People also forget that the SSD doesn't make noise and produces very little heat. Two things that help your overall gaming experience.
Also its safer and more durable and long lasting
@@Leon_hm ssds dies faster
@@Anti-Yeet no credible source says that
@@saxtoncan you can just google it,and there is alot of videos talking about the exact subject
@@Anti-Yeet I agree there are more read/write limits on ssd. It’s why most security systems use mechanical drives.
And ssd may run cooler but they get crippled in a hot environment over the mechanical variety.
Ssd is far superior in terms of technical features of course. But people clearly turn blind eyes to the issues.
Ssd really comes down to the bottle neck of the system itself.
Iv got 3 original Xbox’s with the original 8gb drives in them they are doing just fine.
I just wanted to increase the size of my storage while also eliminating sound and heat from the drive area. The fact that there is even any difference in performance makes it totally worth it to me.
This is so true the heat which is a huge issue on the fats is made a little bit better and now that SSDs are dirt cheap it is worth it for sure.
Samee
@@BouncingZeusused to heat my room in winter with a phat lol
SATA 1 won't matter that much because it only affects sequential speeds, while SSD's biggest advantage over HDD's are random speeds (measured in IOPS). In short, the time it takes to jump between each little file is instantaneous, while HDD's had to physically move their head (needle) across the disk. This is what greatly improves overall speed in many tasks, regardless of the maximum sequential speed, or whether you are using NVME or SATA.
I am sure ps3 games are optimized for streaming rather than access time.
@@stephenxs8354 PS3 is "agnostic" to its storage to a certain degree, but I'm happy to learn more if you ellaborate.
Its CPU asks for a certain asset (like a small texture, that is loaded into the RAM and later managed by the GPU). And it's the storage (HDD/SSD) that looks for that particular file before loading it. SSD does this almost instantaneously. I have seen this with my eyes in the original RAGE game for example. So I don't deny that PS3 has other bottlenecks where SSD's can't totally help, but I'm very sure of this behaviour in PS3, PC's and other consoles as well.
Does it decrease heat? That makes it worth it to me lol
The XMB menu is much more snappy when using a SSD. It's worth installing an SSD for that alone.
this is exactly why i was considering upgrading. i dont really care about game load times, its wierd he did not do some kind of xmb speed test. on mine it can get pretty sloggy when switching games or opening multiman etc. but thanks for the info, deff upgrading asap
That and SSDs are cheaper than ever. With the QLC stuff it's getting to the point where you can think about never using a spinning platter again
Games like fallout 3 it doesnt freeze anymore and framerates are more stable with ssd on ps3 very cool
@@at-cj2iy how about fallout new vegas?

@@blainelocklair I am late, but Rage is not using Unreal, it is an Id tech engine.

Fancy seeing you here MrMario! Huge fan of your modding videos!!
However , In news of Sony shutting down PS3 Store in July2021, you should make a video about how to best prepare for this, as a legit ps3 games PSN owner , I'm very concerned about all the games i bought off PSN and the longevity of my HDD in regards to those games and updates in the near future.

My super slim with PS3hen was always scanning for corrupted data, and that in particular is so much faster with an SSD that it was worth it for that alone.
The super slim will benefit from a ssd because of it's sata 2.
Ssd stops texture pop in, and improves FPS and stability. system response is greatly improved, ssd literally makes the PS3 like a PS3 pro.
@ViciousDave4Life
All of that is true except for the part about having higher frame-rates. An SSD has nothing to do with the frame-rate and is strictly tied to the CPU/GPU of the console. But yes, an SSD in a PS3 is well worth it considering how cheap they are now. Most games are run off the disc anyway so an SSD is excellent to speed up the XMB, reduce texture pop-in and generally reduce power and heat consumption.
sir.i want ask change stock hdd PS3 or PS4 to new HDD/SSD and instal System PS3 and if something happen unexpected in new HDD/SSD when want change to old HDD PS3 i need do something? plug and play? no need reinstal system in old HDD?
yes it should be plug and play with no issues🙏 so if your ssd dies by some form of bad luck, you can go back to your old hard drive right away.

I though HDD are supposed to last longer than SSD
@@TmpVideoNo. An SSD will always last longer then an HDD. Anyone who works on servers or IT will tell you that. A benefit of HDD is technically it is easier to fix an HDD then an SSD if it fails
Thanks for this video. I recently modified 2 PS3 Slim consoles using your video, so much easier than the first PS3 mod using another person's video. Well, this here helped tremendously. I was contemplating if I should go SSD or HDD, but your video helped me decide. Going to stick to getting HDD 1 TB....less expensive and it performs just about the same... Thanks Mr. Blaine!!!!
I have an SSD in my CECHA01 (fully backwards compatible) mainly because it doesn’t produce as much heat but compared to my 2501b with its stock HDD, there really isn’t much of a difference, but it does seem a smidge bit smoother overall.

Ok, Checking out the upgrade video. I want an SSD in mine. ;) Great vid!
the only reason it's not loading as fast as expected is because there are certain animations in between each load time, it first has to finish each animation before actually loading, and not only that but there is alot more that an SSD does to a PS3 than just load times stand alone
Thanks man, this was useful, I just so happen to have a spare ssd with larger size capacity, I'm gonna do it 🤘🏼
I thought about doing this, but I think that I want to just go the flash drive route and store/play the files directly from USB instead. 1tb flash drives are dropping in price these days and you can get as many as you need to create a massive collection library. I'm also not too worried about the xmb loading a second faster.
Playing directly from flash drives also won't last very long at all, so I read
It would be nice if you tested loading times using OFW with DVD and using CFW when whole DVD is placed as ISO on the ssd drive. This would be meaningful comparison, please :)
This really is the best video on comparison speeds.
Well I was planning to buy a SH PS3 to my brother and I was thinking of upgrading it with an SSD considering that it will be a moded PS3.The video was really useful .Gj !!
My guess is upgrading to a faster hdd might be better considering the limitations of the SATA bis in the ps 3. I'm curious if things like the store load faster, if loading or saving a game is faster, etc.
Thank you for this worckbench
I'm tempted to do this since I have an extra SSD lying around completely unused rn

Hello mr blaine, what about the heat on the system?? Is it stable?
Great video
games that have a lot of little files in the folder structure benefit greatly and online games load faster because its able to load online data that gets cached on the hdd/ssd and when u mount an iso on your ps3 it splits the job of the hdd because it loading from the iso and hdd/ssd when playing games that require hdd seek and Blu-ray access like gta v on ssd with mod menus is very solid

Is the PS3 SS compatible with an SSD?i need more storage and want to mod it
I saw a video of another youtuber that made the same experiment with a complete SSD installation of GTA V - from press start to the actual gameplay: SSD= 22 seconds HD= 1min 44sec...
what about multiman on ssd? I hear it have problems with detect disk is true?
Could you please make a video on how to download games on PS3 slim after jailbreak?
I personally did a 1TB Samsung SSD today for some downloaded games from the PlayStation network. Mortal Kombat 2 plays great! the PS1 games load pretty much as normal. Games like Silent Hill, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and Dino Crisis having different resolutions in menus, load, and play as normal. If you have the discs it'll play as emulation.
the store loads fast which was a surprise. It's also quieter I'm guessing due to the HDD being one of the culprits.
If you have a spare drive go for it. 500GB is plenty for games if you want a fresh drive.
What about console load time?

After i format my ps4 harddrive now the harddrive not conecting to my ps3 any solution ?
with the looming shutdown of the PS3 playstation store, I am scouring the net for information on how to upgrade my ps3 hard drive.
what I want to know is will the SSD upgrade work with a PS3 that is not modded. I read somewhere that that PS3 (with official firmware) can only read a max of 1TB hard drive and does not recognize USB 3.0 connection, but most of these articles or information I read are over 8 years old. there has been no update recent test with regards to the most recent firmware update from Sony.
maybe you can enlighten me on this subject before I start buying HDD or SSD that i might potentially regret LOL i'm not really interested in modding my ps3 slim anytime soon, I just want to back up all the games I bought on PS3 Playstation Store as well the as the numerous updates to all the PS3 Games in my collection.
Sorry for the long comment LOL
thanks in advance and more power to your Channel
Do you happen to know what brand is ideal for reliability and quality of HDD for a PS3 Slim CECH-2101A with official firmware? I still play most of my games on disc and some digital; I find that I’m comfortable sticking with the HDD than SSD since performance is not an issue but storage. My PS3 still has the 120GB hard drive from the factory it’s 11 years old and still works with no issues for past 3 months since cleaning.
wd black.
interesting findings. I wonder if it would be any faster transferring files from PC to PS3 over FTP via ethernet with an SSD over a HDD.
Can I do this with a backwards compatible ps3? I just bought it the other day and it was already sealed with a 1tb hdd but my games seem to run very slow even in game, hope it's not the disk reader going out but it's not severely dusty or anything like that
Can you just plug n play the ssd or it need some kind of software something like that
I installed a ssd yesterday my personal experience my ps3 is very quiet 🤫 even restoring the data for 6 hours I never knew what it looked like to play a ps3 that didn't sound like a F-22 raptor off a runway I recommend it simply because it runs games smoother faster boot times honestly the hdd has a lot of issues with lag just pressing folders runs more seamless
I'm guessing this will benefit me with a soft modded system loading PS1 and PS2 ROMs of the main system drive?

Hello! Great video, I've been looking for a guide for a SSD in a PS3!
Can the PS3 accept larger drives? Like 2tb?
Theoretically, yes
But only 1TB is accessible
1.5t usable if you use a 2tb drive.
was your test using a 5400 rpm hdd or a 7200 rpm hdd?
There is something you didn't test is the gameplay smoothness when going from one area to another. Sad that Sony and AMD stuck with SATA I, but must have been about cutting costs. It seems the benefits of a SSD upgrade is rather negligible.
Mine has much quicker load screens on skyrim since the upgrade. But it still freezes sometimes with multiman. No more Skyrim freezes YET. But I lost my save data due to a POS backup/restore feature on the PS3. Pretty sure the capacitors are going to need replaced as well.
Thinking about going with an SSD with my, new to me, PS3 since it only has a 120GB HDD plus I'm planning of using it for CFW.
I bought an SSD fof my PS3 just for Demon Souls. Its night and day the difference in load times. I learned about it from speedrunner and yeah its amazing. Other games loading quicker and quieter was a bonus.
What's going on buddy:) great info
How did you make this video and not test level load times of digital downloads? That's where the vast majority of the benefit could potentially be had. How did you not think to download inFAMOUS (which everyone got for free when PSN got taken offline) and test load times between the two drives?
Ok, I am watching all your ps2, ps3 and ps4 videos
Hi, thanks for the video. I upgraded to a SSD (Western Digital 1tb) and everything works great, but I can't play any more PS2 Games. When I try to launch them my PS3 turns off and the red power light starts flashing. Aparently it means there's an overheating problem. But how can this be an issue with this new SSD, and not with the old HDD?
I'd appreciate any help you can give.
hold up so it doesn't work anymore, did you end up fixing it?
Loved Tron Evolution.
Hi is what should i get 500gb or 1tb storage?
I know these are made and sold in the tens of millions, so every bit of cost cutting makes a difference, but the PS3 having SATA 1 and the PS4 having SATA 2 is bizarre to me..
If PS3 could read data from the hard drive @ 150 MB/s then it would fill the RAM in 3 seconds.... the reality is it reads at about 30 MB/s max. SSD can give better performance in some games like Gran Turismo 6 because it handles small files better (and GT6 has 50 000 small files, LOL)
Hi I just purchased a Samsung 870 evo 2tb I put the psp file in the usb drive but it says unsupported hdd? Any help or videos
2 tb 💀tf u wanted install whole ps3 library or what? and 2 tb aren’t supported
How much more snappy is the OS experience though? That’s what I’d like to see, the PS3 struggles sometimes because the OS got more bloated over the last 10 years than what the PS3 was perhaps intended to handle.
It will be faster, I dont knw why these tests gloss over boot up times or switching from game to game. They never show how slow the ps3 is when booting up. The OS is on the drive, so when its on an SSD it does everything faster. Even if people say theres minimal difference, when in reality it depends on what their doing. I like how the tests in this video didn't include a large game like GT5 or GT6. Those games the SSD benefits from as well.
Blaine please make vids about Update ps3 version 4.87
The assassins creed games benefit from an ssd quite a lot those loading scenes where you run about in a void load atleast 2x faster with an ssd i was very impressed when i switched over to one

After checking and seeing that 2.5 drives are actually more expensive then their SSD counterpart in my country it's a no brainer, less heat too
Any one knnnnow the actual storage limit of the PS3 internal drive? I have looked and answers range from 500gb witch I know is WRONG since I have installed a 750 gb on a friends and the machine recognizeed it as such. All the way up to 2TB for answers. Since a 2tb ssd can be found for well under $100 right now It is a no brainer for me IF the machine will recognize the full capacity. Minus formatting and os space of course.
Now test with fast 2.5" mechanical hdd. 5400 and 7200rpm.
Why wouldn’t you see how long it takes to load into the game?
there is not only speed who is important but the latency of ssd help a lot even at 150 mb it's still faster for the game with many small file on ps3
Upgrading to a seagate barracuda 500gb or 1tb should me fine
It's worth it just for less heat and less noise. But downloaded games do load faster. About 10-20% for me. An SSD will max out your performance.
I have a PS3 and was thinking of upgrading the hard drive.
I was wondering what is the largest hard drive I can use.
I've read that you can only go up to 1TB for the internal drive. I have also read that you can use 1.5TB.
Do you know the real answer?
This made me feel really glad I bought a 1tb HDD instead of a 1tb SSD
Is there a max hdd size that the ps3 can handle? 2Tb, 3Tb etc
@@blainelocklair hard cap limit depends of the file system used, common break point is 2GB so if 1.5 TB works -my friend has one in 2TB shouldn't be the problem. However they were not common goods back when PS3 was made so it really only way to know is to try , some people reported problems with large capacity drives - but no one confirmed their drive was 100% was ok , meaning most of them were used/reclaimed form notebooks and they might developed bad sectors or had other issues. At this moment i don't have any of the drives above 1TB to test , so I may get back to You with that info.
An unorthadox idea but one to consider.
When dumping PS2 and PS3 and if you dont have a Blu-Ray drive lying around, you can dump to a SSD while you do all that, then pull it out to back it up to the PC with the SATA 3 speeds, rather than the SATA 1 speeds of the HDD, even through FTP.
I didn’t ever think of getting a SSD but I did get this for £30
Toshiba MQ01ABD100 1TB SATA 3GB/s 5400RPM 2.5 Inch 9.5mm Internal Hard Drive
Seems to work well and games copied from USB take around 8 to 12 minutes but games like resistance were a lot more being that is 17GB
Those have high failure rates though.
Just for the sake of posterity- I only just finally caved & put a new hard drive in my PS3 (not SSD, though). It's the third PS3 I ever owned, a slim model, &, for whatever reason, I always had trouble with it deciding to acknowledge the existence of Bluray disks & sometimes it had trouble even pulling a disc inside the tray. I thought I was going to have to install a new bluray drive, too, but, for whatever reason, simply replacing the hard drive completely fixed the other issue, as well. Not 100% sure what was wrong before, but I guess the original hard drive was only barely compatible with the PS3 & sapped energy from other components of the playstation, so parts like the disc tray were barely functioning? I dunno, but it fixed it, so I am happy I don't have to shell out another $50-60 for that.
I think a better test would be to use a known heavy load, too. Say, entering a stage.
For an old hardware like the ps3, it's worth to use an hybrid hdd instead of an proper ssd?.
Videogames are packs of hundreds/thousands of files, with that said hybrid drives or SSHD'S only copy to the SSD section the most used files (in the case of a PC that would be for example the OS and common used programs like google chrome), a console is made to play games, what you want if you wanna improve load times, reduce pop in etc is random write/read, thats where SSD'S shine, as they can access any file instantly where an HDD has to wait for the platters and the header to align the concrete sector, read/write in multiple passes etc, basically is really slow, even for the less common 10,000 rpm HDD's get nuked in performance by the cheapest SSD, even modern wifi is faster than that, not only that, but HDD's are mechanical, they WILL fail, due to wear and tear.
