    I know the idea is that we buy Ozone, but this is so much better than certain other videos where you know all they want to do is trick you into buying something. This is really educational and enlightening. SO grateful to have watched this series!

    The Bass / Kick balance fix at the end of this video using a Low Pass Filter on the side chain is probably one of the golden-est nuggets in this whole series. This is a game changer.

    the true definition of '' less is more ''.. the cool thing about the mastering engineers is, when they adjust something or add something to the sound, we probably dont notice a thing at first glance, but there is definitely something gets changed.. Years of experience I guess. Golden ears indeed..💯👍

      @@sportsfreundberlin most people won't be able to tell individual changes plugins make, but the sum of little changes can be a huge lift

    Oh man. Generally, I feel very happy with my producing, engineering, mixing, and mastering skills, but this video clearly demonstrates that I do NOT have an ear for compression. I cannot hear the difference. This makes me sad.

      Same.. The only one I could hear a major difference in is the side chaining example and the glue compression example.

      Cannot hear the differences in most examples either, althouth the theory is well explained. Actually stwiched to my monitor headphone and still couldn't get a clear comparison.

      You cannot hear the compression as RUclips compresses the hell out of the audio

      I think mars is considered slightly too HOT 🥵 to inhabit !
      That track really is so annoying, ! I’d compress it to nr silence. Act just mute it. Delete, smash the computer. Go and live on MARS!!

    1:30 need to vary compressor moves by song section
    2:20 compressors better for smoothing dynamics than limiters
    3:10 compressors take away some early harmonics
    4:45 need to be light-handed with compressor for a clear sound
    9:30 longer release = smoothing
    10:20 using kick as side chain to duck the music
    10:45 compressor transparent smoother in mastering
    10:55 high-pass filter side chain to prevent pumping
    15:40 glue lose transient energy so hear sustain better
    17:35 hard knee = harder brighter sound
    18:10 soft knee, La-2a uses soft knee = smoother
    19:00 1176 hard knee
    19:15 hard knee for edginess in hard rock/edm
    20:25 RMS detector vocals sustained guitar
    23:45 kick bass relationship multiband low pass 150 Hz attack time

    I really can't understand why anyone would give Mr. Wyner thumbs down. SMH.... He's tutorials are very good, & on point when it comes to Mastering. Keep up the amazing work Mr. Wyner/iZotope

      I don't think people in my given the thumbs down just because they think he's a rubbish tutor I think it's because most people simply cannot hear any difference in any of the audible comparisons maybe they need monitors that cause minimum £10,000 up along with the added outdoor gear then connect the TV to RUclips then people say RUclips bitrate and compression is far too much that's why I think they are giving the Thumbs Down

    lots of densely packed yet valueable information here which is really helping me to get perspective. Of all the things in mixing/mastering, compression has been the hardest for me to understand how to practically apply it. I know what all the settings do, but actually knowing how and when to use them accordingly is really tough! This helped with that a bit. Great video!

    Thank you! You‘re one of the few who actually warns about misusing compression and what alterations may be made to the original input signal. I hear all these people just saying, „do it“ but fewer explaining any limitations involved with using compressors. A sign of true professionality!

    The RMS vs Peak was very useful. One of the only sections where I could actually hear a difference in the A/B.

    Very interesting and informative. I just finished Jason Allen's courses on Mixing and Mastering and re-watched Rick Beato's "How Pro's use Compression." Each has their own take on how compression is done and what compressors to use. No one right way, just taste and styles, but it does help to know the standards that have been used for years on popular songs.

      I didn't really hear them before either. Even with my newly acquired monitors, I really have to listen. Guess I have a long ways to go training my ear :)

      My ears are a bit shot but even with reference headphones on, I can barely hear the changes, when I say barely I really mean possibly can't. I don't know if this is actually youtube or trying to hear 1.2db changes is that difficult under my conditions and volumes . I think listening at 85db on monitors I might be able to pick it up easier and FEEL the bass.

    At this level, most of the compressive effects (especially in the first demo and about the frequency affects) are so subtle that I can't really hear them. Clearly, I do not have the trained ear of a mastering engineer. Multiband compression (as opposed to using a limiter) for mastering purposes is most definitely something I do not know how to do. So much good information in this video! Changes a number of aspects of how I think about compression even just from a mixing standpoint. (After all, if the mix is well done, the mastering engineer shouldn't have a great deal to do. There's nothing for him to fix!)
