Thank you Alexa, but doesn't work for me. Using Adobe Illustrator 2019. Imported RGB png, embedded, edit colors, converted to grayscale. With image selected, tried to select color swatches to change color. Nothing happens.
Found the fix to my own technote. 😆I need a life... The RGB png from Photoshop had a transparent background and it was in 16bit. When importing into Illustrator it looked like a hot mess. Went back into Photoshop, I changed the RGB png to 8bit, did a 'Save As' for the PNG. Then followed the steps to convert to grayscale in Ilustrator, applied the swatch and worked. 🤘
@@ChristopherDillman Thanks for your comment. I have earlier mentioned this in reply to the comments asked by other users facing the same problem. Here is the comment: ------------- This and similar comments earlier, made me find out where the problem was. Everything works great for me until. About 1:10 . I have in grey scale but I don’t have that side bar. I’m trying to make the image white while retaining all the shading and details. This is the only video I see that gets me closest but currently I’m stuck at grey scale and my image is black

I make 3 identical rectangles - fill all with gradients from a saturated hue to a much less saturated hue. I convert to gray scale and go to the swatches with ALL 3 selected. When I click on any swatch, the swatch colorignores the gradients and fills them all with 100% of that swatch color. I've tried it both in CMYK and RGB. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your comment. This process works with raster images. To fill the rectangles with gradients, use Gradient Panel or click on Show Gradient Swatches in Swatches panel.

This must be your software's problem or you havn't followed the steps correctly. May be your canvas is set to grayscale color mode or some other problem. There's no issue with the method in this video. Thanks.
Same, I'm following the steps exactly. Once it turns to grayscale I'll click on a color swatch and see it on the left toolbar where the fill/stroke are shown, but the image itself remains grayscale no matter which swatch I choose. Are there any settings that I need to adjust? Does the embedded image need to be a specific type? I am trying this with an embedded PNG.
