aka linen Stitch, and several other names, with the Bernat blanket yarn, and if you check, you will find a pattern for the Hibernation Blanket. Basically, it's the moss stitch, and I used 3 different colors, and made stripes of varying widths. I live in Florida, and this was a gift for my niece who lived with me then. She loved it, because she could use it year round. The little spaces, or "holes" makes it where it's not too hot, and it's heavy, (because super bulky), so it is soothing like a weighted blanket. Just a suggestion. Cindy S
So I’m ADDICTED to Bernat Baby Yarn. I tried the EXTRA and it fell apart while I was crocheting! (There’s a technical term for that that I can’t remember right now). So I stick to my bernat baby. Super soft and much lighter than bernat “blanket”. Nice video. Thanks for the tips though !
Hi - this was very helpful! I bought this yarn to make a blanket for my Husband for Christmas and was trying to decide on a stitch to use. Looks like it will work up quick since the yarn and hook are so big. I like the single crochet too ... more uniform for me but i'm doing alternating colors based on my Husband's favorite teams ... Miami Dolphin's and NY Mets. I crocheted a red heart to attach in the center after i'm done. Fingers crossed it turns out the same as I'm picturing in my mind. Thanks again and take care Kris K from CT
Great video, summer, thanks for sharing. I left with my mom my king size rainbow blanket, it's all hdc and using 4 weight yarn, Ive been working on it for years. Crazyness
I'm just finishing a blanket for my daughter. It is made of "Cover Story" bought at JoAnn's. The yarn is just like the Blanket Extra. I used an N hook, single crochet in the front loop. Instead of a chain and turn at the end of the row, I did a double crochet and turned. Then began again with the single crochet in the front loop in the second stitch. This keeps edges the same and straight and no gaps on the outside edges. I'd include a picture, but I'm not at home, where the blanket is.
Thank you soooo much for this info😁 I didn't get this yarn initially because I had no idea what stitch would be possible so I didn't purchase it😞 I'm new to crochet & really only know a couple stitches. Thank you because my mom loved the idea of a throw with this yarn. Great video. Hope your arm feels better soon. Have a blessed day.
Thanks for sharing! I have that same hook and had my hubby engrave the size on it. But I have the Clovers now and that's what I'll use next time. And it will get super heavy and hot before you're done!
I’ve used the regular bernat blanket to make a rug for my kids’ playroom. My son loves things with texture. The middle is hdc rows alternating with rows of hdc bobbles after every six hdc. The border is crossed dc. It’s a lot of fun to rub feet on it. The fabric it makes is thick and would probably be quite a heavy blanket but it’s great as a rug! I don’t know if the extra would make bobbles but it would be interesting to try it out.
I am working on a very large blanket with Bernat Blanket and am to the point where it is difficult because it is huge! It is a full size, I can't imagine doing a king size! I am alternating 4 rows of single crochet and 3 rows of half double crochet. I have used 6 skeins and had to order 2 more.
Wish I saw this earlier .I just did a blanket in stitch studio sweet dream..double crochet but back loop only so it has a ridge..have fun.i did a queen size in super saver years ago in a wave stitch...very heavy towards the end.
I've recently made 3 blankets with Bernat yarn, two blanket yarns and one velvet yarn--which was only a travel sized blanket--one of the other two was a bedspread sized blanket--made for my youngest who LOVES that she can stick her toes through it lol The third (and second twin sized) blanket was for my Mom, who also loves the looser weave(?) I did all three using corner to corner, which meant I didn't have to count. :) I used an ergonomic N hook. But now my Dad wants one for when they get their new queen sized bed...and my hubby wants one for ours--and he's like your hubby, he doesn't like "holes". LOL
Love it! With the half double and single combo, if you were using two colors it ends up looking like hounds tooth, I used a thinner yard and made a sunglasses case with that stitch and I Love it! And Yes, You will end up with Crocheting that blanket on Your Lap and then in your bed finishing it for sure! Been there and done that! LOL It will be so satisfying when you're done though, I Love the Color! Thanks for Sharing! XX Marie-Wisconsin
Summer men don’t think like us lol 😂 my husband is exactly the same way , no holes ! I like all the stitches, but the single crochet is more uniform . It’s going to be worthwhile and gorgeous when done 🌹♥️
I made me a LARGE blanket with Bernat yarn on a loom it came out real good I have so much YARN I HAD TO GO BACK TO STAPLES AND BUY ME ANOTHER BELLA LOL I LOVE BUYING YARN AND I LOVE LOOM KNITTING YES YES THANK YOU JESUS
Moss stitch is a single crochet chain one. Then single crochet go into the space made by the chain. The blanket is going to be heavy by the end rows. Should be extra nice to sleep under.
Good luck on finishing your blanket. I have made several blankets that fit a double size bed. It does take a long time but it is worth in in the end. I don't like hooks that aren't labeled. I have some, but seldom use them because I don't know what size they are
Hey Summer, I realized I had bought that same plastic hook pkj from Walmart a long time ago and remembered I had marked the size in sharpie on the flat bottom. Well it took some searching lol but I found it ... it's size 15.5mm. Btw Love yr vids while I hook away ;) Donna
I went to walmart this weekend to try to find that hook, to double check the size, and they didn't have it there. Sheeesh...I didn't know I bought it so long ago! Thanks for letting me know...I think I am going to write on the hook with a sharpe.
Oh girl, I started a king size afghan with a 6-bulky yarn using the linked treble crochet stitch. It seems to be going pretty well. It's a wide pass with the treble.😁
Hi Summer. The hook is a Q. I have one just like it. I took a permanent marker and put the letter on the bottom so I would know the size. I've never used it, haha. Can't wait to see the finished product.
I would try the Suzette stitch, sc dc in every other ch across end with sc, ch 1 turn; sc dc in each sc across ending with sc in last. It doesn’t have holes in it. Bag O Day, demonstrates this stitch on a wash cloth.
That's exactly what I'm doing! Except I'm using Bernat Blanket Twist yarn. I chose the basket weave stitch specifically because there are no large holes/spaces!
I accidentally learned how to crochet by doing a single crochet back loops only and they’re aren’t any holes. I didnt know that you were supposed to go through both loops to traditionally crochet. Is SC BLO a basket weave pattern?
I like the single crochet stitch the best. I also like to do a single crochet, back loops only stitch. It was the very first stitch that I learned. I tend to about 4 mm larger than is suggested. Maybe it’s just my tension. In the regular Bernat blanket yarn, I like to use a 12 mm hook because the 10 mm didn’t give me as distinct of a pattern as I’m wanted (single crochet BLO). I was wondering if I should then use an S hook, rather than a Q for the Bernat Extra yarn. For my second blanket, I think I want to use a single stitch.
Good morning Summer, I made a pillow with the Bernat blanket yarn for my Grandaughter and it turned out very nice, I will send you a picture, your blanket looks great, Enjoy your day!
I like the single crochet,,, but here in Mississippi that blanket would burn us up,,, 😂 but I really like the yarn... I wish you good luck but as fast as you crochet you will get that thing done in record time...keep hookin girl,, love your videos...
Here in wisconsin, we need blankets like this in car with us in the winter! haha we have weather sometimes that could freeze us to death! haha I have used 3.5 balls and it doesn't fit into my large joann's bag...so now it is under the bed!
Thank you for the comparison! I was so confused and getting them mixed 😫 .. I accidentally bought chunky, extra and the other. All for one blanket..oops
I’m working with this Extra yarn now and it’s frustrating! I’m using a Susan Bates Crystalites P hook and I think even this is too small. I can’t wrap my working yarn around my fingers like I normally would because the texture doesn’t allow it to slide through my fingers and my yarn tension ends up way too high. I’m doing double crochet and there are no holes; it’s so tight!
You toght me something today, I thought the Bernat Blanket Extra was just a bigger skein of the Bernat Blanket. (duh me! ) I made a throw with the blanket yarn last winter, I did HDC camel stitch. I like a more basic stitch with a bulky yarn, Can't wait to see your finished blanket!
I have been making a blanket for my son in black chenille by Bernat in single crochet too! I made one for my granddaughter in light blue with a ruffle around it, and she loves it!!! It is very warm!! I used size N hook and it works up great. I can't believe how thick that yarn is that you are using!! Love the gray color too!! Can't wait to see it when you finish it!! Are you putting a border on it? Good luck with it and I'm sure you'll be finished with it before you know it!!!! Have fun!!! 💕💗
I really like the single crochet stitch. It really shows how nice the yarn looks to me!
I agree. I liked the single stitch best too.

I just purchased some Bernat and was trying to decide which stitch would be best. Thank you for showing the swatches. I like the single crochet.

I'm currently working on one too. I'm doing a single crochet and double in the same stitch. It's coming out gorgeous!
I picked up some of that yarn over the Black Friday sales, thanks for this because it helps to know which stitch looks like what.
I like the single crochet better, no holes and it dose look fuller ,
I like the half double crochet best, and the single crochet second.
My sympathies in handling such a huge project.
Just finishing a blanket with the extra. I used a double crochet for 5 rows and then 1 row of single crochet in a contrast color. Beautiful but weights a ton. Not a portable project. No holes due to fluffy yarn.
You are awesome and your hubby is gonna love the finished product. Keep the videos coming

I’m with your husband... I think the single crochet looks the best.
I like the neat appearance of the single crochet. The others look like more of a jumble.
It looks great Summer! Thanks for showing the difference between the 2 yarns. Much appreciated!
I made a king size and I used very large rubber bands kept adding them as it grew and crocheted away for months haha .
Looks awesome I made one also single crochet but I couldn’t with the hook and I finger crocheted it came out cool
Single crochet looks better then the other two. But wow that’s gonna be a big blanket.
The Bernat Blanket Extra looks a bit like the Mainstays superbulky/jumbo chenille yarn at Walmart (although I'd have to see both side-by-side to be sure of that). I've never used either of those yarns yet, although now I have a few fat hooks which can handle jumbo yarns.

i made that blanket for my queen size bed in double crochet, I love it. I wash I had sone it in HDC but your SC looks good too,

am currently making a chunky blanket with ripple stitch. it's kinda cool but this has given me more ideas. I'm using a 20 hook. huge
That is a lovely blanket that you are making Summer. Feel for you with the arm work though. It will be worth it when you see the end result.
I use a size 12 or 14 crochet, got them on Amazon. That yarn is a pain but makes really nice and squishy binkies 😀
Love it! With the half double and single combo, if you were using two colors it ends up looking like hounds tooth, I used a thinner yard and made a sunglasses case with that stitch and I Love it! I agree with your husband. I like the single stitch best.
I like the single crochet best !
I have this yarn. It is very soft, but not what I expected!
Summer men don’t think like us lol 😂 my husband is exactly the same way , no holes ! I like all the stitches, but the single crochet is more uniform . It’s going to be worthwhile and gorgeous when done 🌹♥️
I like using the marshmallow stitch with this yarn as well!!! I made my granddaughter a blanket with that stitch.
hmmm, what is a marshmellow stitch? Sounds yummy! hehe
Trouble with using sc is that it is not only tiresome, but a bigger yarn eater 😢. Thanks for the informative video.
Which stitch is most time and yarn-efficient? So far, I have done SC, SC BLO, and HDC BLO. I’m a beginner, so I’m slowly learning.
I made me a LARGE blanket with Bernat yarn on a loom it came out real good I have so much YARN I HAD TO GO BACK TO STAPLES AND BUY ME ANOTHER BELLA LOL
I LOVE BUYING YARN AND I LOVE LOOM KNITTING YES YES THANK YOU JESUS
I have a hard time using just the blanket yarn and found moss stitch drapes really well.
Moss stitch is a single crochet chain one. Then single crochet go into the space made by the chain. The blanket is going to be heavy by the end rows. Should be extra nice to sleep under.
I’m doing one currently with the Alpine stitch. I love it however it is a bit slower to do the the speed I normally crochet
Hdc makes the snuggllliest blanket with small holes. my fav is hdc by far also the blue hook is a 15mm P hook.
I like the single crochet in that yarn.
Good luck on finishing your blanket. I have made several blankets that fit a double size bed. It does take a long time but it is worth in in the end. I don't like hooks that aren't labeled. I have some, but seldom use them because I don't know what size they are
who else was focused on the hat behind her? I love it
i did it's so pretty i wish i could crochet like that
Hi Summers, It's looks beautiful I like it never tried working with thick yarn but look awesome happy crocheting 😍👍💖👏 good job 😍
Thicker Yarn is Awesome 😃😄 !
such great info,, thanks so much (wish I could have seen how you are crocheting tho)
Yup yr right, it was a very long time ago, I found it in a stash with old hooks, I think it came with a big white one in the pkj.
Hey! Sweet pea! Thanks for these suggestions of stitches to use with that yarn.
Hello Dee! Great job at Llama Mama's Kayla's games! I can't wait to join you in another live!
that is what I call INSTANT GRATIFICATION!
Wow... your arm is going to be so pumped up once you're done with this blanket 😘👍😘
that's right! I shoudl learn to crochet with the left too, so I can even my arms out!
I love watching your videos.
Hello Summer! That blanket is going to be beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
I agree with your hubby...like the single crochet stitch the best..it looks closed and clean. Just my opinion
The moss stitch I was refering too is half double and slip stitch alternating. I have also heard it called the linen stitch and the granite stitch.
Thanks, Summer. I dont think I will be using that big yarn. My arm couldn't take it but I sure like what you are making. 😊
That is working up into a Beautiful blanket!
Oh girl, I started a king size afghan with a 6-bulky yarn using the linked treble crochet stitch. It seems to be going pretty well. It's a wide pass with the treble.😁
I used an "L" hook and alternate 1 row double crochet and 1 row half double. I like the result.
And the blue blanket washed up beautifully!!! 💕
Love the color and stitch
Summer, I have a size P and Q Boye hook and mine are clearly marked in the groove of hook.
I agree with your husband!! Single crochet is the one I would do!!
Hi Summer. The hook is a Q. I have one just like it. I took a permanent marker and put the letter on the bottom so I would know the size. I've never used it, haha. Can't wait to see the finished product.
Thank you! I headed over to walmart to see what it was labeled in the packaging and they didn't have it! so thank you thank you thank you!!!!
I would try the Suzette stitch, sc dc in every other ch across end with sc, ch 1 turn; sc dc in each sc across ending with sc in last. It doesn’t have holes in it. Bag O Day, demonstrates this stitch on a wash cloth.
Thanks for the video! Very helpful info:)
You should do a blanket with that yarn in a basket weave pattern. It’s really easy looks great and there’s no holes!
@@haja225 I believe it's a Fisherman's ribbed stitch. If you search Fisherman's crochet chunky blanket there's a tutorial on it.
The waffle stitch would be really pretty and it wouldn't have holes either. :)
That is going to be incredibly warm!
we need it (with the polar vortex freezing weather here)
Good morning Summer, I made a pillow with the Bernat blanket yarn for my Grandaughter and it turned out very nice, I will send you a picture, your blanket looks great, Enjoy your day!
I am ready to take a break! haha I need to get it done before the summer is here! I would love to see your pillow!
Summer, I thought working with the regular Bernat blanket was hard, can only imagine the thicker stuff Evan harder. Good luck getting it finished.
I like the single crochet,,, but here in Mississippi that blanket would burn us up,,, 😂 but I really like the yarn... I wish you good luck but as fast as you crochet you will get that thing done in record time...keep hookin girl,, love your videos...
Here in wisconsin, we need blankets like this in car with us in the winter! haha we have weather sometimes that could freeze us to death! haha
I have used 3.5 balls and it doesn't fit into my large joann's bag...so now it is under the bed!
Sarah Bruehl try a clover 15mm, it’s way easier. I made an alpine blanket with it and it turned out amazing!
Nadine, here in Texas too! But lovely yarn! I like the single or half double
It's too dense.
You need a bigger hook size.
That's why it's straining your arm.
It will save some yarn too.
It will be lighter to work on too.
spikefivefivefive what size do you recommend
@@stamac4335 - For the yarn she's using, at least an S or bigger.
Great video! It’s nice to see how that yarn works up, I was curious! Love your channel! 🧶
Have fun!!! 💕💗
This will look fab when finished.xxx
