    I love how passionate you present this. I would not make some of your choices, but then again, everyone has a different taste and preference. So all is good. The main importance is how you share the process with us. As a DIY musician, I fully appreciate this sharing. Thanks so much

      “I love how passionate you present this. I would not make some of your choices, but then again, everyone has a different taste and preference.” Thank you and EXACTLY! For me mixing “success” is achieved when the artist feels extremely well represented and proud of the work we’ve done... while our UNIQUE and distinct voice as mixers clearly shines through. 😎 My hope is to raise awareness of specific applicable-to-all mixing CONCEPTS, while sharing my unique process as a creative mixer. Hopefully this will inspire you to explore how you would approach this in your own unique way. Thanks again and enjoy!

    Amazing, I need this video! I've been using the UNMASK module plugin by itself on the drums and bass to get the vocal to sit in the mix. Just sidechain to the vocal and adjust the bands and it carves out frequencies that are stepping on the vocal. Very subtle blend.. but you can actually turn down the vocals a little and they are still more forward in the mix than before.

    Interesting session, but I don't think I would have chosen those samples. The verse reminds me of modern pop, but not really Indie, which this song is to me. Querky: yes! But I would have toned it down (literally: much less highs in the drums). The new chorus samples don't sound like classic rock to me (I was young in the 70's) but more like 80's new wave. Sorry, I don't like it. Still a great tutorial! The fact I would have chosen differently is an option to think about because you are very clear in explaining your choices, and it helps me think of what I would have done.

    thanks for sharing and going through ur thought process!! its an interesting approach- i love the fullness it adds - i wonder it wouldn't be worth trying to actually mix the original drums sounds ur given to match some of these tones ur going for? like EQ VERB compression can get you to some of the sample sounds u brought in -- but i guess its faster (and seems fun) to just bring in samples to layer. LOVE the chorus tones

    51:57 odd choice for the snares. they don't sound quirky to me but artificial (tiny improvement over the original). personal taste probably. The new kick rocks though,

    I was hearing The Jam's Start, nod to the Beatles taxman but tighter on the drums. I would have gated or transient shaped the bass drum to take the tail off and added some SB using mbassador from melda with some saturation on it so it would not be lost on shitty speakers, 5 or 12 semitones down from the bd pitch. Then I would have gated the snare to make it pop that way. The gating would open the space for the toms, which I thought were very cool as is. To me the samples take any dynamics out and change the sound to the mix engineer's sound rather than the bands. I think this alternative would draw out what's there instead of superimposing over it. A tight slap back and/or a tiny bit of tight reverb and /or a little compression on the overall drum bus to glue it back together although the gated sound could work alone with none of that for a kind of jagged postmodern sound. I lost interest after the snare treatment but would have returned to the whole mix to work on the cymbals. IDK, maybe he did. I'd love to have the stems for this track to hear if my way would do what I hear in my head, but that would be my first approach to it.

  • @studiovinden
    @studiovinden Год назад

    Not to derail the very good ideas in this video but it seems like mono/stereo and mid/side are in some places used interchangeably (editing mistake, perhaps, I'm certain Mr Wyner knows the difference) and I think that should be clarified. Mono is summing L and R channels of the stereo channel together. Mid is only the information that is identical between L and R channels. Side is only the information that differs between L and R channels. Anyway, thanks for the great videos! ✌️

    Perfect video! I have on question, at 12:16 the original kick transient looks a little delayed compared to the samples, should i worry to quantize it to the grid just as the samples transients?

      I mean, phase flip is always the answer?

    • @sharchik916
      @sharchik916 Год назад +1

      @@locatellichristian The old adage is "if it sounds good it is good" right? With drum phase, aligning everything visually is a good starting point, but you can get there fast enough by flipping phase on one track most of the time and listening for improvement. From there you can use a time align plugin or move stuff manually to get even "better" stuff but sometimes the "exactly right" phase coherent thing might not sound as cool as two mics or samples just layered and phase flipped to be close enough. In the end its up to you I guess

    The artist clearly had a vision, and made a good track. The mix engineer decided arbitrarily, and unilaterally, to rob the drums of all personality by genericizing them.

    I would be very upset if my drums came back sounding like this after I sent it off to get mixed. Samples are cool, but not that cool, especially the ones used here. They should enhance the arrangement, not completely change it. This song sounds so goofy with the replacement drums.
