    ----------------
"I was still a Marxist after taking Milton Friedman's course [at the University of Chicago]," says free market economist and social critic Thomas Sowell. "One summer in the government was enough to let me say government is really not the answer."
Known for provocative and best-selling books such as Knowledge and Decisions, A Conflict of Visions, and last year's Charter Schools and Their Enemies, the internationally renowned scholar is the subject of a new documentary and biography, both authored by Jason L. Riley, a Manhattan Institute senior fellow and Wall Street Journal columnist. Beyond the breadth and depth of his interests, what sets Sowell apart is that he "puts truth above popularity and doesn't concern himself with being politically correct," Riley tells Reason's Nick Gillespie. "It's an adherence to empiricism, to facts and logic and putting that ahead of theory. [Sowell] is much more interested in how an idea has panned out…rather than simply what the intent is."
Among Sowell's chief insights are the realizations that there are no perfect solutions, only tradeoffs, and that information, knowledge, and wisdom are dispersed throughout society, often in unarticulated ways that experts and elitists ignore. As Sowell wrote in his memoir, growing up poor and segregated during the Depression, he had "daily contact with people who were neither well-educated nor particularly genteel, but who had practical wisdom far beyond what I had," which gave him "a lasting respect for the common sense of ordinary people, a factor routinely ignored by the intellectuals among whom I would later make my career."
At age 90, Sowell is still writing and publishing. His greatest scholarship may be behind him, but his body of work will continue to have a profound impact on our understanding of the world long after he's gone.
Narrated by Nick Gillespie. Edited by John Osterhoudt. Additional graphics by Paul Detrick.

No, you're wrong too -- as he's a liar and a hypocrite, and I can prove it. But his disciples are so preoccupied with putting him on a pedestal and praising his "principles" -- that they flagrantly fail to follow them (just as he did on the issue in question). "Following facts" that go in the direction you desire -- doesn't count. Anybody can do that. Would one "one of the world's greatest intellects" flagrantly ignore irrefutable evidence of mathematical certainty to help manufacture a war in the Middle East in the aftermath of 9/11? I wouldn’t care if this guy cured cancer: You don’t get a pass for basking in baseless beliefs that cripple the country - and have the bottomless nerve to preach responsibility & accountability to boot. THAT is a cancer of its own. The poison he pumped into the atmosphere helped destroy the internal organs of America. Governments everywhere who have failed to keep vested interest from planting their tentacles into the corridors of public office cannot be helped regardless of the quality of advisors they surround themselves with.
Democracy becomes a pageant once every 5 years, with every contestants pitch is to save the world/country/economy/ environment/bald eagle/middle class/ way of life or another dozen of cliched word salad.

You cannot say "his genius" as it really is more his practice to think things through and avoid the temptation to arrive at preconceived notions and move on. That does not take genius but choice. He is of course a genius whatever that means on any given day. I am thankful for his sharing of results that will help everyone someday in some way.

Knowledge and Decisions is by far the most intelligent book I have ever attempted to read. I have listened to it twice or thrice (can't remember which) and barely scratched the surface. In my humble opinion as a long time fan of economics and as someone who possesses a bachelor's degree in economics, I think that book alone is worthy of a Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics for Sowell.

I wish we had ONE thinker, ONE economist of the calibre of Dr.Thomas Sowell here in India..may be we do, but this person isn't in the public eye.
Dr.Sowell has never gotten his due because his views run completely contrary to the world of liberal/progressive/Marxist academia which is so overwhelmingly white.
He is truly an international treasure..but we live in a sad world where hundreds of millions worship the false prophets of hope and change( who capture power to enrich themselves preying upon minority grievances ) while completely ignoring a man who is genuinely interested in improving the lot of the poorest of the poor

I am 34 and mixed and both my parents , even though they were privileged didn't have running water (Africa and UK countryside). Anyone from the developing world in knows what it is like to have your electric or water cut off. No point lying to people to make a point. 70 years ago in most the world having running water was a fucking miracle.

That Burke quote is the simplest and yet most eloquent explanation of why socialism in a vacuum doesn't work. It and communism are both very optimistic ideologies, they don't really account for people taking advantage of them
Yes, if everyone worked together and agreed to work hard and share everything equally, we could probably end up in a Utopia. But that's not how humans work. We're flawed, many of us are greedy or selfish. We can't ignore those facts when designing a national government

Sowell’s declaration that schools aren’t responsive to parents is simply misleading. Here in the US school policies are set at the school district level and parents play a crucial, if not decisive, role in electing their local school boards. The idea that schools are run by distant non responsive bureaucrats is just plain wrong.
