- A big shakeup from my normal videos, A video essay of Fear and Hunger. Fear & Hunger is a 2018 horror rpg maker game that I had to do a little video essay on. I watch a lot of them and It's Truly deserving of it.

In case anyone didn't know (but cares) F+H1 is actually based somewhat on the Golden Age arc of Berserk! Le'garde is supposed to be Griffeth and the Outlander character possibly a reference Guts. D'arce is def referencing Casca and even Le'garde's imprisonment is alluding to the imprisonment of Griffeth (and Trortur being just like the torturer in that prison)

Regarding the clone complaint. As much as I agree with you on it being an initial secret handhold for people who know how to play around with the game, I do believe it is to prevent soft locking in hard mode where you cannot get party members outside of skeletons ghouls and blood golems (and you obviously cannot sacrifice yourself). You could use a ghoul for the torment meter section but if your playing without necromancy or have no ghouls in your party/all spawns of them have been killed you can’t get to the main tormented one fight. I’m assuming that’s why it’s a feature cuz getting necromancy relies on rng unless you got it from the dark priests backstory choices
Sure there are mechanically and atmospherically better ways of getting around without feeling copped out, but that is the reason why it’s there
There's also the implied canon lore. Based on things that happen in the sequel, everyone gets their S endings (only accessible in hard mode) except one person, who has to have gotten the A ending, meaning none of them can die to the torment device. Zombies could still work for that though, especially since it's the dark priest whose S ending requires him to gather the souls and sit on the throne
The lore for this game is actually insane. Crazy how deep everything goes along with all the little details included

The music that got to me 5he most was the title screen knocking, only to hear it again much deeper in. So much more muffled and distant, that gave me chills honestly.
About the "not skinning your party member", look at this in role way, you are literally skinning yourself in front of you, you put yourself there and see expresionless how you are torn apart.....hurts just thinking about it
3:22 “Survival Horror” is actually a specific genre of horror games, with the Resident Evil games being the most famous example of this. Its horror games with an emphasis on resource management and making it to the end of the game, in other words… surviving!
I remember when I first heard of Fear and Hunger in a video of "what if" for the characters. I ended up getting one of the biggest spoilers for the whole game 😢 but it got me interested
7:15 to me the squeaking is that of a rusty metal gate. Maybe it’s also mixed with the trilling of a Geiger counter?
Answering your question re: "Evil cat" (around 24:33) - it is reference to Pocketcat, a character in both F+H1 and F+H2:Termina. Pocketcat in game 1 (spoilers) is trying to get children to prevent them from being vessels for a new god to ascend. Pocketcat's god hates humanity and their desire to take the power of the gods through ascension (though it makes them new gods, not ascended gods - long story there). pocketcat specifically wants the little girl that you can find early in the dungeon in F+H1, offering something good if you give her to him. There is a little ambiguity early on what he does with the children that he aquires (it's gross, as expected - but you are left to wonder "does he k*ll them?). the scene mentioned in the Kingdom of Rondon flashback scene is showing that he has been taking children for a long time and does k*ll them. In F+H2, Pocketcat again is a servant of his god, trying to prevent the ascenion of humans, so this indicates that he has some extended lifespan (F+H1 in 1590, F+H2 in 1942) and he is continuing to get vessels. Interestingly, in F+H2, (major spoiler), the doctor character Daan, if not recruited or played as the main character, will transform into Pocketcat as the evil of the battle royale festival progress. Daan's soul-type allows him to be a desireable vessel and there is a lot of lore stuff there.
I think it's the only game, where sex can kill you. Like, not when you are raped, instead when you doing it being active one...

Excellent video. I discovered the game a couple weeks ago and have been playing it ever since. I normally despise trial-and-error in games, but I'm absolutely loving this despite trial-and-error being essentially its core mechanic.
I agree completely about the audio and soundtrack. It's brutally stark and just about perfect.

I always felt like the Mahab're Streets song sounded like the dinner table of the New Gods watching you. Apart from the whispers, those noises in the quiet section sound like silverware tapping against a glass or plate.

Painting Fear and Hunger as this obscure gem few have played at this point is pushing it. Like yeah, It's not a AAA game, but it isn't exactly unknown either. More than a few popular YTers have done full playthroughs and at least a couple of lore vids or video essays get uploaded weekly. I mean, even before the 2022-2023 hype it had a pretty dedicated fanbase. Myself included.
It definitely exploded within the past year, but to be fair: A lot of people have heard about it, but far fewer have played it.
I do see your point though, it's by no means an unknown game anymore.

this kinda reminds me of the SMT series, maybe the designs/artstyle and themes. i would highly recommend SMT4 if you enjoy JRPGs, probably my favorite one ive ever played

You need to edit some of the mistakes in pronunciation since it breaks the flow.

Why is it everyone believes the Crown Mauler is a Pyramid Head when he is clearly closer to Reaper from the Persona series?
Pyramid Head is an unstoppable (literally invincible, he only dies by his own hands never the players) executioner the main characters frustrations and want for punishment for his sins.
Reaper is a “get off my floor” overpowered but able to be killed stalker in Persona. Get this, Reaper appears if you are around a floor too long, is insanely powerful, can be killed but it’s never advised to fight enemy that stalks the player with an audio stinger for when he arrives and can be reset to leave by changing areas…in another RPG game, with a 4 player party system…that this game references as well. Also are Crows not signs of the Reaper (death) in most instances or something?
I see far more Reaper in this Crow than Pyramid Head. If we just place any stalker character that’s similar than Mr. X should be included too. Just saying, I don’t see the connection so many people are trying to make there and ignore this one.
The creator of the series said he’s inspired by pyramid head on Twitter.

Omori is a game that threw me for a loop. Omori gives happy wonderland vibes only to be extremely dark later in the game! Even after finishing it I couldn't stop thinking about the hidden horror I found in that game.
@timwest277 the twist takes several hours to get to…and the second, even bigger twist comes several hours after that.
You just have to suffer through the beginning hours of cookie cutter anime bullshit to get to the good stuff, but there is a point to it.

Great vid, tho i disagree strongly with the message you got from that ending. Its obviously a lot for a YT comment but intent matters, and things have a way of interacting and coming around over time thats hard or even impossible to see beforehand, but is shown plainly eventually. But its also a nuanced topic, with exceptions and addendums. Actually the second game seems to show some of that very thing, as Legarde burns out, his arrogance and lack of humility bring his and others downfall. Interesting stuff, and i will say i subscribe to a classic Buddhist philosophy regarding most of this kind of stuff, being pretty devout, but even still to me the initial concept portrayed comes across as naive and something a young and inexperienced person would think or espouse (or of course a manial megalomaniac or cult leader lol)

The game has a very specific, and terribly human, horror. The entire point is that you’re in the fucking worst, most horrifyingly desolate of hope place on the planet.
Quite a bit would have been changed if it was removed from the game, and if you can’t see that, you’re not the intended audience, and in my opinion also incredibly inept.

I could go in depth about the nuances of a man putting sa into horror without ever fearing victimhood in that way himself, but I imagine that you would not be very receptive nor would you comprehend it properly.

I didn’t “enjoy” that part of the game, I however understood that it was required to communicate how bleak the game is supposed to make your position appear. The feelings you have while experiencing the game would be nowhere near the same if it was all cut out. The difference in atmosphere between the first and second game is astronomical due to this exact change.
We can have horror without explicit imagery, but we also CAN have horror with explicit imagery, it creates completely different games that don’t exist solely to please you. You’re a spoiled POS and complete buffoon to think that your opinion should be pandered to by everyone, and that other people aren’t allowed to appreciate the creators vision for a world you had nothing to do with the creation of.
