Thanks for the awesome tutorial! We have a rescue pup we adopted 8 years ago and we have always used a Martingale collar for him. We just adopted a puppy and she's needs her own Martingale collar. I think making these is going to become my new obsession lol And I just wanted to say Thelma is beautiful! I had one that was my mother's, she was a workhorse of a machine. Unfortunately I no longer have her, but some day I hope to get another one.
Omg best tutorial ever!!! You are amazing, thank you very much!! I rather make myself a collar for my puppy than buy it, it’s more special. God bless you ❤️❤️
Thank you so much, I make paracord collars with the martingale pieces and a single chain piece is 10$ this is so helpful and now I can make my own for just the cost of hardware
Thelma is beautiful! Great tutorial. I’ve made buckle collars for a few years but wanted to venture into martingales. Your video was super clear and helpful!
Thelma was my first VSM (vintage sewing machine) and is the least picky about thread, she just plows through without a care! I'm happy you liked the video!
I'm sorry, I do not have that tutorial. I sew over 100 collars a month for the rescue. It is quicker for me to start with patterned polyester webbing. Bonus, it is washable and doesn't smell when it gets wet when dogs go for a swim.
THANK YOU :) this tutorial is wonderful, easy to follow and very clear instructions. My Greyhound Molly with hopefully have a new collar soon thanks to you
Fabulous video! thank you. I look forward to making my own. Can you tell me what neck size the small, extra small and your smedium fit. thank you!! And do you have these instructions for purchase anywhere in readable form?
The Extra Small fits neck sizes 9" - 12", the Small fits 11" - 15", and if I had to guess I would say my Smedium fits in between those two so 13"-18". Written instructions is a great idea. But right now I do not have them.
I'm happy you like the video! The large collar is made from 1" wide webbing and requires a 12" and a 29" length of webbing. It fits dogs neck sizes 18" - 26".
The small size requires 9” and 19” pieces of webbing and fits dogs with 11”-15” necks. The xsmall uses 8” and 17” length of webbing and fits dogs with 9”-12” necks. I only use 2.5” of overlap when stitching the small loop.
Can you clarify how much of the overlap you're stitching in the first step - is it about half of the 3"? BTW, love your Thelma - I have several vintage Singers as well, and they're wonderful for this type of work!
Thelma, the 1948 Singer 15-91 used in this video, is a work horse. Being gear driven (no belt) with a heavy hand wheel she does like to keep going, and on those small collars is a challenge. I try to go slow and use my hand on the hand wheel to start and stop. You may find a Pfaff 30 easier to use, it has a lighter weight hand wheel and a 1.3 amp motor which makes up for the lighter handwheel. The Pfaff 30 starts easier and stops on a dime. Thank you, I've been sewing for longer than I like to admit!
Love your video! Very easy to follow along! What size webbing and lengths do you use for the xtra large collars? And do you use 1” webbing for the extra small and small as well?
Yes, nylon webbing can be used instead of polyester. I have not made a collar from fabric alone. But fabric may be sewn on top of nylon to add a decorative pattern to the collar.
Hi Sanne, 20 cm is roughly 7.87 inches so going by the chart on Country Brook Designs website the size collar you would want to make is the "Mini" size. The small look is 6" and the large loop is 12". This chart can be found here: www.countrybrookdesign.com/how-to/collars/how-to-make-a-martingale-collar Have Fun!
When looking to purchase a sewing machine to sew webbing, I would bring both the thread and webbing with you and try it out. The thread will require you to adjust both the upper and lower tension. I use #69 thread and polyester webbing. I've found that a Singer 15-91 sews it very well. I also have a Necchi BU Mira that does a good job on it as well.
With my Singer 15-91 I use Tex 70 also can be listed at #69 Nylon thread. Polyester would work too. I use either a Jeans 110/18 needle or Topstitch 100/16 needle. You will need to adjust the bobbin tension when going to this weight thread. If you will be switching your machine between sewing collars and other projects, consider picking up another bobbin so you can make the transition quicker. You can also pick up a bobbin tension gauge at the Featherweight shop online. The bobbin tension I use on my Singer 15-91 is 33-35 grams. Happy sewing!
Hay más de 7000 idiomas en el mundo y, lamentablemente, solo conozco uno de ellos. Mi mejor consejo es que hagas una búsqueda de lo que te gustaría aprender e incluyas español.
This is the third instructional video on martingale collars I've watched. Yours is the best by far. You're a great teacher.
Thank you so much!
This is so helpful. Cheers from a volunteer at Oakland Animals Services

I love that machine! I'm making dog collars on my 1959 Singer ! The green machine!
you've made me understand how to make one without confusing. Thankyou so much !!
Great tutorial! Love Thelma. I also sew on a vintage Singer, a 1947 201-2. Awesome machines!

I'm sure he looks wonderful! Nice work!
Your editing is very impressive
Thank you!!!
Wonderful tutorial, thank you! Do you have a tutorial for making these martingale collars from fabric covered webbing?
I'm sorry, I do not have that tutorial. I sew over 100 collars a month for the rescue. It is quicker for me to start with patterned polyester webbing. Bonus, it is washable and doesn't smell when it gets wet when dogs go for a swim.
Thanks im geting a borzoi puppy soon so this was really helpful
Thank you for this video! One question - what size neck does a Medium, Large and XL fit? I'm not sure which to make for my dogs.
Hi Amber, the Medium size fits 13"-16", a large fits 16"-22", and the Extra Large fits 18"-26". You're very welcome for the video!
THANK YOU :) this tutorial is wonderful, easy to follow and very clear instructions. My Greyhound Molly with hopefully have a new collar soon thanks to you

Great video! You have inspired me to make my own. Thank you for the tutorial!
You're very welcome!
Thank you for this video, very easy to follow along! What are the measurements of the webbing for a large dog dollar?
I'm happy you like the video! The large collar is made from 1" wide webbing and requires a 12" and a 29" length of webbing. It fits dogs neck sizes 18" - 26".

What would be the cut web lengths for XS and small. Great video.
The small size requires 9” and 19” pieces of webbing and fits dogs with 11”-15” necks. The xsmall uses 8” and 17” length of webbing and fits dogs with 9”-12” necks. I only use 2.5” of overlap when stitching the small loop.

How do you even work that sewing machine?? I tried to work a WHITE model 1418 and I could not do it!! Really good sewing!

also melt the end of your webbing that you cut from to stop that from fraying also
I might do this
Love your video! Very easy to follow along! What size webbing and lengths do you use for the xtra large collars? And do you use 1” webbing for the extra small and small as well?
I just updated the video description to include webbing sizes and the dog neck size each collar will fit.
Me again, when you're making the loop around the slider or the other part of the martingale, do you use 1-2", or is it just based on the vibe?
For the box stitch, what are the measurements?
Thankyou😊
Thank you!!! Can I use a wider webbing (2 inches), for a size small? It's for a whippet.
I have not made a collar out of 2 inch webbing, but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to.
Is there any way to create your own designs on polyester webbing?
Cover it with your choice of lightweight cotton woven fabric and stitch it on. You can also sew a patterned ribbon to the outside of the webbing.
If i'm making a small or a large martingale how long should I cut the polyester to be?
Please check the video description, the measurements for different sizes are listed. Thank you.
Perfect😍
Thank you!
Can I replace the polyester with nylon or a different type of webbing and it still work for this color? Or even sew with fabric?
Yes, nylon webbing can be used instead of polyester. I have not made a collar from fabric alone. But fabric may be sewn on top of nylon to add a decorative pattern to the collar.
for a medium size collar, how long does the piece of material have to be? I'm going to try making mine with biothane
For the Medium size collar I use 1" wide webbing, an need a 12" and a 24" piece, the loop overlap I use is 3". Good luck with your collar!
How do You know the lenght You need. I have an Italian greyhound with a verry small neck. Only 20 cm . Can someone help me out thx

i'm planning to buy a familiar sewing machine, but im afraid that doesn't work with that strap because is too thick ? help!!! thanks

what kind of thread do you use? also, do you use a special needle? I have an old machine too.

Is the keeper the same size as the other loops
Hi Megan, The keeper is the same length, but not as wide as the 2 rectangles.
