    Make no mistake this was revolutionary at the time. 3 part harmony and real story lyrics. FURTHER Brian Wilson was 250% of the creative talent behind the evolution and invented of this sound. Brian lost his wife yesterday I think. She saved his life. Like many geniuses they get trapped in their own heads and try and shut their heads down TO LOUD A VOICE. Blessing to Melinda who saved Brian and created beautiful children AND TO BRIAN who never would have been all that he is without her. Peace

    notice how Dennis plays backwards. he doesn't cross-stick like most drummers. he was self-taught, so nobody ever told him to cross his right hand on the high-hat cymbal. he plays the high-hat with his left hand and the snare with the right, while the rest of we right-handed drummers play the hat with our right hand and the snare with our left.
    also, Dennis played "matched grip". that is, he holds each stick with his palms facing down or sideways--very unusual for the early 1960s, when pretty much everyone learned "traditional grip", which is your dominant hand holds the stick with palm down, and your off-hand holding the stick palm up, like you see in marching bands.
    this is because back then, most students were taught jazz techniques (jazz was huge in the 1920s - 1950s), and jazz drummers almost always use traditional grip. search Buddy Rich to see traditional grip used in jazz.
    but because Dennis was self-taught, nobody taught him traditional grip, so he just did what felt comfortable and natural for him.
    little interesting tidbits that non-drummers probably never noticed.

    • @chriskearns7661
      @chriskearns7661 4 года назад +21

      Kinda to piggyback off of that, I noticed Brian playing the bass with his thumb. From what I know of bass players, they usually pluck the strings with their pointer and middle fingers, and plant their thumb above the strings. It's the weird little idiosyncrasies that make this band truly exceptional

    • @jaydenwhitlen1489
      @jaydenwhitlen1489 4 года назад +10

      @@chriskearns7661 well P-Bass back then actually had a finger rest on the bottom of the bass you can see Brian has his fingers under because electric bass was originally meant to played with you thumb, but most people came from double bass so they uses their fingers and guitar players obviously used picks on bass.

    • @NotDingse
      @NotDingse 4 года назад +2

      Actually, he played non-crossed because he was left handed. It wouldn't be right for him to play cross-handed, which additionally is why he put his ride on the left side so he didn't have to use his non-dominant hand. Would a drum teacher have accepted this in the 60s? I don't know but thank God he did it because otherwise he'd have a big disadvantage!

    • @SGBassplayer
      @SGBassplayer 4 года назад +2

      @@jaydenwhitlen1489 That is because Leo Fender knew how to build instruments, but he didn’t know how to play them. He put that shelf in the wrong place on the Precision Bass all those years ago, but Brian (who was always a piano player first) made it work.
      Brian Wilson is also lefthanded, so it was probably easier for him to play a righthanded bass by using his thumb of his non-dominant hand instead of the index and middle fingers (or a pick, which was more common with bass guitarists of that era).
      I don’t know when Fender started making lefthanded instruments, but it would have been interesting to see how much better a bassist Brian would have been if he had learned to play in a way that was more “natural” to him. Not that he’s a slouch on the bass (or any instrument) at all, but I find it fascinating that one of the great musical geniuses of our time wasn’t able to learn to play his instrument used for the early live performances in the correct way based on his personal dexterity.

    • @superslammer
      @superslammer 3 года назад

      @Mark Wehner SAme here. I play the exact same way. That isn't to say I can't play the other way, its just not as comfortable :) And the guy above mentions playing with thumb. I do that too. I also fret with my thumb as well. But for most bass playing I play like James Jamerson with a hook.

    I saw Brian Wilson and Al Jardine when they toured a couple of years ago for the 50th Anniversary of "Pet Sounds". It was an outstanding concert. Not only did they play the whole album, but they played a LOT of their other hits (probably and additional 10+ songs). The one thing that struck me so much and found very touching was Brian Wilson's sincerity as he frequently said to the crowd, "Thank You for believing in me all these years." He had gone through some hell, especially with a very controlling psychiatrist who "imprisoned" him so long, plus his various stress disorders. Regardless, he remained a musical genius with these otherwise simple sounding songs that comprised of complex harmonies, syncopation, key changes, etc (well maybe not Mike Love's sax solo in this video - lol ) .
    It was great seeing this video - these guys looking young (well, maybe not Jardine and love so much)... and seeing the smiles and reactions out of Brian Wilson, his effortless tenor and falsettos. Just wonderful. As a reporter from our local newspaper wrote about Brian at the end of her critique of the Pet Sounds Concert; "God only knows what we'd be without him."

    Nothing short of pure excellence! They were having so much fun. I loved Brian's laugh during Shut Down, and Denny killed it on the drums. You could see how proud Brian, Carl and Al were after Denny's fill. Anyone that knows anything about music knows that Brian is such a musical genius, which goes without saying really. Can't imagine having to be seated at a Beach Boys concert. I'd be up on my feet for most of the songs!

    Mike looks like he's 45 years old here but he's only 23.

      He always looked older than the other lads. Even a little grumpy, IMHO.

      He definitely looks like Grumpy Cat. And he's chewing gum. How declasse is that? /|\

    Wow...that was a live recording folks. That was an amazing performance. Sounded so close to the record if not better. What an American treasure they are. Those harmonies while they are playing their instruments too is downright impossible in my book. Some of the audience members got hit with a buzzsaw of genius song after genius song. That was epic man.
