This is true: I saw Rush in Boston a year after this happened and some dude in the crowd had a sign that said "Play Still No Guitar." I love Rush fans, let me tell ya...
if you've ever seen Alex's rig run down, you'd have to be an absolute genius to figure that shit out. they probably had to get NASA on the line for tech support. They did make the best of a bad situation though
The first time I saw RUSH was here in England 1978 , The smiles on the face of alex and geddy were so infectious, it affected me so much I became an instant fan. MIND you the music is pretty marvellous too.
can you imagine if that was Guns n Roses? Axl would be like - "Well thanks to the lame ass guitar tech, we're going home!" * microphone slams onto floor *
Rush: Task Failed Successfully Seriously though, I love Rush because they have a great sense of humor, and were able to recover from the worst situations and do stuff like this just because they could, and it is the best thing ever.
I've seen other bands have baby fits when stuff like this happens. They handled it quite well. What a tough situation to be in but being a rush fan it was a show in itself and everyone there enjoyed it. We were cracking up all the way out to the car and having great conversations with other fans. Great show!!! Glad someone caught it on video it was great to reminisce.
Nobody was fired. Scott Appleton continued as Lerxst's Guitar Tech for the 2011 portion of the tour. I'd assume he's still on payroll for the Clockwork Tour - we'll know for sure in 5 weeks.
Still one of the most awesome guitar pieces ever, Alex shows his utter best, pure excellence - Thank you Mr Lifeson! -- and such Grace Under Pressure from them all in this version..
Clay Gilchrist But this is the 2nd video where his guitar tech is apparently failing to do his job in a reasonable amount of time. In the other video, Alex's guitar stops working, and the tech doesn't even have a spare guitar anywhere nearby! It takes a while for him to finally show up with a spare guitar. There are usually spares right there, beside the stage if not on the stage. Here: ruclips.net/video/KZPwCEHZIjs/видео.html
Most bands "decorate" the stage with amplifier stacks and techy looking stuff that is not even plugged in. Rush uses the space for practical purposes. Like front loading washing machines- and now.....time machines! Now that's progressive rock.
I feel very blessed that I was able to see rush on numerous occasions including hemispheres. Seeing them on my birthday in Salt Lake City June 30 I think 2004 freaking amazing concert. Never be another band like them so much talent wrapped three Canadian boys.If you never had a chance to see rush your life will never be complete. Not fully.
Saw them in London in 07' ..Peart fucked up during Tom Sawyer and I mean NOTICEABLY, only dropped a beat but it felt like an eternity, poor geezer..I just about screamed!
I know right! Alex is clearly not happy about his guitar throughout the entire song - he just wants it to end. Me, I thought it sounded just fine - lol.@@smashdalde9713
Most bands would quit and then do a hey how are you all doing thing. Not these guys, true pros in every sense. Notice how quick peart picked up on the keys as a que to the intro the song. I hate these guys for being so fucking good.
I'm CERTAIN these guys would've EASILY done an improv. for another 20 minutes or however LONG it took the guitar-techs to figure something else out!!! LOL. "Thanks ladies and gents...........we GIVE YOU........"La-Villa-Strangiato" in a smooooooth, cool "Jazz" mode, can ya DEEG It,eh??? " LOL.
I was at this show in the second row right infront of Alex...the Video doesn't do justice. You really can't see the expressions on his face he was "PISSSED"....he's joking to the audience, but this face showed his true frustration. It wasn't the first time it happened on the tour either. The Far Cry Pyro's blew out his tech several times on the tour.
I wasn't there, and I don't know how Alex handles it, but I've had this happen quite a few times, and for me it's more panic/helplessness than being pissed. Pretty sure it's hard to distinguish from the audience POV, though... Several malfunctions over the course of a tour and it does get really old.
I think I was in the row behind you-- this is the angle I was seeing and I saw a guy with a camera in front of us... THIS IS GREAT STUFF!!!! It was a classic moment and I'm SO glad you captured it. I described the incident to several people, but now I can send around the link. Nicely done!
I remember seeing them in Evansville, Indiana at Roberts Stadium while they were doing their Moving Pictures tour. The place was packed and I remember how the audience cheered when they finished a song, especially when Neal Peart tossed a drumstick straight above him, caught it without losing a beat and then at the end of the song tossed his sticks into the audience. A great band and especially a great drummer, if not the greatest. Long live Neal Peart and Rush.
Exactly Bro!!! You ROLL with it! I believe Alex brought A LOT of class here to prevent it from ruining the show..He made it into a humorous situation, so much, he even got the crowd involved. Any other band would've bowed out/cut the lights/silenced/or had some PA announcement. What Alex did continued to bring the performance and its die-hard viewers Together! SO much that when he finally gets his guitar back you can hear the crowd roar in a Proud/Congratulatory approval. TRUE MUSICIANSHIP!
Daniel - do you understand what happened? Even when the guitar was working, Alex was annoyed, and remained annoyed. He wouldn't move from that spot close to the technician, he had no confidence that the "fix" was going to stay, but something was still wrong, and I'd love to know what it was. Plus of course his whole "musician" vibe was blown, and he had a hard time getting into the mindset for the solos. There were a couple of times when he started an octave lower than he wanted to and quickly corrected it, but the distraction for him was very real. There was something he just did not like or trust about the way that guitar was playing.
One of the greatest moments in modern rock music history. The professor just doing the groove like a metronome, Dirk doing the keys as well, and just laughing, and enjoying the show of a natural born comedian guitar god. :)
This is well filmed- and funny as hell! Saw Rush back in late 90's (I think) and encore was Natural Science, and Geddy & Neil were lost in the intro without a net, and Alex was the only one on time and saved their asses as they all laughed.
My son and I saw this show from the front row (in front of Geddy), we were also lucky enough to meet Geddy and Alex before the show!! True professionals backstage and onstage!! They rock and so do the fans!! Excellent video quality MickAv8r!
This is what makes/made them so great. Not only are/were the best at their craft; guitar, bass, and of course the "drum kit," when shit went south they just rolled with ut because the loved to do what they do. They will be missed but revered for ever!!
A testament to how amazing RUSH is/was. Most other bands would've threw a tantrum and stopped until it was fixed. RUSH made lemonade out of lemons and stormed through with grace and humor 🤙🏽🥁🎸🎤
I've seen Rush a number of times going back to the "Signals" tour; this is the best that I've seen Alex handle guitar issues. I've seen him absolutely flip out on his tech more than once.
This is great. I saw Yes once in 2011/12 and was in the first row when Steve Howe's guitar dropped out and he gave some pretty scary crypt keeper looks over to the side of the stage. They had him back up and running quickly but Lerxst just has so much more calmness and humor than most LOL.
This is my favorite version of La Villa now. Not only do we get an impromptu rant from Lerxst, we see absolute, 100% professionalism in the face of equipment failure. Grace Under Pressure, indeed.
This is how you handle an equipment malfunction live. Big Al made a comedy routine out of it and handled with an exceptional level of humor and professionalism
I loved that after they get to actually playing the song, he's having a conversation with the tech, while still playing his guitar part. That's crazy level of multi-tasking.
@bluesagg maybe but each of the three "amps" on stage just hold a 2x12 HK Statesman cabinet and a 32" LCD TV. The major change is that his amp heads are now off stage in the tech area and that he added an HK coreblade amp to his sound on BU2B and Caravan. So maybe the wiring is more complex but the components are not really ground breaking. BTW if you listen in at about 1:25 he says "I'm switching to drums..." LOL
At around 3:53 while Alex is marding with his tech and having a noticeably shitty go of it, geddy clearly mouths “we suck” to the crowd. Then at around 8 minutes you can clearly see Alex tell someone filming from the front row to emphatically “FUCK OFF”. Fucking hilarious.
Michael Cutcher says “Will never see 3 musicians at this level of caliber again.. Everyone of them is just amazing.” Michael you’re absolutely spot on because I saw KISS last year who have 4 musicians though the show was good…musically & vocally that was a epic disaster
Some kids had superheroes like super man and bat man, I had Lerxt !!! That recovery was taken in stride with a joke and smile, case in point!!! Mr Lifeson you are forever a hero:)
Unlike most bands, this proves Rush were real musicians that were expericed in their art. Most people would get extremly mad, though stuff, but not Rush. They make it fun and play along. Its live and it aint always perfect. This is why we love Rush. Music can be larger than life itself, but it'll never be larger than the crys and laughs it instills along way. Thanks Rush!
7:34 That china/pang/swish Neil bashes throughout the tail end of Alex's solo. Neil and Larry Allen or whomever mic'd those exotic cymbals so well it sounded like they had infinitesimal decay. It was BASH-BASH and the ringing disappeared behind the music until the next BASH-BASH. I've played for 43 years and Neil's affinity for chinas was one of the many reasons that made me love Rush.
@9:47.................."Da-na-na................Da-na-na............DA................STILL no GUITAR............STILL no Guitar............DA!!! " LOL. that would've been the PERFECT ending to this one!!! :)
I never get tired of watching Alex pull out that white Gibson ES-355 - I had to get myself one a few years ago - first song I played on it was Working Man then La Villa Strangiato - as I wept out of my eyes tears of respect for Alex and that fact i was just like him now - or rather had one of the same guitars as him
This is true: I saw Rush in Boston a year after this happened and some dude in the crowd had a sign that said "Play Still No Guitar." I love Rush fans, let me tell ya...
Dammit... that's the funniest thing I've read in months.
Omg! Pure genius! Hilarious! "Still No Guitar" better than ANY Taylor Swift song!
That's fantastic lol wow
Did Alex SEE that sign? If so - what was his reaction? :D :D :D
@@2kosher Taylor who? Hahahaha hahahaha hahahaha hahahaha hahahaha hahahaha
You know you’re on the top of your craft when the audience cheers even when your instrument doesn’t work.
That's not usually a good sign.
Rush fans ❤
I never get tired of hearing La Villa Strangiato. One of the best instrumentals ever composed, in my opinion.
5:50 sounded hideous
Will never see 3 musicians at this level of caliber again.. Everyone of them is just amazing.
Yes you will. Every time you type "Rush" into a RUclips search you will become engrossed in a wonderland of melodies.
Not only musicians but humans. They truely are at a whole nother level than us all!
Agreed
This was the first show I’d ever been to, at the age of 11, and this is still one of the highlights of my life
The guitar solo for La Villa Strangiato is probably the most well-crafted solo I've ever heard. Just brilliant.
I 4th that statement!!! :)
I 5th that statement!
The vocals are the best yet !
Yet the ending is the best ("diggydiddle do, diggydiddle do - tsh") makes me smile every time!
I 6th that sentiment. The emotion it invokes is beyond words.
Neil just back there drumming away like a machine as if he's oblivious. Thanks for all the great music Neil (and Rush!), sorry you had to go so soon.
if you've ever seen Alex's rig run down, you'd have to be an absolute genius to figure that shit out. they probably had to get NASA on the line for tech support. They did make the best of a bad situation though
2:15 What am I in? I'm in Primus.
Lmao for sure
Exactly what I thought , he would throw his mic and have a temper tantrum,Rush shows how the professionals do it
that is true!!
exactly!
Axel would "say" it. He would not "be like" it.
Rush fans are the best! They’re not only cool with the delay, they’re playing along with the intermission comedy special!
Of all the Rush songs I thought I'd have in my head for the next day or so, Still No Guitar was not the one I expected...
Man..talk about Grace Under Pressure!
JLloyd’s Junk good one!😄
Haha
Rush: Task Failed Successfully
Seriously though, I love Rush because they have a great sense of humor, and were able to recover from the worst situations and do stuff like this just because they could, and it is the best thing ever.
Theyareverytalent
.
Only the guys from Rush could take a technical difficulty and make it hilarious and fun.
He's clearly pissed though when he's talking to the roadies after the amps finally work as the song kicks in.
All this machinery making modern music...can still malfunction.
Nicely done sir!
I see what you did there...
Elmo Blatch Good one!
Nice!
Clever!
2:15 “what am I in....I’m in PRIMUS”
This is fantastic. Alex is my spirit animal
Legend has it... that there’s still no guitar
that would make a great tee-shirt...
No one would get it unless they’re a giant Rush fan but it would still be amazing
"I hate Rush.
They are so boring.
They play that stupid song for, like, 20 minutes."
This is one of the reasons why I love Alex.
He could do standup comedy, easily. Love these guys:)
is that what he was singing?
I've seen other bands have baby fits when stuff like this happens. They handled it quite well. What did you find out?
@@lithominium9955 Scott Appleton continued to be Lerxst’s guitar tech.
Looks like they could have really used the Gefilter.
This comment is complete gold!
"To me, you're a genius, to O'Malley here, you're a genius...but to a genius, you're no genius "
Still one of the most awesome guitar pieces ever, Alex shows his utter best, pure excellence - Thank you Mr Lifeson! -- and such Grace Under Pressure from them all in this version..
Everyone's laughing except for the guitar tech who must be mortified.
Alex isn't laughing, he looked pretty pissed.
I would be pissed too. Alex handled it well.
Clay Gilchrist

Wanna get away

Look at r40 live, it's perfect for your comment ! x)
falconeaterf15 The chicken rotisseries were my favorite
Drink machines and if course the screaming barbi dolls in front of Alexs pedal board since real girls never go to rush shows
And don’t forget the chicken rotisseries
Best band ever
Satan loves this band.
God listens to Rush.
I wish I could give you a thousand thumbs up for that statement
haha Geddy 3:54 "We suck" i love it!
OMG!! He did say that!!!
I think he said “Who needs a guitar?” But it’s hard to tell.
Well, Alex did refer to themselves as Primus moments before.
Not fully.
In typical Rush fashion, keeping their sense of humor, they work through it and still play their hearts out.
Actually refreshing to see an error in a Rush concert. They all handled it great. Audience handled it great as well.
Saw them in London in 07' ..Peart fucked up during Tom Sawyer and I mean NOTICEABLY, only dropped a beat but it felt like an eternity, poor geezer..I just about screamed!

Love when Geddy starts singing “He’s got no gui-tar! He’s got no gui-tar!” 😆
His guitar messes up and then he plays one of their most technically demanding songs. Figures haha
Most bands would quit and then do a hey how are you all doing thing. Not these guys, true pros in every sense. Notice how quick peart picked up on the keys as a que to the intro the song. I hate these guys for being so fucking good.

"Still No Guitar"....one of Rush's finest! Leads were out of this world!!
THIS is class! Can you imagine anyone else handling this so gracefully?
By far, the most underrated guitarist in rock and roll history!
That moment, after they got Big Al's ax fixed, when they all crashed back into the song and the crowd went fucking mental, was EVERYTHING!!!
I was pretty much right in front of Alex for all that!
crowd: STILL NO GUITAR! STILL NO GUITAR!
Alex: Hey guys! No Guitar!!!
crowd: YYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just should be glad it didnt happen on the dvd
The glares off to the side of the stage throughout the song gave it away and I don’t really blame him I’d be mad too
They never ceased to amaze me. BEST BAND EVER
Alex is so funny 😂 chanting, "still no guitar" I've never seen anything like this before!

"Still No Guitar" is still better than any rap or hip hop song ever lol
so funny
A fan at a following Rush concert held up a sign saying "play still no guitar", classic
So glad you got this - it's a unique moment.
Love the audience participation. Rush fans are the GREATEST!!!!!!
Does Geddy mouth "we suck" at 3:50?
I've seen Rush a number of times going back to the "Signals" tour; this is the best that I've seen Alex handle guitar issues. I've seen him absolutely flip out on his tech more than once.
This is great. I saw Yes once in 2011/12 and was in the first row when Steve Howe's guitar dropped out and he gave some pretty scary crypt keeper looks over to the side of the stage. They had him back up and running quickly but Lerxst just has so much more calmness and humor than most LOL.
This is the epitome of professionalism! lol And being down-to-earth while being the greatest band on said planet.
This is my favorite version of La Villa now. Not only do we get an impromptu rant from Lerxst, we see absolute, 100% professionalism in the face of equipment failure.
Grace Under Pressure, indeed.
Thanks again for the memory!!!
This is how you handle an equipment malfunction live. Big Al made a comedy routine out of it and handled with an exceptional level of humor and professionalism
Another chapter in the legend thx for posting
I loved that after they get to actually playing the song, he's having a conversation with the tech, while still playing his guitar part. That's crazy level of multi-tasking.
That was an odd performance of La V S for sure, but it had some poignant moments in the solo that don’t always come through. What a great piece.
No joke, I woke up this morning with “Still No Guitar” in my head lol
I was at the October 22 2012 Clockwork Angels show in Brooklyn - WHERE HIS GUITAR WENT OUT during 2112!! Once again, the band made it all funny.
Seen rush 1984 lol they were great love it took my brother
You should do this at every show!!! Love their attitude about the ordeal
This was a moment, I'll never forget. It made a perfect intro RIP
I’m glad they upgraded from those whirlpool machines
Does Alex tell a fan to “fuck off!” at 8:00? Looks like it.
Speaks so well of Alex's character, another guitarist might have gone full blown diva and thrown a fit onstage.
cant lie the first few minutes is still better than 99% of new songs
Complete nonsense. Not anyone elses fault you're musically ignorant.
And friends, this is and will be the best form to face technical problems. Best band ever.
so glad i got to see them 12 times in and around the toledo, ohio area. truly some of the best music, and by far the best drummer.
I was there and we were all having a blast during this. The technical difficulties only kept us there longer and I had no problem with that!
Nice filing there. Hardly any camera wobble which is great considering how far you are. That was a great way of handling the whole issue. Very funny.
i love moments like these lets see these guys entertain LOL professionals oh ya
