"Blockbuster Video offers a great selection of restricted movies inappropriate for viewers under 17, and provides computerized enforcement. You decide what kind of videos you want to watch, and Blockbuster Video enforces your wishes." -Neil Cicierega, Mouth Moods
I miss Blockbuster, they always had great variety and I got introduced to some great stuff through there. I miss the Video Store setting, the internet's nice but it takes the fun out of traveling somewhere. I always wanted to work at my local Blockbuster but it closed last year, it was sad. It been there since 1990 or so.
None of this would've happened if Blockbuster had simply agreed to work with Netflix rather then compete with them. Nintendo made the same mistake when they cut off their deal with Sony in favor of the Phillips CDI. For Sony they would absolutely destroy Nintendo in console sales, while Nintendo ended up with the RUclips Poop memes.
Man, watching this shit brings back memories. I used to work there from '98-'01. Paid pretty crappy but it was the most chill job I ever had in my life. We all got along and were friends outside of work, and we used to have the most epic Blockbuster parties you can imagine. I remember coming in many a Monday night to set the New Release wall for the morning completely trashed, they'd go to put the tapes out the next morning and they'd be like "What the hell was he smoking last night?" LOL
It looks like the footage was shot about late 1987/early 1988, seeing how Spaceballs, The Chipmunk Adventure and Crocodile Dundee were new releases at the time.
I also laugh at the idea of historians from the year 2447 finding relics like this and successfully identifying it as coming from the 1980's based on the actors' ridiculously big hairdos.
@eyeh8nbc The one near my house ironically turned into another video store, and one that has more historical nostalgia for me in particular, "Sight & Sounds". My mom was a member with them back in the early 80's. The reason for that is that the building was owned by the same who operated the ma & pa store before Blockbuster moved into the building so he just let them lease it for those years they were there and now he's running things again!
I like the idea of Blockbuster giving you a dinky little checklist card. Makes me feel like a bad undisciplined Blockbuster member if I'm too lazy to use it. :C
Blockbuster wasn't in my town yet when they had these tapes- if they were I would've rented and copied them. They did have a huge selection compared to the other stores, but I hated how they charged you for 3 days even if you only needed a movie 1 day. $3 was the new-release price at most stores, I could rent old movies at other stores for $1.50-$2. I remember that "Special $2 Rental" sticker they had on some- "Rent this for the price we should've charged in the first place!"
Maybe if Netflix didn't get in the way of competition, Blockbuster would've still been active (Netflix and internet streaming in general WAS one of the reasons why Blockbuster is mostly dormant).
It's a shame that we don't have video rental stores anymore. Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+, and everything else won't ever come close to this. Not even RedBox does.
@ToastmachineIdiot A local TV station in my town had the same character generator they often use for pointless stuff like "T-STORM WARNING" and the usual call letter watermarks.
brad you missed possibly the greatest decade of human existence. the 80's was a comicbook. it was colorful, everyone had over the top personalities, and unlimited amounts of grape soda.
0:16 If that The Chipmunk Adventure sign goes up on eBay, I swear it will get millions of dollars like $300,000,000 (kinda like the price of a 35mm movie on eBay)
I also have two Products i found in a retail store that came from Blockbuster The importance of being Donald on vhs and Duke Nukem Zero hour on N64 i also have a couple more that came from Hollywood Video Micro Machines on N64 and All about the Benjamins on D.V.D
in my country Ecuador Blockbuster opened in 1995 but was present until due to piracy of movies Blockbuster disappeared in my country in February 2004 :(
1:51 if you're here from the neil cicierega "song"

We’re now down to one Blockbuster location here in America located in the heart of Bend, Oregon.
Fire Dust Netflix offered themselves for sale to Blockbuster in 2000; Blockbuster declined, and sealed their fate.

2:29 that tape glitch scared the crap out of me
**insert ultra-sad-sounding Sarah McLachlan tribute song here** :'(

+Sir Stewart Wallace As much as Lady LovelyLocks. I remembered going to one in League City and getting a few VHS tapes.
Brandon Reina it also explains the then-current Walt Disney Home Video logo at 2:06.
What I wouldn't give for just an hour of browsing through a Blockbuster again 😢
Go to Bend, Oregon. That’s where the only Blockbuster is. You just buy the plane ticket.
It's hard to believe Blockbuster's going out of business...
There’s only 1 Left in Bend, Oregon.
It's not hard to believe, really -- video rental stores were going to phase out eventually...Blockbuster had no real plan after that.
Thank you Blockbuster, and thank you Neil Cicierega!
it was a very colourful, bright decade with awesome music and films/tv/computer consoles, mobile fones[the brick lol]pagers etc

That's one gorgeous text font.
The text that says "look for our rental sticker"?
Ah, renting videos..
A past time young people today will never know.
Well, they just won't know the video stores, but they might know of renting from Redbox or Amazon Prime digital rental
I wasnt alive during all this
gotta love the late 80s version of queue'ing movies

2:28 "We'll brrrAAAAPP forward to seeing you soon."
The clerk hands the bag of videos directly across the counter to the happy family. No sensormatic security beeping thing at that store I guess.

by that point we'll jsut be downloading movies into our mind.
Computerized enforcement of rentals to those under 17. So between the first and second movies the terminator was working at blockbuster.
Maybe if Netflix didn't get in the way of competition, Blockbuster would've still been active (Netflix and internet streaming in general WAS one of the reasons why Blockbuster is mostly dormant).
Andrew Vickers Also, don't forget about RedBox. They also dealt a blow from which the likes of Blockbuster and Movie Gallery couldn't recover from.
It's a shame that we don't have video rental stores anymore. Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+, and everything else won't ever come close to this. Not even RedBox does.

Aaaw that is so handy, I always forget to rent Robocop and Kick Puncher.
Antiques baby
I want that alvin sign soooooooooooo bad
That Is A Music From There Goes A Bus!
*_computerized enforcement_*
the movies came with a free piece of paper. Holy shit cow, mind explosion.
brad you missed possibly the greatest decade of human existence. the 80's was a comicbook. it was colorful, everyone had over the top personalities, and unlimited amounts of grape soda.

IT's sad they're going out of business now. Can't imagine there being no Blockbusters around!
It really is a shame.
