Y'know, they may be way louder, way less efficient, less powerful, and less safe, but old engines just sound so much more ALIVE. Imagine being on an airfield in WW2 and hearing a fleet of RRs or Merlins start up. That had to be an amazing sound.
Airplane don't need torque, the just need to run really fast. ; that's why in a movie and in real life if sumthin gets caught in the rotor, it dies and it's also why they stall ALOT too
Imagine trying to start one of these in the war after clearing packed snow out of the cowling from a long cold blizzard night and the enemy is closing in fast you got to get that prop spinning that cold wind blowing then you got to climb behind it rev it up and take flight with all that cold air blowing on you. Hard times.
I’ve been an auto mechanic for 22 years, and don’t get me wrong... I love the sound of a big block Chevy with a cam in it, but this shit is off the charts bad ass. I want to learn how to fly a plane more than just about anything right now.
Hi Folks, thanks so much for these great videos AND the info with each one I have learned more in the last few minutes than years of aviation interest, great sounds and well done to the "starters" for all their hard work AND the guys who so painstakingly restored these engines to run so very well! Love this.

the Gnome Rotary Radial sounds like a mix of a large caliber machine gun firing and the 30mm rotary cannon on the A-10 Warthog firing when the engine starts, gets brought up to speed, and then operates for a bit

Brits sure designed some very excellent engines. Our P 51 was a dog until it got the British engine. For that matter, most of my favorite aircraft are British engineered
This compilation is one of the best i¨ve seen because of the uniqueness and rarety of some engines and its showing of the bare, open functionality. Confratulations on a great job and idea. Thank you much.
That Grumman Agcat at the very beginning brings back memories. Many years ago when I was a kid I used to fill the DDT tanks on three of them spraying around home.
Makes you wonder how the allies ever won the war doesn't it! Greatest respect for the men that kept them working and the brave pioneering souls who flew them. Lest we never forget them all.
5:01 Why does a German Fokker D.VIII have a French Gnome? A: The Le Rhône 9J is produced in France by Gnome et Rhône. Le Rhône 9J engines were produced under license in Great Britain by W.H. Allen Son & Company of Bedford, and in Germany by Motorenfabrik Oberursel where it was sold as the Oberursel Ur.II.

Just the coolest eh?
Piston planes aren't necessarily less efficient
With older engines, you have to wind the rubberband up inside by hand, ya

hand starting a propeller is probably one of the most terrifying things for me.
OOPS I TRIPPED HAHA SILLY ME IM SO QUIRKY 🤪🤪
I have done it many times and it is something you must be sure about before starting.
Most people don't do it correctly. You should have one leg that throws you away from the prop when performing this operation.
What about hand stopping one
Also satisfying when it comes to start
You just gotta love the sounds of those old engines.

Those ww1 gnome rotaries sound beautiful!
I'm still amazed at the engines that spun around the crank.
You'll be even more amazed by the diarrhoea they caused. Constant loss oiling system using castor oil...
Rather start a rotary engine on a trailer stand... Having to fly with one.... No brakes, full throttle could be a real challenge...
How would you get a reliable fuel line to them, that's what I want to know
iirc they are like two strokes, air fuel mixture enters crankcase via carb, so carb and subsequent fuel line stay stationary@@Englishsea24

That Grumman Agcat at the very beginning brings back memories. Many years ago when I was a kid I used to fill the DDT tanks on three of them spraying around home.
Actually I think they were Grumman AgWagons. It was fifty years ago and my memory is slipping.
One fella flew in once to my local airport, and I had to hand start his propeller. If I didn't lose my fingers then, I don't think I ever will.
