The trailer dropped just after I made this video but I'm definitely going to be covering it! I'll look in to Starsector too. Thanks for watching, appreciate it
Yes, but from a gameplay perspective it felt a bit lacking. I think filling it with cosmic debris and having cover systems etc. should add some real depth to the gameplay in a way that works well (I hope...)
As a player of Earth 2150 and 2160, I lost all hope in the continuation of this long dead series which ended with a completely unresolved cliffhanger. Glad that other RTS games get new releases.
RTS and FPS combined :O interesting. I remember EVE tried to combine combat down on planets with the standard space-faring element. Not sure if it was a success for them but this looks like it has worked!
I been playing Age of Cores since Beta I am the longest running player out side the developer 😅. I have to say, Tom is an amazing developer, he only wants people to enjoy a game and have fun. He ask everyone regularly if we found bugs or what we would like to see added to the game. Ive played other games hes been part of developing and he truely is on top of issues and is active in the game with other players. He encourages us to be vocal if we have ideas for the game. Its amazing when you send in a ticket saying hey i think this would be better if it was a certain way. Then couple days later you see your ideas been implemented in the game. You never find games where they make you feel important or fix bugs fast as he does. Ill be honest i started the game with the mentality im just going to check it out give some advice and here i am over a year later still daily playing and helping find issues and give ideas. I never intended to play this game more then just a few times. Ive seen it grow from an idea to something i can spend more then half the day playing on. I totally addicted to it. From building stations across the galaxy to building my motherships stats and fleet, or making things interesting and playing with so many mission modifiers you could never replicate a match 2 times. Even more so now that modifiers are found in missions allowing you up to 3 additional per match. You can choose to pve or pvp. Soon there will be options for clan wars and team pvp. This game is truely taking off and nows the time to join in. Be part of the ideas to generate content and watch how it evolves into your own individual play style. I see great things for this game. I cant wait to see what time will bring to it. If anyone needs help in game find me in the community chat my screen names XtremeEvolution ill happily help out. Hope you all enjoy it much as I do.
@Ianbus123 yeah I been helping find bugs and toss ideas around. Then stuck around lol. If you need anything just give me a shout in Asylum or in the community chat
Asylum - that'll be the one that dominates every planet on the galaxy map then...@@jesseskinner8984 I was quite surprised when I got to the mothership menu and saw the global chat + the top 20 leaderboard. There's quite an active little community in there (in addition to the Discord)! So far so good and a lot of potential is my initial take on the game. It will be interesting to follow its growth.
@Ianbus123 we've been trying to teach others about galaxy domination. We have been letting others get some also were not being greedy at all. The new silver alliance is only one who's was willing to listen as we gave them advise for domination. Hows it go, you can lead a horse to water... lol 😆
being this vocal and community-centric is a book example of double-edged sword that being said, let's hope the other edge is still dull and not really cared for :)
I'm very hyped for StormGate but I try to reserve my judgement. I didn't know about age of cores either, thanks for bringing it up. I am absolutely addicted to BugByte's "Battlevoid: Harbinger" (mobile game) that is pretty much a mobile version of that game. I can recommend and there is no usual mobile game garbage in there. You could put a little more music in the background, something subtle should do the trick. I hope your channel grows mate!
I've had a brick phone for a long time so I have never been too involved in mobile gaming (also concerned about microtransactions etc.) - but I'll take a look at Battlevoid. Thanks for the advice and well wishes :) I have been planning to look at some of the royalty-free backing music as popular music (and game music) is problematic for YT. I think getting the sound balance right will be a struggle though. Making videos *sound* better is the main focus at the moment! Thanks for watching!
@@Ianbus123 No worries, your voice over has potential with training. I'd recommend reading a book or something loud for periods of times so you get more consistency in it and you should be good. And regarding the microtransactions, yes the whole market is infested and much worse than on PC but there ARE some good games there without the garbage. What baffles me is that there is no FTL on mobile (only iPads unless you break some things). I found the battlevoid games when asking about an FTL style game on mobile lol.
Ah that's really interesting @@canertwo FTL is one of the best games I've played in recent years. Don't Starve Together was another small dev team title which I got 100s of hours of fun from. I go to old videos on channels I think sound good voiceover wise and they are nothing like what you hear today.
A new one to add to the list from the guys who worked on SupCom and Planetary Annihilation, Industrial Annihilation which looks like Planetary Annihilation with a bit off Factorio sprinkled in
Looking forward to Tempest Rising and Zerospace! Been playing the command and conquer, and starcraft games sense the 90's. Not really a fan Homeworld type of gameplay. But Id give these all a try! Tired of seeing all these mobile and battle royal games coming out, those arnt fun imo.
It's exciting to see some studios pop up dedicated to PC RTS gaming. Like you say, sick of mobile cash grab games that disrespect the genre and the famous franchises.
I know from other comments you left out PA and PA: Titans because they're already out but didn't mention Industrial annihalation which isn't out and is from the same Studio. Granted as I Wrote this I realized it was only announced 2 Weeks ago. But of the ones Mentioned Homeworld 3 And Beyond All Reason seem the most most Interestesting. With Age of Cores being at least Mildly Interesting. Also about the Resource management in Arcane wilds I'm no Expert but it appears to be inspired by Age of Empires Least Partially.
Yeah Industrial Annihilation is brand new! The YT videos about it are very short at the moment and I'm looking forward to seeing a bit more. Nice to see another attempt to innovate in the genre.
Honestly for a long tome it felt like the RTS franchise was on life support only just beeing kept alive by Paradox Iteractive (and its massive DLC policy), AoE 4 (which iskind of a reimagined version of AoE 2) and CoH 3 (which is half a game with the rest to be develped sometime in the future) other RTS titles appeared and went away again in a week
@@Ianbus123 Ahh in case of emergency there are always the classics to fall back to: Empire at War, Aoe2 (definitive edition) StarCraft (if my mental is up for it) Stronghold and the Paradox Quartet of Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron and Stellaris.
The Kickstarter is ending soon I think. People are pushing for one more faction (#7 I think!). They've definitely done well and there's a lot of interest so it will be cool to see their full vision realised.
i played alot alot of hour on C&C,Starcraft but now i playing BAR * beyond all reason** and for an open source**FREE** dont forget it , it really impressive i spend lot of time on this now and the AI it pretty good too you got the Regular AI*barb* play like another experienced player the Raptor AI & savenger AI that play different like Defence and very very hard way i wish they continue to update it and become more popular
Yes - there is plenty to enjoy in BAR and it's all f2p! It will be interesting to see if they take the raptor stuff further and add a full 3rd playable faction. The arm/core being very similar was always a criticism of TA/SupComm/BAR
Immortal Gates of Pyre is the most promising for me. already tested it, some features are awesomes and co-op will be so cool with what they plan to do.
Hey - thank you. If I can get in to some of them early (such as closed alphas/betas) then I would probably do full videos focusing on individual small games. The problem is that a lot of larger creators get early access to these titles and make decent videos showcasing them, so I don't know if there's much audience left after that. I'll just need to get bigger (and have access earlier) myself! Otherwise, I'll probably be more likely to feature bigger games or include the indie ones in compilation videos like this one.
Good to hear it! I have started to drift into that large group of people that watch religiously (SC:BW and SC2) but don't really play any more... What do you play - coop primarily?
I applaud them for trying to actually innovate and drive the genre forward, but for some reason it just didn't really "grab" me in the same way TA and SupComm did - which is a shame. Keeping a very close eye on Industrial Annihilation... What did you think of it?
Do people play RTS much on mobile devices? I must admit I am not very informed about it... I thought it was more turn based stuff like those "clash" games.
And every company acquired by activision or EA in the past 15 years or so. Infinity Ward (Medal of Honor and the original CoD) is one that stands out for me.
My 'problem' with both Zerospac and Stormgate is that they remind me too much of Starcraft and I still am heavily engaged with that game on the PvE side of things. Also if there's grandmaster-style PvP player in leading positions I have to admit my hype dies quite a bit because thats the less interesting side to me with regards to RTSs. Out of the other ones listed, I've never been one for warhammer, total annihilation or warcraft, but I am quite fond of the old C&C games so Tempest Rising has my nr 1 mark and Global Conflagration (if this will eventually come out) is numero 2 as the (in my view) spiritual successor to C&C Generals.
The way i see how rts games are going to develop is by looking how pro gamers are playing today - and creating mechanics that would allow avarage players to do the same.
I think Stormgate is taking that approach - although they are trying to appeal to both crowds by saying you can still do all the "mechanical actions" if you wish to.
i also grew up on totalanihilation... but somehow i am more oriented to great story games (so tempest, homeworld and stormgate are my favourites) and after i finish them, i will ofcourse continue playing online games for years as usual , so age of cores :D
I wonder if RTS is the best venue for story-driven games or if turn based strategy/RPG is better? ZeroSpace is trying to combine RTS with RGP story-driven elements (decisions that change the story etc.)
Dunno :/ i like story games in general, and i like rts, so having both is cool. About turn based... i can never decide, i think i dont like them, but everytime i play them i love them 😅
@@Ianbus123 Why would RTS not be a good Venue? Starcraft II and CnC games did a good job putting a story in RTS. Also, turnbased in my book is not Rts, RTS is called REAL-time for a reason.
The time sensitive element of RTS makes it a bit stressful for trying to enjoy a story or some casual play I think @@skorpion7132 Obvious games like C&C were famous for their cutscenes between missions etc. but in terms of actual storytelling combined with the gameplay I don't think the genre has gone much beyond some basic scripting in the likes of WC3.
You say that you're a fan of TA, but then when talking about a "shared persistent galaxy", you take the example of SC2's coop rather than Cavedog's TA's Boneyard's Galactic War (or those that TA-derived games did like Zero-K' PlanetWars) ?! :p (Also, speaking of branching missions in RTS, a reminder that SC1 already had them, and I remember a *particularly* well crafted fan-made campaign which was really wild in how branched it was !)
SC2 co-op is just fresh in the mind I guess. It was the standout feature in later years and both Stormgate + ZeroSpace have leading people from the SC2 coop team trying to implement something similar in their upcoming titles!
@@Ianbus123 It's essentially abandonware, but the community has kept it alive, even has some excellent mods (Age of the Ring is the one I'd recommend). Google how to install and you can find how to get it up and running.
TA, Suprême Com. line was good to, we liked the TA medieval succesor, but limit cap was poopoo. Cant remember the name!? Tempest rising look realy great. I miss those good times with my friends. With easy mouse and keyboard integration on console now, RTS game will soon rise to the top again....🎉🎉
was surprised not to see Silica in the list, considering it is not only an RTS but an FPS. its indev at the moment but it shows promise. one of the major problems with it right now is optimization; RTS is a lot more demanding when its running in an FPS engine with FPS players running around on terrain designed for a FPS.
It was not intentional. I just didn't think to include it. Planning to do a video showcasing the recent TA-inspired titles such as Sanctuary, Zero K, BAR, Industrial Annihilation!
I've always enjoyed RTS games, but the things I like least about them is if you really want to play competitively, it's all about the actions per minute. I don't like the micromanage-y aspect of RTS'. I hate multitasking and I've never been good at it. I'd rather focus more on planning/strategy/tactics than bouncing around a map, managing a base, or sending hoards of units to their death. It feels more like work than a game.
I think ZeroSpace and Stormgate are looking at ways to make it less mechanical/macro based. I know what you mean though. I used to win in SC2 just by making more stuff and forcing constant fights because people couldn't keep up. Brood War even moreso. Less strategy and just realtime :P
True, And while I like Starcraft II immensely, I was far happier playing the campaign or custom-made campaigns on a relatively relaxing difficulty than going on ladder trying to defend an arbitrary bracket-position.
@@Ianbus123 Arguably another issue I then have with Zerospace in particular then. Not a great surprise if grandmasters are leading the development... wrong aspect to balance the game around in my book.

They also have him on board for Stormgate so we get a double treat! Hell March :)))
Tossing out a comment for Industrial Aniihilation! Its the successor to Planetary Aniihilation and looks AMAZING! Also, Age of Cores looks similiar to Starsector.
The trailer dropped just after I made this video but I'm definitely going to be covering it! I'll look in to Starsector too.
Thanks for watching, appreciate it
Beyond All Reason is already the best (new) RTS!
True, but it's still in alpha. I hope to be able to cover it launching on Steam soon...
Tempest Rising's music better remind you of command and conquer, it's by Frank Klepacki, who is the man behind C&C's soundtrack
Zero space looks promicing. Co-op sounds interesting. I'm kind of hyped up.
Since I made the video they revealed the last main faction - Legion!
I love Beyond All Reason.
I did another video all about BAR!
"Battling in blank spaces..." Yeah, that's the nature of outer SPACE, that's the point. :)
Looks like Two Worlds has brought them more commercial success. They're pumping content for that...
Silica should 100% be on this list. It's so close to Dune 2 and the FPS mechanic is really cool.
I'm planning to cover it soon! Thanks for taking a look
21 years is almost 20 years? :P
Cool list, thanks!
I think I must have been basing it on the original planned release date... or something ^^
Executive assault is my current fav indie RTS title
I recognised you name from the top 20 leaderboard :)
@Ianbus123 yeah I been helping find bugs and toss ideas around. Then stuck around lol. If you need anything just give me a shout in Asylum or in the community chat
Asylum - that'll be the one that dominates every planet on the galaxy map then...@@jesseskinner8984
I was quite surprised when I got to the mothership menu and saw the global chat + the top 20 leaderboard.
Hows it go, you can lead a horse to water... lol 😆
being this vocal and community-centric is a book example of double-edged sword
that being said, let's hope the other edge is still dull and not really cared for :)
No mention of Nebulous Fleet Command :(
quite literally my favorite RTS full stop
Oh that really looks a bit similar to ageof ores. Btw ageofcores is also playable on phones, and very nicely optimised
@@tomaszachar809 I didn't know that Age of Cores was also on mobile. Thanks for the tip.
Ah that's really interesting @@canertwo
FTL is one of the best games I've played in recent years. Don't Starve Together was another small dev team title which I got 100s of hours of fun from.
I am planning to work on the vocals but I also wonder if it relates to settings (including the room proofing etc.). I go to old videos on channels I think sound good voiceover wise and they are nothing like what you hear today.
Total Annihilation is so great. Still play the escalation mod to this day.
Love it!
A new one to add to the list from the guys who worked on SupCom and Planetary Annihilation, Industrial Annihilation which looks like Planetary Annihilation with a bit off Factorio sprinkled in
Yeah it's a really interesting idea. I have been following their YT channel but the videos are very short so far. Hoping to see more soon...
Most interesting so far is the last one. Have soft spot for such small project.
You can even talk to the developer on the Discord :)
Nice to see another attempt to innovate in the genre.
supreme commander 2 was probably peak RTS gaming. less complicated then 1 but till more large scale then most RTS games these days.
"I'm excited by this", he says very unexcited. :)
I'm trying :( I don't naturally sound very excitable
Where is a link to age of cores? Didn't find any info on google
ageofcores . com
2024 is looking like a big year for the genre. Now let's just hope some of them are actually good!
Tempest rising is going to be crazy
True - although it's been a bit quiet content wise lately. Hope to see more videos soon.
No question. Total Annihilation is the greatest RTS ever made. No idea why they haven't made another one even more epic.
Agreed! Still a fun play today but thankfully some new successors are on the way...
KKND 3 and Dungeon Keeper 3, I will wait for you :')
:(
great video, really think it could have used some background music or other noise
Hey - thank you.
I started adding some background music in a few more recent videos, such as the BAR one and Medieval vs Sci-fi. What do you think?
Can't find any homepage or any hint of Age of Cores actually existing. No results in search.
Hey Marc-Joseph
It is just ageofcores . com

It really does. I struggled trying Kingdoms recently though.

Hello, could you provide the links to the Age of Cores website and discord? Thanks.
Hey, if you google "ageofcores" (one word) the top 2 hits will be the game and the official YT channel for it :)
Thanks @@Ianbus123
Np. Not sure about direct links and promotion etc. on YT but it should be searchable @@rebelmerlin902

Where can we find Age of Cores? possible release date?
It's playable at the moment
ageofcores . com
I think it's still in the alpha stages
I don't have high hopes for Sanctuary, but if it delivers on the promise, it'll be the best RTS, since it copies SupCom and not TA.
I'm really looking forward to dust front. I'm surprised it wasn't on the list.
It's on the list for the next video :) Good shout
great reviews and btw good voice. Do you plan to continue making smaller scifi/indie games reviews? I am interested in the topic so I would subscribe
@@Ianbus123 Speaking of indies, you missed out Global Conflagration, it just had a demo at strategy game fest.
True, that is one which has completely passed me by @@CTLN7
I might work towards a second edition of this focusing more heavily on smaller titles.
@@Ianbus123 Another great one is Godsworn.
I think I will do a similar video that features indie games exclusively in future. I need to do some research and expand the list first!
Dust Front RTS is also worth checking out
Any news on a release date? Or a demo?
@@Ianbus123sadly not that I have seen. I did wish list it on Steam so if there are updates Steam should notify me or at least I know where to check.
One name: "Nebulous: Fleet Command"
I've got it on my list to take a closer look!
I hope Tempest Rising has a jukebox, I really miss being able to pick which music to be kicking ass to.
With Frank Klepacki making the music I'm expecting them all to be bangers
@@Ianbus123 he's not making all of them, but having played the demo I have faith they will all be bangers.
I would love a new Empire earth game
We all miss the old rts we only ask for big map big space base building with deep story
No mention for Falling Frontier? Upcoming impressive looking logistical RTS in Space?
Somehow that one passed me by...
I am following it now and hope to cover it in an upcoming video :) Thanks for flagging it and thanks for watching!
@@Ianbus123 Awesome, happy to help. I like the credits you gave for the Zero game as well, mentioning the SC2 pros as well as GiantGrantGames.

I saw you mention Total Annihilation. I was just wondering if I could get your thoughts on Planetary Annihilation?
I applaud them for trying to actually innovate and drive the genre forward, but for some reason it just didn't really "grab" me in the same way TA and SupComm did - which is a shame. Keeping a very close eye on Industrial Annihilation...
What did you think of it?
Next make recommendation RTS game for android phone
Do people play RTS much on mobile devices? I must admit I am not very informed about it...
I thought it was more turn based stuff like those "clash" games.
Age of cores sadly has no sound...
The latest I heard is that it is being implemented this month.
lets get a moment of silence for Westwood.
And every company acquired by activision or EA in the past 15 years or so. Infinity Ward (Medal of Honor and the original CoD) is one that stands out for me.
Falling frontier, go look it up. Amazing work.
Will do - thank you!
Unfortunately Blizzard are no longer engaged with SC/SC2 so I think a lot of people are putting their hopes and dreams into ZeroSpace and Stormgate :O
Was really hoping to see Silica on this list
I have it on the list for an upcoming video covering 2024 RTS titles. It's going to be a similar format but much expanded. There's a lot to cover!
100% Total Annihilation is the best of all time.
Amen
i also grew up on totalanihilation... but somehow i am more oriented to great story games (so tempest, homeworld and stormgate are my favourites) and after i finish them, i will ofcourse continue playing online games for years as usual , so age of cores :D
About turn based... i can never decide, i think i dont like them, but everytime i play them i love them 😅
I want a new X-com game with more story@@tomaszachar809
@@Ianbus123 Why would RTS not be a good Venue? Starcraft II and CnC games did a good job putting a story in RTS.
Also, turnbased in my book is not Rts, RTS is called REAL-time for a reason.
The time sensitive element of RTS makes it a bit stressful for trying to enjoy a story or some casual play I think @@skorpion7132
Obvious games like C&C were famous for their cutscenes between missions etc. but in terms of actual storytelling combined with the gameplay I don't think the genre has gone much beyond some basic scripting in the likes of WC3.
suprised that you didnt mention Sins of the solar empire: Rebellion. Looks like they are doing 2nd chapter too
I see it's in early access on Epic. Will take a look for sure!
you didnt talk about Sanctuary: Shattered Sun (Supcom successor) , Manor lords, and dust front! btw they also just announced Industrial Annihilation
I need to look more closely at Manor Lords. Are the battles RTS like Total War games?
total war like@@Ianbus123
Nice @@terrorgheist4755
You say that you're a fan of TA, but then when talking about a "shared persistent galaxy", you take the example of SC2's coop rather than Cavedog's TA's Boneyard's Galactic War (or those that TA-derived games did like Zero-K' PlanetWars) ?! :p
(Also, speaking of branching missions in RTS, a reminder that SC1 already had them, and I remember a *particularly* well crafted fan-made campaign which was really wild in how branched it was !)
SC2 co-op is just fresh in the mind I guess. It was the standout feature in later years and both Stormgate + ZeroSpace have leading people from the SC2 coop team trying to implement something similar in their upcoming titles!
ZeroSpace looks great
It managed to break another stretch goal just before the Kickstarter ended so we're going to get an extra (7th) mercenary faction :O
Battle for Middle Earth (2 probably) is the best RTS ever made
I must admit I haven't tried it - and we can't play it now because online support was shut down - is that right? :(

There is a Discord community if you're interested in learning more!
Broken Arrow also looks promising
I'm looking in to it now - interesting for sure!
Mod in Starwars, Starcraft, and Freespace!
The mod.io support is going to be epic
was surprised not to see Silica in the list, considering it is not only an RTS but an FPS. its indev at the moment but it shows promise. one of the major problems with it right now is optimization; RTS is a lot more demanding when its running in an FPS engine with FPS players running around on terrain designed for a FPS.
True :( I plan to feature it soon
Did you omit sanctuary and was that intentional?
It was not intentional. I just didn't think to include it.
Planning to do a video showcasing the recent TA-inspired titles such as Sanctuary, Zero K, BAR, Industrial Annihilation!
Sins of a Solar Empire 2
Also ageofcores is more about tactics, also called chill rts, since all units follow you, and you focus onnstrategy, upgrades, techs and economy
play as an eco player in Bar then not frontline less micro more building
True, And while I like Starcraft II immensely, I was far happier playing the campaign or custom-made campaigns on a relatively relaxing difficulty than going on ladder trying to defend an arbitrary bracket-position.
@@Ianbus123 Arguably another issue I then have with Zerospace in particular then. Not a great surprise if grandmasters are leading the development... wrong aspect to balance the game around in my book.
Zero-K still so good. Been good. Sad the pop count is so low.
Yeah it needs a boost. A big patch or a tournament perhaps.
Homeworld 3 40k mods, let's go.

The RTS is worth a shot - looks great, story is excellent, very well put together game. Just wasn't a fan of the heavy unit micromanagement focus, as I prefer larger scale high strategy type stuff.
Would love someone to bring back Starships Unlimited 3 and start modding it up.
That's a game I haven't thought about in a while! I wonder what the dev team (Basically Andrew) are up to nowdays. I can't get the ApeZone website to load.
The best RTS games are StarCraft like, Homeworld Like, and the old CnC like not the new once.
There is a lot of room for innovating the genre though I think? We haven't explored story-driven RTS much.
