Funny, I bought the Tormek after watching your videos on the record sharpener (and I’d generally be a big fan of record too) and here on a random search for Tormek diamond wheels, you’ve popped up again. Grand video.

That's a great wheel. I don't have a use for a machine like that, I do hand sharpen my chisels on a wet stone and I have Lansky knife sharpening system. If I ever get a wood lathe I'll keep that in mind.
The water additive also helps prevent rust on your tool blades sharpened on the diamond wheel.
Also, do consider getting the Tormek SE-77 Square Edge Jig for your plane blades. The added ability to camber them is really nice.
Finally, as someone mentioned, the truing tool you have been using is basically the Tormek ADV-50D. That is two generations old, and I quickly donated mine to a fella who has a museum of everything Tormek. The TT-50, especially the newest one, is significantly better.

Its such a small surface on a large wheel you get a tiny hollow grind it's not really an issue

Try putting a sponge mat just short of the underneath of the wheel, then fill with water so the wheel is only emersed a few mil. You could use a wet sponge for the side also.
i thought off doing this with my triton wetstone grinder last year just didn't bite the bullet. but probably will do get one soon. in the long run it will save so much money
I miss my Triton days, had the tablesaw and router tables back in the day as a budding guitar builder. How's the grinder working out for you? I'm at that stage of comparing Tormek alternatives...

I have the WEN and it was unusable until I bought the Tormek truing tool and flat tool jig. Been thinking a CBN low speed grinder next, but maybe I’ll go with the big CBN. Even if I’m not 100% happy, that same wheel will go on to serve fine on a Tormek proper. Thanks brother!!!
*But, I don’t turn.... so, mine is only getting used for regrinding primaries on irons and chisels. Additionally, the WEN isn’t variable speed, but I have an interim modulator that I can use on various tools like the grinder, scroll saw, pro dremel, etc.

Great video. Iv got a T8 and im debating in getting a diamond wheel really invested in sharpening equipment and I have the full shapton set too amazing when your tools are super sharp make wood working more fun

Sharp is also safer, sometimes much safer, since less effort needed to make cut can concentrate on holding in position instead of pushing and bashing. I've been horrified watching friends and family forcing blunt edges at workpieces. If they listen, let me sharpen, then they grin with joy and relief. When they don't listen, it's been A&E visit for stitches once or twice
I have one of these, only used once as the guid fence was not true. New one arrived today and I’m hopeful. I shall be doing the same as you and using tormek attachments. I’m wondering if their 10” wheels will work? Diamond wheel little more than I can afford right now. Thanks so much for this video x

The anti corrosion fluid is probably just glycol based antifreeze, or similar. Airless spray manufacturers market a product called pump saver ,for adding to water for long term storage. Glycol based antifreeze is non toxic and anti corrosion. Its a good marketing ploy to rebrand something and sell it in tiny overpriced bottles.
Very true, the tormek leather stropping wheel compound appears to use a rebranded version of a buffing compound called solvol autosol possibly familiar for those that used to clean the chrome on cars and bikes. Available in the UK not sure about elsewhere.
The angle finder on the Tormek requires that you place the portion that rests on the blade only near the tip of the blade, closest to the stone. They say placing it elsewhere alters the angle. Does the Record angle finder let you place it up near the support bar as you showed in the video?

FYI jet have a range of jigs for their clone that fit the Tormek, eg bars that allow use of the flat side of the stone. Not too pricy either, least wise weren’t!

Did you swap over the honing wheel as well and did you need to swap out the smaller drive wheel as well?
I’ve started on the same upgrade path as you but for my smaller 8 inch version. I bought the tormek diamond truing jig, which partially fits, but the bar dimensions are slightly different so it won’t reach to go around the adjustable bar for the height. It’s still better than what was supplied , 😄

Hi! I listened carefully. I understood that nothing beats the Tormek. We have in France the Scheppach (which costs 120€ or three-four times less than the Tormek). We reproach him that the grinding wheel does not rotate round and the lack of micrometric guidance of the template support: which makes me hesitate . Does recordpower have the same disadvantages or is there just the problem of the quality of the stone, too soft and a poor general qualitative aspect.Because if the bearings are correct and just a wheel problem to change it can remain interesting. as you did with the diamond wheel. thank you for your opinion

Hello sir, will COARSE diamond wheel serve the purpose of grinding primary bevel quickly ?
Whenever secondary bevel area becomes bigger I want to grind it back to 25 degree quickly ?
For secondary bevel I’m comfortable with my diamond stones.
do you know if you can use some liquid other than water? something that won' t freeze in a unheated garage in the sub zero winters?
That looks like a good upgrade. Did you compare diamond with CBN? They are similar in price and performance, but I don't know why to choose one over the other. The woodturner's wonders wheels do say not to leave them wet.
Diamond wheels out preforms cbn wheels at lower temperatures, cbn wheels are only better for high speed grinding and as you never reach high speeds or high temperatures on a Tormek style grinder the diamond wheels are far better
Do you buy a corrosion inhibitor from Tormek or have you found a cheaper solution?

They make CBN wheels that will go on the Tormek, so it would probably have went on that tool also. They are cheaper and you can get them with a flat side that you can use to sharpen tools also. They are cooler and stay flat for ever also, on tools also. To late now though.

Might be easier to take the tool out of the handle. Should be easier on your bowl gauge.
Get yourself the Tormek gouge jig for £84 it will do away with all that frustration as the jig pops out of its fulcrum
I'm asking everyone... If you could buy a Tormek (without jigs) or a Worksharp WS3000 for the same price which one would you buy??
Plus one for the Tormek, buttt... the tools are really good but pricey. Mine is an older green model T8 equivalent. Jets clone has various bars and tools that were reasonably priced that fit the Tormek. It’s been a while since I purchased them from Rutlands in the UK. But allowed me to have a side grinding option . They seemed to have cloned every thing. With Tormek it is a case of cry once and be happy later. Would strongly recommend upgrading to the stainless steel axle the chromed steel one rusts badly, and the stone will never come off. And unlike John having to use a spanner to change wheel it is a simple 1/4 rotation of the stone in an anti-clockwise direction and the stone is released. The knurled nut just spins off. reverse to put different wheel on, spin nut to the stone and a gentle pressure on the wheel to tighten. Also! Sorry.. the Tormek guide to sharpening is really good and worth a read if you have one of their machines and presumably their clones as well.
I am not a fan if sharpening all of my hand tools! At all. I don't have any machines to help out so it is a pain. Particularly when I need to do the primary bevel. I have the same 400/1000 grit diamond stone that you have John and then some Japanese stones up to 8000 grit. But boy oh boy - on A2 steel, does it take bucket loads of elbow grease to make any progress!
*when I am half way through grinding the primary bevel - "it's been 84 years"! Ha ha
wow done same as you diamond is way better , is the water supposed to be left in when not in use thanks
store the water in a bottle and reuse it, its not good to leave the wheel sitting in the water

I bought the tormek trueing tool and some other tormek accessories to sharpen turning tools. Only after that I started to like the machine. The RP trueing tool as well as the gouge sharpening tool is absolute garbage. I agree that the stone gets smaller in no time.
I agree I never liked using it as it comes.
Upgrading to the DF 250 absolutely makes sense and will pay off quickly. I‘m just not sure I trust my toolrest to be parallel to the stone 🤔
Why wouldn’t you put your secondary bevel on? Should have bought a Tormek.. you wouldn’t regret it.

That stock gouge jig you're using, looks bloody awful and poorly designed. A "Sherwood Heligrind" jig might be what you need instead (for your Record Power wetstone):

Timbecon is an online store in Australia, but the "Sherwood" brand name, is only a rebadged name for Australia (& Timbecon). You'll probably find the same jig available in the UK, with a different brand name, possibly "Record Power". Your Record Power wetstone grinder looks a lot like the Sherwood equivalent here (but don't quote me on that). Still I think that Sherwood Heligrind gouge jig is exactly what you need with your wetstone grinder. Even though that jig is demonstrated with a high speed grinder, there's no reason why you couldn't use it with a slow speed wetstone grinder - it sure looks a lot more stable than what you've got and more precise. I don't own one, but I thought you might appreciate the idea, because your stock jig looks absolutely frustrating.
