I've had a 981 Cayman S for about 7 months now ... Still brings a massive smile every time I drive it!!! Wanted one for like 3 years and finally took the plunge last year, not looked back at all!!
The owners response to you driving was great. It's clear that he loves that car and is happy to share the joy with another enthusiast. Such a pleasure to meet a regular guy who loves driving and is not getting caught up with the corporate spec. Good video man. Thanks.
This is it Joel, this is it, a suitable but expensive replacement for the almighty Z4...I really love my e86 coupe's sweet revving str8 six but I would swap it in a heart beat for a modern (manual gear) analogue naturally aspirated free revving flat six Cayman. Two seat, mid engine format is a proper sports car set up, it gets my stamp of approval as my love for NA engine is unexplainable. The owner is such a cool dude!
I really enjoy this series, there is in my opinion nothing like it out there (in terms of target group etc.). Caymans are unfortunately out of my range for now, but in the future I could see myself owning one, although I am more into convertibles (currently owning an mg tf). Thank you for those insights and looking forward to new episodes.
I dont know why people knock the color yellow. I saw this car come into a parking lot yesterday and let me tell you, it turns heads, even more so than a 911. It is a gorgeous classic design
I’m a real Linear man myself...hate quadratics and scattered data points. A real thumbs up for you guys. Love the colour as well, also happen to of had a Yellow Fiat Punto Sporting Abarth (6 gears...happy to show you around some time) as well as normal house kettle in the same same shade 👍
I don't know about adaptive suspension. The normal suspension might be a sweet spot between the firmer and softer settings of adaptive. I thought all 981s were racing yellow.
Awesome car. Always loved these but I think if I was gonna drop the money that one of these cost on a Porsche, I would get an older 911 instead. Might as well get the big boy if you’re gonna drop $40-50k on a car.
Hi Joel. Could you please ask Louis for more details regarding the Spyder Silverstone kit car that his dad built. I've got one and so have two of my friends. Only 23 were made, killed off in the end by it's sky high price. We know where many of them are but are always interested in finding out more. They're a very special kit car. Chassis is second to none. I've had mine for nearly twenty years.
@@louisnixon1569 Hi Louis. The only Silverstone that we know has a French connection is chassis #6 which I read about on a kit car forum. The guys username was "millhouse2". It was registered in 1991 and was a silver car with a Toyota engine. Quite a few cars had the 2TG Toyota twincam engine, as did mine. My friend's car, #22, was an un-registered "barn find" which he is preparing for IVA testing. There is a thread on the "Locostbuilders" forum about his car and others if you are interested. A quick google will bring up his car and mine, #12, on various forums.
My dads was silver with that engine I remember it having a red roll cage behind the seats! I'll have to dig up some photos thanks for this that's so cool to hear about it!
@@louisnixon1569 All the chassis were red. I've just looked up the thread on the madaboutkitcars forum. "millhouse2" is presumably your dad. Says that he made his own targa top and sidescreens. Reg number was Q811RGF. I'd love to see some photos. According to DVLA website it was taxed till 2003 and the last V5 issued in 2005. It doesn't mention export. Does the logbook still exist?
I am test driving a manual 981 Boxster GTS tomorrow, excited to see how it compares to my Z4M. Here in Germany a 981 GTS costs almost twice as much as a Z4M...
@@itsjoel Just came back from it. Would share some pictures of the car if it was possible on RUclips... The car is awesome. The mid-engine makes the car so agile and quick in corners, it's another league in this concern compared to the Z4M. The steering is very nice and direct but not as brilliant as the one from the Z4M, still really good. The gearbox itself is lots of fun, gears are easier to change. The gear ratio unfortunately is too long, 3rd gear goes up to roughly 183 kmh! The gears of my Z4M are much shorter and you feel that the S54 engine has more power, especially in higher rpms (I got the eventuri intake which seems to add some hp, guess mine has around 360hp). Therefore the auto blip in Sport Plus of the GTS is really fun and helpful in tight corners and I also preferred the sound of the Boxster though my Z4M with the Airbox sounds unique and great as well. I guess if I wantes to improve in every aspect I need to go for the 981 Spyder which I did drive last summer. Awesome car but very expensive... on the other hand I am not sure if I really need the extra hp of the Z4M, I am rather driving in the black forest than on the autobahn.
Spyder Silverstone mentioned at 12:40. I own a Spyder Silverstone, as do two of my friends. They were regarded as the best engineered kit cars at the time, only 23 were built. Louis, does your dad still own his Silverstone, if not do you know who does? Thanks.
Hey Chris no unfortunately he sold it years ago, the guy actually drove it to France and I believe its still there! He has the logical next step a Caterham 7 HPC now which is epic.
Thanks for that Louis, I appreciate you getting back to me. A while ago, I read some forum posts where a Silverstone owner was moving to France but was having difficulty getting the car registered over there, perhaps that was your dads car. Cheers.
987 I think is the best boxter-cayman , but that kind of cars I prefer owning by my friends, not me. 718 I don't even look. Is the 911 (996) play the game?
@@louisnixon1569 been there did that. Cross shopped = priced cars. 996,997,and an older higher milage 991.1. Tried manuals and tip/pdk on each. Every version of the cayman/boxster series was more fun to drive than the 911s mentioned above. It's just a very well engineered piece. Not all that hard to understand as porsche was quite active in race series using tru mid-engine cars.
From my own research the IMS issues although widely talked about only actually effect a very very small percentage of cars, so certainly wouldn’t put me off buying a 986 or 987 gen
You shouldn't read the scare stories, you should read up on which production months are affected and which are not ;) If you are in the US, Porsche changed most of the IMSBs following a law suit. If you can, you should get 981 though. I think the 987 looks a bit dated in comparison and the interior is so much nicer in the 981. There are also scare stories of 981 engines with pistons "tipping over", not sure how to describe it in English, but that basically destroys your engine. :) Best is to get on the Porsche extended warranty, so a 981 would be a better candidate for that as well. Not knowing where you are, I gonna say it is ca "60 bucks" a months. That is very reasonable and no matter what happens - not your problem.
@@williamtann53 I went with the 987.2 Cayman 2.9 PDK. No IMS. No direct ingection washing the bores. No stiff clutch. No shifter cable issues. The Sport Plus flips the Mr. Hyde switch.
Have had mine for several months now and absolutely love it...especially now since I put the new exhaust on it🔥🔥🔥 Check out my video for the clip of it
Interesting- I’ve often heard the V6S is better to drive than the V8, having less weight over the front. Given how Caymans are holding their value, do you think an M2 maybe a better used buy for the money?
Interesting, I’ve never actually driven a V8 f-type so would be interesting to see. I’m not too sure about which would be the better investment, my money would actually be on the cayman, however both are a fantastic price at the moment and in fact, the M2 is a car I’m hoping to feature in this “series” very soon
Hey mate cool video, ive got an m140i at the mo but sort of fancy a change this year for the summer, what do you think of one of these compared to the m140i and does it feel more slow. Cheers pal
Honestly, for me it would be the Cayman any day of the week. The M140i is a great car, but is just so numb to drive in comparison. You can really feel the cayman through the steering wheel and it handles incredibly well. I think it’s performance is comparable to the M140i, not as torquey, but much more rewarding to drive because when you get to the top end it flys!

True, although I actually prefer the way that the mid-engined Boxster’s and Cayman’s drive to the 911
It's Joel They’re definitely a little more balanced and easier to handle. But that 911 engine and the extra horses is just hard to beat for me.
