      Yes there is no issue connecting the ground of DC PSU. In lab situations when you have many power supplies that is exactly what you do.

      @@DrZzs without a common ground, the 3V3 volt signal from the pi could be floating above the 5V of the led strip and cause reliability issues or damage to the LEDs. If it works it works, but it's not ideal. Same goes if you use the level shifter, gnds should still be connected.

    Do not pry up the metal tabs in those corner connectors too much... I did and it only took a little bit of spacing that caused the connector to be a less reliably to keep contact.
    It helps alot to have both of the connector's tabs open so the metal contacts are a little lose to get the strips underneath.

    Hi Dr, Thanks for your very clear video.
    Only one thing is not clear to me. What do you connect to the input of the capture card and more inportant Why??
    I would say that you just plugin a HDMI cable from your Mediabox or Apple TV to the capture card directly.
    Thanks again

  • @zachroberts6226

    I have a question and possible solution to the 4K dilemma most people have with this setup, could you use an HDMI splitter with one input and two outputs that output the same video at the same time and have one go into your tv and one going into the capture card? That way the capture card is still receiving the video data and the tv would still get full quality, there would just be no output cable from the capture card to the tv, it would go from the splitter to the tv, would this work?

    • @ConnerHall
      @ConnerHall 4 года назад

      I'm currently making a DIY Plex voice integrated "smart screen" Aperture Radio alarm clock. I'm using this exact method to output 1080p, but the idea should work just as well with 4k. It's pretty hard finding a 4k splitter to fit into the form factor, but doable. If anyone would be interested in a tutorial, let me know and I'll speed up production.

    Hi everyone. I actually fid exactly like this, and it worked from the first try. The only thing that is bothering me is that wenn my capture card doesn't detect any signal (Google TV Stick) then the LEDs should go out, but they aren't. They are constantly on and Displaying full white colour.
    Does anyone know what could be the Problem?
    I would appreciate your help
    Thanks in advance 🙏

    If you can make a brief video how to use a usb webcam as a video input i would be thankful
    This is important for smart tvs as we use them a lot for Netflix, YouTub, applications, etc.

    Could this work from something streaming to the TV? i.e from a plex server rather than a TV box or PC, etc

    • @DrZzs
      @DrZzs  4 года назад

      Any external HDMI signal will work. If you run Plex on the same pi, that will work too. The only thing that doesn't work is if the TV has roku or something built in. In that case there's now way to get the signal out to send to the lights.

    @DrZzs Put me on the list for a visit. I have been stabbing at this on & off, with large gaps in between, for a year and still don't even have HA working with a pi to control a switch toggle even. It could be the ultimate basic "help-a-noob" video for how to set up HA from the ground. I promise to ask all the most stupid questions and then some.

    Hey doc, all the videos and text guides suggest that a microprocessor (like Arduino Uno / Nano) is required. But you have demonstrated it is not. Could you share the possible reasoning why/how?
