I live in England. I spent four years at school studying economics and never once heard this man's name. Now I've discovered him I looked for his books Basic Economics in 4 libraries and couldn't see it. I'm starting to think there's a reason my country is in such a shit way.
I think they will get themselves out, as their weird and contradictional policies are becoming so impactful on the public, that they will opt to at least vote against these regressives. And this nice house we built with government debt could of course collapse at any time, making way for change. Not much we individuals can do to impact this, but its the way it is.
Adolf Critler doubt it. look at other countires. the government is going to take all of our guns. crime will increase at same time as the government closing in on censorship of free speech. one day you are going to wake up in pseudo north korea and wish you could go back in time to change it but you cant.
27:38 Bam. That right there. As a young man in 2020 (just turned 20 yesterday), this is the feeling that has bothered me for my whole childhood, finally summed up into words. I got sent here by my Critical Thinking class expecting some boring 30-minute diatribe, but instead I got the revelation of a lifetime. Great stuff.
One of the most lonely individuals found in America today is an intelligent conservative. Listen with an open mind to Dr. Thomas Sowell & you'll know why.
It's interesting his last comment was about the fact that he was 81 in the year 2011 when this video was made. It's now 2021, ten years later and Thomas Sowell is still alive and will turn 91 this year. It's also interesting to note that he is still making videos of various social issues at 91 years of age. His mind remains clear and sharp to this day.
"[students] are being taught that they have to have views, but they're not being taught that it's important to know what you're talking about." Thomas, you are an oracle of wisdom.
Every time I listen to Thomas Sowell I believe there is hope, due to his sharp focus on problems. THEN I remember he is but one strong oak in a forest of dead trees.
This man's name had never once been mentioned to me in school or by anybody later in any capacity. I literally had to stumble over his name through my own newborn interests in research AFTER I began to question those in power in our nation. Same goes for Milton Friedman.
"Never underestimate the difficulty of changing false beliefs by facts." Undeniably true. America at this time is a land in which ideology trumps evidence. And this puts the nation and we who live here in grave peril.
+Bam Mam Because When you deal with someone that you cannot reason with you are ultimately left with two choices, you either A) Ignore them and instruct others to do the same because they are irrational and do not respond to the world as it. Or B) You eliminate them from the conversation, by any means necessary because they cannot contribute anything to any discussion because they are living in a world populated by their imagination, not reality. The real problem is what happens when you can no longer pick Option A) because the people in charge ARE the people who do not respond to facts.
He is such a gem; a true American intellectual. I dread the day when he leaves us. Our country will lose a great mind as it did when Milton Friedman passed on. But thank you for all your wisdom and knowledge, Mr. Sowell.
That's actually a sign of intelligence. To recognise that someone is smarter than you requires intelligence. Stupid people are unable to recognise that someone is smarter than them because of their stupidity. It is called the Dunning Kruger effect.
I love the titles of Sowell's books. "The Vision of the Anointed." "The Quest for Cosmic Justice." These sarcastic titles sound almost like sci-fi/fantasy books and that lures people in for a hardcore lesson on Reality 101.
Watching this in 2023, I'm on a marathon of this series of interviews, OMG, his words are full of wisdom & still so relative to the messy events in USA & EU today... He makes me see the big picture much more clear, thank you Sir! Also, I bought the ebook Basic Economics, very good read, highly recommended.
"They're being taught that it's important to have views and they're not being taught that it's important to know what you're talking about." - man, I learn so much from this guy.
We love both of these admirable men. Thank you for every single video, Dr. Robinson. All hail to the power and intellect of Dr. Thomas Sowell, one of the greatest gifts from above to America. He's an American hero, and I can't bear to think of the USA without him.
Thanks Peter. Tom Sowell, a mentor to us all (and I say this at 70 anos), if we're wise enough to listen or lucky enough to hear. Thanks Peter, Hoover and Tom. Much appreciated.
Calm, clear, scientific, empirical, open, objectively analytical, clearly a towering intellect and all at the same time - what a lovely man. Simple as that.
r dautzenberg Apparently the call to cast off the shackles of the oppressor and build a shining utopia is far more marketable than advocating for personal responsibility and attributing trends to impersonal systemic factors. Who knew?
This interview is utterly amazing. They've distilled some of the biggest questions and answers of our time into a neat, understandable 30min segment.. I was captivated
"They're taught to have views but they are not taught to know what they're talking about." That gave me a good laugh, it's so accurate when you look around and see. Love his humor btw. Such a great man.
They are not prophetic. They are self fulfilling prophosies. You cant underfund and gut programs and then claim those programs were doomed to fail. You doomed them to fail when you sent billions over seas to make corparations more attractive to foreign governments, while you sucked the lifeblood out of the middle class and underclass of your own country. Ignorant people continue to fall for the same stupid tricks. The lie that they are the arbitors of their own fortune in a nation of people looking out for themselves. How many inovations have been shelved because it was cheaper in the short term to stay with the inneficient program already paid for? How many technologies have been stiffled to protect the profit margins of out dated and obsolete companies. How many trillions go out the door to unprofitabke companies while programs that would do more and cost a fraction are under funded and demonized. How many fortune 500 companies are on the government tit while the people paying into that system are struggling to survive.
Dude I feel like an uneducated moron when I listen to this genius speak. His ability to read studies and elaborate on them and organize them to press forward an argument are incredible.
What a privilege to listen to Mr. Sowell's insights. As someone who takes a hobbyist interest in economics his findings are absolutely astounding. Thank you for not taking the job as a photographer sir!
I am Indian and read the book, even as Indian my biggest take on the book is that when seeking the truth we need to get to the bottom of it. Easy to read and learn few facts here and there
The education system is largely run by the left, it may be intentional, it may be unconscious, but they leave important stuff out sometimes if it runs counter to the democrat narrative.
Why I left the left is they put an inordinate amount of focus on the worst parts of history and seem keen to divide Americans into thinking of themselves primarily on ethnic rather than national lines. The media does it too, black guys aren't being shot at a higher rate than before, and in fact, before all the news coverage this rate had been going down for decades... now it's up, I think not because there is an increase, but due to an increased perception that the police are out to get them, this in turn causes them to be more nervous around cops, which the officers perceive and in turn become more nervous themselves.... but thinking beyond two steps is too hard for most it seems...
it's a shame our children in grade schools aren't introduced to this man and many great thinkers like him....it's all about truth and facts not hoping and wishing....God bless you Mr. Sowell.....
Thomas Sowell, a national treasure. I've learned so much real history from him. My two favorite subjects in school, besides art, was history and economics, so I get so much of what he's saying. ❤❤❤❤
That was a good read and a nice highlight of some of the examples from the book. Sowell is totally right about teachers in public schools getting kids that are barely 10 to take political sides. I am so glad he continues to write on many occasions.
Thomas Sowell is indeed a national treasure. I dread the day when his time on this Earth is finished. Some of the best wisdom imparted by Tom Sowell on how to be successful that would serve students well: "Equip yourself with skills people are willing to pay for."
Can’t get enough of Sowell I used to think I needed to know all the knowledge in the history of humanity, but now I will be happy to simply absorb all the knowledge that Thomas Sowell has.
Thomas Sowell is brilliant! Speaks very clearly and makes logical comprehensible arguments supported by clear facts, not the confused nonsense that so call intellectuals are producing today.. Nothing but respect and admiration for Mr Sowell.
This was an incredible interview. It's funny how when you're growing up you're led to believe liberalism is the 'alternative' when in reality it's the other way around. Liberalism only maintains the power structure as it is & further harms the lesser off. & his assessment on race is really eye opening.
It is indeed a rare find, a man who understands how to acquire facts and organize them to enlighten one no matter where such knowledge may lead. No one does this better than Thomas Sowell. He does it sowell.
A Hoover Institution video with comments enabled! Thank you HI, I really appreciate all these videos, the Peter Robinson stuff, the old episodes of Firing Line, they're all fantastic. This channel has been instrumental in my transition from avowed Marxist to a fiscally conservative, socially liberal Libertarian/Classical-Liberal. I also really love Thomas Sowell, I find him really quite relatable, and I think he's a better communicator than he gives himself credit for, especially in his books. Excellent interview, one gets the impression Peter, and Thomas are friends, and I really envy Peter that.
I t would be so amazing if we could leave color out of everything and just be Americans. Tom Sowell I do believe is one of the smartest men I’ve ever heard. Thank you Tom for the much needed information we all need to listen to ✌️
An intellectual titan. Sowell is the man.
I live in England. I spent four years at school studying economics and never once heard this man's name. Now I've discovered him I looked for his books Basic Economics in 4 libraries and couldn't see it. I'm starting to think there's a reason my country is in such a shit way.
I love this interviewer as much as I love Sowell. This interviewer is magnificent and does exactly what an interviewer should.
not argue against him, bet get him to argue for himself. It is great
yep. exactly. he is very good. the left is a cancer that has been cast on all of humanity. not sure how we are supposed to get them out.
I think they will get themselves out, as their weird and contradictional policies are becoming so impactful on the public, that they will opt to at least vote against these regressives. And this nice house we built with government debt could of course collapse at any time, making way for change. Not much we individuals can do to impact this, but its the way it is.

I adore Peter. UK wouldn't be as good as it is without him.
THIS MAN SHOULD HAVE BEEN OUR FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT!!!!
I so wish that Thomas Sowell was as revered as all the singer's and sports figures are.
Great stuff.
damn it's 2020, and the part about riots is so true
The segment starting at 15:12 is particularly valuable given the recent nationwide riots over George Floyd.
One of the most lonely individuals found in America today is an intelligent conservative. Listen with an open mind to Dr. Thomas Sowell & you'll know why.
+James Hash
How do you know he's lonely, and what bearing does that have on his economic acumen?
+Homercles the great! but how could you possibly know that?
*****
I disagree. intelligent ppl have intelligent families. 😉
People with knowledge and good sense are always lonely
If only his book "Basic Economics" could be taught in every high school in the world. The economic ignorance of most voters is a devastating problem.
It's interesting his last comment was about the fact that he was 81 in the year 2011 when this video was made. "When I hear the word 'household income' I know we're not serious. :D"
I love this guy.
+aGiftedRighter Yeah, I used to think Paul Krugman was really smart. I had no idea what smart even looked like! lol
~'thumbs up' own comment~
"[students] are being taught that they have to have views, but they're not being taught that it's important to know what you're talking about." Thomas, you are an oracle of wisdom.
A person like this is more rare then common sense. Sowell really is a national treasure.
"Never underestimate the difficulty of changing false beliefs by facts."
Undeniably true. America at this time is a land in which ideology trumps evidence. And this puts the nation and we who live here in grave peril.
You are so right. I don't understand why so many tolerate this.
The only bad thing about Dr Sowell is that when I listen to him it makes me feel so ignorant.
Eric Garland we all feel the same
That's actually a sign of intelligence.
To recognise that someone is smarter than you requires intelligence.
Stupid people are unable to recognise that someone is smarter than them because of their stupidity.
It is called the Dunning Kruger effect.
Eric Garland Haha! Soooo true!
That's a bad thing? We shouldn't fear those who are better educated or prepared than ourselves.
That's a bad thing about you.
Dr.Sowell is so intelligent and so well-spoken. 😃I could listen to him all day and still want to hear more.
He's sharp intelligent and looks great at80 !
I love the titles of Sowell's books. "The Vision of the Anointed." "The Quest for Cosmic Justice." These sarcastic titles sound almost like sci-fi/fantasy books and that lures people in for a hardcore lesson on Reality 101.
People who don't understand basic economics think it's complicated and come up with complex answers to easy questions
Possibly the best interviewer and interviewee I have ever seen- thank you both!!
One of my favorite economists. Never heard of him in school- I had to stumble across him later.
"They're being taught that it's important to have views and they're not being taught that it's important to know what you're talking about." - man, I learn so much from this guy.
dr. sowell is a national treasure
allow me to correct you - Dr. Sowell is an INTERNATIONAL treasure
We love both of these admirable men. Thank you for every single video, Dr. Robinson. All hail to the power and intellect of Dr. Thomas Sowell, one of the greatest gifts from above to America. He's an American hero, and I can't bear to think of the USA without him.

Thanks Peter, Hoover and Tom. Much appreciated.
We need to get more interviews of Dr. Sowell...
This man is an intellectual giant in a world of smurfs.
"Raising a whole generation, that regard facts, as more or less optonal." TS
Calm, clear, scientific, empirical, open, objectively analytical, clearly a towering intellect and all at the same time - what a lovely man. Simple as that.
This guy has had all of this figured out for 30 years, how have we not picked up on it yet? What a brilliant and quick-minded man!
Because the opposition has better marketing ...
People don't like the truth.
r dautzenberg Apparently the call to cast off the shackles of the oppressor and build a shining utopia is far more marketable than advocating for personal responsibility and attributing trends to impersonal systemic factors. Who knew?
James Eck people want to feel loke they have more control(there smart enough to fix things) when reality is not so
Or an intellectually inept society.
An indictment of our times, that a man as humble and wise and Thomas Sowell is pleased that he won't be around for much longer.
It's fun watching Peter Robinson's mind get blown every three minutes.
I admire this man as much as I do the Founding Fathers.
Thomas Sowell is brilliant💯We need his voice more than ever at this current time.
Dr. Thomas Sowell destroys imaginary worlds with the bombs of words and numbers. Amazing.
Such a great man.
some of his comments are prophetic
and doomed to be ignored.
The truth is inconvenient to those who live in their own delusional world.
I am a white privileged male and I am culturally appropriating Thomas Sowell as one of my heroes. This guy is awesome.
Dude I feel like an uneducated moron when I listen to this genius speak. His ability to read studies and elaborate on them and organize them to press forward an argument are incredible.
Spent the past two days watching every video on youtube with Sowell and Friedman.. deliciously logical
Thank you so much! We need guys like Dr. Sowell in Germany.
Easy to read and learn few facts here and there
This is so relevant now!
My god he was literally one of the few fighting against what is going on with our world right now...
I could not agree more! It is disappointing that I only recently discovered Dr. Sowell. I intend to read as much of his work as possible!!!
Dr. Thomas Sowell is a great intellectual. I have tremendous admiration for this extraordinary self- made man.
I think this is one of the best interviews of all time, thank you both
This man is on the same level of Milton Friedman... Genius!!!!!!
I respect you so much Mr. Sowell, and I have all your books! Thank God, that you are here with us today!
Thomas Sowells perspectives sound counter intuitive yet when you look and hear what he is saying it resonates with the historic account.
Tommy Lopez you put it so well
That's because his perspectives are informed by the historic account
Sowell is a genius. Always had his books in our economics courses.
The men that want to be politicians shouldn't be, and the men that should be don't want to.
it's a shame our children in grade schools aren't introduced to this man and many great thinkers like him....it's all about truth and facts not hoping and wishing....God bless you Mr. Sowell.....
One of the most brilliant minds of our time. Yes, thank you so much for posting these videos.
I am surprised that I did not know about Thomas Sowell until this month, what a brilliant mind.
I find myself agreeing and enjoying Thomas Sowell's interviews and presentations.
Same here! This man needs to be heard by EVERYONE!
☘️ A great man, if ever someone is needed today it's Thomas Sowell.🕊️
And he's still alive and kicking! I think it's wonderful that somebody with a mind like that who worked amongst Friedman and others is still around.
He'll never really die as long as we have a way to remember him.
Thomas Sowell is indeed a national treasure. I dread the day when his time on this Earth is finished. Some of the best wisdom imparted by Tom Sowell on how to be successful that would serve students well: "Equip yourself with skills people are willing to pay for."
This is the brilliance we need more of in today's society. Thank you Dr. Sowell
Can’t get enough of Sowell
I used to think I needed to know all the knowledge in the history of humanity, but now I will be happy to simply absorb all the knowledge that Thomas Sowell has.
Thomas Sowell, Milton Friedman, Hayek, and Bastiat are my heroes haha
David Friedman, Milton's son is better.
Great list but I also like Gustave de Molinari and Marquis de Condorcet
I like Marx.
*****
Marx was nothing but a career-intellectual or professional intellectual
That's true.
15:55 justification to Rioting.... as true then as it is today. Thomas Sowell is so correct. I could listen to him all day long.
Fantastic!!! Perfect! Truthful! Complete!! Wisdom!!! Such a good friend to mankind. Wow!
I don't know... every time I hear Thomas Sowell speak, he makes perfect sense to me.
Thomas Sowell should have been either President.. or at least an advisor to one... he should be in the news all the time.. on stage speaking....
God this guy is smart I am actually chuckling while be blows my mind lol. Fantastic interview.
Thomas Sowell is brilliant! Speaks very clearly and makes logical comprehensible arguments supported by clear facts, not the confused nonsense that so call intellectuals are producing today..
Nothing but respect and admiration for Mr Sowell.
I love the calm tone of these two intellectuals.
LOL
reporter: "didn't I hear that Paul Krugman was your favorite economist"
Sowell: "not unless I was under the influence of LSD.."
Just imagine Thomas Sowell and Jordan Peterson having a conversation.
Maybe looking at the world as an economist removes bias. Thomas you have my deepest respect.
This was an incredible interview. It's funny how when you're growing up you're led to believe liberalism is the 'alternative' when in reality it's the other way around. Liberalism only maintains the power structure as it is & further harms the lesser off.
& his assessment on race is really eye opening.
well said
We The American Public are so Blessed that Thomas Sowell chose to be an Economist!
"'wrong' I think just about covers it..." he has such a way of putting things.
It is indeed a rare find, a man who understands how to acquire facts and organize them to enlighten one no matter where such knowledge may lead. No one does this better than Thomas Sowell. He does it sowell.
I especially enjoy the Sowell/Friedman videos.
Dr. Sowell explained that So-well.
The real HISTORY of America! Dr. Thomas Sowell is a Treasure...
"Just the facts, ma'am.....just the facts".
One of the greatest and a personal hero of mine.
I’m just disappointed that I have only just discovered this great man. I could listen to him for hours.
I recently read "Basic Economics" and came away very impressed. I defintely plan to read more of his work.
I click like on all his videos before watching them. He's proven himself to be a righteous and just man.
Sowell is like a breath of fresh air.
I t would be so amazing if we could leave color out of everything and just be Americans. Tom Sowell I do believe is one of the smartest men I’ve ever heard. Thank you Tom for the much needed information we all need to listen to ✌️
Sowell: an American Treasure!
Remarkable man. Great interview. Thank you.
