In the comics, Moon Knight’s real name was Marc Specter, and he was the son of a rabbi who fled from the Holocaust. When he became an adult, he dedicated himself to being a man skilled in all means of contending-a championship boxer, Marone, CIA operative, and finally a mercenary.
He took a job working for a guy named Raul Bushman, a fella so extreme he had his entire face tattooed to look like a death’s head mask. Long story short, Bushman’s evil, his forces turned on Marc, and left him for dead in the Egyptian desert. Then Marc found the temple of the moon god Konoshu, and the god brought him back to life.
On the condition that Marc would be his agent on earth. Marc then dedicates his life to fighting crime and serving the moon good who lives in his head. Apart from the vigilante moon knight, created different secret identities for himself. A cab driver named Jake Lockley, who gathers info from the street. And a billionaire playboy named Steven Grant, who became rich from investing all of Marc’s mercenary fees. This is also the identity he uses for most of this trailer. The different identities are symbolic of the different phases of the moon, which looks a little different every time we see it.
Switching back and forth between so many different identities eventually gave him Dissociative identity disorder, or DID. But later comics revealed that he did not have DID, it was just the god Kooshu living inside his head, and his mind splintered as a coping mechanism.
In the comics he has no powers, except his natural fighting ability and he’s rich.. But he does have an array of gadgets and a plane that looks like a crescent moon.
So let’s talk about these easter eggs! The trailer dropped on the first full moon of the year, which might have just been lucky timing. We begin on Oscar Isaac, seen here as one of Moon Knight's other identities, Stephen Grant. Except here he’s not a billionaire, just a museum gift shop worker with no friends.
If you notice, he is wearing a white shirt, and later on he wears a white hoodie under his jacket. These are both hints of the moon knight persona, itching away at his subconscious, as he naturally shoes to wear white.
And he’s playing with a rubik’s cube, which my wife pointed out has many faces, just like moon knight. Each color of the cube is intermeshed and overlapping with the other, just like his IDENTITITES are becoming intertwined. Throughout the series he’ll have to solve the mystery of his identity, just like a rubik’s cube.

It’s that was werewolf by night being punch by moon knight
khonshu is 2 syllables bro, thumbs up tho
Is Khonsu like an actual god? Or is he like Thor, just a strong alien?
No
City of angels is definitely the worst ending of any movie I've ever seen in my entire life and I still get mad to this day that I've sat through that movie. Especially because I was digging the movie until the end
Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight, Mahershala Ali’s Blade, Gael García Bernal’s Werewolf by Night, and Kit Harington’s Black Knight forming The Midnight Sons would be so cool!!!
I do believe that’s the plan. The Midnight Sons with that specific cast is going to be awesome!
Throw in the highly rumoured Ghost Rider D+ series and we’ve got them all!
and maybe punisher (jon bernthal) if they put him in the midnight sons
@@theflamingcookie6480 oh, yes please!
ghost rider is a must
Pretty significant correction: According to the most recent continuity Mark always had DID, in fact that's why Khonshu picked him, he needed someone with a weak mind he could dominate.
It's a tricky canon to track. Good point.
Bully Khonshu.
Was going to point this out too, recent retcons show him struggling with it as a child, and Khonshu identified him early.
I would let Khonshu dominate me...
Is it though? The MCU is unlikely to stick to the comics in deep detail regardless.
Actually Moon Knight has exhibited quite a few superhuman abilities over the years. He’s had enhanced strength, speed, agility and durability based on the moon phase, with full moon being his strongest and new moon his weakest(not to mention the rare super moon). He’s been shown to be able to absorb the powers of the ancient avengers and store them in ankh relics, he’s also able to harness and manipulate those powers at will(iron fist/shao-lao’s chi, agamottos magic, spirit of vengeance/hellfire). He is also able to wield Mjolnir with more control and skill than Thor, he can wield it in a telekinetic manner because uru is ancient moon ore. He’s also exhibited some startling mental abilities lately, as well as the ability to phase through objects.
I was considering this too. The character is interesting in that different writers seem to lean toward or away from him having overt powers. Is Khonshu still locked up these days? I haven't followed in a while.
I also wanted to mention that the show does seem to be leaning into the mystical powers angle - unless those glowing eyes and self-donning suit end up being in his head.
@@dfailsthemost That would definitely suck if that is the case.
In that same comic of Moon Knight being stupidly OP 😴 doesn’t it hint to Khonshu being completely in his head ? Which I love and also don’t believe
damn
wasn't uru from a neutron star?
I like how different this show looks compared to the other Disney+ shows, it looks like it has its own style and is doing things a bit differently, them talking about mental health will be neat if done right and I like his mummy looking costume a lot
They all have their own styles. All of them.
While I agree; I really hope this show hired a mental health professional on staff. Most shows and movies that have portrayed health issues have met with harsh backlash from many professionals as well as those dealing with the medical problems portrayed. Should be a great series.
@@yoda908 Yeah let’s hope they do and they treat the subject with the respect it deserves
@@IcyDiamondstill looks like a great version
@@yoda908 Yeah agreed
Can't wait for the Midnight Sons team up. Marvel horror is going to be great
morbius
I'm so happy they're giving Moon Knight the mature theme he deserves plus I'm happy to see a new main character be introduced through a TV show, which I don't believe we've seen before.
Well tey did Kate Bishop
I love the fact we're getting another Pantheon of gods in the MCU. It makes me wonder how they'll explain the origins of the Egyptian gods given that they made the Norse gods aliens.
The Greek Pantheon are confirmed for Thor 4. My guess is to be butchered by Gorr. Ares was teased in Ragnarok.
Don't forget that they showed Kang in loki whose past is linked to Egypt
Zeus is gonna be in thor 4
Played by russel crow
@@djtheinfinitegamer7903 yes I was gonna say I hope we see the Greek/Roman Gods since they exist in Marvel
Moon Knight did have superpowers for a considerable time in the comics. He had Increased strength, speed, and endurance depending on the lunar cycle.
I came here to say the same thing. They came back for awhile as well. He was supercharged in West Coast Avengers when they were in space due to multiple moons.
I don't understand why everyone is saying he don't have powers. He's shown to have many different kinds of superpowers in the comics over the years, they've just been very ambiguous and inconsistent about it.
@@mortagon1451 I haven't fully researched it but I think he has lost his powers in more recent comics.
@@Ali-bu6lo They don't really address it that much, but I think it's implied that he still has some level of super strength and maybe immortality. I think they will go for classic Moon Knight in the MCU though since that's his most iconic portrayal.
The Kid Cudi song is also on an album called The Man On The Moon…
This a good one
I just wanted to add a little thing at 9:31 you listed Ra, Osiris, and Anubis, but those figures are actually Horus on the left, a pharaoh in the middle, and Set on the right. Horus is the hero (the goodness in you) Set is the evil/mischievous one (the bad side of you) but both of them come together to bless and be used as a Whole by the Pharaoh
Moon Knight absolutely has powers in the comics. In fact he gets different power sets over the years. His standard is his physical capabilities wax and wane with the moon itself. At his strongest he can lift around 2 tons. He is also technically immortal, as he's been killed 3 times and Kohnshu has brought him back to life. And at one point when he absorbed a sliver of Khonshu's powers, he got straight up moon powers. And because Khonshu brought him back, he is basically immune to telepathy and can freely manipulate his own mindscape. So yeah, he's got powers alright.
In the museum gift shop scene, there's a huge statue of the Egyptian cat deity Bast (better known as Wakanda's Panther God) behind the woman.
Also, the crocodile imagery probably refers to Sobek, Marvel's version of the Egyptian crocodile god. Arthur Harrow's cane also appears to have a silver crocodile head on the end.
I mean Sobek is also the original Egyptian crocodile god as well...
I mean, no one said he wasn't . . .
Sobek isn’t Marvel’s version, he is the original crocodile god, as well as Egypt’s god of war, the Nile, and I believe harvests.
@@randallman491 Yes, most people with a passing knowledge of Egyptian mythology know that Sobek was a local fertility god who gained prominence as a major god under Amenemhat III.
The Sobek referenced in the above video *is* Marvel's version, as he is based on but different from the crocodile god worshipped in ancient Egypt.
Just a stab in the dark but I recall a scene in the Winter Solider move about a n agent lost in Cairo.. I always wondered if that was a nod to Spector.. great video and channel! Also, I'd buy that cover album too 😄😄
They actually said a news anchor in Cairo, so I would guess it’s not him
@@projectjaguar5638 gotcha... yeah, it's been a minute since I watched WS but that Cairo mention always made me think of that Spector angle. Thanks for clarifying. 🤙🏻
@@KBJoetographs I mean it could still be remember that marc spctor worked as a tv producer later in the comics so I dont see this beig there just to throw some people off at the time
A do love the interconnectedness of the MCU but I loved that this trailer is just so separate from it all. No name drops, no established characters, no cameos, no plot interference. Just a straight up marvel original. I'm sure he will be part of the bigger picture in the future, but it's nice to see something totally fresh this time around
Yay was waiting yesterday night for a vid. Love them. Keep up the hard work especially dealing with Doug
Of the retcons, I prefer the most recent origin, where his “uncle” traumatized him into the DID diagnosis. It just adds that small bit that makes a huge difference in his mythos
3:00 love Doug's enthusiasm there!
Seems like we’re gonna focus on Steven Grant for the first few episodes then shift to Moon Knight and maybe his other personalities like Marc Spector,Mr Knight and Jake Lockley,They made Steven middle class too,and British so I assume when he finds out who Marc Spector is he also finds the wealth he gained as a mercenary🌙
I definitely think you’re right. I also heard that his other costume persona Mr Knight will in fact be one of his multiple personalities. I always liked his Moon Knight persona better but showing Mr Knight would definitely be super cool. This show looks like it’s going to be awesome! I can’t wait until it drops!
Sorry I mispronounced Konshu all the way through the video. I am sleepy.
U have to pronounce it 100 Times properly
apologize to Konshu!
This could be a long shot, but the rubik's cube might not just be symbolism for DID. He might be solving the rubik's cube as one of his alter egos, and might be how he discovered them in the first place. So he sleeps with the cube solved (or unsolved) and if he wakes up and it's unsolved (or solved), then he knows he was active in his sleep. With the theme of chaos, I assume he solves the cube before bed, then it becomes unsolved in the morning.
Edit: found a typo
Smart analogy!
He also tie his leg to the bed
That’s an excellent theory. I hope you’re right.
or maybe he just likes solving the cube 😂 I mean not every detail has a theory or explanation behind, anyway everyone will forget the theories once the show is out, it happens on every trailer
I loved the use of the song Day n Nite. I got chills when I first heard it upon opening and I think it was used really well throughout the trailer. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us
Calling it now: they use Konshu’s power over the moon to help “hold back the tide” against Namor’s forces in Wakanda Forever.
no one will read this after a month
That would be perfect for connecting all the films but we don’t have any confirmation that Nemor is actually gonna appear in Black Panther Wakanda Forever
I didn't know I needed to see a dog sing the Goo Goo Dolls, but I did. I really did!! :D
That Mr Mustard, Polythene Pam, Sun King joke made my day, I wonder how many people will get that? love you Ryan!
They way Ryan said "what" "what" had me dying 🤣🤣🤣
Your channel goes so much more in depth. Glad I found your channel years ago and you guys keep getting better.
Very insightful as usual. Thanks Ryan!!!
Yo just discovered you and been binging everything! You’re breakdowns are amazing! Thank you!
Man you help alot thank you for all this info
Man, The fact that you pulled all of that from the trailer is amazing. Now Im excited for the show since I kinda got some background on MK
I was waiting for you breakdown, looking forward to the release because looks amazing
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox story is very underrated.
It's on par with Step Brothers to me.
Looked forward to your video comin out ryan!
Doug’s little cover of “Iris” was adorable 🤣
I have a feeling that this show is going to be great.
I thought it was a movie?
Doug really is a brilliant trailer analyst.
Tha way u were readin those lyrics..."whatt, whatt" 😆. Great breakdown
The fact Ryan says (What what) and then again a second time had me absolutely rolling 🤣🤣
A great breakdown as always! I can't help but boggle that this is actually happening. Moon Knight was one of those characters I enjoyed as a child 30+ years ago now and to see him finally getting a tv series is amazing.
Day 'n' Nite was also a breakout single on Kid Cudi's debut studio album "Man on the Moon: The End of Day"
Wow gr8 breakdown.. I would never have come up with something like this.. after watching that small piece of trailer. Congratz man, and thank you.
Another MCU series that im really hyped to watch. None of their Disney Plus shows have disappointed me so far.
Yess Waited all day for this video!😁
I’m sure your side-kick gets a lot of attention, and that’s cool, but what I really dig is the whole video store setting. It really works. Nice job
Terrific episode 👏👏👏
Thanks Ryan!
This is quality RUclips. It’s impressive how fast you are able to find Easter eggs, film, and edit
Nice break down - thank you.
It should also be noted that Kid Cudi is often referred to as the 'Man on The Moon' (even has a rap album trilogy called that) and has a built his rap career around being the 'Moon man' it's no coincidence that they picked him for the soundtrack
It’s interesting that Bill Sienkiewicz, the most iconic Moon Knight artist, did the cover art for Man on The Moon.
@@bryanbassett9593 oh my god, wtf that’s incredible
Show always makes me laugh and the content rocks!!!
Dougs response to the commercial is priceless
Rubik cube has 6 sides and 6 colors. "What?", "Not the beeeesssssss."
HUGE detail that was missed: in the German ice cream truck there’s a box behind mark labeled “ Von D-“. It gets cut of by his chair, but imma call it now and say with the fantastic four coming out this is a direct nod to Victor Von Doom, aka DOCTER DOOM
Could also to be a nod that one of the show's writers, Jeremy Slater, wrote the 2015 F4 movie
@@WilliamWelsh true, but it feels to coincidental for me that marvel also making a f4 movie and there’s all those new rumors about John Krazinski being Reed Richards in Dr Strange MOM. I definitely see your point tho.
@@da3funnyguys396 or both 😱
i love your brakedown videos and im always excited when I see a new one :)
Can't wait for this!!!
It looks amazing!
Great breakdown of the trailer! Esp liked Fight Club similarities...and City of Angels IS an amazing soundtrack 😉
I love how you read the lyrics to the trailer song
I watched Paul’s breakdown and Erik’s reaction videos and neither mentioned Fight Club.
It was my first thought upon watching the trailer.
Great breakdown.
great stuff as usual but oh my those in-video ads lol. they are def something!
London’s British museum has not the biggest ancient egypt collection outside Egypt, Turin’s Egyptian museum in Italy has.
That “what what” had me joking on my dinner 😂😂
Ryanery, nobody does a breakdown like you. You're an excellent detective, thorough and inquisitive.
I have got to see MOON KNIGHT now! This video had me sold.
Best trailer in years! I missed so much because I was so drawn into the tone. Can't wait.
Doug is here for the burn!
Little Doug gets savage with the "your mom"!
I like that right after Doug asks about new year resolutions he hardly pays any attention when Ryan starts showing his sponsor of the vid lol I love Doug😂
Haha the reading of the Cudi lyrics cracked me up *what what
3:00
Ryan: ".. a dietary supplement called AG1..!"
Dog: *yawns unimpressed*
:P
I love that you included the "what what" when you read the Kid Cudi lyrics
LOVE THE DOGGY! great channel.
Another potential Easter egg with the rubiks cube is the white side is the top of the cube. And when learning how to solve it, that's the layer you learn how to solve first (it doesn't matter what side you start with, but for consistency most teaching material starts with the white side).
Glad your channel is still up enjoy your break down G.U.P ..
Here's a theory. Moon Knight will shout, "Random bullshit, GO!"
Ten points for you if you got that reference.
"Why do I hear eminem?"
I love Doug and the Mom jokes !!! Looking forward for the BOBF E4 review !! 😆
Subtle "mama jokes" is a great progression and a breath of fresh air in my ABSOLUTE favourite part of the videos.
Great job Ryan, keep up the good work!
4:08 please tell me you skipped this part or ended the video I'd you haven't seen this masterpiece
You are good my man.
Damn I think you’ve cracked the case ole chap!
Super Mega Excited for this show...
I don't know who writes your entire series but kudos to them. If it's you, then kudos to you. You just flow very good on all of your videos. Even subtly throwing in the mom jokes is great
Doug's Singing voice is so cute!!!!
More excited for this than any other Disney+ Marvel show yet!
Stellar breakdown team!
Beats the heck out of that Geordie muppet…
When Doug said “So’s your mom”, I lost it. I had to pause the video because I was laughing until I cried.
Nice Abbey Road medley reference 11:18
New word I never heard of, that I just learned of. Cacophony 🧐 thanks Ryan
Best breakdown creator ever
I was thinking whilst seeing Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch and Alfred Molina together in No Way Home that there are a lot of British actors playing Americans in the MCU - now there's an American playing a Brit!
The fact you referenced day n night by kid was 🔥
So happy to see Doug finding his voice
The “ what what” made me spit out my drink
Literally had zero knowledge of this character but this breakdown got me so amped
Moonight is a show? OOMG I only learned about it now! More action! yay
Big bonus points for the walk hard reference
4:31 Bananas that y’all got this out already
hey cool, I worked on one issue of Midnight Sons!
I just watched the “Doctor Strange is a masterpiece” one so I was thinking you’d mention the trucking of the clock link between the trailer and that movie. Between That and how Doctor Strange was in a movie with Matt Murdock who has Daredevil powers and that same Daredevil was in the Defenders with The Iron Fist could possibly be the rounding out of the mysticism force for the MCU. Moon Knight, Blade, Black Knight, Doctor Strange, Shang Chi, Iron FIst, and (maybe) the Eternals. Also the Von Doom box in the Ice Cream truck. Could mean that team would face him in side epic of the mysticism squad
Great call out on D.I.D. and its former name. As a psych student I appreciate the facts getting spread. I wonder how long until pop culture can stop correcting multiple personality to the new Dissociative Identity Disorder and people will be as aware of D.I.D. as people are/used to be with the old M.P.D.
I'm sure it's going to take a while, I mean how long was it before they stopped giving people "curable amnesia" with a conk on the head. A lot of people still think MPD and Schizophrenia are interchangeable terms.
@@TheRealAlpha2 very true. Psychology facts aren't as easy or captivating for story telling unfortunately. Makes it all the more worthy to celebrate when they do come up and hope for a trend to rise.
I was hoping some Hungarian readers may point out, actually the square scene shooted at the main street of Szentendre. Many scenes shooted at Budapest as well. But the signs indeed may point towards Germany or Austria, specially if they left the comic book background of Ethan Hawke's character.
