Fun Fact about this game: There’s a secret character relation system that factors into when your Tag Partner will get their rage based on their relationship in the story. If they like each other, the background partner gets rage when you take 50%-40% damage, and if they hate each other, their rage kicks in closer to end of your health. My favorite example is Roger and Marduk because Marduk’s Australian meaning he apparently hates Kangaroos
Good god my tag team was Jun/Asuka or it'll be just as annoying as rage activating at 10% health where most of the meta is "kill them before they kill us"
As "the casual audience" it did absolutely hit and grab me when it came to Wii U. Insane how much I loved that. It's sad more people don't feel the same.
I honestly think this casual BS only comes from online players. Like what if you have the highest Arcade scores? What if you know every detail of the story arcs, what if you platinum trophy the game out. Just because your not a PC streaming online bot doesnt mean you are a casual. It is what it is
@@Jellofreezeit's just a term to differentiate competitive players who play ranked and maybe go to tournaments. If you're not a competitive player you're a casual player, that's how English works.
When I found out the game was coming for Wii U I was so happy you have no idea. The extra modes and Nintendo costumes were really fun. I played that game so much, it was really fun
If you had music stored on your PS3 you could go through and choose that music for the stages. Then each, individual stage could have its own unique music from your playlist. It was truly ahead of its time.
@@waverazor This is why so often Online gaming kills games. The game can be brilliant (like this one) but if the online sucks a number of fans ignore it's brilliance and rate it only based on it's online Something similar has happened with GTA V over time. A lot of people loved the game but then Online got ruined so they changed their opinion to hating the game as a whole. Sad society
@@TeriyakiSasuke the online is what makes the game long term, like you keep playing to improve. And when the game you keep coming back to feels like molasis.. It's gross.. I think I get what you're saying. Like games can't be as flexible to account the online mode, like it has to be fair and added mechanics to make it easier
@@waverazor Yeah I think it's just since I grew up in an era when playing with friends in real life was more of a thing, my favourite memories are playing with real people I know in the same room on the same console. That also helped us all get better. I played a lot of Online and it ranged from people who were decent at the game to no lifers whose gf was Tekken. Who spent 4 or 5 hrs everyday in Practice and then an the rest fighting people online. For me it sometimes took the joy out of the game. Especially by comparison.
@@TeriyakiSasuke earlier games were sooo broken. you can play them now on fightcade. games like xmen vs street fighter is alll infinite combos.. they are fun games though! i think fighting games now are 10x more fun too
Tekken Tag 2 was my introduction to Tekken and one of the reasons I was excited for Tekken 7. I didn't play any online but it was super fun to play with my family and made me enjoy a lot of the characters this series had to offer
Tbh for me I’ve played all of the TAKKEN games except 6 I wasn’t feeling TAKKEN 6 at all but if I choose the MOST rememberable games and SOUNDTRACK it’s takken tag 2 when I was young when I was playing whooping older kids 😂 and I don’t see the problem of learning 2 players I was whooping people butts make them rage quit with my characters. Since I got ps5 I will get a ps3 just to play this game again.
@@Deemo202 I'm sorry I just grew up playing more racing and shooting games. The main fighting games I played as a kid were Soul Cal 2, Bloody Roar Primal Fury, and Naruto Clash of Ninja
Exactly. The customization, amount of combos and character interactions you can discover, being able to personalize music for the first time, couch co-op online matches, Combot. All that's missing is either Tekken Bowl/Force which probably would've been included if the game sold well. If they had actually made Tag 2 more accessible, I would've played it 10x over T7.
I think a non-numbered entry just has that effect, sadly. "Why would I buy this spin off when I could just buy the main entry is on the same console" type of deal. This game should've been ported to PS4/XBone as a launch title for people to give it a chance IMO.
@@w21aaaaa which sucks bc fans would know that tag tournament would be the objectively better game on their respective consoles 🥲 but i cant blame the average consumer since how would they even know that in comparison
@@w21aaaaa Which is funny because I own both Tekken 6 and Tag 2, and I basically see no reason to ever boot up T6 again because Tag 2 is just better in every way, yet I still see a reason to return to T3 and T5DR. T6 is just made kinda obsolete.
Tekken Tag 2 is probably my favorite Tekken game. A fun fact is that they had different covers for international releases of the game. For example, here in Brazil the game was sold with an Eddy + Christie (IIRC) cover with green and yellow colors. They also took the time to get the people with the correct nationality to dub each character - something they kept on future games in the series. It was pretty cool to hear Eddy speaking in Brazilian Portuguese, for example. I have a lot of fond memories of Tag 2 because me and a friend would just tag together and play through the Ghost battle mode or even the Survival mode while customizing our main characters and learning more and more about the game.
The best Tekken game. I'll die on this hill. The sheer amount of unfiltered fun, combo creativity and improbable things that happen in this game we're simply never matched ever again.
Hells yeah, I play this online daily! It's fun asf I went back to tekken 6 and man the graphics look chunky and the fighter are slower. This game is elite
What's everyone's record on Survival mode? Mine is 13 Wins with Dragunov on his own and 10 each with Dragunov teaming with Jin and Heihachi, and with Heihachi on his own.
I believe one of the reasons why the series fell in popularity on Tekken 6 (which extended to Tag 2 as well) is the fact that, for the first time since Tekken 2, the game was no longer at the "bleeding edge" of its platforms in technical terms. This was a time when a lot of Japanese devs struggled to keep up with what the western devs were putting out graphically. Tekken 3 was one of the most impressive games on the PS1, Tag 1 as a launch title for the PS2 was incredible, Tekken 4 and 5 are among the prettiest PS2 games. And then Tekken 6 arrives and looks... antiquated. Long loading times, not that impressive graphics and resolution etc. It was still good looking for a fighting game, but overall felt antiquated, and many gamers were put off by that.
Yep, PS3 era was rough for the JP game industry in terms of tech, its effects can still be seen in recent times where a lot of JP developed games (outside the absolute AAA, and even then) are years behind in fidelity and performance. It's been getting much better though
@@CUTIE_POXX because it was the only Tekken game for a whole decade. It was made on a very tight budget after TTT2 was a commercial failure, which was why it looked like ass compared to pretty much every entry from the PS2-PS3 eras. Plus mutiple waves of updates and DLC, that's how it sold so much.
Which is funny to think about because Tekken 8 has caught up and given that bleeding edge back. The graphics are SUPER good for working in Unreal 5 and the fact it's 1440p at 60fps on PS5 is miracle work.
This had so much content so much stuff in it so many things that bring you back to the other games in the series and even the customization theme is fire........ This was one of my favorite games in the series next to 3 and 5.
Tekken Tag 2 is literally my favorite because of how great the customization feature are... You could even put your own music for the stages and it was AMAZING.
You have no idea how excited i was for this game, I saw it in a game informer, then saw it came out on my birthday in 2012. bought it TWICE and played it absolutely non stop i was so curious and hype for this that I discovered team spooky's channel of Markman coming in to give them an hour worth of demo gameplay and thats when i was hooked on competitive fighting games
Hi Maximilian, I believe one of the main reasons Tekken Tag 2 had low sales is due to insufficient marketing. Back when I played Tekken, platforms like RUclips and the internet weren't readily available for us to discover new games. I was completely unaware of Tekken Tag 2 while playing Tekken 6. It wasn't until two years later that I learned about its existence, and that was only because some friends, playing in a different mall, informed us about Tekken Tag 2. This lack of awareness contributed to the limited sales, and I think better marketing could have significantly improved its success.
This is a good point. I remember having Tekken 6, I sucked at it, I never went online, but I bought it used and loved it casually. I never knew Tag 2 existed till many years later. Wasn't till after Tekken 7 had made me love the franchise again.
Agreed. Game stores (which are all closed right now over here) hardly have TTT2 advertised, nor I see any ads on TV (they love promoting western games only, like Japanese games don't exist except Mario stuff). I only knew about TTT2 when I was in the games club in college and saw a few people playing it.
The greatest gift I received from TTT2 was Dragonov's INCREDIBLE ending; it is SUCH a mood and pretty much represents me and my mindset when trying to assemble anything from furniture, appliances, and even Warhammer niniatures lmao
Dragunov trying to IKEA together an Alisa-unit and failing while not moving a facial muscle... they really ought to give him SOME ruthless moments soon because at this rate him being an adorable stonewall is like ALL the characterization he's got.
Tekken tag 2 is my favorite and Leo and Jin is my main. This game makes tag tournament much more love by making character combinations of team throws and the endings are just as amazing and memorable.
I love this game. The ps3 version was my favorite game on the system. So many memories attached to this game, the match making theme is eerily beautiful. When I got a career I bought a Noir cab and the 369 system board (no kunimitsu hurts). I feel like it deserved longer time in the public.❤
I remember TTT2 was barely marketed/ promoted. I remember like seeing a single cinematic trailer and that was it. Hell, i think the animated movie + TTT2 crossover with devil Jin & Devil Kazuya got more mainstream attention than the base game itself.
@@MauriceisMAD i only remember seeing 1 cinematic trailer, then watching arcade gameplay on RUclips and down the line it popped up on the shelves in the stores. And iirc, the Snoop Dogg thing came down the line with the update that included the rest of he fighters such as Forest, Michelle and Angel
@@falconeshield Interesting. I to remember the talk regarding the Snoop Dogg collab, but I mostly hung at US sites despite being Swedish... maybe they really didn't market it outside the Anglosphere?
This was my introduction to Tekken. I used to be a Street Fighter-only fighter. At the time (2015-2016?) I felt like SF was letting me down a lot. Somehow I randomly came across the TFG Steve Fox compilation on RUclips and I HAD TO learn how to do all of the craziness in that video. I grabbed TT2 and went to the lab every day. It was also a bonding experience for me and my best friend who used to be in the martial arts world. I haven't been fully back into SF since.
i remember when i first discovered Tag 2, i didnt know the game existed!!! I played Tekken 6 but i didnt know they released Tag 2 til some years later and ask myself "How did i miss this!? Where was this!? How did i not see any commercials covering this games existance!?" Man did i have fun when i bought this, i wish i knew about its existance sooner
I always presume everyone into gaming is like me and hang on video game news sites all the time and know almost everything that's releasing... but if they didn't even try to air commercials and reach people outside that that feels like a miss, considering how much they needed this game to sell.
Ngl as a kid I hated it because Tekken 6 felt better to me in every way. Stages, music, visual style, everything made me feel like fighting on a couch with friends and family felt better in tekken 6. Then I actually had insane fun with Scenario Campaign. I really felt no reason to play TTT2 back then
So, I can't wait for Tekken 8, but I still miss Tag 2 so much. My friends and I got into Tekken Revolution on PS3, but we hated the Free to Play mechanics, so we all bought TTT2, and we fell in love with it...we spent so much time learning our characters and customizing. It was our primary game for a couple years. Tag 2 just had so much, the game modes, the roster, the customization.. so a few years later when Tekken 7 came out, I still enjoyed it, but I couldn't help but feel disappointed with the lack of content and the weak customization. I know Tekken 7 "saved" the series, but yeah.. I think starting out with Tag 2 spoiled me.
This Game for me, is the most complete game of the franchise, you got the Tag or single fighters option, huge offline content (wish TEKKEN force or ball appeared), huge roster and a good customization. It could get better but i really like this game. Hope we could get the Game again in the ps store or steam.
Thank you for putting so much respect on Tag 2's name. It is honestly the pinacle of Tekken for me. The mechanics, The unique tag throws, The character interactions, the fact that SEVERAL of the endings changed their art style to suit the character! In terms of Tekken as a piece of media I don't think any other game comes close. Everyone feels so wooden and plastic in Tekken 7. A lot of that personality is gone and it also just feels like the games are trying too hard to take themselves seriously now. Nothing silly like Alex or Mokujin or combot. The best we still have is the bears for a silly little character people just play to have fun. I don't think we'lll Ever have a game with this much personality and energy put into it again.
My favorite Tekken game. I've never spent so much time playing any other fighting game than Tag 2. The amount of care of this game and the presentation is still the best in the series imo. Also, the most banger music in the whole series.
Rushed release and should have marinated a bit longer until PS4 came out maybe it wouldn't have flopped this hard. Gameplay was rock solid if a bit too oppressive in the damage department but that's to be expected with a tag game. Reward for player creativity was through the roof.
@@imfinishedgrinding638 it didn't feel rushed at all. There was no bugs or glitches in Tag 2. The problem was how cheesy and boring the series became after Tekken 5. Tag 2 doubled down on everything we didn't like about Tekken 6. Dull ost, boring stages, clones that share 2 different character slots for no reason, and painfully long cheesy character endings that makes Disney look rated Mature 💀
Dude if you ever played this in the arcade they make her a bit harder to beat she can cancel her strings into a fucking parry and always a well timed input read on my ass...
There was barely any marketing for it and it was too complicated even for a Tekken game. I also think another factor to TTT2 being such a financial failure was that Namco underestimated how much money they would have made at the time if they sold characters as DLC. While it was nice not having to pay for characters in TTT2, it definitely did more harm than good to the franchise. Still a fun game to play tho
Wait, barely any marketing? But didn't Namco put a lot of money into its marketing? Like, you Namco hiring models to cosplay as the female characters and making sexy videos, you had Anna telling gamers to get their pre-ordered copies at GameStop via voice message, the CG trailers, the Snoop Dogg collaboration... like this wasn't a game that fell under the radar, I remember seeing a LOT of ads for it.
Meh F DLC. Was so refreshing then to still have a big fighting game giving free fighters was awesome. Now sadly mostly big games have that micro transactions to the bone that makes it more less fun to play it or go through it. Sure for fighting games maybe makes sense then go through 6 expansions full game price SF 2 days😢. But still tough FREE 🆓
@@DarkOverlord96 At a time when Marvel v capcom 3 and Street fighter 4 were dominating the genre. Namco didn't do nearly enough to get people to pay attention to this game.
I get where you're coming from, but I'm really glad the characters weren't sold as DLC. It would have been a lot of money out of consumers' pockets, and I'd rather not have another Street Fighter x Tekken where characters are locked behind a paywall. It's one of the reasons why I didn't really care for Tekken 7. Because a lot of characters (especially series veterans like Anna, Julia and Armor King) were DLC when they could have very easily been put on the base roster.
My favorite feature was Tekken Tunes , on PS3 at least you could put any mp3 file you had on your PS3 and set it to a certain stage and i spent so much time updating and switching out songs trying to find the right vibe for each stage. Such a cool feature
Tag 2 was simply not marketed well & by not well? I mean not at all I remember being in college at the time of this games release? And I mean. EVERYONE was confused as to why I had the game lmao
It's weird to hea r hat because I felt like it was being marketted. I guess it's because of the fact that I was reading about it on the internet and not seeing it on TV or something.
I'm seeing this sentiment a lot, but I'm also seeing people rally against it and citing the Snoop Dogg campaign... did you go to college in the US? Because people seem to be saying it really WAS marketed well in the US, at least.
I was never really a Tekken guy, I've dabbled in Tekken 3 before, but TTT2 was the first one I took seriously. Coming from SF4 and mostly 2D fighters, boy was I in for it. It was like learning a new language. Its kind of shocking to me how badly it did. I think it still holds up well today, even after T7.
Tekken got the SF III treatment. Was made at a wrong time. Now everyone loves playing SF III and ppl have learn to appreciate Tekken tag 2. Especially ppl are finding more tech and combos in this game. I STILL play it. I loved the brokenness of it, it's lunacy like MvC2. And also all the OG characters returning. Gotta love that Tekken 2 love.
TTT2 was the perfect excuse that my cousin and I needed to come together as a team after years of playing religiously against each other with 5, DR, and 6. Loved this game and ALL its details ❤
TT2 holds a special place in my heart because it's the first tekken game I ever properly played, I remember spending hours playing with my younger brothers. AND THAT SHOP MUSIC🤤
My older brothers were massive Tekken fans before this and when they bought this game, it was my first entry and I loved it as a casual player. I eventually got so hooked that I was genuinely sad when you couldn't switch characters in Tekken 7 (because I obviously didn't know that the 'Tag Tournament' deal was specific to Tag Tournament...)
I absolutely loved Tag 2. I swear it helped make Tekken as competitive as it is now 5 was retro and 6 was a quiet game. Tag 2 had tons of players stacking decades of knowledge RUclipsrs like the main man swe took Tag 2 so seriously The damage was crazy but that’s why we tagged out I played this happily for about 6 years and loved every minute. The graphics were some of the best on PS3 and somehow Jin in game looked even more serious and cool than he does in his PS5 design
I put more time into Tekken Tag 2 than any Tekken game since the PS1, it was such an excellent game. Even speaking as a casual fighting game player, I loved the roster (with brand new characters they gave you FOR FREE!). I love that it had everyone except Gon. I also loved the old school endings. Fancy looking CGI endings that don't take themselves too seriously and are great fun to watch. It also has the one thing that Max always advocates for in fighting games, which is a well-done tutorial. It teaches you about the bound system, unlike any other Tekken. Sure, I wish it carried over a couple of things from Tekken 6; the customisation was better in 6 and I'd like an extra offline mode. Not necessarily scenario mode but something cool and different like that.
If I recall, the Xbox doesn't actually uprender tag 2. But the original game was dynamic resolution to begin with on 360 and PS3 and that could drop hard in many places making the game very grainy and blurry. Of course with the extra GPU power on tap with the series consoles it will always run at 720p which is the maximum resolution. Which is nice but not technically an upgrade past the originals limits.
You know what's crazy. I wasn't in the US when this game was out, so I never really experienced the real competitive scene for this game while it was big. I was in the Navy, so when it released I was mostly stuck with people on our ship, and very soon after we went on a deployment. My competitive scene scene was a group of about seven people that included me. LOL After we got back into the states, it was weird, I was hearing that people didnt like the game, when for me, TTT2 was probably one of the best Tekken games ever for me. It's where Tekken really peaked for me.
When I played Tekken Tag 2 11 years ago, I didn't experience any input delay when I was playing on a CRT. When I got an HDTV 3 years later, I felt that input delay and it was so shocking to me. The feeling went away when I played it the second time.
Tekken tag 2 was my first tekken game, my first game that made me a gamer actually, I was 8 years old and this game literally made a lot change in my life It influenced me into becoming a martial artist (started shotokan karate then but I'm currently a boxer & kickboxer) , was my only friend when I had no friends in my elementary school years, gave me a lot of memories bro I have this memory of me and my brother in a random Saturday morning attempting to unlock all the characters endings and binge watching them while eating pizza, I got tekken 6 around a year after this and I absolutely adore this game and for me tekken 6 has one of the most underrated story modes in the tekken lore but it just didn't hit the same, no game hit the same after tag 2 for me, will always be a ttt2 defender with all my heart lmaooo I don't care if people hate it and think it's lame, that game made my childhood
To this day, its my favorite entry in the series. I hate that it was underappreciated by so many. This was also the game that got me to transition to a fightstick instead of pad for Tekken and I haven't looked back since.
Tag 2 was my first Tekken game. I don’t think I got it until 2014, but it was a ton of fun. I remember messing around a ton with the customization and having fun watching the different character endings. It’d be cool if some of the characters in that like Angel ever returned as DLC.
This is the Tekken game that I really committed to playing online and climb up the ranks. I had fun but man was it rough the amount of damage this game did was crazy. People say T7 does damage lol. Eddy/Lars, Double BoB, the ninjas, Eddy/Christie. Some team combination can easily do 80% of your bar. Bruce/Eddy was a OP ass team. Bruce could toss launchers all day and Eddy’s b1 4 on CH straight up delete your life bar and a lot of his moves can be tagged out for red life damage. This Tekken was for sure the sweatiest Tekken I’ve played. So many shit to worry about. KBD and Whiff punishing was a must in this game imo once you reach the upper ranks. Also throws were not nerfed yet to the generic throw system we got in T7. Let’s not forget the Tag mechanic and how to manage red life and safely tag your character out without getting blown up. So if you were a high ranked in this game you earned that shit. With that said this game pretty much solidify my fundamentals for the franchise. It was a rough experience and I do remember waiting for T7 since the insanity was a bit too much lol. Looking back tho I do miss it. It was a great Tekken game despite all the mechanics and matchup knowledge you had to learn. I got burned out of T7 and dropped it once I reached blue ranks but I kept playing Tag2 till the very end.
It is the best Tekken game. Deepest gameplay, best soundtrack, great balance, filled to the brim with content. Almost overwhelmingly great in a franchise full of GIANTS in the fighting game genre.
This game was the bomb, would re-buy it in an instant if it were to release on PC. EDIT: I baited the angry zoomer boomers with "the bomb"... That's totally radical and bodacious dude, far out. 😎
@@Dhampire1976listen, what you have to understand is that a lot of these fighting game players are like 30-50. Most of them grew up in the early 90s, when fighting games were booming in popularity
Quite surprising Tekken Tag 2 didn't sell well. I recall my friend bringing Tekken Tag 1 over. I had no idea it even existed, otherwise I would've got it. Maybe, simply put, there wasn't enough advertising.
Loved TTT2! Got it in the 'Fighting Edition' disc which included it with T6 and SCV. Of all the Tekken games, it has the most little nods for Lore lovers. There's so much heart put into it, but I can see why it was never one of the biggest. I hope that hasn't put them off the Tag sub-series forever though!
I actually think the upper mid level is where people get frustrated. The very very very top players loved being able to control variables with movement alone, and it had so much skill expression. I never got there, but watching those players do their thing was so cool.....
I remember owning this game back when I had a workable PS3. And when I did, I remember absolutely sucking at this game. And it was mainly due to my lack of knowledge of how to play a Tekken game. Yes, I have played Tekken 3 many years prior, but that was years ago, and my memories were incredibly hazy. It also didn't help that, due to me constantly utilizing either button-mashing or spamming projectiles whenever I played other fighting games, and as a result, I struggled a lot. In fact, the only time I was able to beat Unknown was when I used Ancient Ogre and True Ogre in a Tag Team. And even then, it was just barely, and it felt like pure luck. I think another reason why I was struggling with Tag Tournament 2 was because of how I couldn't get into the mechanic of tag teaming and switching to my partner, and I think the as to reason why I was incapable of comprehending this was how the gameplay worked. If one of the members of the Tag Team gets KOed, you've automatically lost. It didn't matter if your partner had a full HP, the moment the other player got KOed, it would count as a lost. And for me personally, I hated this mechanic. Every time this happened, it always made me ask in a fit of rage, what was the point of having a partner? At least with every other fighting games that have a partner mechanic like the Marvel vs. Capcom games, Power Rangers Battle for the Grid, Skullgirls or Mortal Kombat 9, whenever you lost one of your teammates, you still kept going until either every team gets KOed, or the timer runs out. This was especially aggravating when confronting Unknown, as when I was about to win, she would combo one of my characters to death, resulting in me losing, even though I had another character who had full health and was eagered to fight.
The main factor of tag 1 not selling as much as it did . After Tekken 3 release and maybe during. Modifying consoles was a huge thing. Burning games was a plague during the PS1 and PS2 era. I remember empty disk's being sold like crazy.
Unfortunately the fact this game was essentially "more Tekken 6" is a major reason of why it failed, the same reason Tekken Tag didn't sell up to the standards of the previous games because it was generally "Tekken 3 on PS2".
The reason why this game failed for me personally is because while it included a ton of content, I didn't like any of it. I remember being so excited to see characters like Michelle and Jun finally return, but they do almost nothing interesting with that concept. Despite being a noncanon game with no risk of ruining the story, most characters are portrayed as boring as possible, only being showcased by their most tired and overused tropes. It also didn't help that all of the new characters from Tekken 6, which I hated, returned. Like Tekken 6, I thought this game looked ugly, but now the colors and stages looked worse to me. Rage was even more annoying, and trying to play competitive was a nightmare because of how complicated and bloated Tag 2 felt. I couldn't even click with the soundtrack, except for Your Sunset. Love that track, definitely one of my favorites.
Still one of my favourites, and actually my first time I played Tekken online. The co-op mode helps a lot. Like... if you just have fun with it and don't take it too seriously. With one person controlling each character you can actually move during your partners tag in combos and set up/finish a lot easier. Finishing off with Kuma's db 1+2 in the corner was just no joke.
I got this when Xbox was still giving out free games with gold and I was hooked. I've played since tekken 4 and this was maybe my favorite of the bunch.
I'll never get tired of TAG 2. Its the game I always come back to. Now if they'd make a Tekken Collection for modern consoles, I'd probably be going back to T5 or T3 all the time. I really wish they'd do that.
I also wonder Did the controversy with street fighter X tekken affected it as well While yes,it was more a capcom game, the whole DLC controversy really burned fans and Namco was "guilt by association"
I feel like for the passionate fanbase it wouldn't have- they would put it all on Capcom, as they should. But maybe casuals who weren't that knowledgeable, maybe they would put it on both names associated with the game? But then again again- I don't know if that casual audience would even know of, or CARE about, SF x Tekken in the first place, if they saw it was 2.5D they might just stay away...
My first ever Tekken that I took a competitive stance on. Having the chance to play double Ogre and successfully achieving every combo while also learning about frame data was the biggest achievement I could gladly acquire from this game along with how super fun it was discovering the scenarios in all the stages I would be in. This will forever be that game for me.
I played a lot of Tag 2 since its release and I thought it was the best in the series. The visuals, characters, even a bit of Snoop Dog as a cameo complete with a unique track was amazing.
I still think about how one day I just found out the game released out of nowhere and being given a poster of Tag 2 from a GameStop employee. I think I spent a good amount of hours just dedicated to the decal customizations in this game making random characters or outfits. I miss it a lot and is considered one of my favorite Tekken games ever
This was the start of me improving in Tekken. Loved this game. It felt like the peak of the franchise (before Tekken 8) and it felt to me like a celebration game
Tekken Tag 2 on the Wii U was my introduction to the franchise as a whole, and it absolutely blew my 11 year old mind away!! At that point I had only played SSFIV and a bit of SF2 Hyper Fighting, but when I started learning the core mechanics of Tekken I began to think this was on a whole other level X33 I was like "DUDE, you can sidestep in this game??" and at first I had a bit of trouble with Kazuya's DP inputs until I saw that- unlike SF- you have to bring the stick back to neutral before doin the rest of the input. Also the character customization was freakin INSANE, dude; being able to dress characters up in Mario outfits got a chuckle outta me cus I was also a BIG Mario fan at that point. Don't get me wrong man, SF is still my personal favorite franchise, but THIS was the game that truly made me become a fighting game fanatic
This was the BEST TEKKEN for me! The amount of fun I had with this game, other Tekkens got boring eventually.. Tag didn't!⚡️2 players playing online on the same side was nuts! 🔥
Blows me away when people think having to learn more than one character is a bad thing for a game. You gotta be pretty boring to play basically any fighting game and refuse to play any character other than the one your best with
Watching this video made me realize that Harada was trying to make Tekken into Smash with this one. Like you mentioned, they crammed everything they could in this one, and this title is swimming with Easter eggs and references to earlier games that would fly by casual fans
@@UltimateBallaPOM The way I would answer this is the fanservice in Tag 1 was like the fanservice in Smash 64, the fanservice in Tag 2 is very much the same level as we started getting in Smash on Wii U, 3DS, and the Switch. Really went into overdrive
Tag 2 was such a vibe. The opening setting up a real Tournament without the constraints of a story. It's just so good. I played it a lot and I was able to get a glimpse of it at gamescom ❤️ Oh and it was the first time I bought DLC for the T4 soundtrack 😭 I guess I like the games that nearly killed the franchise the most
For me still the best Tekken game I've ever played and also the last actual Tekken game. Everything after this became a street fighter-esque light show Also TTT2 is NOT available for purchase in the store. The games isn't even available, only add ons. For some extremely stupid reason, they got rid of it.
Having all those characters on the game is a good thing, it's not bad at all. There are too many games out there where there's nothing to do after you beat the game or story mode. On TTT2 there's always something new to learn and always something to do. This is what keeps the game alive and stops it from being tiring after a while. I personally enjoyed learning new teams and seeing the chemistry between the two. Not to mention you don't have to learn a lot characters. If you only want to learn two then you're free to do so.
I was really surprised when I was hearing that people didn't like this game. Despite me never having played it, I thought people really liked it and it looked cool this whole time
I got Tag Tournament 2 for the Wii U back in the day when it was new and it was a great fighting game to have along with Smash Wii U. Remember Tekken Resolution being neat for a free version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for PS3. Recently brought Tekken 7 and the offline features are a downgrade but the gameplay is improved. Surprised there's no arcade ending for anyone, or Team Battle. The roster is disappointing, but is interesting too. I understand more why my brother think Tekken 4 wasn't great in his eyes after Tag Tournament 1. I like Tekken 4 as first Tekken game, especially for its dark tone. Soul Calibur V is another game I remember being disappointed with too, after Soul Calibur IV. I strongly agree that Tag Tournament 2 is the best in the Tekken series. Guess many fell off after Tekken 4 and Tekken 6 to make it less popular.
This is the Tekken that truly made me a Tekken player. I loved 5, but my ps3 had thousands of hours put into it with my brothers and best friend. That being said, I hated this game by the time 7 came out because of how long the team combos are. The burnout for tag 2 was very real. Still has the best customization by a landslide
Whatever this games status might be, we are never getting another Tekken game this unique again This is the Tekken game thats the closest to my heart and nothing is ever close
For me it's T2 due to just how much time i put into it as a child along with super SF 2 turbo but this game was a close 2nd. I loved this game and played it until T7 launched. My only gripe is kaz lost his TT1 Solo status in favour of Jun\unknown.
Because Tekken 7 was budgeted like soul calibur 6 and this game alongside soul calibur 5 kind of set the precedence of potential failure for these two to have anyway
Tekken Tag 2 is definitely daunting to learn as a casual but does provide a ton of content and hours of combos, I can only imagine how much a Tekken Tag 3 would be like with all the new crazy moves and heat on top of the old bounds, tagging, rage drives, wall and floor breaks. We could be talking TOD's like dragon ball fighterz if they don't heavily nerf combos.
Tag 2 brings a tear to my eye. This was my first game where I started actually LEARNING tekken and tekken systems. I mained miharu and kunimitsu. But my meme team was Alex and true oger
Good god my tag team was Jun/Asuka or it'll be just as annoying as rage activating at 10% health where most of the meta is "kill them before they kill us"
So that's why I always end up dead when My rage activates cause Jin and Kazuya are my Mains
LOL
Xiaoyu and Asuka were my mains and I found out Xiaoyu didn't like Asuka 😩 perhaps she saw Asuka's infamous ending in T5.
I played Bryan and Yoshimitsu.
I didn't get rage very often XD
Best part: DLC characters were just a free update lol
Happier times...
Biggest Tekken roster. Still hope they do one more !
I think that unfortunately contributed to financial failure.
Ah there you go that's why the numbers ain't that high

Titan Fall 2 is another example of what you’re talking about
I blame STxT for the downfall of this game.

Both Arcade and Console versions are amazing. Also, best Tekken theme.
Absolutely, loved Miguel vs Heihachi and Alisa
It goes so hard
Factual Statement
It’s tekken 5 for me
As "the casual audience" it did absolutely hit and grab me when it came to Wii U.
It is what it is
Wiiu is the best installment of this game imo
The tag aspect is what I loved about this game.

It was aggravating to play long term. The delay was like torture..
@@waverazor This is why so often Online gaming kills games.
The game can be brilliant (like this one) but if the online sucks a number of fans ignore it's brilliance and rate it only based on it's online
Something similar has happened with GTA V over time. A lot of people loved the game but then Online got ruined so they changed their opinion to hating the game as a whole.

Realistically, closer to 30 years, canon-wise. Crazy to think I was still in primary school back then.
T2 Kazuya and Jun/Unknown are still my favorite bosses in the series.
Jun was always my favorite...
I was just about to comment this, this def my favourite tekken game ever
I definetley agree with you. This to me is the best tekken since 5.
Tekken Tag 2 was my introduction to Tekken and one of the reasons I was excited for Tekken 7. I didn't play any online but it was super fun to play with my family and made me enjoy a lot of the characters this series had to offer
Me with this game and a used copy of 5dr for the psp

Im honestly dumbfounded that any Tag entry could've failed, considering the fact that, in my opinion, they have the most replay value XD
@@w21aaaaaThis would have made an excellent launch title for the 8th gen.
@@w21aaaaa which sucks bc fans would know that tag tournament would be the objectively better game on their respective consoles 🥲 but i cant blame the average consumer since how would they even know that in comparison

What's everyone's record on Survival mode? Mine is 13 Wins with Dragunov on his own and 10 each with Dragunov teaming with Jin and Heihachi, and with Heihachi on his own.
Being able to play couch co op online was one of the best features ever

People like to shit on it, but the lyrics were actually good: "God Fist combo, here comes the blessing."
Tekken 7 looks ugly on consoles (and not much better on PC) but fared very well...
Agreed. It was weird seeing people go from Tekken is one of the most impressive looking games to one of the ugliest to people after so many years.
This had so much content so much stuff in it so many things that bring you back to the other games in the series and even the customization theme is fire........ This was one of my favorite games in the series next to 3 and 5.
Same !!!!
Sammme
I fucking love Tag 2.
It's up there with 3 and 5 for me.
Same bro 👍
I appreciate Tekken 7 for keeping the game alive, but 3, 5, and TTT2 are definitely the games that all went the hardest when they didn't need to.
Tekken Tag 2 is literally my favorite because of how great the customization feature are... You could even put your own music for the stages and it was AMAZING.
And on the Wii U, you can dead ass paint on characters using the gamepad
You have no idea how excited i was for this game, I saw it in a game informer, then saw it came out on my birthday in 2012. bought it TWICE and played it absolutely non stop i was so curious and hype for this that I discovered team spooky's channel of Markman coming in to give them an hour worth of demo gameplay and thats when i was hooked on competitive fighting games
Yeah I remember buying this games collector's edition at launch and being so surprised to find out it was technically a flop a few years later.
It’s fun with friends and family even when button mashing.
@@MattTheHuman9 I still go back to my 360 and just look at my avatar with the raven or yoshimitsu costume lol
I agree. I saw plenty of ads for tekken 5dr, 6, 7, and now 8, but not for tag 2.
Why Warhammer?
Dragunov trying to IKEA together an Alisa-unit and failing while not moving a facial muscle... they really ought to give him SOME ruthless moments soon because at this rate him being an adorable stonewall is like ALL the characterization he's got.
@@Dracobyte Them things can get confusing, but my former technician brain finds a way! 😆 🤣
Tekken tag 2 is my favorite and Leo and Jin is my main. This game makes tag tournament much more love by making character combinations of team throws and the endings are just as amazing and memorable.
May be my favorite Tekken game of all time. Still go back to this and as mentioned, it looks and plays fantastic on Xbox Series X
Nah this game had hea y marketing that contributed to its status as a failure. There was even a snoop Dogg collab lol. It had alot of ads.

Ultra SF 4 was amazing tho…
i remember when i first discovered Tag 2, i didnt know the game existed!!! I played Tekken 6 but i didnt know they released Tag 2 til some years later and ask myself "How did i miss this!? Where was this!? How did i not see any commercials covering this games existance!?"
Man did i have fun when i bought this, i wish i knew about its existance sooner
Dude…same exact thing happened to me XD I’m kinda mad that all that time I spent in Tekken 6, I could’ve been spending it in tag 2 instead
I always presume everyone into gaming is like me and hang on video game news sites all the time and know almost everything that's releasing... but if they didn't even try to air commercials and reach people outside that that feels like a miss, considering how much they needed this game to sell.
Honestly such a top tier fighting game in terms of content.
Ngl as a kid I hated it because Tekken 6 felt better to me in every way. Stages, music, visual style, everything made me feel like fighting on a couch with friends and family felt better in tekken 6. Then I actually had insane fun with Scenario Campaign. I really felt no reason to play TTT2 back then
Tag 2 is the perfect example of being a absolutely amazing game at the wrong place at the wrong time
TTT2 intros and the Piano theme remix kicked me right in the Nostalgia.. I love this game.
Tekken tag tournament 2 getting more appreciation feels like it will become a street fighter 3 for modern day
Plus, Snoop Dogg
I dont think people appreciate street fighter 3 now still..

Fallen Garden is a banger of a theme too.
I think a major reason was it didn't get a PS4 and Xbox One release.
My favorite feature was Tekken Tunes , on PS3 at least you could put any mp3 file you had on your PS3 and set it to a certain stage and i spent so much time updating and switching out songs trying to find the right vibe for each stage. Such a cool feature

I swear it helped make Tekken as competitive as it is now
5 was retro and 6 was a quiet game.
Tag 2 had tons of players stacking decades of knowledge
RUclipsrs like the main man swe took Tag 2 so seriously
The damage was crazy but that’s why we tagged out
I played this happily for about 6 years and loved every minute.
Though not technically, visually I like what I see
RPCS3 is the best way to play this game in glorious 4K. You can even drastically lower the input lag on here too !
LOL
After we got back into the states, it was weird, I was hearing that people didnt like the game, when for me, TTT2 was probably one of the best Tekken games ever for me.
Tekken tag 2 was my first tekken game, my first game that made me a gamer actually, I was 8 years old and this game literally made a lot change in my life
It influenced me into becoming a martial artist (started shotokan karate then but I'm currently a boxer & kickboxer) , was my only friend when I had no friends in my elementary school years, gave me a lot of memories bro I have this memory of me and my brother in a random Saturday morning attempting to unlock all the characters endings and binge watching them while eating pizza, I got tekken 6 around a year after this and I absolutely adore this game and for me tekken 6 has one of the most underrated story modes in the tekken lore but it just didn't hit the same, no game hit the same after tag 2 for me, will always be a ttt2 defender with all my heart lmaooo I don't care if people hate it and think it's lame, that game made my childhood
You can play it on an emulator. Thats what i do
@@Dhampire1976 I do. Sup?
@@Dhampire1976listen, what you have to understand is that a lot of these fighting game players are like 30-50. Most of them grew up in the early 90s, when fighting games were booming in popularity

Official PC release WITH REAL ROLLBACK NETCODE, yes, I would buy.
4:47 right here is why I have owned this game for so many GD years and have maybe an 5 hours of play time into it. Tekken DR 100s of hours…
Imagine if this game got a remaster with Tekken 8's netcode.
I also wonder
Did the controversy with street fighter X tekken affected it as well
While yes,it was more a capcom game, the whole DLC controversy really burned fans and Namco was "guilt by association"
I loved this game when I was younger but I never knew it "failed" as a game. I just enjoyed playing this in arcades and on my ps3
This is by far my favorite fighter of all time.
Absolutely beautiful and a blast to play.
At that point I had only played SSFIV and a bit of SF2 Hyper Fighting, but when I started learning the core mechanics of Tekken I began to think this was on a whole other level X33
I was like "DUDE, you can sidestep in this game??" and at first I had a bit of trouble with Kazuya's DP inputs until I saw that- unlike SF- you have to bring the stick back to neutral before doin the rest of the input.
The True love letter to Tekken
It's pretty much the Tekken equivalent of a party game. I happen to fucking love it, but it's damn messy.
This was the BEST TEKKEN for me! The amount of fun I had with this game, other Tekkens got boring eventually.. Tag didn't!⚡️2 players playing online on the same side was nuts! 🔥
Agreed. This game was fun for years!
Blows me away when people think having to learn more than one character is a bad thing for a game. You gotta be pretty boring to play basically any fighting game and refuse to play any character other than the one your best with
True
Watching this video made me realize that Harada was trying to make Tekken into Smash with this one. Like you mentioned, they crammed everything they could in this one, and this title is swimming with Easter eggs and references to earlier games that would fly by casual fans
But the same thing was done in Tag 1 though.
I played it a lot and I was able to get a glimpse of it at gamescom ❤️
Oh and it was the first time I bought DLC for the T4 soundtrack 😭 I guess I like the games that nearly killed the franchise the most
For me still the best Tekken game I've ever played and also the last actual Tekken game.
Everything after this became a street fighter-esque light show
Also TTT2 is NOT available for purchase in the store.
This was the first tekken game I played in my childhood not a great one to start with but it was amazing for me who just got into fighting games
Whatever this games status might be, we are never getting another Tekken game this unique again
This is the Tekken game thats the closest to my heart and nothing is ever close
For me it's T2 due to just how much time i put into it as a child along with super SF 2 turbo but this game was a close 2nd.
I loved this game and played it until T7 launched.
My only gripe is kaz lost his TT1 Solo status in favour of Jun\unknown.
In retrospect, this has to be the Tekken game that I had the most fun with since Tekken 3. Just so much fun!
I would say it's the Mortal Kombat Armageddon of Tekken games
I love TTT2 though lol
Hell naw, deception
This was my first Tekken game when I had no idea what Tekken even was. Slim Bob will forever be my favorite character
Dont forget this game gave extra characters for free with the updates
i played so much tag 2 wit my fam growing up, luv this game
man i loved this game. most hours i put in tekken. also extremely hilarious that the tag games are just Ganryus dreams 😂
I just got recently got into Tekken and so far this is one of my favorites outside of 8.
This game looks so good, better than T7 in graphical aspects
