I graduated from Morehouse College with an economics degree. If you do well in a quantitative intense major there are many opportunities. Walter E. Massey the chairman of the board of directors for Bank of America is a Morehouse graduate. If you graduate in the top 20% of your major then you're almost guaranteed to be recruited to an Ivey League graduate program or a blue chip company. I know several who became multimillionaire both during attendance and after graduation. On average a graduate does well in life whatever they do.

I graduated from an HBCU, Morgan State, in 1966. I was about to enter law school at Howard University when I was drafted into the US Army. I was offered the opportunity to attend OCS, officers school. I graduated as one of two Blacks in a class of 102 new Lieutenants. After the Army, I was recruited into a major NYC advertising agency and then Fortune 100 companies in marketing. Overall, I spent 25 years in corporate America. Finally, I became the CEO of a nonprofit organization for the final 10 years of working. My HBCU education was the catalysis for my success. I was totally prepared, unafraid, motivated, well spoken, and the best dressed. My HBCU finished me like it was an art!!
I am proud to say that I attended an HBCU (Norfolk State University). Norfolk State University, prepared me for the MS I received from Campbell University, the courses I was able to take at East Carolina University, that granted me certification in administration/supervision, and the Ph.D. I received from Capella University. I wouldn't take nothing for that journey!!!

I'm a mechanical engineering PhD student at Howard. I got my bachelor's and master's at a PWI. Prior to applying I earned my engineer license and I have to say the quality of the education is top notch. More than that I feel like I belong which is such a blessing. I'm hoping to one day teach at an HBCU in engineering after using my PhD in Industry

Great video! I will use this for our HBCU programming at my school. However, AA coursework is required at Howard, my alma mater, and I believe it enriches every student's experience.

Proud Hampton University graduate here… GO PIRATES!! I’m in the early stages of introducing my kids to colleges. We have a few HBCU grads in our family… Hampton, Howard, Kentucky State, Bowie State… but I’m certainly going to have my daughters watch this. You did a great job putting this together. Recommended, if college is the option, black American families should attend the highest ranked schools possible, and get skills needed immediately by the highest paying employers.
Get your financial freedom then give back extra wealth to other disadvantaged black American families.
But if you can't get into the high ranking colleges then it's better to go straight to the workforce.
Interesting. That's a beautiful idea! I believe a college education from any reputable college, regardless of the ranking, can still be profitable... unless you aren't interested or it's unnecessary for your intended career.
Hey, im a sophomore in all honors and AP classes but have a 2.7 unweighted gpa and 3.3 weighted gpa I play multiple sports and plan on going to morehouse. any advice?

Hi! I'd say take the most challenging classes you can do well in that relate to the field you're interested in. See where you fit in their freshman admissions profile (www.usnews.com/best-colleges/howard-university-1448). The average GPA of accepted applicants for the class of 2025 was 3.66 (unweighted), so aim for that. They're test optional (except for joint degree programs), so that might be helpful. But if you do really well on the SAT, it could also give you an advantage. Keep up with their events, social media & visit in-person or virtually, so you can be sure that it's what you really want and to see what they offer that's in alignment with your personal passions & goals. Have quality extracurriculars and a compelling essay that enables them to see you fitting in on campus. Consider applying early as well. Lastly, I'd say look into SCHOLARSHIPS at Howard and with other organizations. Tuition is about $33K/ year with room and board being about $16K.

Fayetteville State University & The University of the District of Columbia do. Also, check out these colleges that have partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to fight forest fires: Florida A&M University, Southern University in Louisiana, Tuskegee University and Alabama A&M University.
What would you say for someone who is older but still wants the college experience and wants to attend an HBCU.
Great question. You'll see people there of all ages from 18-50+! There's a place for everyone. So it's never too late. Whether you're starting now, going back to finish or going for your Masters or PhD, GO FOR IT!!

When will HBCU start putting more focus on the US military black personnel. Their target audience is to narrow. As a veteran, I watch rise of online and distance education in many forms, yet we rally see HBCU frequent these spaces. Even with COViD, one would think things would changed. As a black veteran, I would have love for my Montgomery GiBill and Post 9-11 GiBill to go to a HBCU.
Thank you for your comment! You sent me to the history books and it was enlightening! HBCUs actually have a long history of supporting military veterans of color as many black Americans returning from WW2 were denied GI Bill benefits because most colleges (particularly in the South) wouldn't let them. Apparently the clever wording of the GI Bill (drawn up by a known racist) prohibited oversight agencies. Federal oversight would have ensured vets of color received equal benefits to their white counterparts everywhere. Instead, due to racism and persistent formal and informal segregation, HBCUs were often the only option for black veterans. To further complicate things, partial policies by various states ensured HBCUs were underfunded causing them to be overwhelmed by the influx of black military vets. As it stands, HBCUs *continue* to be underfunded, especially when compared to other state schools funded in their same state. To respond to your question, I surmise that they would love to do more to help military vets and increase online opportunities, maybe it's time we help them. I did see that the Military Times ranked Fayetteville State as one of the colleges “Best for Vets” due to the services available at the campus center. Sadly, as you've already pointed out, it was the only HBCU on the list of 86 four-year schools.

@@JourneyWithJordana Thank you madam for your prompt response to my comment. I actually didn’t think I would get a response. But I definitely appreciate it. That was definitely a great article on the history of racism and the GI Bill, I knew of it but not in detail. Thanks again. I wondering will the country’s black lawyers ever come together to sue the Veteran Affairs base on it turning a blind eye to it’s allowed racial practices. That’s a whole other subject though.
But currently my focus is the online and distance education. I have witnessed Troy University literally have grown and expanded very rapidly over the years just off distance education. I mean, when I was in the Army, a lot of PWI schools signed up through the eArmyU program and they made billions, combine of course. But we wasn’t seeing any HBCUs at that time in the early 2000’s when the program started. If HBCUs would stop competing so much with each other and come together and established a distance education infrastructure that all the HBCUs work together with. Truthfully, I think this is one of the things reparations should go to and push better career base programs. I can talk on this subject all day.

@@IAMDPP Morehouse has an online degree program and great ROTC programs. Melvin "Jerry" G. Carter is a brigadier general in the USMC who graduated from Morehouse. It was several alumni who worked under Admiral Roughead that helped establish Africom. Colonel Dave W. Burton USMC also graduated from Morehouse College. Lt Col. Steve Coffee USAF is a Morehouse College graduate. Lt Col. Ronald K. Booker USAF is a Morehouse College graduate. Captain Milton W. Troy, III USN is a Morehouse graduate. Captain Walter C. Mainor USN is a Morehouse College graduate. Commander Bralyn E. Cathey USN is a Morehouse College graduate. Commander Eric Winn is a Morehouse College graduate. Captain Jay Clark went to Morris Brown College and got his commission from Morehouse College ROTC. Lt Col. Patrick Watson USArmy is a Morehouse College graduate. Captain Ashley N. Johnson USAF is a Spelman graduate. Essentially for the size of the AUC it consistently produces Excellent Officers who Excell in their careers. I know several mustang officers who were commission through Morehouse College ROTC. If you're interested in Airforce ROTC there are five HBCU with them. Fayetteville State University, Spelman College, Tennessee State University, Howard University, and Jackson State University. Also other government agencies heavily recruit too and give scholarships at HBCU.
@@kevionrogers2605 Sir, all you have provided is a list of officers that attended HBCUs, which is fine. But the military is not only made up of officers, there are more enlisted personnel than officers. But that’s still not answering the questions of, “why HBCUs are not putting more of their focus on more distance education programs, so they can attract black veterans to their schools after returning from the military.” Morehouse is not the only HBCU in the country.
When I return to Alabama from the Army in 2006, I was looking for a school or university to attend. The choices was limited because not to many schools and universities offered undergraduate distance education options at that time. And even joining the eArmyU program, so black soldiers can have HBCUs as an school option while on active duty. While I was on active duty, I attended the local college (PWI) (night and weekend classes) while stationed at Fort Hood, Tx, under the tuition assistance program. Troy University even had a satellite school in Killeen, Tx. Because as an enlisted soldier, having college is good for promotion and moving up in rank. As a veteran, I had 36 to 48 months of free education under the GiBill funding. I’m simply pointing out how HBCUs are leaving money on the table, PWI schools have programs for veterans. Officers are not the only people in the military that’s seeking an education. Quick question, “Is it better for HBCU’s to put their focus on a student from high school, who have to get approved for funding OR put their focus on black veterans who already have guaranteed funding.”
I’m simply planting the seed, hopefully someone hear me.

So, our first generation college students should attend a school that charges double the cost to attend a state public institution so they can enjoy pledging, the band, and the sauce. What a joke?
