What great stuff! On the listen-level issue, I kept waiting for one of you to bring up the additional amplitude limiter in the room - your ears. An audiologist gave me clarity on this by explaining how the ear reacts to loud sounds by switching on a protective dampener (almost literally, but it's not physically in the ear, it's in the brain processing) that keeps us from continuing to listen at intense levels. It would be great if this was an instantaneous catch-and-release peak limiter, but it's definitely not. The "damper" triggers either instantly (think a bomb going off) or it "ramps up" as the ear hears what it (the autonomic brain) considers to be potentially damaging if left to continue too long. We are now listening fundamentally different than before. The next and bigger problem is: it may only take an instant or a few minutes to "dampen", but it takes a MUCH longer time to "un-dampen." LONG, like twenty to thirty minutes! I go get lunch after listening loud - before I try listening at lower levels again. Oh yeah, fun fact, alcohol triggers this effect as well - even without loud sounds. Dang!

I found for my particular genre (Hip-Hop/Trap) gain staging tracks correctly helped me achieve better mixing clarity as well as mixing predominantly in mono when creating a static mix.
I particularly enjoy using the inverse eq gulfloss as well as Ozone 9's eq match and setting it to the pink noise preset when mastering.
I master as I mix and aslo flip between earphones and moderate to low volumes.
One cool trick I learned when mixing vocals was to turn the volume as low as I could do that I could still make out the snare/clap as well as barely make out the vocals.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video you never fail to impress me with your attention to detail.
My engineering has improved drastically due to watching the Are you listening episodes religiously.
THANK YOU GUYS VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND EXPERTISE!!! 🎶🙏🤠🙌💯

@@P4TCH5S Also as another commenter already mentioned try get yourself a copy of Isotope's "Tonal Balance" plugin it has made a massive difference to my music as I can use any song as a reference in the mixing stage. I guarantee that with help you understand which particular frequencies are being overdone in your mixing.

I primarily prefer working in headphones when I'm mixing. I use Sonarworks Reference ID (for EQ correction) and Goodhertz CanOpener Studio (for crossfeed). CanOpener is the only crossfeed plugin that I've found that doesn't mess with the transients or color the sound of your headphones. Sometimes when I'm using my open back headphones, it doesn't feel like I'm wearing any headphones, it feels very natural like speakers.

Totally agree. I use the same plugins and I found them really helpful. I thought Jonathan and EGM dismissed them rather quickly.

Hi izotope , what happen if i use a hybrid solution... let me explain..
    Little desk
    Small/medium monitor correctly placed
So right now i need a good room al the calculation etc.etc.
But what happen if i made and put
Acoustic panels all around creating a litttle tiny room not aechonic but close.
There will be only me and speakers
Will i have a good compromise between headphones and a professional studio?
I tryed in the past and i think i had good result but i don't know if made something wrong beacouse i understand that is not usual.

Fantastic video as usual, I've watched them all and it's realyy informative to listen topeople who really know what they're doing just talking generally about what they do. It's not the big reveals, but the little assides, thing things that you guys take for granted that are the most illuminating, so thank you very much for putting the series together. I feel I should point out, however that the hand sign you used to indicate the number 'two' at the start (and on the thumb nail) is a rude gesture over here in Britain! Over here it's even worse than just using the single finger, Enrique's method is far better! apart from that, really looking forward to the rest of the series.

    • @FredMurray

What ? you mean the "peace sign" ? oh.... I just read it becomes rude if its... backward (palm facing from you).
