"Brute strength and awkwardness" is a phrase that we heard a lot while growing up at Dad's race shop. He used it to describe a powerful yet ill-handling machine; or, more often, the driving technique of a hero driver attempting to cope with one. Both definitions rattled around in our brain as we traveled to Virginia International Raceway (VIR) to drive the 2008 Dodge Viper SRT-10.

I would rather have a Viper than a gtr, corvette, lambo like all these youtubers be doing.
Yep and their is so many miss conceptions about the viper like poor handling and being unpredictable
"It was never a truck engine"- check out Jay Leno's video on the 2013 Viper, someone who's been with the company since the beginning said that. Never a truck engine.
I can speak from experience since I own a 2008 ACR, that these cars are undescribable, absolutley stunning in every way. Viper did a great job, congrats to you and to all my fellow Viper owners ; )
For the people who like the Viper which our father designed. It won the Nurburgring record with 7.22.1 over a bugatti veyron and many other cars and it holds the record.
I have a 08 ACR and it is great. Looks fantastic and is CRAZY fast. Wish everyone could drive one and feel the power of it.
And I am here 2 years later. My god this video brings me back to my childhood memories.

In fact, I have a knack for the Dodge Viper SRT-10.
OH yeah...also...the reason why the Vette had a good 0-60 time is cuz the 1st gear was MEGA long...in the Viper...just for the 0-60 they changed the gear ratio a lil bit in the 1st gear...
...plus look at the slalom test...it looks so neutral through it
I still can't fathom how people can say the Viper is "bad handling" when the official big-bad chart of Nurburgring lap times clearly shows the Viper ACR being faster than the Enzo. The Enzo, by the way, has more power than the Viper, so that means that it must have made all that time up through the turns.
There may be faster cars, quicker cars, better looking cars...hell there ARE faster, quicker, better-looking cars. There are plenty of "better" cars than the Viper. But, none have I ever loved as much. As a kid, I lusted after the 2nd generation GTS Coupe. Then, SRT-10, took a while to grow on me but I grew to love it, too. Once they came out with the 3rd gen. coupe, then I was smitten. And the last generation, my favorite. God, this car does something to me and I've never even ridden in one...
i got the chance to sit in one of these a few years back and no doubt about it these are beautiful cars

I'm 6'7, and I can personally attest thanks to getting to just sit in one at a dealership - even if I have the money to buy one, I'll never do so, impossible to fit in it.
It will be sad if Dodge finally stops production. It has been a good run, but hopefully they will make another high end car to take it's place. Chryshler nearly made a car called the Firepower that puts the SRT 8 engine in the viper frame. Let's hope they make something similar.
RUclips doesn't always work properly:) Oh and you're talking absolute sense, but I was not thinking about ACR Viper when I was posting my comment, because ACR is more a track car, which is also legal on normal roads so you can drive it to the track and do a blasting lap, while GT-R is Grand tourer, which offers alien levels of acceleration and cornering. The bottom line is the germans and italians have some stiff comptetinion these days, because the zr1 is also coming.

Stock vs Stock the Viper has more RWHP and better 1/4 mile times.
It beat the ZR1 in the 1/4 mile on Top Gear and slalom at 74+ mph. Very quick!!!!

Everyone saying you still want a Vette, is insane. The 2013 SRT Viper GTS makes 640hp, and eats the ZR1. The older, pre-2008 Vipers made about 510hp, while the Vette in those years, was making in the 400's. Vipers have always had very durable engines, and transmissions. They're truly in indestructible American-made car. The engine can handle around 1200hp, with nothing but a cam, and a supercharger, period. All you would need to do is put a better clutch in it, to accomodate the extra 700hp.
Yeah the gen 5 viper is great but bang for your buck at gen 3/4 with boltons will destroy the new vette. Put 15k into the motor of a gen 3 and you're at 700+hp

That's actually done on purpose. The rear tires on these cars have to be bigger because no more than 50% of the weight is over the front wheels. The weight then shifts more to the rear as the car accelerates. And since the car is RWD, the rear tires need more grip to handle power and cornering simultaneously.

yeah the vette may only have a v-8 but, its almost as big as the vipers v-10! The viper have an 8.4ltr v-10. the vette has i think its a 7.0 or 7.1ltr v-8 so it not much smaller (displacmentwise) as the v-10.
other words, its a perfect racecar after you tune the 5th gear, btw noones giving me a ticket in that thing, unless they have a spike belt.
Jay Leno said himself in his section of Popular Mechanics that "the corvette ZR1 wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the Viper."
Vipers rock, it's main competitor (the ZR1) might be fast because of driving aids like traction control, ABS and all that stuff

Suspension, brakes and aero make a huge difference. Isn't the ZR1 a Z06 with better brakes, suspension, aero, and engine?
There has been no direct comparison, but the ACR is probably faster than the ZR1, it's more track oriented. I'd group the ACR with GT2 and Scuderia based on lap times and car stats.
The ZR1 is likely to be just below that level, and just above cars like the SRT-10, F430, 911 Turbo, etc. It was designed as a very fast road car, GM has made this clear.

Yeah i think chrysler feel's pasionatte about making the viper considering the fact that the viper is getting better and better these day's this will bring their manufactor's confidence.
Ah, I remember this video from 5 years ago. Used to be a big fan of this car, even got a ride in one locally in CT( incredibly rare here) but 2 weeks later he died in that vehicle in a car crash.

Dude they are not dropping viper, viper is a separate entity under dodge. Where dodge is in trouble Viper is not also Viper is getting a make over and it will be called SRT10. The New Viper is really awesome with a new motor in it I am not sure but its a V12 and suppose to come out in 2012. Vette is also getting a Make over I like both cars.
Where else can you get a 600 horsepower car for under 100 thousand dollars? You've got to love it.

Yeah...its more about the different people that review them. The people @ edmunds are old people...so dont expect record crushing perfs...if you look at those launches...look at ALL the wheel spin. when they tested the Z06...they MADE sure they minimized that...

yeah your absolutly right. .99 g's on the skid is awful. so is that 74.2 through the slalom. its so much worse than the .92 that the gt-r put down or the .86 that the m3 puts down on the skid

true true...however you gotta take into consideration that the viper has 10 cylinders over the corvette's 8.
who said anything about a cushy ride? A Z06 does not have a cushy ride, nor does the ZR1, but yet they still dont break your back as an everyday driver either. If the ZR1 manages to come just slightly behind the ACR without destroying the driver, then what's the problem with a managable ride? All im saying is, the ACR is not a car you would drive around on weekends on the road just to relax. Compared to the ZR1, its is strictly a track car whereas the ZR1 can be used everyday if u so desire.

Unless ur talking about the ACR Viper, the ZR1 trumps the SRT-10 easily. The ZR1. has 638hp, does 0-60 in 3.3 secs (.5 secs faster than this viper), 1/4 mile in 11.6, and handles much better and is more refined as well.
You could say that the ACR is faster, but its also a track only car that cannot be used everyday and it costs more than the ZR1 does.
So really, The Corvette ZR1 is the best American Muscle ever lol

What?! The ZR1 doesn't cost almost twice as much. More expensive, yes but not almost twice as much.
After Days of research... ive come to the exclusion that the Corvette ZR1 is not the competition for the Viper SRT10 ACR. it has no competition at the moment... The ZR1 being a high performance sports car and the ACR being a high performance Track/Sports car. The ZR1's competition is the standard Viper SRT10 not the ACR. with that said you cant compare them...

You really need to learn something. The viper does 0-60 in 3.4 seconds. The ACR costs less and I would be happy to drive an ACR everyday. And only one word to compare the Corvette and Viper: Nurburgring.

@legendsaleem well thats cool. I havent heard anything about this. why are they going with a v12? the viper is heavy enough. I rather see a supercharged srt10 than a v12. The thing is a tank. I still would take a zr1 anyday. even back in 92 when the rt 10 came out I would have a 92 zr1 cuz it handled soooooo much better

Really? Then why doesn't Chevy do it? The ACR that set the record is the street legal version that you can get at the dealership. The ZR1 is supercharged. Throw a supercharger on the Viper and it will be even more of a spanking. They are both great cars...but the Viper still comes out on top. Looks ALOT better too.

08 Vipers fastest ive seen is 16.4s to a 150 mph (faster than a zr1) and the 3rd generation hual to 150 in 19+s
