@@chriskearns7661 well P-Bass back then actually had a finger rest on the bottom of the bass you can see Brian has his fingers under because electric bass was originally meant to played with you thumb, but most people came from double bass so they uses their fingers and guitar players obviously used picks on bass.
Actually, he played non-crossed because he was left handed. It wouldn't be right for him to play cross-handed, which additionally is why he put his ride on the left side so he didn't have to use his non-dominant hand. Would a drum teacher have accepted this in the 60s? I don't know but thank God he did it because otherwise he'd have a big disadvantage!
@@jaydenwhitlen1489 That is because Leo Fender knew how to build instruments, but he didn’t know how to play them. He put that shelf in the wrong place on the Precision Bass all those years ago, but Brian (who was always a piano player first) made it work. Brian Wilson is also lefthanded, so it was probably easier for him to play a righthanded bass by using his thumb of his non-dominant hand instead of the index and middle fingers (or a pick, which was more common with bass guitarists of that era). I don’t know when Fender started making lefthanded instruments, but it would have been interesting to see how much better a bassist Brian would have been if he had learned to play in a way that was more “natural” to him. Not that he’s a slouch on the bass (or any instrument) at all, but I find it fascinating that one of the great musical geniuses of our time wasn’t able to learn to play his instrument used for the early live performances in the correct way based on his personal dexterity.

i cried one verse into surfer girl. i dont know why, and i dont mind. holy shit, i thought i couldnt love the song more, but seeing them perform it brought even more emotion
The girls in the audience really responded to the lyric "In my woodie I would take you everywhere I go". It's pretty romantic, it basically says "I want you always by my side". I can understand crying to that song.
Denny really isn't that bad of a drummer at all. I am a drumner myself, and I think he is pretty good. Keeps good time and did well learning the basic rudiments. I am impressed.
That introduction and opening to Little Deuce Coupe was absolutely flawless. Brain’s falsetto throughout this whole performance as well. Flawless. Absolute masters of their craft. Most people today can’t even comprehend how beautiful this is. So thankful we have these historic recordings. Makes me cry how beautiful all these performances are and how they’re all slowly leaving us.. not too many of them left now, but they’ll live forever in the music they gave us and all our memories tied to them.
Nothing short of pure excellence! They were having so much fun. I loved Brian's laugh during Shut Down, and Denny killed it on the drums. You could see how proud Brian, Carl and Al were after Denny's fill. Anyone that knows anything about music knows that Brian is such a musical genius, which goes without saying really. But wow, he sounded phenomenal here (as he always did in the studio and on stage in top form). And his falsettos are out of this world. Love that guy! This is music! Thanks for posting
Also by Marilyn and i belive another beach boy member that this was Brian's first time singing Surfer Girl live and he was very nervous and that smile he cracks around the 1st "make my heart come all undone" he cracks a smile that was when he was lookin at Marilyn... Her and her sister can be seen in the audience... I got tix to see him in a cpl months... Hes just the best.
It all started when i heard I'LL GET AROUND on a transistor radio. Since then and up to present day, they are the greatest harmony band ever. Brian Wilson is an absolute genius. I love the BEACH BOYS for ever. Every time i hear FUN FUN FUN, i go crazy.
At 5:54 I don't think it was part of the script for Dennis to hit the cymbal bell ahaha look at all of there reactions! Carl was like wtf? ahaha and even Mike was bewildered for a second ahaha Al and Brian just laughed it off
I recorded this concert off of American Pop back in '98 and have seen this easily over 100 times. I love this performance, flaws and all. Absolutely priceless! Notice how older brother Brian has to keep a young Carl in check throughout ( he was only like 17 at the time).
Hard not to focus on Brian, watch Al. The excitement on his face is like 'this is great!!' lol. And, he and Carl are class acts on that side of the stage. They're on that mic with precision, looks like they're having the time of their lives. We all would feel that way!
It's the end of 2022, almost 60 years after this show. The world's a very different place today and a band like this will never exist again. But watching this live recording... it can't be denied just how damn good they really were. Not bad fellas, not bad at all.
compared with bands of today whose music is more 'migraine inducing with its constant overuse of bass sounds and lyrics that are more of an unsavoury nature ( full of hate etc) this video is a joy to watch!! thank you to the person who uploaded it, more of these 60s concerts please they are great!!
The first time I saw this performance, I couldn’t believe how amazing they sounded when they stepped up to the mics for Little Deuce Coupe. I rewinded the video at least 10 times to listen to that part.
Knowing what we know now, you can see little hints of what was to come. And yet he is so charmingly innocent here, like a shy cat. What a lovely, lovely experience.
This was awesome, I attended a concert in Lennox , before D.C., they grew up in Hawthorn, a hop skip and jump from us, good fun, thank you for sharing!
13:13 It was at this moment that the great Mike Love started to develop the moonwalk, and train Michael Jackson. How humble of this man to not even try to claim the move as his own
I had the pleasure of taking my brother to see Brian Wilson a month ago, and to our pleasant surprise, Al Jardine was also there!! Dude looks exactly the same as this vid. Never aged. It was a wonderful experience to share with my brother!!! I love ya, Brian.
Brian is such a genius. These songs are like nothing else. It's barbershop vocals with 50s rock. The way he uses his falsetto is just crazy! Imagine doing this without autotune? 14:28 😁
Read about the history of this band --- cousins, friends, plenty of feuding. But you are absolutely correct that many musical groups couldn't match this kind of performance, then or now.
16:45 - Really good demonstration of what a great performer Brian Wilson was before he had his issues and decided to concentrate on composing and producing.
@Kirk Wolfe As opposed to Dennis Wilson, Ringo could play basically every style of music and keep time. I love Dennis, but he could not keep a tempo during the early Beach Boys years. But he was a hell of a driving force, he really pushed that band
Amazing mix especially considering the times, the equipment, gear etc. This is pure gold. Imagine how many moments in music history are gone forever but we get to witness a moment in history here
I don't want to hear any complaints about any beachboys member. They all had a part in this phenomenal slice of sixties music. At the time I knew it was something special and I've carried it my whole life and til the day I die. Such beautiful melodies and lyrics and emotionally charged songs. How did they do it?
As much as everyone hates on Love, there is something he adds with his voice to make their distinctive sound. Also with the Wilsons being more shy, they were glad to give the "showman emcee" role to him as cheesy as it may be.
To add a bit of perspective to the professionalism shown in their performance: when this concert occurred, I believe Dennis would be 19, Carl would be 17, and Brian is 22.
At one time I thought Carl was older than Dennis, possibly because he acted older. But at this concert, Mike had just turned 23, Brian and Al were 21, Dennis 19 and Carl 17.
It kills me that so many people are so critical of these great guys. They were a product of a long lost time in America where people could dream and take advantage of opportunities that were fleeting at best. I really believe that anyone under 50 just does not get it. Read some books about this era, it is amazing and so is their originality and talent. Enjoy this , its never coming again. God bless the sturdy survivors of these days! Go Mike Love, Go Carl, live forever Brian. We owe you big time.
I am the same age as Brian Wilson, but I did not dig them back in the day. I was only into soul, jazz, and R and B. But now I have great appreciation for them and the art of Brian. I saw the Pet Sounds tour this year and thought it was amazing. Thank God I finally woke up.
I had no idea that mike love was such an extraordinarily saxophone player ....amazing the depth and complexity of his sax work...and yet he’s so humble.
There's nothing humble about Mike love, he's known for being one of the biggest doosh bags in music history, but that doesn't change the fact he was a master sax player, his solo in Kokomo is world class.
This footage is a treasure. I hope you leave it up for good. How many concerts do we see the vintage Brian Wilson with his brothers & the band. Epic upload!
Wow...that was a live recording folks. That was an amazing performance. Sounded so close to the record if not better. What an American treasure they are. 3:45 Brian: "He rides from texas on a ten gallon hat" love the reactions. looks like carl may have flubbed it too
Just what I was looking for, thanks!
Brian Wilson is such a cutie with his baby face my fave songs are Brian's don't worry baby and in my room surfer girl
Pat abrams Abrams - Brian looks like a young Alec Baldwin in this.
Yes the same. I love all the songs he sang lead the best. 👌 love me some Brian wilson ❤🎵🎼 pure genius
4:41 Brian cringing at Mike's scream
so does carl
HAHNSHSIAQINDNSJASISBDHUA I HEVER NOTICED THAT
@@caitlinunusedemail264 it isnt that funny
2:37 The ambulance sound.
Imagine how many thousands of times the boys cringed at something Mike said over the years...
At this time Brian is 22, Dennis is 20, and baby Carl is only 18 years old. Amazing talent and polish at such young ages.
Brian's birthday is June, Dennis and Carl were December. This concert was recorded March 14, 1964, which made Brian 21, Dennis 19, Carl 17.
@@cazgerald9471can you imagine being 17-19 playing professional gigs in front of screaming fans? And they sound amazing. These guys really really don’t get enough credit
and mike love looks 60 lmao
@@gingerAVand now he looks young at 83 😂😂
And mike
Great to see this, the Boys in their prime, and such excellent quality.
Brian's "prime" was later, until Mike Love killed it.
The Beach Boys, very little one can say - how we enjoyed their music. Thank you.
never impressed me.........not much good comes from californication....except clint and my favorite president Reagan..
Anna Cottage The best of times. Socal native during these innocent times.
I love Brian's falsetto. Especially on Hawaii. Oh and I think Mike Love is awesome too. Bad dancing and all :)
And no shoes! lol I thought I saw some moon walking sans Michael Jackson!
That's great dancing
@@johndenicola6173 yup!!! Same here
Mike love and awesome in the same sentence, something you don't ever see in a sentence, and probably never should lol
@@dylanwesley3964 Mike love is the best member of The Beach Boys
i cried one verse into surfer girl. i dont know why, and i dont mind. holy shit, i thought i couldnt love the song more, but seeing them perform it brought even more emotion
The girls in the audience really responded to the lyric "In my woodie I would take you everywhere I go". It's pretty romantic, it basically says "I want you always by my side". I can understand crying to that song.
Even with the early songs the musical and vocal arrangements by Brian are genius. Remember, he's just 22 here.
CapAnson12345 That’s True
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Wilson_is_a_genius
Actually, 21.
He was 22 when he wrote Pet Sounds
@@davidnissim589 no he was born in 1942, so he was 24 when he made pet sounds
The Beach Boys were my 1st concert in 1960, when I was 11. Convention Hall, Asbury Park, N.J.
Over the years, I always end up here at sometime, to watch the hardest working drummer in show biz, Denny....
Roger Moore Live in the Stage to the Beach Boys
Amazing. what a tight band and range of emotions. "In my Room" is devastatingly beautiful
i was very suprised to hear that one. my favorite beach boys song
Yessss
My favorite tone from the beach boys
I love that laugh part too! It actually worked well with the song. He giggled a few times through the concert. So cute.
Yeah espacially on " surfer girl " he sounded exactly like the studio version
Surprisingly, I remember where I was in '64 and certainly was a fan of the BBs
James Bond What's that That's a Movies
Also by Marilyn and i belive another beach boy member that this was Brian's first time singing Surfer Girl live and he was very nervous and that smile he cracks around the 1st "make my heart come all undone" he cracks a smile that was when he was lookin at Marilyn... Her and her sister can be seen in the audience... I got tix to see him in a cpl months... Hes just the best.
Love when Al and Carl start smiling during Surfer Girl ❤️
9:17 The way the light reflects off of Brian's bass tuner looks like a halo is around Dennis. Coincidental poetry. RIP
And if you really wanna search for hidden coincidences at 5:42 theres the same thing for Carl, who tragically died of lung cancer
It all started when i heard I'LL GET AROUND on a transistor radio. Since then and up to present day, they are the greatest harmony band ever. Brian Wilson is an absolute genius. I love the BEACH BOYS for ever. Every time i hear FUN FUN FUN, i go crazy.
Man they were good live
At 5:54 I don't think it was part of the script for Dennis to hit the cymbal bell ahaha look at all of there reactions! Carl was like wtf? ahaha and even Mike was bewildered for a second ahaha Al and Brian just laughed it off
Pretty funny, I watched this a bunch of times and never noticed that before
I like how Carl were looking behind him to see where that sound came from
Brian’s just like “Oh, Dennis...”
5:53
I recorded this concert off of American Pop back in '98 and have seen this easily over 100 times. I love this performance, flaws and all. Absolutely priceless! Notice how older brother Brian has to keep a young Carl in check throughout ( he was only like 17 at the time).
Great find. All so young and innocent and at the top of their game here.
This is my favorite video of the Beach Boys - live (not lip synched). With the four original members. Awesome!
Hard not to focus on Brian, watch Al. The excitement on his face is like 'this is great!!' lol. And, he and Carl are class acts on that side of the stage. They're on that mic with precision, looks like they're having the time of their lives.
We all would feel that way!
Absolutely awesome. These guys were the absolute bomb. Love the steps , the harmony, the original songs. Americana long gone...
@@pyro273 Gayla Peepvey and Roger Moore Sings Talk to the animals to 007 James bond
The first time I saw this performance, I couldn’t believe how amazing they sounded when they stepped up to the mics for Little Deuce Coupe. I rewinded the video at least 10 times to listen to that part.
I have always enjoyed this short concert. Brian is in great form here, complete with falsettos.
Well done Roger Moore Like also 007 James bond.
Brian is so timid yet the whole reason the whole thing happened
Knowing what we know now, you can see little hints of what was to come. And yet he is so charmingly innocent here, like a shy cat. What a lovely, lovely experience.

Such as?@@friscodog
This was awesome, I attended a concert in Lennox , before D.C., they grew up in Hawthorn, a hop skip and jump from us, good fun, thank you for sharing!
13:13 It was at this moment that the great Mike Love started to develop the moonwalk, and train Michael Jackson. How humble of this man to not even try to claim the move as his own
Peanut Spring 3 and don’t forget, he’s the first one to ever twerk too.
Lol, Mike makes me laugh
Really he just has to go to the bathroom
Brian was the genius and 🌟 star . He wasn't heavy , he could have made very heavy music, but he is pure heart
I had the pleasure of taking my brother to see Brian Wilson a month ago, and to our pleasant surprise, Al Jardine was also there!! Dude looks exactly the same as this vid. Never aged. It was a wonderful experience to share with my brother!!! I love ya, Brian.
Brian was by far the sexiest and most handsome of all of them. He is still my major crush! And I love his voice!!!!
I don't know who's the sexiest, but his hair is magical
I'm still in love with him lol
Dennis was the sexiest when they aged. Loved his long hair.
I prefer Dennis then Brian but he’s still great
Best concert I ever saw, the Beach Boys!
Brian is such a genius. These songs are like nothing else. It's barbershop vocals with 50s rock. The way he uses his falsetto is just crazy! Imagine doing this without autotune? 14:28 😁
Good Lord, Brian absolutely crushes it on Papa Oom Mow Mow
Absolutely, he OWNED it!
One of his best vocal performances IMO!!
Awesome to see footage of the original band playing live...and sounding incredible! They were magic
holy fuck the teamwork is so amazing
Read about the history of this band --- cousins, friends, plenty of feuding. But you are absolutely correct that many musical groups couldn't match this kind of performance, then or now.
Love Brian, so sad he had such a rough time. He’s a genius
16:45 - Really good demonstration of what a great performer Brian Wilson was before he had his issues and decided to concentrate on composing and producing.
why so little has been said about how great Denis' druming is?
@Kirk Wolfe As opposed to Dennis Wilson, Ringo could play basically every style of music and keep time. I love Dennis, but he could not keep a tempo during the early Beach Boys years. But he was a hell of a driving force, he really pushed that band
Because when Brian Wilson is in your band, you look amateur no matter what you play. He’s no Danny Carey
Amazing mix especially considering the times, the equipment, gear etc. This is pure gold. Imagine how many moments in music history are gone forever but we get to witness a moment in history here
amazing! and all live!
Ladies and Gentlemen Boys & Girls do you see of the movie now i can James Bond 007 some Little Creatures please getting for Roger Moore
I don't want to hear any complaints about any beachboys member. They all had a part in this phenomenal slice of sixties music. At the time I knew it was something special and I've carried it my whole life and til the day I die. Such beautiful melodies and lyrics and emotionally charged songs. How did they do it?
Started listening to The Beach Boys when I was eight years old,
No plans to stop.
Brian Wilson ,Carl all of them, National treasures.
3:48 Brian says "He rides from Texas on a 10-gallon hat."
Nice catch! Notice how the boys start laughing after he said it.
Classic performance. Sounds great live
As much as everyone hates on Love, there is something he adds with his voice to make their distinctive sound. Also with the Wilsons being more shy, they were glad to give the "showman emcee" role to him as cheesy as it may be.
true I don’t mind his nasally voice it sounds better on recordings tho
A Historical Event in Rock Music✌️
Love these guys
To add a bit of perspective to the professionalism shown in their performance: when this concert occurred, I believe Dennis would be 19, Carl would be 17, and Brian is 22.
MIKELIN8 and no one cares how old Mike Love was.
And Mike's 45
If this was March of 64 brian is 21 , his birthday is in June, and yes carl the youngest..
At one time I thought Carl was older than Dennis, possibly because he acted older. But at this concert, Mike had just turned 23, Brian and Al were 21, Dennis 19 and Carl 17.
Elizabeth Muhleisen wow yea I just realized this. I thought Dennis was the youngest but indeed Carl was the youngest.
@15:03, a mistake! And Brian heard it! Somebody got a talking to after the show!
NOT a mistake. That was actually Brian playing a bass triplet right before that next verse.
We owe them indeed!
Wow, Mike Love's stage persona certainly made him the Red Skelton of rock n roll!
I love how Dennis does that cheeky drum roll right at the end of 'In My Room'.
I love Brian Wilson...A REAL GENIUS!!!
🤣🤣
I was only 9 years old at this time. And I can remember them in 1964.
This footage is a treasure. I hope you leave it up for good. How many concerts do we see the vintage Brian Wilson with his brothers & the band. Epic upload!
No shit. Real beat and lyrics. Alah Rock n Roll in a class by itself.
Steve Upisleeve that was great. Sounded excellent. Brian was great looking so slim And Dennis was really good.

Can't imagine having to be seated at a Beach Boys concert. I'd be up on my feet for most of the songs!
Thank you Andy Lewin for unearthing this treasure! :-) The Beach Boys in their prime and the sounding awesome!!
Mike made a sacrifice of his hair for long and happy life.
Mike looks like he's 45 years old here but he's only 23.
He always looked older than the other lads. Even a little grumpy, IMHO.
He definitely looks like Grumpy Cat. And he's chewing gum. How declasse is that? /|\
Yikes! Lol
He never had a hairline
Facts thinking the same thing 😂
I love they singing there songs,I love all the Beach Boys songs
I love the Beach Boys and never saw anything this early with such great quality! Thanks so much!
Can’t take your eyes off Brian. Such a magnetic presence. 🌟
Incredible
Wow...that was a live recording folks. That was an amazing performance. Sounded so close to the record if not better. What an American treasure they are. Those harmonies while they are playing their instruments too is downright impossible in my book. Some of the audience members got hit with a buzzsaw of genius song after genius song. That was epic man.
