Battle Aces Has Huge Potential (and a Problem to Solve...)
Battle Aces is looking to revolutionise the RTS genre with a number of what I think are very interesting ideas. Fixed match lengths, automated resource collection, simplified unit construction and research - all with strategic deck building and planning layered on top. The second closed beta phase has given loads more players a chance to try the game, including me.
With the project being spearheaded by Blizzard alumni and StarCraft II Grandmaster, David Kim, excitement is building. It’s also being featured heavily by the likes of Tasteless, Artosis and PiG. It's emerging as perhaps the most promising competitive real-time strategy (RTS) game in development. Let’s find out if the hype is j...

Is RTS the Next Dead Gaming Genre?

Real-time strategy (RTS) games have been around for a long time, enjoying massive popularity at times - but is the party over? Triple A studios don’t really touch the genre any more, and some of its most successful crowd funded launches have been massive disappointments. In trying to answer this question, we look at other genres which have faced the same challenge for relevance. Some have adapt...

The End of APM?

Sci-fi vs Medieval RTS - Why Setting Matters

    There are moments when you watch a video like this when you just say to yourself "wtf, did he really just say that?" and this video has one so bad I stopped watching. From the very start I knew the three games would be C&C, Brood War, and TA. When you instead pivoted to Red Alert it was a ridiculous decision. C&C1 is indisputably more significant of a game. To then also downplay Tiberium Sun and RA3, while not even mentioning Tiberium Wars or RA2 is baffling. They were innovative games, and you already admitted RA was not. What a contradiction. Ok, dumb move but let's continue. Brood war, I'm with you on this... until... SC2 is a failure? W.T.F are you talking about? Unless you only played WoL, and never HotS, or LotV, idk wtf you are talking about. It's widely seen as incredibly balanced and effective competitive game. You sir, are an idiot. And I stopped watching.

    Its a literal joke. According to what Alanah Pearce said, the general baseline is a 7/10 for a game thats functional so IGN hasnt even followed their own grading scale as a 5/10 would indicate its barely functioning. Then again these are the low iq people who gave Dragon Age Veilguard a 9/10 when that game is as dull and cringe as a kids afterschool special.

    Look the solution is pretty obvious to me. Every player gets access to every unit. New units can be locked initially and unlocked via leveling up or some challenge, i.e Unlocked via playing the game. Monetization happens on the cosmetic level and you pay for different unit skins. There is just no way on planet earth that locking units behind a paywall is going to avoid being p2w. Even IF everything was perfectly balanced in reality, you'd never avoid the player PERCEPTION of imbalance. And that's what would kill your game.

    Do the different factions have faction abilities/commander abilities as well as unit varients? Also does the game feature a Strategems type loadout function, ahead of battles? Or just the deck cards? If Wasps are becoming a meta unit, then their supply value needs to be modified to limit the number available to the player. Surely this would reduce the appeal and balance things? As for monitization, I don't know what the list price of the game is likely to be but what if premium content could only be unlocked proportionate to the number of achievements or no. of hours you've put into the game. The sense of reward, would still be there and the devs would be eeking out a profit over a longer period of time but it would avoid P2W from day one. Just some thoughts, pleased I'm not expected to solve this problem 😂

    • @Ianbus123
      @Ianbus123 9 дней назад

      Everyone is the same in terms of faction/commander so all the customisation comes from your 8 units chosen for your unit deck, and then your playstyle ingame (expanding, tech, how you micro units etc.). Sadly wasps are an early game unit so their supply doesn't really factor in. A wider variety of core units, some which counter them a bit, would be nice. I don't think the units are too powerful just too influential if that makes sense.

  • @Mildewed
    @Mildewed 10 дней назад

    Your "deck" of selected units mitigates the p2w effect of strong individual units being locked behind a battle-pass since presumably things will have counters if the game is supposed to be balanced at any rate so knowing there is a meta of using what ever new unit is powerful in a battle-pass should self correct when people start accounting for it by putting in a counter unit. The power of expensive cards in CCGs behind a paywall seemingly hasn't affected the success of the genre, as long as buy X unit and win +% of your matches doesn't become demonstrably true and the battle-passes aren't excessively expensive I don't really see a problem with this system. League doesn't give you every hero like Dota2 does, some people prefer dota2 because of this difference but League still seems to have the bigger community overall so it can work.

    How would you go about solving the monetization problem? The comparisons to MOBA games are obvious in terms of them periodically introducing new champions/heroes to play with and these being painfully slow to unlock (or you throw money at them). The issue for an RTS like Battle Aces is that putting actual units behind a paywall is more like the equivalent of limiting the items a player could buy with their gold in a game of LoL or DotA... (credit: someone on the Battle Aces Subreddit).

    We really need some online RTS games that fit into a limited and predictable 25 to 45 minute time limit. CnC and Starcraft derived gameplay is stale. Total Annihilation style games drag on too long for modern lifestyles. Maybe have outcomes be scored rather than dependent on a defined win/loss condition. This would encourage people to attack throughout not sit around building passively. The time limit would prevent the bloat that tends to define the more simulation style RTS games.
