This mix tutorial is a game changer… it provides something the so few mix tutorials talk about: VISION and EMOTION!

Dude! I've been watching so many tutorials in these last couple years... You have not only a talent for doing your work, but a talent to share it and to invite people to get in your thought process this makes it so exciting to learn. THANK YOU!

Very “Beck”.. but thankfully different from the endless generic hip hop/pop “songs” that most tutorials feature..it grabs you right away..and you pushing the emotional instead of straight technical info..brilliant!

Thank you so much for this -- I have been binge watching yours and Jonathan's Are You Listening Series. As a composer, my mixing has always been weak. I truly understand what you are describing and feel like I may be able to understand how to make my mixes better.

I love the way you explain stuff. I have watched so many videos on how to mix. But this one shines brighter than the others. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It's very helpful to see someone go through the process of mixing a song. It makes so much more sense now. You're a great teacher. This gives me hope that I can learn how to mix songs. I would like to become a mixing engineer.

Thank you for this approach. Watching it in a working session is so helpful in the same way an intern/newbie learns. It is not just knobs, sliders, and ears. It is an emotional story which the music needs to reinforce. Kudos!

36:27 The widening of the vocals here goes counter the previous statement at 32:19 saying the verse should be narrow and widen up only in the pre-chorus. I liked it better when the verse was mono.

When you panned guitars did you delay one of them? If yes, how much?
Have you done any mix tutorials like this where all the stems are totally dry and you have to start from scratch?
Can you please do a start to finish mix of a hard rock or rap song where there is massive arena drums, bass, guitars, and orchestral sounds that have to work with the vocal and massive chorus vocal harmonies?

  • @JonAnderhub

This is interesting and it's a nice mix.
However, where do you draw the line between "mixing" and "producing"?
You are doing artistic, producing changes to the mix not just mixing.
Did the band agree to you producing their tracks and do you get producer credits?
What if the band doesn't like the artistic changes you have made or is planning on having another producer come in on the project?
I typically mix live material so artistic changes, except to enhance the live performance, are not part of the mix down.
Where do you draw that line?
