I think what we're hearing here is his natural speaking voice. His other one is more of a "performance" voice. My previous job sometimes required me to speak in front of groups. I don't know why, but I unconsciously made my speech voice a little higher than my natural one. To avoid mumbling & I guess to sound more pleasant. I know that women will sometimes do the opposite & deepen their voice under similar circumstances.

Yes, Tim Curry is amazing as usual - but please also pay some attention to the wonderful host, Alfred Biolek. He passed away last year, and German television had never seen and likely will never see such an amazing host again.
